This work is a personal attempt to understand the youth of Adolf Hitler in Vienna. I examine the city and experiences that formed him as a man. For the young Hitler, Vienna was a city of great dreams and bitter disappointments.
The anti-semitism of Austria ran through the city like a mighty river, drenchng everything Hitler saw and heard.
When Hitler's armies later marched into Austria, Sigmund Freud feared for the safety of the city. "Hitler was very unhappy here," he said.
Shortly before committing suicide in his Berlin bunker, Hilter said to a friend that his only regret in life was that he had not destroyed Vienna. Did Hitler's experience in Vienna open the gates of hell?
