"The sheet had been wound only twice around the drum in the light morning airs. Now in heavy winds the sail carried extra tons of wind…. I began to slaken the sheet. A fresh gust hit...a bight of line whipped of and ran out unchecked. I dropped the line and stepped back clear as the sail flogged riotously...I lifted my hands. The skin had flayed…"

Michael and Tere acquire a novice crew, Miki, a beautiful young Japanese girl who is more interested in escaping an arranged marriage than in enjoying life aboard SEA QUEST., their 47-foot steel sailboat. But despite Miki's bouts of seasickness and her fears during storms, she becomes a great companion and participant in their numerous adventures.

Their route takes them first to japan's Southern Archipelago, then to Hong Kong, and Macau. The Philippines brought new adventures as well as some sailing problems, including a short-lived ground. Soon they were in Micronesia, discovering little known islands and cultures, which Tere, a keen observer, was intent in experiencing.

"I signaled Miki to drop the mooring. A school of frightened fish broke the surface; the strong current dragged at SEA QUEST. The seconds dragged slowly as anxiously I circled the boat. Then two black blobs  appeared against the glare. Under my breath I swore I'll never let Michael out of my sight again!"
