Championship Games - Friday Night
A long grueling
Fall season of Belmont 4 on 4
hockey has come to an end, but
for the two championship games
this Friday night at the Iceland.
When the smoke clears and
Ausiello's closes it's doors
tomorrow night there will be two
teams savouring victory and two
other licking their wounds. It's
Belmont Cup time!
In the 8 pm time
slot, B Division titans,the Crush
face off against rivals CCCP. In
the regular season these two
squads split their series at two
wins apiece and the stats show
only a 3 goal differential over
the 4 contests.
CCCP is lead by high flying
forward, Doug Gould, who netted 9
tallies in Wednesday's semi-final
round against the Green Goblins.
The Crush have a bit more
balanced scoring machine, but
their captain, Daniel Hesselson,
is only second to Gould in the
season'e scoring race.Between the
pipes we find Crush goalie Mark
Fassett squaring off against Ford
Goodman of CCCP. Fassett has
posted the league's lowest goals
against avaerge this Fall, but
Goodman is a stalwart and often
not easy to solve for attacking
snipers.
At 9:30 pm,stepping
onto a clean sheet of ice, will
be 2 teams vying for the C
Division crown. The first place
Hermanators meet second ranked
Biohazard in another match of two
evenly paired teams. The
Hermanators lost only two games
in the regulation this season and
one of the losses came at the
hands of BioHazard. Will the
Hermanators repeat as C Divison
champs or will Biohazard emerge
the victors?
Plenty of free
tickets are still available for
both of Fridays' games. Come on
out and cheer for your favourites
and heckle your rivals.
Traditionally, regular season
awards are given out after the
games.

The second half of
the Fall-2007 season saw one of
the closest matches so far and
strong goaltending at both ends.
Crush, missing league-leading
goal scorer Daniel
Hesselson, went into the
game with a strategy of defensive
play and, as former Meercats
captain Dave Verserosa
put it, "no mistakes".
CCCP, playing with a complete
squad including the always
dangerous Doug Gould
and David Dilworth,
and the Crush both had several
quality scoring chances in the
first period, but the netminders
denied them repeatedly.
Neil
Parkin broke the 0-0 tie
midway through the second period,
extending an uncharacteristic
scoring streak to 3 games. CCCP
answered with a shorthanded goal,
a result of strong forechecking,
followed shortly by a power play
goal by Verderosa to restore the
lead. CCCP tied it again shortly
after a power play expired (last
season's Lady Byng trophy winner Rob
Haitani coming off his
second penalty of the night).
Verderosa put the Crush ahead for
good late in the third period,
and goalie Mark Fassett
closed the door for the rest of
the game for the "W".

Jonny
Martinez records first shutout of
the season

Jonny
Martinez was the key to
success of the Thin Ice in a hard
fought game against the One-Timers.
Curtis
Chen opened the scoring
with a great solo effort as he
fought off two defensemen in the
corner and stuffed the puck in
from behind the net. Also in the
first, Mark Bayer
scored off a nice play from Brian
Gaunce and Ian
King.
A scoreless second
was the result of a close
checking game as the One-Timers
tightened up the D while the Thin
Ice kept pressing.
In the last frame,
Brian Fox found
an opening to put a rebound into
the net off a shot from a blue
line by Roman Gendler.
Late in the game, Mark Bayer
stuffed home another tally to
complete a two-goal night.
The One-Timers
pushed hard in the third but
Jonny Martinez was unbeatable
sliding from post to post to stop
several close range shots and
retain his well-earned shutout.
The post-Labor Day
rematch promises to be another
interesting rendezvous between
these two teams with One-Timers
looking to even the series.

C DIVISION
WEEK #2 PREVIEW

With the first
series of games under their belts,
all four C Division teams return
to Iceland this coming Friday
night in an attempt to make their
presence known in the standings
early in this young season.
Thin Ice hosts
the Biohazards
in the 8 p.m. match-up with the
home team having hopes of
preventing the Hazards from
gaining sole possession of 1st
place.
The 9:30 p.m. game features the Hermanators
visiting the One-Timers
in a contest where the expansion
One-zies look put some numbers up
on the points chart and the Herm-ies
have their sights on remaining
undefeated.
Plenty of free tickets are still
available at the rink box office
for both these games. While there,
ask about the Gold Level seating
specials (next to Chris
Blackton at the
timekeepers table) and 5 Game
Paks.
Remember that September 5th is
the first Booble head Night
promotion of the season where a
number of lucky ticketholders
shall receive the very
collectible Darren Ang
bobble head doll.

DIVISION B
PLAYERS BRING THEIR "A GAME"

The 2007 Fall 4 on
4 hockey season got under way
before a less than capacity crowd
at Belmont Iceland with a B
Division double-header last
Wednesday evening. The first game
on the card was between the newly
formed CCCP and Crush
squads.
From the first drop of the puck
it was clear that the revamped B
Division would be presenting a
level of play greater than that
of any previous seasons in the
league. Fast skating and play
making, combined with lightning
fast goal tenders demanded that
every player bring his "A
game" as the first period
got underway.
Despite the fact that CCCP ran up
a 3-0 lead in the first period,
Crush was not to be denied and
brought the score to 3-2 by mid
way thru the second stanza. CCCP
replied with two tallies and lead
5-2 until Crush fought back with
a late rally shortly before the
second buzzer.
The seesaw battle continued in
the final period and the end of
regulation play the score board
showed a tie score of 5-5 and
group of very tired skaters. CCCP
put the game away late in the
overtime period for a 6-5 victory.

The gallery gods had their eyes
on CCCP's Doug Gould
for most of the game and their
early predictions are that Mr.
Gould is the impact player to
watch this season, much as Daniel
Hesselson was in the
Spring and Joe Balan
the season before that. Though
the season has barely started and
a number of fan favorites are
missing from the team rosters,
Belmont 4 on 4 hockey followers
are excited about the new season.
