Storyline (CONTAINS SPOILERS)

Below is a summary of the storyline I've seen.  If you haven't seen the series yet & don't want to be spoiled, skip this section.  If you want to know the story & want to see how I viewed it, read on.

The OVA starts off with Maya Ōba thinking about how to spend Christmas with Kazuya & trying to be honest with herself.  Afterwards, the story moves to the introduction of Hime & her maid Madoka Kagami.  However, it's revealled later that the two girls switched roles to test Kazuya.  He only notices this when maid Hime falls into the bath & getting her disguised removed.  The second missile that comes to Earth carried two girls named Fritillaria & Ipheion, who were play slaves to a kingdom they were in.  Fritillaria is in a coma state & Ipheion makes an attempt to wake her up to see her smile again.  To do this, she takes the energy source from girls & later turns to the Guardian Hearts as they have a large source.  She takes most of the Guardian Hearts as hostages by inviting them to dinner.  During this process, Maya confesses her love to Kazuya due to a spell in the room their were in.  But Kazuya doesn't give an answer due to his slow brain.  However, Hina in Guardian Hearts form saves the day when part of her energy gets taken by Ipheion which causes her body to break apart.  At this time, Fritillaria wakes & the two girls disappear to their deaths.  Seeing this, Maya gains the courage to ask Kazuya out on Christmas day which is how the OVA ends.

As a side note, episode three showed a cosplay battle between some of the Guardian Hearts members.  This occurs when most of the Guardian Hearts were captured by Ipheion in her mansion.

My Personal Review

Guardian Hearts Powered Up OVA is an harem disaster.  I only decided to watch this as the name rang a bell in my head.  I recalled watching the first OVA in the past, but that was many moons ago.  I totally forgot a lot about series.

Animation

The character designs are simple as the OVA was made in the 2005.  In a way, they are quite one dimensional.  In other ways, flat.  The faces are pretty much generic as they appear the same for both genders.  Just breast size are different.  A lot of attention there as the OVA does have partial nudity.  Koto Tateshina has a different face though when she's in human form & Daisy the greedy cat in her SD form.

The backgrounds are okay.  It lacks details in a lot of scenes like it's mainly quick work.

The colours are mainly on the dull side which was pretty much that way for OVAs during its time.  Because of its dull shading, it makes the characters flat & one dimensional.

In terms of the animation movement, it's mainly silly stuff with comic movements.  As for the flow, it's not the best.  You can heavily see the frames being recycled very easily when the characters are running.  Not very smooth.

Sound

The sound effects are mainly on the silly side with some real stuff.  This gives the show its comedy harem appearance.

The seiyuus here are ok.  They perform their characters well & provide that punch.  However, Hina's voice was a bit annoying as it was high pitched & deep.  Matches her character well, but it can get to you when she does a lot of scenes where she gets angry.

The music is on the pop & rock side.  They fit the show okay, but I don't remember much of them afterwards.

Story

Although it has a storyline with a sub on the side (Maya's Christmas date), it's not well written.  The story goes pretty quick & the ending result seemed be a last minute rushed resort.  I wasn't too pleased with it.  The cosplay battle break wasn't too bad, but it interrupted the story a bit.  But a breather from the suspense isn't a bad idea.

As for character development, none.  The only one that had it would be Maya coming out her shell & being honest to herself by finally letting Kazuya how she feels about him.

Overall Conclusion

Guardian Hearts Powered Up isn't a great OVA to watch.  Although it's a sequel, the OVA gives you a brief introduction & reminder about the main heroines & how they came about with Kazuya.  Even if you are watching the series for the first time, it's something you can make a pass on.

Guardian Hearts Powered Up gets downgraded to a five out of ten.  Although the OVA is quite funny & filled with harem stuff, it doesn't have a good plot & the development is weak.  Plus, the ending was simple & could have been better.
