Information of Anime

Hiro Hiyorimi & his sister, Sawawa, lived apart since their parents died in an accident.  He receives a letter from his sister saying that she's working as a in-house maid in a mansion & invites him to live with her together.  When Hiro reaches the mansion, it's beaten up with doors & windows boarded.  No one inside, he takes a stroll in the town & witnesses a girl about to be crushed by falling steel beams.  He saves her by pushing her out of the way & it would cost his life.  Reported as dead, the girl revives Hiro at the hospital with a flame of life.  It turns out the girl is named Hime & is the owner of the mansion that he's staying in.  Although he's alive, he must live as a servant to Hime for eternity.

Storyline (CONTAINS SPOILERS)

Below is a summary of the storyline I've seen.  This section does contain some spoilers.  If you haven't seen the series yet & don't want to be spoiled, skip this section.  If you want to know the story & want to see how I viewed it, read on.

Basically it's about Hiro's misfortunate duty in protecting Hime from danger.  Hime is the princess of monsters that is able to bring the dead back to life with a flame of life.  However, they turn as her servants.  Within her family, one of her brothers is trying to kill her & sends servants from the family to kill her.  Although he gets abused by her, Hiro thinks of Hime as a kind person despite that fact that she's carrying weapons like a chainsaw around the house.  As the story progress, Hime is able to gather more servants to protect her when some of them tried to assassinate her in the beginning.  Later on, we see how the Royality's family battle comes about & some of the siblings appear to be the victor in the war.

The show ends with Hime defeating one of her brothers in the demon world & everyone being happy.  A bonus/extra episode is shown after the ending which has a berserk Flandre rampaging the city.  But she actually does some good deeds from it.  It's discovered that that she had a loose misplaced screw that caused her to haywire.

A DVD bonus episode was added where the cast gets stuck in Hiro's dream & gets attacked in his dream world.

My Personal Review

Kaibutsu Oujo (or Monster Princess) is an average anime show one what seems to be a spoiled girl or princess abusing a boy to her liking.  Whether it's emotional or physical, the boy would still see her as a good girl.  Personally, I picked up this show for the stake of it being a comedy.

Animation

The character designs are pretty plain.  The faces aren't too appealling as they seem to be average.  Big eyes & long/chubby faces.  However, they do match their personalities quite well.  As for the fashion, it's okay.  Not the very best, but somewhat above average.

The colours are pretty dull even though there is a mixture of bright colours on the the charactes mainly.  The blend of colours don't clash & mix quite well.

The backgrounds are okay & detailed.  Most of the areas are dull & gives that mansion a nice old antique feel to it.

The animation flow is pretty smooth.  It's got a mixture of realistic & silly stuff for comedy.  Although it's quite smooth, I seem to notice some slight choppy frames in some areas where the characters are running for a long period of time on the scene.

Sound

The sound effects are pretty good & clean.  Lots of silly sounds for those funny moments.  Played on cue too.

The seiyuus aren't too bad in my opinion.  They role play their characters well.  Hiro is a bit hard to relate.  The seiyuu is a girl playing him & his appearance is a bit more manly than boyish even though he's young.  It may click into me when the show progresses.

The music contains mostly orchestral style themes to suit that horror theme.  They are the occasional rock & pop there & here at times to suit those non-horror moments.  However, most of the songs are forgettable.

Story

Mainly Hiro protecting Hime as she's targeted by her siblings in a battle in being the next ruler in line.  Because his flame last for a few days, he need Hime's powers in order for him to maintain his half-immortal status.  If she dies, he's finished.  The story gets a bit deeper when the Royality family siblings start appearing.

As for characters, Hiro slowly accepts his duty as a servant to Hime.  Also, he also sees her as a gentle & kind person.  However, that's at the start of the show.  Even though he's scared about his immortality status & duties to Hime, he doesn't really develop much at all.  Although he's willing to serve her, he doesn't get any stronger anywhere.  Hime, in the other hand, seems to be more better.  However, we only see her past background instead.  Although it's interesting, there is no signs of developing as well.  Because of the way the story ended openly & without completion, the character development department isn't something you should expect.  But since there was a bonus episode, it managed to keep me happy for a bit.

Overall Conclusion

Kaibutsu Oujo is not something new in the anime world.  The idea of abusing a young boy to a girl's liking isn't new & quite typical in a lot of shows today.  The only difference is how they take the physically abusing comedy to what level.  Although it's got a decent storyline, I personally believe this anime is a passable for something else.

Kaibutsu Oujo gets a 6.5/10.  The idea isn't new & the storyline doesn't end very well in terms of completion.  Character development in this show is weak as none of them seem to be going anywhere.  The humour part will keep this show's interesting high with Hiro's stupidity & death situations.
