Stingers
squeak past Meercats in OT, 5-4

Friday
night's 9:30 contest saw the defending
champion Stingers take on the previous
season winner Meercats. The Stingers
struck first, with ex-captain Neil Parkin
capitalizing on a loose puck after a face-off
in the Meercats' zone and launching a
nasty wrister past goalie Kane Ng. The
teams then proceeded to trade goals, with
the Meercats tying the game and the
Stingers restoring the one goal lead, all
night.
Meercats
captain Dave Verderosa notched a hat-trick
including 2 in the 3rd period, the last
being the game-tying goal with only 3
minutes left - a rebound following a
Jared Ginsburg shot that Stingers goalie
Mark Fassett would love to have back.
The
Stingers got 2 goals from James Marihart
in the third and another from sub Phil
Roveto, all assisted by the Stingers'
points leader Tom Wisted. In overtime,
the Stingers defense and Fassett fought
off a flurry of activity from the hungry
Meercats, then Roveto gained possession,
stormed down the left wing, deked around
a defender and netminder Ng to score the
game winner.
It
was a hard fought game that could have
gone either way - a testament to both
organizations.
