What is your High School Stereotype? What is your stereotype? I was asked this question by a friend of mine a week after the first day of school. What is a stereotype anyway? Well according to the dictionary, a stereotype is a conventional, formulaic, and oversimplified conception, opinion, or in other words an image. Of course when my friend asked me this question he meant, what was my high school stereotype. I looked at him and it was obvious to me what stereotype he was in high school. He wore a neat striped shirt and, in an effort to be trendy, untucked it over a large pair of buckled jeans with a chain hanging from a pocket. His hair was slicked back with pomade and he had an ear piercing or two. But all his efforts were in vain. He was sporting a pair of square rimmed thick glasses and carrying a bunch of books from the library. This guy was a geek. I imagined him to be a fan of Star Wars or any TV show that included space invaders or battleships. There are many kinds of stereotypes. There's the BLONDE or CHEERLEADER, who is sickeningly happy and popular. Has good looks, grades, family, life...ugh. Next is the GEEK. He is the super-smart kid who was probably laughed at by the popular kids. He is so insecure that he's trapped in his own fantasy world with Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. Then there is the GOODY-TWO-SHOES. She is the one who brightens up your day with lots of sunshine and pure innocent goodness. Gushing lots of naive optimism that will be eventally crushed in college... mwahahaha! Ahem... Then there's the GOTH. He likes to wear black, thinks about death and maybe satan. Of course he is bitter and doesn't care if the world is coming to an end..hehe I like. Then there is the homecoming king, the JOCK. He is so handsome, plays sports, is so strong, and so Stupid! He likes to bully people when he doesn't get his way. Next is the OUTSIDER. She is also bitter, callous and constantly whines about the utter stupidity and monotonous living drones around her. She is the one who sarcastically spouts remarks to you about the stupid conventions in our society...hehe I like too... And then last but not the least there is the SLUT. She is also beautiful but not as popular. She likes to have a trail of admirers following her and she likes the attention... Of course this may be caused by having an overly small ego and insecurity... yech. Hmm.. So what is my stereotype? I don't know. Once I was a geek, then a cheerleader, then the goth or the outsider... whichever I was it doesn't matter. Probably I'm no longer these steretypes. Maybe I'm a combination of all. They are after all an image, a cover, a mask. A mask that we put on so we could fit into society. We cover our insecurities and hide our true colors to satisfy the opinions of other individuals. We put on these masks to have the approval of our peers. So if somebody asks again which steretype am I, I would answer none. I don't need an image to fulfill. One thing I can say is to never live up to others' expectations... Live up only to yours. After all, we outgrow them in the long run, just as I outgrew mine.
So.. What is your high school Stereotype? |
