Interview with Eate /Adhur.
1. Hails, Eate !!! How are things in Basque revolution?
Its not going well.
2. First tell us the history of Adhur. ( How
and when it was formed, lineups, etc.)
ADHUR was founded by me ( Eate) in the summer of 95. Later Egoitz
joined the band and so the band was established as follows: Eate: voice,
guitars, percussion, Egoitz: bass, key boards. In March WAR IS IMMINENT
PROD. released our debut split CD , including other two Basque bands, AIUMEEN
BASOA and ILBELTZ. The title is TRIARCHY OF VASCONIA/ILUNTASUNAREN ITZULERA
and we recorded 3 songs for this split which are the following: +SUA
(FIRE), +AKELARREKO BATZARRA( The gathering of the Akelarre), +ILUNO (
Darkness). We are only two members in ADHUR, but some musicians collaborated in
the three songs: -Mezzo-soprano: Ainhoa Soraluze, -Baritone: Josu Lopez
S, -Flute: Haritz Solupe, -Violin: Leire Elizes, -Drums: Barrene, They
are friends, and despite the drummer, who is not going to play more with
us, they will continue in future releases. Now Xabi from the Death metal
band ETERNAL REBIRTH is playing with us.
3. About the name Adhur, what does it mean and
why was it chosen as the name of your band?
Adhur is a Basque word meaning magic strength, and it is related to
the moon and personified by the goddess Mari., I chose the name because
it defines my necessity to express the real meaning of my being and my
relationship to the ancient Basque world through music.
4. Which are your main influences? And what
are the musicians that inspired you the most?
Well, I listen to many different kinds of music and its difficult
to name my main influences. I think that every music you like and you listen
to, influences you in a certen way. I listen from extreme metal bands,
EMPEROR, BURZUM, BAL-SAGOTH, CYNIC, OPETH, ABIGOR, among other, to Ambient/folk artists such as ARCANA, Benito Lertxundi, OTYG, DEAD CAN DANCE, etc. It can be a never ending list.
5. How can you describe your style?
Its no easy to describe what you create because its a very important part of your own feelings, and obviously you cant describe your feelings
with words, but If I had to, Id say its some kind of medieval/atmospheric Basque Pagan Metal.
6. How are the divulgation and reception of your
split-CD "Triarchy of Vasconia"?
Some promotion has been done, but although the album was released in
March no promo copy has been released yet. Yes, I know that it sound incredible,
illogic, but thats the fact. I am moving some promo CD-ROM copies
and the reception is very positive. By the way, if everyone involved in
zines/radios/etc is interested in listening to our music, dont
hesitate to get in touch with us by e-mail ( [email protected]).
7. Are you satisfied with the final result of
"Triarchy of Vasconia" ?
Actually Im not. The CD sounds correct and I think that it doesnt
give us the chance to show our real potential. Apart from that, the new
songs are much better, more aggressive and atmospheric/epic. But dont
misunderstood me, I am very proud of the three songs included in the TRIARCHY
OF VASCONIA CD. They are good songs, but what can I say being the main
composer ? |

8. What's the lyrical concept around this album?
Concerning to ADHUR, The three songs recorded for this split CD belong
to the Basque mythology and world view, and each of them is closely related
to this fact. "Sua" (fire) means creation, the beginning, and at the same
time it is the first song. The following, "Akelarreko batzarra" (the gathering
of the akelarre), deals with the return of the legitimate owners of the
earth, the real gods, and the mention of the akelarre represents the germination
of the seed, for the akelarres are a fecundity rituals of the goddess Mari,
the most important one in the Basque mythology. The third song, called
"Iluno" (Darkness), an ancient word found in a prehistoric Basque tomb
and written in ancient Basque, deals with the death of this person and
his conversation with the goddess Mari, who is embodied by the moon. Thus
the cycle finishes with the birth, the fertility, and the death, the natural
cycle of life. And in general, each band gives its particular view
about the Basque roots and mythology, both musicaly and lyrically.
9. What is your source of inspiration when you create your music, and lyrics?
I get inspiration from the Basque culture and from nature. Yes, I know that it sounds typical, but its true.
10. How are your shows ? And your performance
on stage?
Unfortunately, we cant play live due to the line up. The musicians
involved in the recording have jobs or they are very busy with their own
careers. In fact, Ainhoa ( Mezzo-soprano) from example, lives in Milan
and she comes twice a year to the Basque Country, and the same happens
to Josu (Baritone), who travels frecuently due to his several projects.
Maybe in the future, who knows?
11. How do you view the metal scene in Basque
Country these days? Are there any Basque bands that you think are pretty
good?
I think that things are much better than when we started back in 95.
Nowadays, we can talk about a Basque scene, something that 3 or 4 years
ago wasnt possible. There are a pretty good bands working around and I
truly think that they all have their own style. Furthermore, I believe
that the Basque Scene has his particular sound. I dont now how to explain
it, but when you listen to the bands you can appreciate some different
ingredients who are mixed together and create a special feeling.
Some of the most relevant bands are: ILBELTZ, NUMEN, AIUMEEN BASOA,
ETERNAL REBIRTH, SUFERING DOWN, ELFFOR , DEMONLORD and OMINOUS.
12. Is there a philosophy behind the music you
play ?
Of course there is. I created ADHUR in order to keep the Basque pagan
believes alive. Basque is one the few pre-Indo-European languages
in Europe, and actually it is the only one in the West of Europe. Our culture
and language comes from prehistoric days to nowadays and its still alive.
Our goal is to keep the flame alive and this is why the CD is entitled
ILUNTSUNAREN ITZULERA ( THE RETURN OF DARKNESS) , which means the
return of the old pagan belief, darkness for Christians.
13. Are you anti- or pro- European Unification
? Don't you think that's prejudicial to the national culture ?
I think that the European Union prejudices the national culture because
its creating the Europe of states, and not the Europe of people. In Europe
there are many nations and people that have not their own state,
so this only contributes to the globalisation and against minority cultures.
14.I'll tell you words/names and you'll
give me your thoughts about it... ok?
paganism - Quite difficult to explain
my feelings towards that.
Friedriech Nietzsche - One of the best
philosophers of ever.
Cortes Generales - Spanish parliament
and senate dont represent Basques.
Miguel Cervantes di Saavedra - A great
Spanish writer. His Don Quijote is one of the best novels in the Spanish
literature.
Reino de España - A place and I
don`t belong to.
Sancho I -
terrorism - wrong way to fight for
your believes.
actual world politic, economic and social situation
- Politic sucks!
15. Could you tell us one person of the past
whom you personally respect, and why?
Well, I can mention you many people, but I choose the Basque people
who fought against Carlo Magno in Orreaga in 778 . Carlo Magno burnt Iruñea
and killed the majority of the people, but when he as his army were returning
home the Basque attacked and won the fight .
16. What do you look for in music? Is it purely
musical to you, or do you care about ideology?
It depends. Obviously I look for good music that makes me feel something.
Ideology is also important, but sometimes ideology stands in a second
level. I mean, BURZUM is one of my favourite bands, but I dont agree with
many of its ideas.
17. How do you spend your spare time? Hobbies,
interests?
Music is my life, so I spend my time making a zine called VAMPIRIA
Zine (Not the Italian one). It is written in Spanish and we are going to
release a new issue soon, and it will include a free comp. Cd featuring
national and foreign bands such are FALL of the LEAFE, NUMEN, VAMPIRIA,
CENTINEX. Some interviewed bands are VADER, BAL-SAGOTH, FALL OF THE LEAFE,
FERMENTO, among other. Bands and labels, please get in touch!

18. Adhur members are into ETA or Herri Batasuna, the political party? How do you view this moviments?
As I told you before, politics sucks, so I dont want to talk about
it. The only thing I can say is that we are not involved in Herri Batasuna
or ETA, and that Im Pro independence but I dont support ETA methods.
19. Do you have any fave bands at the moment? Any
albums that you are constantly listening to?
The last ARCANA album, the French Celts BRAAN BAAR, PRIMORDIAL and
RAKOTH are some of the bands that are constantly in my stereo. They all
are really good bands.
20. What are the future plans ? Are you recording
anything or planning to record?
I am now working in new songs. I have already written 7 and well start
rehearsing soon. The new songs are more aggressive but also very medieval/atmospheric
oriented. Well, I think that is the natural evolution. The deal from WAR
IS IMMINENT was for one CD so, we have no plans to enter to studio
yet. Our goal now is to rehears and improve as musicians.
21. What three books and movies would you consider
essential?
Difficult question, there are so many...OK. Here you have some:
Movies: CONAN THE BARBARIAN, BLADE RUNNER and TORRENTE EL BRAZO TONTO
DE LA LEY.
Books: LORD OF THE RINGS, LA TIERRA MADRE (Ortiz-oses) and LA
NAVARRA MARITIMA (Tomas Urzainki /Jimeno Jurio)
22. What merchandise do you have available ?
We have not merchandise available yet. Maybe well print some shirts
but nothing is for sure yet.
23. Thanks for this interview .... Your final
bullets...
Thank you very much for giving us the chance to be interviewed in your
web zine, and if someone is interested in our music, dont hesitate and
please get in touch.
