Day by day, the conflicts colored with ethnic, religion, and race group problems in the Northern Halmahera expanded towards the other parts of the island. This time the worse happened in East Gane District, in Southern Halmahera. The conflict which started at 27 January 2000 has taken dead and injured victims. As the result of communication and transportation breakdown to Ternate, the incident has just been clearly known at the beginning of this month. According to the Justice Post source at the incident location, the situation in villages around the East Gane District has heated up since the conflicts in Tobelo and several places in Northern and Central parts of Halmahera. The causes of the conflicts were :
Starting from these three causes, the eye witnesses explained that at the start of the incident, Wosi Village, which is mostly populated by Muslims, majority of Makian ethic, was preparing for a celebration to offer thanks to the Almighty for people who were going for hajj. It was the 27 January 2000. From 06.00 East Indonesian Time, some Christians attacked from the neighboring villages, which was a compound of three villages (Lalubi to Fida). They attacked with full armaments while the Muslims were completely unprepared. The attack which took place until 11.00 East Indonesian Time at noon took 13 Muslims dead as Shuhadas and more than ten people were injured. The number of victims fell from the Christians side was unknown. The incident started in November 1999 in Durian Village by people from neighboring villages. It then spreaded to Boso Village and at last the Christians managed to burn the Fulai Village which was mostly populated by Muslims. The conflicts were settled down by the security forces, but it reappeared at the beginning of February. Several villages in Southern parts of West Gane District got involved in the conflicts. The villages were previously populated by Muslims and Christians. It was reported that on 2 February 2000, people were attacking each other, as an influence from the East areas (East Gane District), in Pasipalele, Jibubu, Yamli, Sekli, Yome. Since the incident in the North took place, the situation was more tensed. The Christians provoked the Muslims. As was told by the Justice Post sources, the Christians have previously prepared emergency houses in the field, called "befak". This has made the Muslims situation worse. The victims from the attacks were reported as 5 Muslims, whereas from the Christians side, the number of victims was unknown. All Christians at the southern part of West Gane have moved to Ranga-ranga (Christian area)

Ranga-ranga (Christian area) was attacked by Muslims, this chain of conflicts was caused by the Muslims anger, knowing that the attack to Wosi was done by Christians. While doing the Prayer for people going for hajj, they did not expect the attack. As the result, people gathered and attacked Ranga-ranga. Many victims fell from the Ranga-ranga side.
Whereas in Jailolo, around 10.00 – 14.00 East Indonesian Time, the jihad troop did a combing attack (a term used by the jihad troop) and they managed to capture 6 people from Boso Village to Akelamo Kao, then to Bayamahay. The hostages were interviewed by one of the Justice Post personnel. "We did not run because we knew that our Muslim brothers meant no harm to us", said one of the hostages when asked why he did not run away, he continued "We were told to run away by our priest, seeing that others have ran away. But we refused". Those hostages are kept in a safe and healthy condition until today, and they are fed. One of those 6 hostages came from Akelaha Village and 4 came from Tuguraci.

The desire of Malifut Muslims, who were sent away from their hometown since November 1999, was more or less satisfied. On 6 February 2000, they managed to step on the land of Malifut, although they had to pay a tremendous price for this, for 8 (eight) people died, tens injured and only several hours after that the Christian troop from the North came back to run an attack that the Muslims had to withdraw to the Malifut border.
According to the Justice Post source, who were at the front-end, the jihad troop, who has moved from early morning, has took control of the Tahane Bridge and the Police Station in Malifut Sector (Central Malifut) until 6 in the evening. There was a painful event, though, since during the attempt to take Malifut back, the soldier blockaded the road, that no food supply could reach Malifut, whereas most of the jihad troop had been on the front for two days without food.
From the available data, it was confirmed that out of the eight victims, only 5 were identified. They came from Sabale, Moti, Tobelo, Tidore (a Javanese) and Matsa, named Usman.
