Meercats
Flat In 6-1 Loss To Beavers

A
Phil Roveto hat trick served as the
foundation of the Beavers first win of
the season last night in a victory over
the visiting Meercats. Brian Fox, Randel
Chen and Ben Fisher added tallies for the
Beavers that were answered by just a
single goal off the stick of Meercat
sharpshooter Jared Ginsburg.
For
this reporter and many in the stands,
there was a sense of disappointment when
leaving the arena last night. The crowd
anticipated a much faster paced and
crisper passing contest between these two
clubs than that which they delivered.
Despite the score, there was no
domination by either team and no real
outstanding play making to speak of. Many
opportunities came off of broken plays
and bouncing pucks, of which there were
many. New additions to the Meercats, the
highly sought after Kris White and Craig
Meagher, provided some stability at the
blue line and added firepower; their
contributions weren't reflected on the
scoreboard.
On
a more interesting note, there was a
group of league officials and team scouts
gathered in the press box last night for
both the B Division and C Division
contests. From my vantage point it seemed
like they were comparing notes on the on-ice
talent, giving speculation to the fact
that rosters on both levels might not be
fully solidified yet. Early games in the
B division have exposed some inequality
between squads and the scouting reports
in C Division note some prospects that
might be moving up to the parent clubs in
the coming days.
While
this state of flux in the rosters is a
real nail biter for the players (many are
already relocating their families and
settling into new neighborhoods), the
league should be applauded for its
dedication to forming balanced teams and
putting a quality product on display for
the fans. The Thursday morning
quarterbacks in their barcaloungers will
never be satisfied, but Belmont 4-on-4
Hockey continues to strive to have a fun
and competitive league in the face of
expansion.
