Cavemen
Neutralize the Sting
By
Helmethead Johnson
      In
a very tough contest that really was much
closer fought than the final score would
indicate, the Cavemen prevailed over the
Stingers in their first meeting of the
season, 7-0.
      Both
sides came out strong in the first period
but, despite numerous chances at both
ends, neither could put the puck in the
net. The Cavemen squandered a power play
opportunity as the Stingers put their big
penalty-killing line out and kept the
Cavemen at bay. Both goaltenders turned
away every shot they faced and the first
period ended scoreless.
      Andrew
Till got the Cavemen on the board in the
second period with a beautiful solo
effort, beating the Stinger defense and
lifting the puck past Mark Fassett. Craig
Wallace added a goal two minutes later
assisted by Andrew Till.
      Two
back-to-back penalties on the Cavemen
resulted in four minutes of a man-advantage
for the Stingers but they too were unable
to convert. Craig Nash, filling in for
the absent Eric Penzel, was inpenetrable
despite numerous shots and scrambles in
front of the net. In the fourth minute of
the Stinger's power play, Kenny Gray
picked up a loose puck in the neutral
zone, skated in and flipped a backhander
in off the far post, beating Fassett for
a short-handed goal. The second period
ended with the Cavemen up 3-0 and the
Stingers, who were playing with less than
their full roster, were beginning to show
signs of fatigue.
      Early
in the third frame, Kenny Gray notched
his second of the night from close in,
assisted by Gord Macpherson. With the
score 4-0 and the third period wearing on,
the Stingers seemed to run out of gas as
Sean Connolly went on a scoring rampage,
carding a natural hat trick with three
unanswered goals all in the third period.
The last of his three came on a power
play as Francis Albert of the Stingers
sat in the box on a high sticking call.
Assists came from Craig Wallace (2),
Andrew Till and Larry Waxman. Stingers'
goaltender Mark Fassett, last season's
Vezina trophy winner, expressed more than
a little frustration as things unfolded.
Craig Nash, putting on a clinic in
goaltending at the other end of the ice,
recorded the shut-out.
