herself. This mountain is a lure to hikers and mountain climbers alike. To reach the peak is not dangerous, just arduous and cold., probably not something that we would like to do. But the mountain was more than a focus for sportsmen. To the old tribal people here it wears a godlike visage and is held in sacred awe.

We moored the boat at Sutera harbour, a new Marina amid reat luxury. The marina is part of a major  hotel and sports club complex on a vast stretch of reclaimed land which will  also include spacious homes on a canal. Included in our dock fee were such extras as use of three outdoor pools and a gymnasium. A  shuttle bus carried us into town and back for groceries.

Mr. Loh and a friend of his took us to the Kinabalu National Park where in the cool mountain air we walked, admiring strange plant life all around us. Mosses grew into giants and ferns didn't resemble anything I had seen before. The heavy scent of voluptuous blossom combined with the rich smells of composting leaf mold.

At Poring Hot Springs we hiked up a long valley to a pretty waterfall through groves of giant bamboo, as big around as some young girls. And to think that bamboo is a grass!

A day out hiking with Mr. Loh and his friend, Martina, took us to Kinabalu National Park and Poring  Hot Springs.
