Information of Anime

Dante is a demon hunter who is half human & half demon.  He runs a company called "Devil May Cry" & offers his services exterminating devils.  However, he always runs in debt.

Devil May Cry is based on the manga, Devil May Cry 3 & Capcom's Devil May Cry series.

Storyline (CONTAINS SPOILERS)

Below is a summary of the storyline I've seen.  If you haven't seen the series yet & don't want to be spoiled, skip this section.  If you want to know the story & want to see how I viewed it, read on.

The show follows the life of Dante's work.  He gets assignments from referrals or walk-ins.  Although he successfully completes his jobs, he always ends up in more debts based on the damages he does.  Plus, his taste for pizza & strawberry sundaes increases his debt more.  From his battles, Dante is being watched by a low-leveled devil from the first episode where Dante meets Patty Rowell in shadows.

The low-leveled devil is watching Dante by setting up his job requests & picking up his scraps.  His purpose is to retrieve the sealed powers of Abigail, the king of demons.  The low-leveled devil manages to get all the parts to open the gate to retrieve Abigail's powers & bring chaos to the human world.  However, Dante defeats the demon easily.  After being reunited with her mother, Patty leaves Dante.

The show ends with Dante & company going to the next job assignment.  Out of the office, Patty comes back to Devil May Cry & cleans up his office once again.

My Personal Review

Devil May Cry is an interesting action show to watch.  Fans of the game may enjoy this as Dante cuts & shots through his jobs with style.  I'm no fan of the series as I never played the games before, but I've heard of the name several times before.

Animation

The character designs are mature looking.  The faces are quite long on the characters & don't have those cute features.  It's more on the realistic side with that anime feel still there.  However, it's not the same as the game designs in terms of how close they look.  The female characters have the same looks though.  The chin, noses, & face structures are strikingly similar.  The differences are mainly the eyes & hairstyles.

The backgrounds are okay.  They are pretty detailed, but not very heavily.  It's pretty dull.

The colours are on the dull side & quite dark.  Sometimes, it was hard to see the characters in the dark settings on my LCD monitor.

In terms of the animation movement, it's ok.  Not very smooth as you can see some of the choppy cycles in some areas.  Although it's got some nice fighting styles, positions, & poses, they don't flow quite nice at times.  It's missing a couple of frames here & there.

Sound

The sound effects are on the realistic side.  The clashing of blade & the sound of flesh being pierced is very clear & the piercing of bullets.

The seiyuus here are ok.  Dante's voice sounds a bit calm.  It somehow doesn't fit his image of what I had of him.  I could be wrong since I don't play the game.

The music is on the heavy rock side.  Fits the show very well, especially the fight scenes.

Story

Mainly Dante's job.  It goes in the same cycle.  Dante in debt, gets job that may reduce the debt, finishes the job well, ends up with more debt.  Although the cycle is a bit tiring to watch, we get to see Dante's human soft side where he decides to follow his human heart such as helping lovers get together though their tough times & his "no killing humans" policy.  Because of this, I don't expect to see any character development from this short show.  However, it created a nice storyline that I didn't expect to happen from the very beginning of the show.

The storyline is hidden very well that I didn't expect it.  The low-leveled devil from the first episode watches & arranges all of Dante's jobs as he plotted something.  The plot was built well & caught me off guard.  All the episodes are linked to each other.  Very nice story writing.  Plus, the ending is fulfilling & complete.

Overall Conclusion

Devil May Cry is nice action horror show for both fans & non-fans to watch.  Don't be fooled that the show lacks a storyline & expect it to be fueling fanservice with nice action scenes.

Devil May Cry gets a 7.5/10.  It's a very exciting show to watch for the fights & carries a hidden storyline.  Nice script writing & fairly stable character development on Dante & Patty even though it's not deep.
