some are dead and some are living...

Tributes

Here you will find tributes to the people of the Beatle world...Beatles, friends, and family--dead and living. This is not complete, and probably never will be, but I am here to give tribute to those people who mean so much in the Beatles world. God Bless them all!

John Lennon
1940-1980

"Here Today" by Paul McCartney

And if I say I really knew you well,
What would your answer be?
If you were here today.
Uh, uh, uh, here today.

Well, knowing you,
You'd probably laugh and say
That we were worlds apart.
If you were here today.
Uh, uh, uh, here today.

But as for me,
I still remember how it was before
And I am holding back the tears no more.
Uh, uh, uh,
I love you, uh.

What about the time we met? (what about the time?)
Well, I suppose that you could say
That we were playing hard to get.
Didn't understand a thing,
But we could always sing.

What about the night we cried? (what about the night)
Because there wasn't any reason
Left to keep it all inside.
Never understood a word,
But you were always there with a smile.

And if I say I really loved you
And was glad you came along.
Then you were here today,
Uh, uh, uh, for you were in my song.

Uh, uh, uh, here today.

"All Those Years Ago" by George Harrison

I'm shouting all about love
While they treated you like a dog
When you were the one who had made it
so clear
All those years ago.

I'm talking all about how to give
They don't act with much honesty
But you point the way to the truth when you say
All you need is love.

Living with good and bad
I always look up to you
Now we're left cold and sad
By someone the devil's best friend
Someone who offended all.

We're living in a bad dream
They've forgotten all about mankind
And you were the one they backed up to
the wall
All those years ago
You were the one who Imagined it all
All those years ago.

Deep in the darkest night
I send out a prayer to you
Now in the world of light
Where the spirit free of the lies
And all else that we despised.

They've forgotten all about God
He's the only reason we exist
Yet you were the one that they said was
so weird
All those years ago
You said it all though not many had ears
All those years ago
You had control of our smiles and our tears
All those years ago

"The Late Great Johnny Ace" by Paul Simon

I was reading a magazine
And thinking of a rock and roll song
The year was 1954
And I hadh't been playing that long
When a man came on the radio
And this is what he said
He said I hate to break it
To his fans
But Johnny Ace is dead
Well, I really wasn't
Such a Johnny Ace fan
But I felt bad all the same
So I sent away for his photograph
And I waited till it came
It came all the way from Texas
With a sad and simple face
And they signed it on the bottom
From the Late Great Johnny Ace
It was the year of The Beatles
It was the year of The Stones
It was 1964
I was living in London
With the girl from the summer before
It was the year of The Beatles
It was the year of The Stones
A year after J.F.K.
We were staying up all night
And giving the days away
And the music was flowing
Amazing
And blowing my way
On a cold December evening
I was walking through the Christmas tide
When a stranger came up and asked me
If I'd heard John Lennon had died
And the two of us
Went to this bar
And we stayed to close the place
And every song we played
Was for The Late Great Johnny Ace

"Empty Garden" by Elton John

What happened here
As the New York sunset disappeared
I found an empty garden among the flagstones there
Who lived here
He must have been a gardener that cared a lot
Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop
And now it all looks strange
It's funny how one insect can damage so much grain

And what's it for
This little empty garden by the brownstone door
And in the cracks along the sidewalk nothing grows no more
Who lived here
He must have been a gardener that cared a lot
Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop
And we are so amazed we're crippled and we're dazed
A gardener like that one no one can replace

And I've been knocking but no one answers
And I've been knocking most all the day
Oh and I've been calling oh hey hey Johnny
Can't you come out to play

And through their tears
Some say he farmed his best in younger years
But he'd have said that roots grow stronger if only he could hear
Who lived there
He must have been a gardener that cared a lot
Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop
Now we pray for rain, and with every drop that falls
We hear, we hear your name

Johnny can't you come out to play in your empty garden

"I Just Shot John Lennon" by the Cranberries

It was the fearful night of December 8th.
He was returning home from the studio late.
He had perseptively known that it wouldn't be nice.
Because in 1980, he paid the price.

John Lennon died. [X6]

With a Smith & Wesson 38,
John Lennon's life was no longer a debate.
He should have stayed at home,
He should have never cared,
And the man who took his life declared,

He said I just shot John Lennon.
He said I just shot John Lennon.
What a sad and sorry and sickening sight.
What a sad and sorry and sickening night.
What a sad and sorry and sickening sight.
What a sad and sorry and sickening night.

Ah, ah ah ah, ah...

I just shot John Lennon.
He said I just shot John Lennon.
What a sad and sorry and sickening sight.
What a sad and sorry and sickening night.
What a sad and sorry and sickening sight.
What a sad and sorry and sickening night.

Ah, ah ah ah, ah...

"Sgt. Pepper's Band"
(Words and Music by Joan Baez)

I never knew you meant that much to me
Why did I pour a candle when you died
Find a picture of you walking in Central Park
With the iron woman by your side
That candle burned for twenty days
Most of my best friends came to mourn
And talk about the good ole days

Before my friends and I were born
Now I think I understand
That it was Sgt. Pepper's band
That put the sixties into song
Where have all the heroes gone?

Lucy in the sky with the lads from Liverpool,
Drop some acid, meet the Queen

Coming out of both eyes of the hurricane

You sang your music sweet and clean.
You may not want my poetry,
I surely do not want your fame,
You rose over the dawn of my early history
I'll pay you tribute all the same
Now I think I understand
That it was Sgt. Pepper's band
That put the sixties into song
Where have all the heroes gone?
Where have they gone?
Where have they gone?

Where have all the heroes gone?
Where have all the heroes gone?

It was a diamond studded hard day's night
They say everyone was there
I must have heard you from my mother's arms
And I must have thought somebody cared
I live in the age of cosmic maniacs
One of them put a bullet in your side
New York City, 1980
The day the sixties finally died

Now I know I understand
That it was Sgt. Pepper's band
That put the sixties into song
Where have all the heroes gone?
Where have they gone?
Where have they gone?
Where have all the heroes gone?
Where have all the heroes gone?

George Harrison
1943-2001

"Never Without You" by Ringo Starr

We were young, it was fun
And we couldn't lose
Time were right, overnight
We were headline news
Crazy days and reckless nights
Limosuines and bright spotlights
We were brothers through it all

And your song will play on without you
And this world won't forget about you
Every part of you was in your song
Now we will carry on... Never Without you
(Without you Without You) Within you without you
Here comes the song it's about you

Here today, not alone
With my memories
Life is strange how things change
It's reality
You played a beautiful melody
That keeps on haunting me
I can always feel you by my side

And your song will play on without you
And this world won't forget about you
Every part of you was in your song
Now we will carry on... Never Without you
(Never Without You) Within you without you
(Within you without you)
Here comes the song it's about you

I know all things must pass
And only love will last
I'll always love the memory of you and me
Take it away Eric

And your song will play on without you
And this world won't forget about you
Every part of you was in your song
Now we will carry on...Never Without you
(Never Without You)Within you without you
(Within you without you)
I think that love is about you

"Weeping Guitar" by Dave Kirby

Oh boy, I heard the news today
I heard a guitar gently play
My eyes filled, then tears poured
Through every bar of 'My Sweet Lord.'

Through the tears, I saw a face
Another time, another place
A nineteen sixties Matthew Street
With echoed sounds of merseybeat.

I see four lads who shook the world
Hear rock n roll and screaming girls
See John and Paul and Ringo Starr
With a quiet boy on lead guitar.

From the lofted heights you reached
Peace and love is what you preached
'Here comes the sun' we heard you play:
It set forever, for you today.

John awaits in familiar white
To sing duets with you tonight
With memories of yesturday
When troubles seemed so far away.

Across the world the tears fall
Like moisture on the 'cavern' walls
For you guitar forever sleeps
While all around it gently weeps.

Stuart Sutcliffe
1940-1962

John:"I looked up to Stu. I depended on him to tell me the truth. Stu would tell me if something was good and I'd believe him. We were awful to him sometimes. Especially Paul, always picking on him. I used to explain to him afterwards that we didn't disklike him, really."

Stuart Sutcliffe is sometimes left out on Beatles' sites. I loathe that. Stuart was a Beatle, and one of John's best friends. He was not the greatest bass player, but he had talent. He was truly an artist. A very talented artist, I might add. I've often looked at photographs and just thought he looked so cool! His swift hair combed back and those really cool sunglasses...cool. I don't know too much about Stuart, but I realize that he must have been someone marvelous, and must not be forgotten.

Brian Epstein
1934-1967

"He dedicated much of his life to the Beatles. We liked and loved him. He was one of us. There is no such thing as a death. It is a comfort to us all to know that he is OK." --George Harrison

Brian Epstein has often been declared the "fifth" Beatle, and he deserves that recognition. I've read that George thought that Brian deserved the MBE the most, and that it stood for "Mr. Brian Epstein." Well, Mr. Brian Epstein was the one that gave us the Beatles. He was their manager, after all, wasn't he? He deserves so much more credit than he receives and I would feel guilty and traitor if I didn't pay tribute to him. So, I'm here to say that I appreciate all that he did, and I'm glad he was there with the Beatles...and Brian, I love you!

"Brian would be really happy to hear how much we loved him." --Paul McCartney

Mal Evans
1936-1976

"...he was great at it because he would never hurt anyone...." --Ringo Starr
"Mal was a big loveable bear of a roadie..." --Paul McCartney
"He loved his job, he was brilliant, and I often regret that he got killed. Right to this day I keep thinking,'Mal, where are you?' If he only he was out there now. He was such good fun, but he was always very helpful:he could do everything. He had a bag that developed over the years, because always be: 'Mal, have you got an Elastoplast? Mal, have you got a screwdriver? Mal, have you got a bottle of this? Have you got that?' And he always had everything. If he didn't have it, he'd get it very quickly. He was one of those people who loved what he was doing and didn't have any problem about service. Everybody serves somebody in one way or another, but some people don't like the idea. Mal had no problem with it. He was very humble, but not without dignity; it was not belittling for him to do what we wanted, so he was perfect for us because that was what we needed." --George Harrison
"It was a saying of Mal's that: 'To serve is to rule.'" --Paul McCartney

How can anyone forget Mal? He was the Beatles' roadie and friend and as I read about the things they say about him I know that they must have loved him very much. As you can infer from the above quotes, the Beatles loved Mal very much, and you should, too! I didn't know Mal personally, but he seems like one of the nicest, gentlest people in the world...a gentle giant, you might say. God Bless you, Mal!

Oh my gosh! There are really NO Mal Evans web sites out there! :( I couldn't find any! But here is a little biography on Mal from the Internet Beatles Album! If you have a Mal site, email me! Thank you!

Linda McCartney
1941-1998

"When I think of Linda... I think of a diamond. You look at the various facets of it and every facet you look at ... she was greater." Sir Paul McCartney

"Maybe I'm Amazed" by Paul McCartney

Maybe I'm amazed at the way you love me all the time
Maybe I'm afraid of the way I love you
Maybe I'm amazed at the the way you pulled me out of time
And hung me on a line
Maybe I'm amazed at the way I really need you.

Maybe I'm a man and maybe I'm a lonely man
Who's in the middle of something
That he dosen't really understand.

Maybe I'm a man and maybe you're the only woman
Who could ever help me
Baby won't you help me understand.

Maybe I'm amazed at the way you're with me all the time
Maybe I'm afraid of the way I leave you
Maybe I'm amazed at the way you help me sing my song
Right me when I'm wrong
Maybe I'm amazed at the way I really need you.
A Great Website about Linda!

Maureen Cox Starr
1946-1994

I really do not know that much Maureen, Ringo's first wife. Yes, it is sad, I know, but I do know that she was married to Ringo, and made him very happy! From what I know, she was a sweet, caring person who loved Ringo. Sadly, she passed away in 1994 of leukemia. She was only forty-seven years old, which is very sad. Maureen was a loving and caring individual, and I know she is greatly missed.

It's getting hard to find links for some of these Beatlely People! Here's a page on Maureen from the She Loves You! site--Here!

Derek Taylor
1932-1997

Derek Taylor--how can anyone forget him? He's the guy that wrote all the liner notes for the Beatles CDs and videos...a very talented writer. I must say that I never even realized he had died until I started reading the editorial note to The Beatles Anthology and it mentioned that Taylor had worked on the project up until his death in 1997. I didn't feel like readng the book anymore after that...He has written a few books about his time with the Beatles, I think, but I haven't had a chance to read them yet. However, he was a very talented man who was the Beatles' press agent, among other bands, and he will be missed.

For more about Derek Taylor visit here!

Obviously, people always pay tribute to those who are dead, but I feel that the living need tributes, too. It's better to give people awards while they alive rather than wait till they're dead, isn't it? I mean, it seems like everybody waited to realize how great George Harrison was and hailed him after he died when he was great and talented the whole time.I have decided not to let that happen and give tribute to "...and some are living..."

Paul McCartney

"Paul McCartney is a genius."

We love you, Paul,
Oh, yes, we do
We love the way you smile
You send us through.
When you're not near to us,
We're blue!
Oh, Paul, we love you!

Ringo Starr

"And where would they be without the steady beat of your backbeat, that's what I'd like to know."

We love you, Ringo,
Oh, yes, we do!
No matter where you go,
We follow you.
When you're not near to us, we're blue!
Oh, Ringo, we love you!

Neil Aspinall

I feel so bad when Neil is forgotten. I love Neil! He's awesome! He was not just the Beatles' road manager, but one of their closest and highly trusted friends. Some people have considered Neil Aspinall the "fifth Beatle", which could be true since he was the one to stand for George while he was sick during the Ed Sullivan Show performance. However, I don't believe in fifth Beatles so I won't call him the fifth Beatle. Neil Aspinall was there with the Beatles during the best and worst of times and deserves accolade all around.

Here's a bit about Neil right here!

George Martin

The Beatles talented producer... he was the one who worked with the Beatles in the studio and introduced them to several new instruments and sounds. He helped the Beatles grow musically and he realized from the start that they had something special...and, of course, he was right. George Martin was very special and played a key part in the Beatles' career...he definitely deserved two of the highest honors ever, knighthood and a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

A very cool George Martin Site!

"WOMAN" by John Lennon

Woman I can hardly express,
My mixed emotion at my thoughtlessness,
After all I'm forever in your debt,
And woman I will try express,
My inner feelings and thankfullness,
For showing me the meaning of succsess,
oooh well, well,
oooh well, well,

Woman I know you understand
The little child inside the man,
Please remember my life is in your hands,
And woman hold me close to your heart,
However, distant don't keep us apart,
After all it is written in the stars,
oooh well, well,
oooh well, well,

Woman please let me explain,
I never mean(t) to cause you sorrow or pain,
So let me tell you again and again and again,
I love you (yeah, yeah) now and forever,
I love you (yeah, yeah) now and forever,
I love you (yeah, yeah) now and forever,
I love you (yeah, yeah)....

Cynthia Lennon

Cynthia was John Lennon's first wife. She loved John very much, and I'm glad she was there for him. She is the loving mother of John's first son, Julian, and has always been there for him, too. I've read of how she handled the whole John-Yoko thing, and she remained a polite lady, which is extremely admirable. Cynthia lamented when she and John were divorced and she still hopes and believes that someday she and John will be reunited. I hope that, too. Perhaps someday Cynthia will be able to be with John again someday, somewhere, somehow...

"DARK SWEET LADY" BY GEORGE HARRISON
My dark sweet lady
You really got to me
You gave me everything
I've really fallen.

You came and helped me through
When I'd let go
You came from out the blue
Never have known what I'd done without you.

My dark sweet lady
Your heart so close to mine
You shine so heavenly . . . and
I love you dearly.

Pattie Boyd

"SOMETHING" BY GEORGE HARRISON
Something in the way she moves
Attracts me like no other lover
Something in the way she woos me

I don't want to leave her now
You know I believe her now

Somewhere in her smile she knows
That I don't need no other lover
Something in her style that shows me

Don't want to leave her now
You know I believe her now

You're asking me will my love grow
I don't know, I don't know
You stick around now it may show
I don't know, I don't know

Something in the way she knows
And all I have to do is think of her
Something in the things she shows me

Don't want to leave her now
You know I believe her now

Barbara Bach

"What in the...World"
(by Ringo Starr, Mark Hudson, Dean Grakal, and Steve Dudas)

I remember it all,
That magical moment i'll never forget.
We started to fall
Higher and higher in love than i thought i could get.
It was so hard to find someone and then i found you.

What it world would i do
Living in a world without you?
Me and the sky would be blue,
Bluer than i ever knew.
The sun will shine but there'll be no light
And nothing to look forward to
In a world without you.

Just you and i,
Passionate lovers forever this time.
Our hearts couldn't lie,
Never say never whenever you don't want to try.
Sometimes it's hard but we'll get through,
We always have, we always do.

What it world would i do
Living in a world without you?
Me and the sky would be blue,
Bluer than i ever knew.
The sun will shine but there'll be no light
And nothing to look forward to
In a world without you.

Being in love letting our feelings show,
Let 'em show, (let em show)
Let me tell you again what you already know.
Ah -

What it world would i do (would i do)
Living in a world without you? (without you)
Me and the sky would be blue, (will be blue)
Bluer than i ever knew. (i ever knew)
The sun will shine but there'll be no light (no light)
And nothing to look forward to
In a world without you.

Ah yeah -
Ah - yeah
Ah - yeah
