Interview with Jill McEntee /Funerus.

1. Hails, How are things?
Hi. Things are going good. We are talking about doing a 10 day US tour on the east coast with Mortician, Incantation and The Chasm in January. Sounds like it will be good shows!

2. Please, introduce us in the world of Funerus. How the band was formed, discography...
Funerus was formed in the early 90's by Brad Heiple guitar/vocals and Jason Foust drums. They never were a complete band until I joined up with them in 1993 on bass. I had known them for a while and had seen them practice once, and i thought what they were doing sounded really heavy. They needed a bass player, and i had experience playing guitar, so they asked me to join the band. So from there Funerus was an actual band. We recorded a demo which is simply called Funerus demo 1994 and has 4 songs on it. In 1994 we started playing some shows and the demo started to circulate in the underground metal scene. Things started to look good for us, but Brad suddenly decided to leave the band. Jason and I tried to keep things going with a couple other guitarists, but things didn't work out. Eventually Jaosn and I lost contact and he moved far away from me. The band was dormant until 1998 I put together an entire new line up for one show. The show was good, but something just wasn't right about it to me. I decided to put Funerus to rest for good. That is until John and Kyle encouraged me to reform the band with them as members in late 2001. We got ahold of original member Brad to see if he wanted to be a part of the band again and he said yes. Since then everything has been incredible. We have recorded our debut cd "Festering Earth" out on Ibex Moon Records.

3. How do you see Funerus during the early 90s and today?
Things are alot different from then to now. Back then it was a different line up. Brad, Jason and I were pretty much just kids, well I was the oldest of the 3 of us. If I remember correctly, the two of them were still in high school when I joined up with them. We were very inexperienced and really didn't know alot. The shows that we starting playing with this line up were the first shows any of us had ever played. Today things are much different. I have grown up and I am a much smarter/wiser person and musician. I have more than many shows under my belt and even a full U.S. tour. As far as the line up today, things cannot be any better. John, Kyle and I are a family whose bonds are unbreakable and we work extremely well together.

4. You've recently released new album, "Festering Earth", are you still satisfied with the final result (production and mix)?
We are satisfied with the way the album came out. I think the production and sound came out fine. John did the production work on our cd, and he has alot of experience being in the studio, he has learned alot from recording the Incantation cd's and from their engineer Bill Korecky, and he knew exactly the sound we were looking for. I haven't changed my mind, we are all still happy with it.

5. How "Festering Earth" is being received worldwide? Are you having a good response?
It seems we are getting really good responses to Festering Earth. Of course not all the reviews are going to be great, but for the most part they have been good. Alot of reviews I've read or just emails I've recieved, people are saying that the band is refreshing in an old school way, in that alot of bands today are all about "how fast can we be" and "how many blast beats can we fit in this measure". I think those types of bands lose some feeling in the music and in my opinion the metal fans might feel that too, any maybe a band like Funerus gives back some feeling and interest.

6. "Festering Earth" line-up features you (Jill McEntee), John McEntee, Brad Heiple and Kyle Severn... How this line-up influenced Funerus in the album? How was your relationship in studio?
I feel this line up has alot to do with how the album came out. We all worked very hard. From making the old demo songs sound totally killer, to collaborating on writing the new songs, it was a group effort. As far as the studio, it wasn't bad at all. There were really no stresses at all. Everything was smooth. Of course there is always things that you need to tweek and shit, but there were no major problems.

7. What's the lyrical concept around "Festering Earth"?
There is no one concept to Festering Earth. We are not a band that writes about one certain thing. Funerus is not a gore band, we are not a satanic band, or a political band, etc, so we have many things we write about. Our writing style may be very simplistic and some people may take it as being somewhat juvenile, but I like it and I think it fits well with what we do. Some of the topcs we have covered on the album are the earth rotting away, disease, and someones right to die.

8. What sort of good and bad experiences have you had during your recent Funerus/Incantation tour?
On our Festering Earth North American tour there was definitely ups and downs. The tour was on the west coast in the dead of summer. Our van was pulling a trailor full of equipment and it would overheat. We missed a few shows because we had to take time off and get it fixed. But of course there were great things, like playing the shows in Mexico, that always rules! The crowds in Mexico always go sick and they really appreciate you being there to play for them. There were alot of good shows in the US too. We had alot of fun with the Disgorge(US) guys, they were good tourmates and a great band!

9. "Festering Earth" includes the cover art done by Chris Moyen, who has done works for Incantation too... So, do you think that he capture the essence of the album?
Yes we all really like the cover art by Chris Moyen. We thought it fit well with the album. To make it clear, there were several pieces of art that we looked at from Chris, and when we saw that, we all liked that one for the album, we knew it fit. It wasn't like Chris drew that one piece for our album. So it was more or less like it was meant to be, it all fell together.

10. Funerus was created during the 90s.... How do you see the actual metal scene as compared with the 90s? How do you see the future of metal?
I think things were great for metal in the early 90's. So many influential bands were around at the time. Things have changed alot, but you have alot of those bands coming back around now, reforming and putting out albums, which is a good thing. One thing we have now that wasn't around back then is the nu metal bands that are plauging the metal scene. It's fucked because alot of kids think that those bands are the heaviest music out there. But there are many old and newer bands out now that I think are killer and keeping the spirit of metal alive! As for the old days, I do have to say though, I feel very fortunate to have grown up when I did, as I was part of the 80's metal scene. There is just something special and vintage to me about those days.

11. Now, some personal questions... How do you spend your spare time? Hobbies, interests?
I work full time as a registered nurse. I do alot of band stuff, such as mail, interviews, etc and help John do stuff with the label. John has a computer business on the side when he is not on tour, he fixes computers and does websites. John and I have 2 very large dogs (akitas) and they are our family so they take up a good amount of our time at home.

12. What book are you reading now? Do you read much? What books impress you most of all?
Sadly I don't get much time to read books. It seems like there aren't enough hours in the day. I do read all the zines that come in the mail and I'm lucky that I have the time for that.

14. Bush or Kerry? Why?
Sorry, I never talk politics.

13. If you could choise a historical fact to be present, which would it be and why?
Well I've given alot of thought to this question, and I just can't come up with anything. There isn't any time period in the past that I would rather be in. Or there isn't any historical events that I would've wanted to live through in the past, I am happy with living in the present and growing up when I did even though there are alot of things that suck about the world today!

15. Plans to the Funerus future?
Well we have some things written, in the same Funerus style. I'm not sure when we will record because Funerus' schedule revolves around Incantation's schedule, and I know they will be busy because of their new album recently being released. But we will play as many shows as possible in the meantime.

16. Thanks for answer this interview, Jill... Your final bullets..
Thanks for the interview. For more info on the band, MP3's, photos, and more check out our website at www.funerus.com. We hope to come and play our sewage death metal in South America sometime soon!
