Information of Anime

It's Valentine Day & girls are preparing chocolates for their love ones.  Three girls want to give their chocolates to Makoto Ito.  However, it would turn into a nightmare for him.

Storyline (CONTAINS SPOILERS)

Below is a summary of the storyline I've seen.  If you haven't seen the series yet & don't want to be spoiled, skip this section.  If you want to know the story & want to see how I viewed it, read on.

This is basically a Valentine Day special.  It has Sekai, Katsura, & Otome Kato trying to give chocolates to Makoto.  They are considered as "obligation" chocolates, but the girls fight with Makoto by telling him to pick only one.  In the end though, he ends up eating all three.  The story ends when Taisuke Sawanaga also confesses to him by giving him chocolates as well.

My Personal Review

School Days Valentine Day is basically an omake using the Valentine Day theme.  Unlike its original storyline, this is pure humour.  However, you will need to watch the TV show to understand the background of the characters.

Animation

Same as the TV show.  The character designs have that plain look.  The girls are pretty much the same.  I sometimes actually had problems telling who was Katsura & Sekai which was pretty weird for me.  Technically, it should be easy to tell them apart, but I actually problems with it for some reason.  As for the fashion, it's plain as well.  Not much style, but still pretty good.  In this special though, the character do have some strange faces such as large eyes with one dot in the pupils.

The backgrounds are okay.  Not a lot of details & it does have it's dull side at times.

The colours are dull.  I don't know what it is, but a lot of anime these days are getting dull colours now.  I'm thinking this is a standard or a trend now.

In terms of the animation movement, it's more on the natural realistic side.  There are some silly ones, but it's rarely found in this show.  The flow is quite smooth with some strange cycles such as walking & running.  It looks choppy at times.  Also, some silly movements can be found as well such as Makoto getting chases by the girls around the world.

Sound

The sound effects are realistic side.  The sounds are projected nicely & the clarity is good.

Same seiyuus from the TV & again they are average here as well.  I don't like Matoko's voice much as it seems to be whiny.  As for the girls, it's not very powerful performances.  They don't provide a lot of punch to their characters even though they do have some life to them.  Sekai is probably the best of the bunch, even though her performance isn't that great.

The music is mainly on the ballad side.  However, they don't really grab my attention very well.  It's kind of dry & dull.  For this special, some cute pop songs are added in to make the special funny.

Story

Basically over the top comedy where Makoto's indecisive behaviour gets him into a different situation which is more humourous.  The special uses the Valentine Day theme well & makes the show very light hearted.  Plus, the characters are much more likeable here since they are on a normal scale pretty much.  The short story is written well & ends it nicely.

Overall Conclusion

School Days Valentine Day is pretty funny to watch & gets you away from all the negative stuff from the original storyline.  But you will need to watch the TV show or have an understanding of the series to enjoy the special at its fullest.

School Days Valentine Day gets an eight out of ten. This is purely fanservice, but makes the special light.  No dark stuff or paranoid characters.  Although it's pure humour, the story is actually written pretty well for this special & wraps up nicely.
