Happiness! OVA

Information of Anime

Jun Watarase has always dreamed of being a girl despite being the top beauty in the town.  His wish comes true when he gets hit accidentally by a mixture of magic spells performed by a number of students.  Although he's happy that he turned into a girl, he gets more than he bargained for.

Happiness! OVA is bundled with the Playstation 2 game as a limited edition item.

Storyline (CONTAINS SPOILERS)

Below is a summary of the storyline I've seen.  If you haven't seen the series yet & don't want to be spoiled, skip this section.  If you want to know the story & want to see how I viewed it, read on.

Because of the strong magical effect that not only changes him to a girl but increases his beauty with the boys, Jun is faced with a lot of troubles when every male in the school starts to fall for him like wild beasts.  Yuuma, who's not affected by the spell, Haruhi, & Anri help Jun find a way to change him back to a boy.  With the help of the school nurse, Jun performs a spell that cancels out the charm effect. 

The OVA ends with Yuuma getting hit with the charm spell & develops breasts & loses his manhood.  Now he gets chased by all the males in the school due to his attractive level being high.

My Personal Review

Happiness! OVA is basically a side story that doesn't affect the main storyline.  It's a fanservice episode of Jun, the highly popular fan favourite character from the game even though he's a boy.  Of course, you need to watch the TV show first or be a fan of the series to understand what this OVA is trying to show.

Animation

Same as the TV show.  The character designs are very plain as a lot of the characters look alike.  Most of the girls & the boys look too similar with the round faces & eyes.  There are times that I can't tell a couple of the characters because they look too much alike due to facial structure & hair colour.  Even though Jun changes to a girl, he doesn't change in appearance with the exception of losing his manhood & getting a bigger chest.

The backgrounds are okay.  Not a lot of details, but I think it makes the cities appearance look right.

The colours are dull like the TV show.  Even with the bright & bold parts, it's still dull.  It pretty much fit the description of an old OVA.

In terms of the animation movement, it's a mixture.  Sometimes the movements are realistic & sometimes the movements are not normal.  But they are quite smooth with some choppy frames found.  It's usually when the characters are running.  However, there are times when I felt the animation is a bit slow.  Not too sure why.  I'm thinking it's me that thinks that way.

Sound

The sound effects are really on the silly side.  Some of them are quite cute & funny.  They fit the show well & give it some life.

The seiyuus here are the same ones from the TV show & they are average.  I don't like Haruhi's voice very much & her character isn't thing I like though.  The only one that I thought had the best voice work was Jun even though it was too girly & made me think that he was a girl at the start.  Of course, Jun's voice is done by a female seiyuu. 

Same as the TV show right down to the opening & ending themes.  The music is mainly the pop & ballad side.  None of them are memorable though.  They escape from my head pretty easily.

Story

Mainly about Jun's experience of being a girl.  Whether it's being happy or the troubles of being one.  It's a nice OVA really with a lot of ecchi based humour in it.  I found it to be more enjoyable than the TV show really as it was more fast pace & entertaining in a way.

Although it's not part of the main storyline line, it's pretty much set in between the main story.  So the way the OVA ended is pretty much acceptable even it Yuuma has some bad experiences there.

Overall Conclusion

Happiness! OVA is a nice bonus to watch as a PS2 limited edition item.  Although I'm no fan of Jun, it's quite an entertaining side dish.  Jun fans will probably love it as he's actually a girl in this OVA.  That is if fans don't mind that gender change.

Happiness! OVA gets an eight out of ten.  Although it's not part of the main story, it's quite funny.  The amount of sexual jokes here is higher than the TV show.  In fact, the comedy level here is heavily.  However, you should keep in mind that it's mainly a side story pure of fanservice of Jun.
