BACKGROUND

Indonesia is the country with the largest muslim population in the world and over the 60 millions of them are women. As is the case with other developping countries, large proportions of them are poorly educated and little understanding about Islam. Added to this bad condition is the onslaught carried out by secular feminist movements whose manoeuvers are getting more obvious intense with the revival of communist women organization. in December 1998.The re-birth of this communist women organization was backed up by a secular feminist coalition that receives financial support from abroad. In the past, the organization was widely known for its affiliation to PKI (Indonesian Communist Patry),that was the mastermind of the doomed communists' coup attempt against Soekarno regime on 30 September 1965 in which seven army generals were brutally killed.
This development alone should have raised the alarm and increased Muslims' awareness of the corruption spread by the movements which, therefore, should not be left unchallenged. This awareness, thus ,must be one  that entails real actions in the form of organized movements based on the spirit of enjoining the goods and forbidding the evils. It was an answer to this call that on 4 April 1999,in a conference held in Istiqlal Grand Mosque, some muslim women organizations and NGOs agreed to set up an umbrella organization called Gema Khadijah. The organization refers to Al-Quran and As-sunah  for the principal guidance in their programs. It envisions a new Indonesia and world morality as the objective in its strugle for women's rights whose recognition is a pre-requisite in establishing  global justice and peace for every individual, and a world governed by Islamic Values.
Having entered the so-called reform period has not yet made Indonesia better but to face more problems whose solutions require the involvement from all components of its society. Thus,Muslim women are strongly urged to actively participate and make contribution to the nation.
Gema Khadijah has designed a moral framework for Muslim women who have committed themselves tp participate in its activities whose goal are establishing the new Indonesia. In this framework,Gema Khadijah believes that all individuals living in this planet share a common desire to set up a more humane wolrd order. It is hoped taht in the future,Gema Khadijah will be able to form a Muslim ummah,as well as to be element within the Muslim ummah as an element of power ,as well as to be amongst those in front line in counter attacking the feminist forces. In addition, the organization is projected to be one of those that will act as adriving force, facilitator and inspirer for other nationwide and woldwide muslim women movements that strive for humanity.
We ask Alah the Al-Migthy to grant us strength and power in our efforts to establish His Words on earth.
