Stingers
remain unbeaten in regulation with a 5-1
win over the Gerihatricks
By Neil Parkin and
Gord Macpherson
      The
Stingers continued their solid team play
with a convincing win over the
Gerihatricks Friday night, scoring 5
straight goals before finally giving one
up with 6 minutes remaining in the 3rd
period to spoil goalie Mark Fassett's bid
for a shutout.
      The
Gerihatricks lone marker came off the
stick of Gord Macpherson who extended his
goal-scoring streak to seven games dating
back to the pre-season exhibition game.
      Two
goals by Francis Albert, who managed to
find a fertile patch of ground parked in
front of Gerihatricks goalie Mike Phipps,
and one each from Rick Rees, Neil Parkin,
and David Cunningham were more than
enough to ensure victory, in spite of the
Stingers missing their leading scorer,
Keith Taylor. The absence was mitigated
by the able Jack Regan who subbed for one
of the missing players.
      The
Gerihatricks had many unconverted scoring
chances and unfortunate bounces of the
puck, and were stymied over and over by
Fassett, who also assisted on the
Stingers 3rd goal. Fassett guarded his
turf around the net with fierce intensity,
chasing away all who would dare to
approach too close - like a crazed
caveman. The UCHP are rumored to have
their eyes on him as a back-up goalkeeper.
On breaking the near shut-out, the
Gerihatricks were heard to mutter, "Couldn't
have happened to a nicer guy."
      With
the victory, the Stingers extended their
regulation play unbeaten streak and are 4-0-2
through the first 6 games of the season
to lead the league by 2 points over the
Youngbloods and UCHP. "We can't wait
to play UCHP next week", said Parkin,
"it could be a preview of the
championship game."
      The
Gerihatricks will face the high-scoring
Youngbloods in next week's Friday night
game and will need to conjure up some
offense if they are to have any hope of
breaking their mid-season slide.
      In
contrast to other recent games, this game
was notable for its relatively few
penalties. Only two penalties were called
in the entire game (one to each team) and
both sides were happy with the
improvement.
      In
a side note, the league will institute a
referee uniform checker before every game,
to make sure the officials never again
fly low during a game.
