In the election of 1800, a tie between Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr, both Democratic-Republicans, arose. Since Jefferson and Burr tied for first place in the presidency election, the election was thrown to the House of Representatives. The members of the House balloted as states to determine which, of Jefferson or Burr, would become President. There were sixteen states, and an absolute majorityin this case, ninewas required for victory. Thomas Jefferson received a total of 10 states support, while Aaron Burr only received four (two states showed no result).
