Kalkhof (5-1) faced the minimum number of batters through the first 6.2 innings before finally allowing a hit. The left-hander worked 7.1 innings and allowed three runs, only two of which were earned, on three hits. He issued two walks and tied a season high with 10 strikeouts. The Yellow Jackets managed just one base runner through the first six innings, a walk to Tyler Greene, but he was erased on a double play groundout.
North Carolina reliever Whitley Benson worked the final 1.2 innings and did not allow a run.
Aided by three Georgia Tech errors, North Carolina scored four runs and chased starting pitcher Aaron Walker from the game in the bottom of the second inning. Ryan Blake drove in the first run of the inning with a RBI double and Mell Adams added a sacrifice fly before the Tar Heels scored two unearned runs on a pair of two-out errors by Tech shortstop Tyler Greene.
Farrell belted a two-run homer, his seventh of the season, to give the Tar Heels a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Matt Murton broke up the no-hitter with two outs in the top of the seventh when he hit a solo home run off the left field scoreboard, his ninth of the season. The Yellow Jackets added two more runs in the top of the eighth inning to cut the lead to 6-3. Jeremy Slayden walked and scored when Steven Blackwood legged out an infield hit and UNC shortstop Chad Prosser threw the ball away. Tyler Greene singled and scored on Eric Patterson's RBI groundout.
The Tar Heels answered with an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Farrell doubled off the center field fence, stole third base and scored on a wild pitch.
Walker (2-1) was the losing pitcher after allowing four runs, but just one earned run, in 1.2 innings.
Georgia Tech and North Carolina will conclude the series on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Radio coverage will be available on WREK Radio (91.1 FM in Atlanta), while live statistics and the radio broadcast will be available on the internet at www.ramblinwreck.com.
