Cavemen
club Beavers, Drag Pelts Back to Cave
By
Helmethead Johnson
      The
newly reformulated Cavemen launched the
new season with a solid win over last
season's top finishing team, the Beavers.
Gord Macpherson got the Cavemen on the
board early with the new club's first
goal of the season in the second minute
of play, assisted by linemate Jack Regan
and defenseman Jon Usich.
      In
the final minute of the first period,
Kenny Gray put his first marker on the
board assisted by Andrew Till. The only
penalty of the period came when Phil
Roveto pulled down Gordo sending him hard
to the ice on the injured shoulder
carried over from last season. Injuries
could prove to be an issue for the short-staffed
Cavemen. The period ended 2-0 and it
looked like a tough game was unfolding as
the Cavemen were playing with only two
spares on the bench and were looking like
they might run out of gas by the third
period. The Beavers had a full roster of
ten players, including Dave Tesarowski
who arrived a little late wearing his
full equipment having just played another
playoff game, moonlighting with his
Redwood City team the same evening
      In
the second period, the floodgates opened
for the Cavemen as they put eight more
goals on the board answered by a lone
marker from the Beavers' Dudley
Chamberlin. Scoring for the Cavemen were
Kenny Gray and Gord Macpherson, each
completing a hat trick, Jack Regan
potting one, and Jon Usich carding two.
Jon Usich also picked up two penalties
for holding and tripping. On the first
penalty, Kenny Gray managed some razzle-dazzle
that led to a short-handed goal. Jack
Regan fielded a hard slap shot from Ludo's
stick which hit his right foot and fell
to the ice in obvious agony. He was
forced to leave the game for the rest of
the second period but returned for the
third in a gutsy display of commitment to
the team. X-rays the following day
confirmed that he had suffered a clean
break in one of his toes and will likely
be out for the rest of the season. With
the loss of Jack, and a pre-season
scratch by one other Caveman veteran, the
Cavemen are looking very weak on the
bench and will need to find some warm
bodies to staff a second line.
      Eric
Penzel was very much on his game and
turned away many Beavers shots and
scrambles in front of the net. Ford
Goodman at the opposite end of the rink
was having a tough night. Perhaps he was
keeping one (or both) eyes on his kids
who were scampering around the arena
while Dad stood between the pipes. The
second frame ended with the Cavemen up 10-1.
      The
third period was less eventful. Jon Usich
added his third goal to complete his hat
trick before Randal Chen and Phil Roveto
each put the puck past Penzel as the
Paleolithic's powerful punch petered out.
      Thus
the game ended 11-3 and the players
proceeded promptly to the pub for pints.
