Sky Girls

Information of Anime

An alien race called Worms attacked Earth & wiped out a lot population of humans, a majority of it being males.  Because of the huge loss of the male population, young females are recruited into the army to battle back against the Worms.  Using mechas called Sonic Divers, three young girls, Otoha Sakurano, Karen Sonomiya, & Eika Ichijo, are the pilots to these machines to fight against the Worms.

Storyline (CONTAINS SPOILERS)

Below is a summary of the storyline I've seen.  This section does contain some spoilers.  If you haven't seen the series yet & don't want to be spoiled, skip this section.  If you want to know the story & want to see how I viewed it, read on.

This OVA is more of a promo or advertisement to Konomi's creation of the series.  It shows the Sonic Diver pilots' ability in fighting against the Worms when the military had doubts about the Sonic Diver project.  When the Worms started to target the ship fleet carrying the Sonic Divers, Otoha, Karen, & Eika spring into battle which gain them a victory.  Seeing the results, the military approved the project, but still have some doubts about it.  This is how the OVA ends.

My Personal Review

Sky Girls is another one of Konomi's creation.  The OVA seems to more of a fanservice promo about the series.  However, the girls seem to be on the loli side & their pilot suits are quite revealing.  This isn't really a show for everyone.

Animation

The character designs are mainly on the loli side for the girls.  The males seem to be normal adult sizes.  The girls are quite thin & long at their limbs.  They also have a child like appearance than teenage to young adult ones.  Even more weird is the pilot suits.  They look like revealing swimsuits as their crotch area seem to barely cover their bodies.  So very loli.

The Sonic Divers aren't any better.  They are more like suits as you can see the girls inside.  In fact, outside is more appropriate since the Sonic Divers are more like skeletons.  The girls go inside its stomach & use their arms & legs to move them.  Not surprisingly, the Sonic Divers aren't 3DCGS since the characters are inside those mechas.

The backgrounds are pretty nice, but quite plain for an OVA.  There isn't a lot of details.  The most you get are the girls in sexy positions.  Although the battle take place in the sky, it would have been nice to see some clouds here & there in detail.

The animation flow is pretty smooth.  Not much jerking, but it's a bit noticeable in the mecha fights.  It's not really a big deal unless you are really picky on how mechas should move.

As for the colour, it's balanced out quite nicely.  It's pretty bold & bright like most OVAs & it's toned out well without making the characters & background clash with one another.

Sound       

The sound effects are pretty good & clean.  Not much silly sounds, but they do appear at times.  Mainly for the perverted parts. 

The seiyuus aren't too bad in my opinion.  They role play their characters well in terms of their emotions.  But the girls sound a bit older than their look based on appearance.  It's kind of freaky to see these young girls almost talk like mature adults.

The music contains mostly pop songs.  Some of them are cute with those happy tones.  But it's not really something you want to get the soundtrack of.

Story

Basically showing the Sonic Divers in action against Worm during their project that is being tested with the military higher up having doubts about it.  I felt the OVA is more to promote the show as it only has one episode.  It does show signs of continuation, but not for the OVA.  Probably in a game or manga.  Or maybe from toys using the player's own creation.  The OVA is more of an introduction to Konomi's series lineup.

Overall Conclusion

Sky Girls is not something you want to watch really.  If you aren't a fan of the series, you will not enjoy it very much.  I assume a fan of the series will like it.  If you are into mechas & some loli, I guess you should give this show a try.  But I won't put it as something you should watch during your spare time.  It's probably something to watch when you have lots of free time.

Sky Girls gets a six out of ten.  Although the story is ok, it's not something you will feel complete with.  It's more of a fanservice OVA.
