Hiking Information

We will walk on average 7 hours each day.  We will get up early enough to have breakfast, and re-pack our equipment, ready to leave camp by 7am.  We will have a break mid morning, at lunchtime and another break in the afternoon.  Most of us will then arrive in camp around 4:30 – 5pm, depending on distance, weather and ability.

Luggage/Equipment

When on the Inca Trail porters will carry all the luggage/tents/food/water and all the equipment that is required for camping.  They will go ahead after lunch so that they can start setting up tents.

Camping

The campsites where we will be staying are not the kind of campsites you come across in continental Europe and the UK.  This part of Peru is remote and rugged, which makes for an exciting trip, but the down side is the distinct lack of creature comforts – there won’t be any hotels or Travel Lodges!

Tents

>Our group will sleep in 2-man tents which will be provided.

Toilet and washing facilities

We have been warned these will be very basic!  We will be rough camping along the route, sometimes with the opportunity to wash in streams and rivers.  Water will be limited, and what we do have will be primarily for drinking.  It is recommended that we take both wet wipes and Carex (i.e. anti-bacterial hand wash which does not require water) for washing.

When in camp we will arrange our own toilet facilities.  They will definitely not be sophisticated i.e. a hole dug in the ground, with a tent/wind breaker for privacy.  During the day it is just a case of finding a quiet spot.

Water

We will be collecting water from springs and streams along the route and sterilising it so that we can drink it.
