Beavers
Chisel Through Resurgent Gerihatricks
By Helmethead
Johnson
      In
what may have been one of the closest
fought games of the season, the first
place Beavers came from behind to squeak
past the 5th place Gerihatricks who were
coming off a big win in their last outing.
      Phil
Roveto got the Beavers on the board early
with a goal assisted by Phil Bergeron and
Dave Tesarowski. Paul Cousineau answered
for the Gerihatricks with an unassisted
breakaway from center ice that he top-shelved
with a strong wrister past goalie Ford
Goodman. The Gerihatricks then took the
lead when Andy Han fed a nice pass across
to Gord Macpherson who buried it in the
open net. The Beavers tied it up late in
the first period on a goal from Simon
Turcott assisted by Dudley Chamberlin.
      The
back-and-forth contest continued as Andy
Han picked up a rebound and put it past
Goodman early in the second period to put
the Gerihatricks ahead again. Both
goaltenders played very well, turning
away many shots and the period ended with
the Gerihatricks leading 3-2 and hoping
to keep it together in the third to pull
off the upset.
      In
the third, Phil Roveto tied things up
with a goal at 5:25 and 35 seconds later
he struck again to put the Beavers ahead.
A rookie referee, unfamiliar with the
offside rule, failed to call a blue line
infraction, which led to the immediate
goal by the Beavers. Cranky complaints by
the Gerihatricks bench failed to impress
the refs.
      In
the middle of the third period, Brent
Jenkins picked up a loose rebound in
front of the Beavers' goal and put it
past Goodman to tie things up at 4-4. The
game remained tied until 3:02 in
regulation when the Beavers scored what
proved to be the game winner, on another
controversial missed offside call. More
complaining from the disgruntled grumpy
old men of the Gerihatricks who were
watching the blue line closely in front
of their bench (while the referee made
chatty conversation with the scorekeeper)
didnt change the outcome. The
Gerihatricks pulled goalie Mike Phipps in
the final minute for an extra attacker
but, despite relentless pressure, were
unable to get the puck past the powerful
Beaver defense and the game ended 5-4.
      The
referees weren't in the mood for calling
anything and the game was remarkably
penalty-free. Nobody was sent to the box.
      With
the win, the Beavers solidify their lock
on sole possession of first place and
look to wrap things up with a decisive
final game against the Youngbloods next
week.
