Information of Anime

The Pinky St. OVA is divided into two DVDs that are not related to one another.  Pinky St figurine Saki comes to life & takes her owner to Pinky Town as a "thank you" for playing with her.

Storyline (CONTAINS SPOILERS)

Below is a summary of the storyline I've seen.  This section does contain some spoilers.  If you haven't seen the series yet & don't want to be spoiled, skip this section.  If you want to know the story & want to see how I viewed it, read on.

In one DVD, Saki takes a girl named Mei to Pinky Town.  Mei is viewed as a tomboy as she's always wearing clothes that makes her look like a boy.  When she entered Pinky Town, she tells Saki about her problems on how she always wanted to wear clothes like a girl just like how Pinkys are.  Saki encourages her that she'll be alright in becoming more girly as she need more confidence in herself.  In the end, Mei dresses up as a girl which makes her look cute in her class.

In the other DVD, Saki takes an otaku named Keiichiro to Pinky Town.  Keiichiro causes a ruckus in town as he's excited & views Pinky Town a bit wrongly.  He tells Saki that he had a fight with a friend over a small thing which was his friend buying the Pinky St figurine that he was looking for & does it behind his back.  Saki tells him that he should just apologize & everything will be fine.  The DVD ends with Keiichiro learning that his friend brought the Pinky St figurine for him as a birthday present & tried to surprise him.

My Personal Review

Pinky St. is just a marketing tool to promote the Pinky St brand further.  Aside from getting the figurines that comes with the DVD, it's fanservice.  Since I got some Pinkys, I decided to watch this.

Animation

The animation consists of 2D & 3D animation.

The character designs in 2D are pretty much like a children's cartoon.  In fact, it feels more like a girl's show.  The female characters seem to be similar to one another in their faces.  For Saki, she looks a bit different from human girls which is a good thing.  When we go to Pinky mode, I get a little freaked out.  Of course, all the female Pinkys look the same as it's almost exactly how the real Pinky figurines look like.  However, their faces freak me out.  The facial expressions such as the smiling is a little creepy.  Seeing this, I said to myself that I'm not buying a Pinky figurine again!  But I'm already at the stage that I'm not buying them anymore now.  Anyways, for Pinky Keiichiro, he's not too bad.  Since he's a male, the face structure for him is a little different.  He matches his 2D counterpart well with the long hair & face.  But he's still freaky; not very bad though.

The colours are pretty dull for both worlds.  Pretty strange for an OVA.  The dull colours works better in Pinky Town as gives that toy feel.  The blend of colours don't clash & mix quite well for both worlds.

The backgrounds are okay but not too detailed.  For Pinky Town, it looks fine.  Again, the toy feel to it.

The animation flow is pretty smooth for both sides.  It's got a mixture of realistic & silly stuff for comedy.  Although it's quite smooth, I seem to notice some slight weird movements & slowdowns in the 3D part.  Not very bad, but kind of noticeable.

Sound       

The sound effects are pretty good & clean.  Lots of silly sounds for those funny moments.  Played on cue too.

The seiyuus are pretty average in my opinion.  They role play their characters well, but there's not one that I can attach myself to.

The music contains mostly pop style themes to suit the Pinky theme.  Most of the songs are forgettable though as they don't really stick to your head.  The opening theme is quite catchy & manages to stick to my head a bit.  Only the chorus part though.

Story

Mainly Saki taking her owner to Pinky Town as a gratitude for playing with her.  Makes her owner happy & solves their current problems with her advice.  Both DVDs are like this as the animation is pretty much repeated with different owners & problems.  They are quite simple problems really that can be solved easily.

Overall Conclusion

Pinky St OVA is just fanservice.  If you were to buy this DVD, you should go for the figure really.  The price is worth more on that instead.  But, this OVA should be watched for pleasure as they are short.

Pinky St. OVA gets a 6.5/10.  Nice animation even though the Pinkys are kind of freaky.  Don't expect a major story as the plot is very simple.
