Stingers
win Season Championship in thriller
against the Beavers, 4-2

The
winter 2006-07 Belmont 4-on-4 league
season came to a thrilling close with an
exciting final game between the regular
season leaders, the Stingers and Beavers.
In a close and exciting game which saw
stellar goaltending and plenty of
exciting scoring chances, the 2 teams
exchanged goals in the 3rd period, down
to the last minute.
The
first 2 periods were scoreless, a
testament to the goaltending and
defensive strengths on both sides. With
an enthusiastic crowd cheering on (and
taking care of the beer), the Beavers
struck first with a sniper shot to the
top corner by Phil Roveto that beat
Stingers goalie Mark Fassett cleanly. But
the Stingers responded with a goal by
James Marihart to tie the score at 1.
Roveto
(who shared the Most Improved Player
honors) beat Fassett again to retake the
lead a few minutes later. With just under
5 minutes remaining, the Beavers took a
penalty for too many on the ice, and Tom
Allen tied it up at 2 on the ensuing
power play with 3:36 left, assisted by
brother Mark and Dave Cunningham (Video).
A
moment later Keith Taylor snuck up behind
Roveto, who was about to take a slap shot
from the point, and stole the puck for a
breakaway. Roveto was caught tripping the
theif and went into the box with 2:52
remaining. On the power play again, Dave
Cunningham fed Mark Allen a perfect pass
up the middle, who beat defenseman
Ludovic Legrand and then goalie Ford
Goodman with a wicked wrist shot to the
stick side: 3-2 Stingers with 1:23 left
in the period (Video).
Despite
a late (0:42 left) penalty against the
Stingers and pulling the goalie to go 5
on 3, the Beavers were unable to score
again, and Mark Allen put the game away
with an empty net goal with only 9
seconds left to play.
