Information of Anime

The end of summer is approaching for Takumi Kaizu's last high school year.  Although he doesn't have any interest in girls, his friend Osamu Funada asks him if he has any girl in his mind.  From that point on, Takumi thinks about this summer.

_summer is based on the ero-game by Soft Garage under the same name.

Storyline (CONTAINS SPOILERS)

Below is a summary of the storyline I've seen.  This section does contain some spoilers.  If you haven't seen the series yet & don't want to be spoiled, skip this section.  If you want to know the story & want to see how I viewed it, read on.

It's nearly the end of summer & it's the final one for Takumi & his friend for their high school life.  He begins to notice things are somewhat change in the people around him.  He doesn't notice this as he thinks that it's weird that they are doing something out of character.

The OVA ends with Takumi & his friends going to the lighthouse that he used to go with Konami Hatano when they were kids to watch the fireworks display.  Watching the fireworks, he begins to recall his past memories with his friends & thinks about how this summer will be most memorable for him as he thinks about what will happen to them in the future.

My Personal Review

_summer is an OVA that doesn't have a good or descent storyline.  It was fanservice to me even though I don't know much about the series.  I'm pretty much watching it for the laughs.

Animation

The character designs has that traditional large eyes & small faces.  Because of the large puff of hair in the front, you would think the characters have huge foreheads.  For some reason, the designs look like polygons with the sharp edges.  They also look a bit one dimensional. 

The backgrounds are pretty nice & detailed.  Pretty dull in the colour, which somewhat gives that summer feeling.

The colours are on the dull bright level.  It doesn't give a lot of toning or shading on the characters & background as well.  At most, it only gives off a bit of shadowing, but it makes the characters look one dimensional.

The animation flow is pretty smooth.  Although there are some signs of choppy movements.  Strangely enough, the silly & funny motions are much smoother than the realistic ones.

Sound       

The sound effects are pretty good & clean.  There are some silly sounds here & there.

The seiyuus aren't too bad in my opinion.  They role play their characters well.  Some of the female characters can be a bit dry for some.

The music contains mostly soft ballads.  I didn't care much for the music as I don't remember what it sounded like.

Story

Your typical summer story where the main character does something for the last summer of his high school years.  It doesn't have a story whatsoever as it's pretty much looking at the characters &their backgrounds.

The comedy elements of the OVA isn't very high.  You got your standard perverted boys running around & some other interesting side characters to keep the interest level up, such as teacher who spends all her money on online shopping to the point where she has no money to feed herself until the next paycheck.  Some of the jokes are quite funny as there are some physical humour involved.

Overall Conclusion

_summer isn't something that will interest a lot of people.  Although I haven't play the game it originated from, I'm somewhat of a fan to ren'ai based games.  But _summer didn't really serve my interest as I wanted it to.  If you have nothing to watch, I would watch this OVA as a side dish & not place it on your must watch list.

_summer gets a 6/10.  It's doesn't have a plot even though to focuses the end of summer.  It's more to please fans of the series in introducing some nice characters put into motion.
