"Free as a Bird" (Lennon/Harrison/McCartney/Starr)--The original demo was recorded in 1977.

Free as a bird
It's the next best thing to be
Free as a bird

Home, home and dry
Like a homing bird I'll fly
As a bird on wings

Whatever happened to
The life that we once knew?
Can we really live without each other?

Where did we lose the touch
That seemed to mean so much?
It always made me feel so...

Free as a bird
Like the next best thing to be
Free as a bird

Home, home and dry
Like a homing bird I'll fly
As a bird on wings

Whatever happened to
The life that we once knew?
Always made me feel so free

Ah...
Ah...
Ah...

Free as a bird
It's the next best thing to be
Free as a bird
Free as a bird
Free as a bird
Oooooo

Free...

Turn out nice again, mother.

To the top, Johnny!

"Speech: John Lennon" (Speech)--John Lennon talks about...

We were four guys, that, eh... I met Paul, said, "Do you wanna join my band", you know, and then George joined, and then Ringo joined. We were just a band that made it very, very big, that's all.

To the top, Johnny!

"That'll Be the Day" (Allison/ Holly/ Petty)--Recorded by the Quarrymen in Liverpool, 1958.

Well that'll be the day
When you say goodbye
Yeah that'll be the day
When you make me cry
You say you're gonna leave
You know it's a lie
'Cause that'll be the day
When I die.

Well you gave me all your loving
And all your turtle doving
All your hugs and kisses
And your money too
You say you love me baby
Still you tell me maybe
That somebody, well I'll be through

Well that'll be the day
When you make me cry
That'll be the day
When you say goodbye
You say you're gonna leave
You know it's a lie
'Cause that'll be the day
When I die

Yeah that'll be the day
When you say goodbye
Yeah that'll be the day
When you make me cry
You say you're gonna leave
You know it's a lie
'Cause that'll be the day
When I die

Well when Cupid shot his dart
He shot it at your heart
So if we'll ever part
And I'll leave you
You say and hold me
And you tell me boldly
That some day, well I'll be through

Well that'll be the day
When you say goodbye
Yeah that'll be the day
When you make me cry
You say you're gonna leave
You know it's a lie
'Cause that'll be the day
When I die

Yeah that'll be the day
Oh, oh that'll be the day
Oh, oh that'll be the day
Oh, oh that'll be the day

To the top, Johnny!

"In Spite of All the Danger" (McCartney/Harrison)--One of the few Harrison and McCartney collaborations I've seen on record...

In spite of all the danger
In spite of all that may be
I'll do anything for you
Anything you want me to
If you'll be true to me

In spite of all the heartache
That you may cause me
I'll do anything for you
Anything you want me to
If you'll be true to me

I'll look after you
Like I've never done before
I'll keep all the others
From knocking at your door

In spite of all the danger
In spite of all that may be
I'll do anything for you
Anything you want me to
If you'll be true to me

Yeah!

In spite of all the heartache
That you may cause me
I'll do anything for you
Anything you want me to
If you'll be true to me
I'll do anything for you
Anything you want me to
If you'll be true to me

To the top, Johnny!

"Speech: Paul McCartney" (Speech)--Paul talks about...

Sometimes I'd borrow a tape recorder, a gurndig with a little green eye and we'd sort of go round to my house and tried to record little things such as... I remember 'Hallelujah, I Just Love Her So', 'cause I had the Eddie Cochran record.

But those were very much home demos, very bad quality. I think a couple of those still exits.

To the top, Johnny!

"Hallelujah, I Love Her So" (Charles)--Paul had the record with Eddie Cochran's version, which influenced this cover of the song prominently.

Let me tell you about a girl I know,
She's my baby and I love her so.
Every morning when the sun comes up,
She brings me coffee in my favorite cup.
That's why I know, yes I know,
Hallelujah I just love her so.

When I call her on the telephone,
She says: baby, I'm all alone.
By the time I count from one to four,
She'll be knocking on my door.

In the evening when the sun goes down
And there ain't nobody else around,
She kisses me and she holds me tight.
She says: baby everything is alright.
That's why I know, that's why I know
Hallelujah I just love her so.
Hallelujah I just love her so,
Hallelujah I just love that chick so.

To the top, Johnny!

"You'll Be Mine" (Lennon/McCartney)--A hilarious song that shows Mr. John Lennon's fondness for word-play developed early...

Well darling all the night
You'll be mine and I know
You'll be mine
Till you die
You'll be mine

And so all the night
You'll be mine
You'll be mine
And the stars
Always shine
You'll be mine
Oh

My darling.
When you burnt that toast the other morning
I, I looked into you eyes and I could see that National Health eyeball
and I loved you, like I never done, I have never done before!

Oh darling
In your eyes
And you'll be mine
You will be mine
You'll be mine
At the star and so
You'll be mine

To the top, Johnny!

"Cayenne" (McCartney)--Recorded in Paul's home with Stuart Sutcliffe on bass, and no drummer.

Instrumental

To the top, Johnny!

"Speech: Paul McCartney" (Speech)--Paul chats about...

First of all we made a recording with a fella called Tony Sheridan. We were working in a club called 'The Top Ten Club' in Hamburg and we made a recording with him called 'My Bonnie' which got to number Five in the German hit parade, but, it never, it didn't do a thing over here

To the top, Johnny!

"My Bonnie" (Traditional, Tony Sheridan)--The Beatles backed up Tony Sheridan on this song...this record would be the record that would cause Mr. Epstein to venture down to the Cavern...

My Bonnie lies over the ocean
My Bonnie lies over the sea
My Bonnie lies over the ocean
Oh bring back my Bonnie to me

My Bonnie lies over the ocean
My Bonnie lies over the sea
Well my Bonnie lies over the ocean
Yeah bring back my Bonnie to me

Yeah bring back, ah bring back
Oh bring back my Bonnie to me to me
Oh bring back, oh bring back
Oh bring back my Bonnie to me

Well my Bonnie lies over the ocean
My Bonnie lies over the sea
Yeah my Bonnie lies over the ocean
Oh I said bring back my Bonnie to me

Yeah bring back, ah bring back
Oh bring back my Bonnie to me to me
Oh bring back, ah bring back
Oh bring back my Bonnie to me

To the top, Johnny!

"Ain't She Sweet" (Ager/Yellen)--The boys usually did this song like Gene Vincent, but they needed to rough it up for the German audience so they made a "a harder version...more like a march." There is no Tony Sheridan on this record.

Oh ain't she sweet
Well see her walking down that street
Yes I ask you very confidentially
Ain't she sweet?

Oh ain't she nice
Well look her over once or twice
Yes I ask you very confidentially
Ain't she nice?

Just cast an eye
In her direction
Oh me oh my
Ain't that perfection?

Oh I repeat
Well don't you think that's kind of neat?
Yes I ask you very confidentially
Ain't she sweet?

Oh ain't she sweet
Well see her walking down that street
Well I ask you very confidentially
Ain't she sweet?

Oh ain't that nice
Well look it over once or twice
Yes I ask you very confidentially
Ain't she nice?

Just cast an eye
In her direction
Oh me oh my
Ain't that perfection?

Oh I repeat
Well don't you think that's kind of neat?
Yes I ask you very confidentially
Ain't she sweet?

Oh ain't she sweet
Well see her walking down that street
Well I ask you very confidentially
Ain't she sweet?
Well I ask you very confidentially
Ain't she sweet?

To the top, Johnny!

"Cry For A Shadow" (Lennon/Harrison)--Rare and sweeeet instrumental with the Lennon/Harrison composition known on disc.

Instrumental

To the top, Johnny!

"Speech: John Lennon" (Speech)--John Lennon talks again only about...

Brian was a beautiful guy, Brain Epstein, and he was a, an intuitive, theatrical guy and he knew we had something. He presented us well.

To the top, Johnny!

"Speech: Brian Epstein" (Speech)--Brian Epsteins talks a bit about....

I secured them an audition at Decca on New Year's Day, 1962. They came to London and stayed at the Royal Hotel paying 27 shillings a night for bed and breakfest. They were poor and I wan't rich but we all celebrated with Rum, Scotch and Coke which was becoming a Beatle drink even then.

To the top, Johnny!

"Searchin'" (Leiber/Stroller)--Recorded live on a mono tape at Decca.

Gonna find her, gonna find her

Well searching
Yeah I'm gonna searching
Searching every which a-way yeh yeh
Oh lord I'm searching
Ny good lord, searching
You know honey
Searching every which a-way yeh yeh yeh
But I'm like that northwest Mountie
You know I'll bring her in some day

Gonna find her, yeah ah, gonna find her

Well Charlie Chan, Simon Smith
Got nothing, child, on me
Sgt. Friday, Peter Gunn
And ooo Alan B
No matter where she's hiding
She's gonna see me coming
I'm gonna walk right down that street
Like a Bulldog Drummon

Yes, 'cause I been searching
Well searching
Oh my goodness
Searching every which a-way yeh yeh
But I'm like that northwest Mountie
You know I'll bring her in some day

Gonna find her, gonna find her
Ah... ooh ooh

Well Charlie Chan, Simon Smith
Got nothing, child, on me
Sgt. Friday, Peter Gunn
And ooo Alan B
Yeah no matter where she's hiding
She's gonna see me coming
I'm gonna walk right down that street
Like a Bulldog Drummon

Aah searching
Yeah I'm searching, um my my goodness
Searching every which a-way yeh yeh
But I'm like that northwest Mountie
You know I'll bring her in some day

Gonna find her, yeah, gonna find her
Yeah yeah lord, gonna find her
Ooo, gonna find her, yeah, yeah

To the top, Johnny!

"Three Cool Cats" (Leiber/Stroller)--Played at many of their performances, always had been an early favorite of the Beatles.

Three cool cats
Three cool cats
Are coming up in a beat up car
Spitting up a lift of candy bar
Talking on about how sharp they are
Three cool cats

Three cool chicks
Are walking down the street
Swinging their hips
Splitting up a bag of potato chips
I think cool cats really did flip
Three cool chicks
Yeah three cool chicks

Well up came that first cool cat
He said, "Man look at that
Man, do you see what I see?"
"Well I want that middle chick"
"I want that little chick"
"Hey man save once chick for me"
Hey, well three cool chicks
Three cool chicks

Well they love like angels from up above
And three cool cats really fell in love
But three cool chicks
Made three fools out of three cool cats
Three cool cats

Well up came that first cool cat
He said, "Man look at that
Man, do you see what I see?"
"Well I want that middle chick"
"I want that little chick"
"Hey man save one chick for me"
Yeah ah

Three cool chicks
Three cool chicks
They look like angels from up above
And three cool cats really fell in love
And three cool chicks
Made three fools out of three cool cats
Three cool cats

Three cool cats
Three cool cats

Three cool cats, oh three cool cats.

To the top, Johnny!

"The Shriek of Araby" (Emith/Wheeler/Snyder)--The phrase "not-arf"'s showed the Beatles humor.

Well I'm the sheik of Araby
Your love belongs to me
Well at night where you're asleep
Into your tent I'll creep
Aha

The stars that shine above
Will light our way to love
Ah you rule this world with me
I'm the sheik of Araby

Well I'm the sheik of Araby
Your love belongs to me
Wow oh at night where you're asleep
Into your tent I'll creep
Aha

The sun that shines above
Will light our way to love
You rule this world with me
I'm the sheik of Araby
Well I'm the sheik of Araby
Well I'm the sheik of Araby, yeah

The sheik of Araby...

To the top, Johnny!

"Like Dreamers Do" (Lennon/McCartney)--This song wasn't strong enough to be recorded at EMI, but it was decent at the time of the Decca audition. A group by the name of the Applejacks did a version of this song in 1964.

I, I saw a girl in my dreams
And so it seems that I will love her
Oh you, you are that girl in my dreams
And so it seems that I will love you

And I waited for your kiss
Waited for the bliss
Like dreamers do

And I,
Oh I'll be there, yeah
Waiting for you, you, you, you, you, you

You, you came just one dream ago
And now I know that I will love you
Oh I knew when you first said hello
That's how I know that I will love you

And I waited for your kiss
Waited for the bliss
Like dreamers do

And I, I I I I
Oh I'll be there, yeah
Waiting for you, you, you, you, you

You, you came just one dream ago
And now I know that I will love you
Oh I knew when you first said hello
That's how I know that I will love you

And I waited for your kiss
Waited for the bliss
Like dreamers do
Oh like dreamers do
Like dreamers do

To the top, Johnny!

"Hello Little Girl" (Lennon/McCartney)--The first song John Lennon ever wrote, as a sort of response to Paul McCartney's "I Lost My Little Girl."

Hello little girl
Hello little girl
Hello little girl

When I see you everyday
I say, "Mm mm hello little girl"
When you're passing on your way
I say, "Mm mm hello little girl"
When I see you passing by
I cry, "Mm mm hello little girl"
When I try to catch your eye
I cry, "Mm mm hello little girl"

I send you flowers but you don't care
You never seem to see me standing there
I often wonder what you're thinking of
I hope it's me and love love love

So I hope there'll come a day
When you'll say, "Mm you're my little girl"

It's not the first time that it's happened to me,
It's been a long lonely time
And it's funny funny to see that I'm about to lose my mind mind mind

So I hope there'll come a day
When you say, "Mm mm
You're my little girl, mm mm mm
You're my little girl, mm mm mm"
You're my little girl, oh yeah
You're my little girl

Do do do do do

To the top, Johnny!

"Speech: Brian Epstein" (Speech)--Beatles' manager Brian Epstein talks about...

Well, the recording test came and went. The people that decide about these things at Decca said 'No'. Well, you can imagine I was more worried about what I was going to say to the boysm having built up their hopes. So I allowed myself a final 24 hours t oexhaust the remaining disc companies and I booked into the Green Park Hotel. In the morning I took a cab to the EMI Office Block in Manchester Square, London, to meet the man who would within less than 2 years produce 16 number One discs by my artists.

To the top, Johnny!

"Besame Mucho" (Velazquiez/ Skylar)--The Beatles added the "cha cha boom!" part into this song for their audition for EMI with George Martin.

Besame, Besame Mucho
Each time I cling to your kiss I hear music divine
So, Besame, Besame Mucho
I'll love you forever,  say that you'll always be mine

Cha cha Boom!

Dearest one, if you should leave me,
Than each little dream would take wings and my life would be through
Oh, Besame, Besame Mucho
Ooh, love me forever, make all my dreams come true

Ooh!! This joy is something new, my arms enfolding you
Never knew this thrill before

Who ever thought I'd be holding you close to me
Whispering, "It's you I adore"?
Yes, so, dearest one, if you should leave me,
Then each little dream would take wings and my life would be through

Oh! so Besame, Besame Mucho
Yea, love me forever, make all my dreams come true

Ooh!! this joy is something new, my arms enfolding you
Never knew this thrill before

Who ever thought I'd be holding you close to me
Whispering, "It's you I adore"?
Yes, so, dearest one, if you should leave me,
Then each little dream would take wings and my life would be through

Oh, so Besame, Besame Mucho.
Yea, love me forever.  Make all my dreams come true.

Ooh, love you forever.  Make all my dreams come true.
Ooh, love you forever.  Make all my dreams come true.

To the top, Johnny!

"Love Me Do" (Lennon/McCartney)--An earlier version of the song, being a little slower and longer. Remember how Andy White was a drummer on the single and Ringo Starr played on the album version of this song? Well, it's Pete Best on this version! Also notice how nervous Paul is as he sings the "love me do" line, since John is occupied with the harmonica in his mouth.

Love, love me do.
You know I love you,
I'll always be true,
So please, love me do.
Whoa, love me do.

Love, love me do.
You know I love you,
I'll always be true,
So please, love me do.
Whoa, love me do.

Someone to love,
Somebody new.
Someone to love,
Someone like you.

Love, love me do.
You know I love you,
I'll always be true,
So please, love me do.
Whoa, love me do.

Love, love me do.
You know I love you,
I'll always be true,
So please, love me do.
Whoa, love me do.
Yeah, love me do.
Whoa, oh, love me do.

To the top, Johnny!

"How Do You Do It" (Murray)--Went to number one for Gerry and the Pacemakers, but the Beatles preferred to use their own material for their singles.

How do you do what you do to me?
I wish I knew
If I knew how you do it to me
I'd do it to you

How do you do what you do to me?
I'm feeling blue
Wish I knew how you do it to me
But I haven't a clue

You give me a feeling in my heart, ooh-la-la
Like an arrow piercing through it
I suppose that you think you're very smart
But won't you tell me how do you do it?

How do you do what you do to me?
I wish I knew
If I knew how you do it to me
I'd do it to you

You give me a feeling in my heart, ooh-la-la
Like an arrow piercing through it
I suppose that you think you're very smart
But won't you tell me how do you do it?

How do you do what you do to me?
I wish I knew
Wish I knew how you do it to me
But I haven't a clue

Wish I knew how you do it to me
I'd do it to you
Wish I knew how you do it to me
I'd do it to you

To the top, Johnny!

"Please Please Me" (Lennon/McCartney)--An earlier version of the Beatles first hit!

Last night I said these words to my girl,
I know you never even try, girl,
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Please please me, whoa yeah, like I please you.

You don't need me to show the way, love.
Why do I always have to say love,
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Please please me, whoa yeah, like I please you.

I don't wanna sound complainin',
But you know there's always rain in my heart (in my heart).
I do all the pleasin' with you, it's so hard to reason
With you, whoah yeah, why do you make me blue.

Last night I said these words to my girl,
I know you never even try, girl,
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Please please me, whoa yeah, like I please you.

To the top, Johnny!

"One After 909 (Sequence)" (Lennon/McCartney)--Listen to a fragment of this song, and hear Paul and Neil fighting (Paul doesn't have his plectrum!).

(take 3)
(fade in) I said move over once, move over twice
Come on baby don't be cold as ice
She said she's trav'ling on the one after 909

Picked up my bag, run to the station
Railman says you've got the the wrong location yeah
Picked up my bag, run right home
[What are you doing?

Ah, it's murder, man, I can't do it,
I can't keep it yp I'm just going...

Use your plec!

I haven't got one!

Fucking hell!

Use the plec... I've been trying to get them all day.

Well, your clothes have been brought hours ago.

I know but the case was hardly moved.

I said to you before, Paul, don't forget your plec ... with your clothes in.

I know but the cases are still up at the door.

I said do you want me to bring your case in and you just walked away!

I didn't think, I thought you said, I didn't really want...

Here we go!

George?]

(take 4)
(fade in) You've got the number wrong

Well she said she's trav'ling on the one after 909
I said move over honey I'm travelling on that line
I said move over once, move over twice
Come on baby don't be cold as ice
She said she's trav'ling on the one after 909
Oh yeah oh

Well my baby said she's trav'ling on the one after
[Oh fucking hell! I told you!

You see, it's you! It's you.

You said we'd miss out, a bit late, huh.

You're coming in during the solo.

You're coming in wrong, halfway through the solo!

Oh! What? Was it a 12-bar, was it...

Yeah, yeah, 4-bar... once again.

2,3, 1,2,3,4]

(take 5)
Said she's trav'ling on the one after 909 (fade out)

To the top, Johnny!

"One After 909 (Complete)" (Lennon/McCartney)--Not issued until many years later on Let it Be, but this is an earlier, younger version of the song that just wasn't good enough at the time for release.

My baby says she's trav'ling on the one after 909
I said move over honey I'm travelling on that line
I said move over once, move over twice
Come on baby don't be cold as ice.

I said I'm trav'ling on the one after 909 I begged her not to
go and I begged her on my bended knees,
You're only fooling around, you're fooling around with me.
I said move over once, move over twice
Come on baby don't be cold as ice.

I said I'm trav'ling on the one after 909
I got my bag, run to the station
Railman says you've got the the wrong location
I got my bag, run right home
Then I find I've got the number wrong

Well I said I'm trav'ling on the one after 909
I said move over honey I'm travelling on that line
I said move over once, move over twice
Come on baby don't be cold as ice.

I said we're trav'ling on the one after 9 0,
I said we're trav'ling on the one after 9 0,
I said we're trav'ling on the one after 909.

To the top, Johnny!

"Lend Me Your Comb" (Twomey/Wise/Weisman)--Recorded for Pop Go the Beatles.

Lend me your comb,
it's time to go home.
I got to go past,
my hair is a mess

Your mammie will scold,
your pappie will shout.
Unless we come in
the way we went out.

Kissing you was fun honey
but thanks for the date.
But I must come to run honey,
but you know baby it's getting late.

Just wait till I
say: my darling,
lend me your comb.
We got to go home.

Kissing you was fun honey
but thanks for the date.
But I must come to run, honey.
but sugar, it's getting late.

Just wait till I
say: my darling,
lend me your comb.
We got to go home.

To the top, Johnny!

"I'll Get You" (Lennon/McCartney)--Performed for the Beatles performance on Sunday Night at the Palladium.

Oh yeah, oh yeah,
Oh yeah, oh yeah
Imagine I'm in love with you,
It's easy, 'cause I know,
I've imagined I'm in love with you,
Many, many, many times before

It's not like me, to pretend,
But I'll get you, I'll get you in the end!
Yes I will, I'll get you in the end,
Oh yeah, oh yeah

I think about you night and day,
I need you, and it's true
When I think about you, I can say,
I'm never, never, never, never blue

So I'm telling, you my friend,
That I'll get you, I'll get you in the end,
Yes I will, I'll get you in the end,
Oh yeah, oh yeah

Well, there's gonna be a time,
Well I'm gonna change your mind
So you might as well resign yourself to me, oh yeah

Imagine I'm in love with you,
It's easy 'cause I know,
I've imagined I'm in love with you,
Many, many, many times before

It's not like me, to pretend,
But I'll get you, I'll get you in the end,
Yes I will, I'll get you in the end,
Oh yeah, oh yeah,
Oh yeah, oh yeah,

Woah yeah!

To the top, Johnny!

"Speech: John Lennon" (Speech)--John talks about....

We were performers in Liverpool, Hamburg and round the dance halls, you know and what we generated was fantastic. When we played Straight Rock and there was nobody to touch us in Britain, you know.

To the top, Johnny!

"I Saw Her Standing There" (Lennon/McCartney)--This song was recorded live in Sweden--cool.

One, two, free, four!

Well, she was just seventeen,
You know what I mean,
And the way she looked was way beyond compare.
So how could I dance with another (ooh)
And I saw her standin' there.

Well she looked at me, and I, I could see
That before too long I'd fall in love with her.
She wouldn't dance with another (whooh)
And I saw her standin' there.

Well, my heart went boom,
When I crossed that room,
And I held her hand in mine...

Whoah, we danced through the night,
And we held each other tight,
And before too long I fell in love with her.
Now I'll never dance with another (whooh)
Since I saw her standing there

Well, my heart went boom,
When I crossed that room,
And I held her hand in mine...

Whoah, we danced through the night,
And we held each other tight,
And before too long I fell in love with her.
Now I'll never dance with another (whooh)
Since I saw her standing there

To the top, Johnny!

"From Me to You" (Lennon/McCartney)--Aw, the Beatles plugging their number one single on my birthday... back in 1963!

If there's anything that you want,
If there's anything I can do,
Just call on me and I'll send it along
With love from me to you.

I've got everything that you want,
Like a heart that is oh, so true.
Just call on me and I'll send it along
With love from me to you.

I got arms that long to hold you
And keep you by my side.
I got lips that long to kiss you
And keep you satisfied, oooh.

If there's anything that you want,
If there's anything I can do,
Just call on me and I'll send it along
With love from me to you.
From me, to you.

To you, to you, to you.

To the top, Johnny!

"Money (That's What I Want)" (Gordy/Bradford)--Originally recorded by Barret Strong in 1959!

The best things in life are free
But you can keep 'em for the birds and bees.
Now gimme money (that's what I want)
That's what I want (that's what I want)
That's what I want, ye-ye-yeh,
That's what I want.

Money don't get everything it's true.
What it don't get I can't use.
So gimme money (that's what I want)
A little money (that's what I want)
That's what I want, ye-ye-yeh,
That's what I want.

Yeh gimme money (that's what I want)
A little money (that's what I want)
That's what I want (that's what I want)
So gimme money (that's what I want)
That's what I want, ye-ye-yeh,
That's what I want.

Your lovin' give me a thrill
But your lovin' don't pay my bill.
Now gimme money (that's what I want)
That's what I want (that's what I want)
That's what I want, ye-ye-yeh,
That's what I want.

Money don't get everything it's true.
What it don't get I can't use.
So gimme money (that's what I want)
A little money (that's what I want)
That's what I want, ye-ye-yeh,
That's what I want.

Yeh gimme money (that's what I want)
A little money (that's what I want)
That's what I want (that's what I want)
So gimme money (that's what I want)
That's what I want, ye-ye-yeh,
That's what I want.

"You Really Got a Hold on Me" (Robinson)--Smokey Robinson and the Miracles originally recorded this song back in 1962, as John kindly tells the audience.

I don't like you
But I love you
See that I'm always
Thinking of you
Oh, oh, oh,
You treat me badly
I love you madly
You've really got a hold on me
You've really got a hold on me, baby

I don't want you,
But I need you
Don't want to kiss you
But I need you
Oh, oh, oh
You do me wring now
My love is strong now
You've really got a hold on me
You've really got a hold on me, baby

I love you and all I want you to do
Is just hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me

I want to leave you
Don't want to stay here
Don't want to spend
Another day here
Oh, oh, oh, I want to split now
I just can quit now
You've really got a hold on me
You've really got a hold on me, baby

I love you and all I want you to do
Is just hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me

You've really got a hold on me
You've really got a hold on me

To the top, Johnny!

"Roll Over Beethoven" (Berry)--The above three songs all appeared on the Beatles' second album, With the Beatles, which, at the time of this recording (my birthday!), was not to be issued until four weeks later!

Well gonna write a little letter
Gonna mail it to my local D.J.
It's a rockin' little record
I want my jockey to play
Roll over Beethoven
I gotta hear it again today

You know my temperature's risin'
And the jukebox's blowin' a fuse
My hearts beatin' rhythm
And my soul keeps singing the blues
Roll over Beethoven
And tell Tchaikovsky the news

I got a rockin' pneumonia
I need a shot of rhythm and blues
I think I got it off the writer
Sittin' down by the rhythm review
Roll over Beethoven
We're rockin' in two by two

Well if you fell you like it
Well get your lover and reel and rock it
Roll it over and move on up
Just jump around and reel and rock it
Roll it over
Roll over Beethoven
A rockin' in two by two , oh

Well early in the mornin'
I'm a givin' you the warnin'
Don't you step on my blue suede showes
Hey little little
Gonna play my fiddle
Ain't got nothing to lost
Roll over Beethoven
And tell Tchaikovsky the news

You know she winks like a glow worm
Dance like a spinnin' top
She got a crazy partner
Oughta see 'em reel an rock
Long as she's got a dime
The music will never stop
Roll over Beethoven
Roll over Beethoven
Roll over Beethoven
Roll over Beethoven
Roll over Beethoven
And dig these rhythm and blues

To the top, Johnny!
