The village of Barnetby le
Wold, to give it it's full name, is situated on the edge of the
Lincolnshire Wolds about half way in between Scunthorpe, to the west, and
Grimsby to the east. It is well situated lying at junction 5 of the M180
and on the main rail line from Cleethorpes to Doncaster or Lincoln. The
line appeals to many train spotters due to the fact that it still has a
large number of semaphore signals.
Barnetby is home to about
1500 people and several small enterprises including, The Station
Hotel,
The Railway Inn, Baig's Newsagents, Dillons Store, a post office, hair
salon and a
doctors clinic. There are a few options for visitors wishing to stay in the
village, including Reginald House, the Station Hotel and Holcombe
House.
The old church (St.
Mary's) situated on
the hill above the village is said to have lost its steeple when Oliver
Cromwell and his men shot it off !! Since then a new church has been built
(St. Barnabas'), on Victoria Road in the village, and very recently a new church hall has been added. The Methodist Church is located on West Street.
Barnetby Silver Band began
over 120 years ago in the village and now has its own band room
conveniently located on Railway Street near the two pubs.
