Interview with Lino Reca / The Dying Light.
1. Hails, Lino!!! In 2001, you and Eddie Ortiz, have formed a new project, called The Dying Light. Can you tell us how did everything start and what's the origin of the band name?
Hails Clay! Yes, THE DYING LIGHT light was born out of a disgust for what was being considered METAL these days, Eddie and Myself shared a 3 bedroom apartment and a healthy appetite for 80's metal in general, be it thrash, black, speed, death... We were "fed up" with our previous band situations and wanted something new and wanted to re-invent ourselves thru a new band and we started writing music immediately.. it was easy, drink a few beers, smoke some quality stuff and listen to all our favorite LP's on the 'ol vinyl player... slaughter from Canada, sacrifice and of corpse possessed.. which led to the first tune written by your's truly.. namely WARSTRIKE! Eddie then summoned up our "hit" for the deathbangers.. MEGALOMANIA! Our name was born out of our collective interest in Physics/Quantum mechanics... Joe Capizzi coined the name if i remember correctly at the house one night talking about something Steven Hawking's/Brian Greene related...
2. Is there any particular message the band is trying to get across?
Yes. Self Preservation thru Intellect and Brute force.
3. How would you describe the music? Which are your main influences?
Our music is what we like to call "street metal"... we use this term because our music has lots of different influence from all the genres of metal and its filthy and raw the way we like it. Not overproduced. We also could care less about fashion in metal and street clothes is what we wear, no strange Halloween attire.. we leave that to the pretenders to the throne and children more concerned about how they look in pictures instead of what comes out of the amps... All the great bands from the 80's... stuff like Possessed, Venom, Razor, Mercyful Fate, Slaughter, Slayer, Kreator, Malmsteen, Carnivore, King Diamond, Celtic Frost, Bathory, Sarcofago, [ancient] Sepultura, Whiplash, Discharge, Hellhammer, Coroner, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden.. that kind of thing.. also ancient Morbid Angel... you get the drift...
| 4. How are the divulgation and reception of your first full length, "Survival Guide to the Apocalypse"? What has been the response so far?
People in the music media had no idea that we existed till the LP/CD hit. We recorded a demo, we spread that out a little and got some great response in the underground and We kind of kept low-key and went down to record the LP with our own money and things started happening... now things are really picking up and who knows what the future holds.... The response has been nothing short of incredible considering we have no adverts, no website [at the time], no tours. We just play out allot around the north east part of the country and now the reviews are coming thru a little at a time and the overseas folks are writing us more and more.. we are glad that the word of mouth in the underground is strong and that helped us alot... |

5. Eric Rutan is responsible for the production of the album. Are you satisfied with the result?
Yes. The bass guitar could have been louder, but now we know what to do next time. Eric Rutan and Sean Ohtani [engineer] are professional and great people to work with. They are 10000000 % percent dedicated to metal and present a great working atmosphere.
6. Can you inform us about the lyrics/topics of your album? Are it describing The Dying Light view of the Apokalipse? What led you to choose "Survival Guide to the Apocalypse" as the title for the new album?
We touch on allot of subjects within the lyrical aspect of the band. Its like a audio Diary and presents our interests in the occult, science, the vagina, inner strength, a reflection of our surroundings, s&m, the daily death of the old self and the re-birth of the new progressed better being. In order to create, you must destroy. Yes. The apocalypse is a chaotic destruction/rebirth of ourselves and also a reflection of "sign of the times". Because it was/is appropriate for our self being rebirth and the re invention of our musical lust of all things metal!
7. How long did it take to conceive the album? Who does most of the writing?
A years writing time as far as the music/lyrics is concerned. We all write music for the band. It is a collection of 4 individuals that play string instruments and write and create/compose music on our own time and then present and teach each other the music via jam's at the rehearsal room with our drummer.... and speaking of which, he [Brandon Thomas] also adds/writes his own vision of patterns instead of 'taking orders' as most drummers usually fall into that category.. in essence we all are equal in contribution to the writing process. A rarity in metal music.
8. Some personal questions... After the WTC explosion in septemper 11, how is the situation of daily life in NY?
Paranoia, unsettled feelings and deep rooted hatred best describe it. I prefer to ignore the mass media frenzy and just live life as if every day is the last, productive and progressive... no fear.. that's for feeble fools that live as slaves to the television and the unknown future.
9. What three books and movies would you consider essential?
These are some books and films we collectively enjoy: Books: "A Beginners Guide to Constructing the Universe, the Mathematical Archetypes of Nature, Art and Science, A Voyage from 1-10" by Michael S Schneider, "Magick without Tears" Aleister Crowley, "The Elegant Universe" Brian Greene. Films: "Blue Velvet" .. Lynch, "Aapocalypse Now Redux" ..Coppola, "Taxi Driver" ...Scorsese
10. What made you use your own paintings for the album cover? Where come from the concept for this paintings?
I used the paintings created specifically for LP design since a] i have the "personal" insight/visions on lyrics/concepts and b] because the rest of group really liked the work! its not photo shop bullshit or the cheesy ass gore with stupid compostions. I hate tasteless unoriginal "art" crap flooding the market these days... only blood, paint and charcoal are REAL!!!! Twisted/disturbed/misanthropic thoughts and inspiration from the female flesh... and all its delicious juices...
11. Are you into art in general? What are your favorite styles and painters?
Yes. That is what I do for a living and also do many personal gallery shows here in NYC. I am a graduate from the top art high school and university here in nyc. I prefer linear drawings from life, surreal,Dada, expressionist, and dark American illustration's from the late 50s. some of my favorite artists: Egon Schiele, Matisse, Jack Potter, Robert Weaver, Dali, Nick Blinko...
12. Besides paintings, how do you spend your spare time? Hobbies, interests?
I spend most of my time drawing from life, listening to music, fucking my Latina porno queen, going to gallery's, learning to cook different foods, bettering thy self, staying fit and trying to learn as much as possible... |
