Stingers
buzz back from behind to snuff out the
Lamp Lighters in OT, 7-6
By Neil

      Deke
Sherwood has been proven wrong (again)!
      Sherwood
previously questioned team parity in the
B division ("Spring has Sprung"
news article from March 21). Perhaps to
answer that charge, Wednesday's 8 pm
contest saw a come from behind shocker
with the Stingers overcoming 4-0, 5-1 and
6-2 deficits by scoring 4 unanswered
goals in the last 10 minutes of the 3rd
period, and the winner 3 minutes into OT.
      The
Lighters eponymously notched 4 goals in
the first period. Daniel Hasselson"-of-a-gun"
scored his 4th and 5th of the season to
open things up, followed by Paul "are
you really French" Cousineau and
Captain Joe "is it Banal or"
Balan, both on the power play. Although
the Stingers had their chances, goalie
Eric "invisible ink" Penzel (filling
in for the missing Craig "beautiful
mind" Nash) repeatedly turned them
away. It seemed like the rout was on, and
that Sherwood's assessment would be
vindicated. During the 1st intermission,
the Stingers kept their spirits high by
quipping "hey, we've got 'em right
where we want 'em" and "the 4
goal lead is the worst in hockey" -
prophetic words indeed. With Hasselson in
the sin bin for high sticking, the
Stingers got on the board on a power play
of their own halfway through the second
period, with sub Tom "I only had 3
beers so I'm not really" Wisted
notching his first of 3 to come this
night. But rookie (he paid me to write
that) Bob Spiro restored the 4 goal lead
two and a half minutes later, making it 5-1
at the end of the second.
      After
the teams exchanged goals again early in
the 3rd (Keith "nice suit"
Taylor, ASSISTED BY FRANCIS "PRINCE"
ALBERT, for the Stingers and Andy "the
beard" Harris for the Lighters), the
Stingers seemed to bring their game to a
higher level, with strong efforts from
defensemen Wisted, Mark "it's a name
not a key" Allen, James "I can't
think of anything funny to put here"
Soutter and forward James "you gotta
have" Marihart. Two quick goals, by
Wisted and Soutter, made it 6-4, then
Wisted found the back of the net again
with 4:32 remaining, really getting the
fans excited. Showing some of his flair
from their championship game last season,
veteran (he paid me to write that) Allen
tied the game at 6 with only 2 minutes
left. Goalie Mark "see the other"
Fassett turned aside several quality
chances to keep it tied and force
overtime. On a wicked shot from the blue
line from Wisted, Albert deflected the
puck into the top corner to cap off one
of the most thrilling comeback victories
in the Belmont league's young life.
Sherwood could not be reached for comment.
      After
the game, the Lamp Lighters established
an early 7-2 lead in bar attendance, and
though the Stingers made it close (7-4)
they could not repeat their amazing
comeback in that department.
      PS:
Rumor has it that the Stingers are
actively recruiting Wisted to join their
team permanently. As an early participant
in the Belmont 4-on-4 league, back when
there were only four teams of 5 or 6
players each, Tom is certainly well known
to everyone. Wisted was quoted as saying:
"Did they learn to drive the Zamboni
yet?", when asked about his plans to
re-join the league. If last night's ice
quality was any indication, chances are
we will be seeing more of him in the
future.
