The Chile Trip : Phase 1 : Transition
and Arrival Hi there Fellas....some news Sunday arriived & i woke up early .... I was still worried about becoming a red, blue and yellow blob of southe american road kill, but went for a ride, hey, kicked butt (only racing bike owner in all of Antofagasta I think...) - rode all of 20k out to Coloso to the Shipping Terminal (refer slide marked AereaN) Got a puncture on the way back so stopped in a a deserted taberna con vista al mar (tavern with sea view!!) to do the dirties - got nervous when pump wouldnt inflate the tube (how many chumps have made that mistake) so put in tube #2 with the more manly endowed valve. Got home without any risk of being run over. Funny thing about that ... i could hear trucks rumbling past all thru the night but 7 to 8 am is definitely catch up time for the Chileans - at that hour i own the road .. well sort of That arvo I got a guide - son of aforementioned Geraldo who picked me up at the airport - thats the young fellow in the pic (refer guides 23jun2001) ... a man of few english words but after intense handwaving and gesture ... a fan of metalica and celine dion (eclectic little fellow isnt he) We then went La Portada - thats the arch sitting in the middle of the sea (waz 23jun2001)and me of course We then went to a bush car race just off the main road - this place is the mecca of atacama petrol heads - note the lack of schrubery (race 23jun2001) ... you must be captivated by my visual feast at this stage !! We then visited the 'golf course' - should have bought some clubs for this beauty - wooden clubs - admit it guys - dont you wish you were here with me - Richard , Al - New York and San Fransisco has nothin on this place ... (refer golfers 23jun2001) We then went to town and visited the local museum - closed but i took a picture of a neat little train sculpture (refer sculp 23jun2001) Yep no point in half measures - you folks are getting the tourismo full monty here - la grande turistico - hang in there guys ill have you abla ing in espanol pronto I then treated my guide to his ultimate fantasy - a big mac and the recently opened golden arches ... hang, does life get any better than this i wonder... OK, better keep it short plus time to vamos
