Meercats
Stun Beavers 6-5 in OT
By Deke Sherwood
      In
a battle of the haves and have-nots, the
league leading Beavers faced off last
night against the cellar dweller Meercats.
Coming into the contest the Beavers held
the hot hand, having steadily climbed
thru the ranks in the course of the past
few weeks to the top of the heap.
Conversely, the Meercats only had two
wins to their credit this season and had
been plagued by injury and disappointment.
      The
first entry on the score sheet was
credited to Ludovic Legrand early in the
first period, putting the Beavers out in
front. The Meercats answered with a goal
by sub player Mark Allen and a tally off
the stick of Will Mitchell. This lead was
short lived when Randal Chen chalked up
his 4th goal of the season, evening the
score.
      The
contest remained tied into the second
stanza until Dave Tesaarowski sunk a shot
from a sharp angle, beating Meercat
netminder Kane Ng who had just turned
away a number of cannon blasts from the
Beaver offense. Throughout the evening
the Beavers displayed heavy fire power
and tested Kane repeatedly.
      The
two teams battled up and down the ice
sheet until the Meercats broke loose with
3 consecutive goals in the third period
of play. Dave Verderosa began the flurry
with his 10th goal of the season and then
Jared Ginburg added two more, putting the
Beavers in the hole by the score of 5-3.
      This
lead wouldn't last for long. The Beavers
stepped up the intensity of their attack
and replied with two quick goals from
Ludo Legrand who completed his first hat-trick
of the season. As the clock ticked down,
the crowd waited for the Meercats to have
the third period collapse that they have
experienced time and time again in recent
games. The collapse never happened and
the two teams ran out the clock and
headed into overtime.
      It
seemed like the contest would be resolved
in a shootout until a Meercat attack
resulted in captain Dave Verderosa's game
winner, stunning the Beavers and their
home town fans.
The Beavers next face the Stingers and
the Meercats meet the Gerihatricks in
their final games before the holiday
break.
