ISLAY, Scotland

Islay is a beautiful island on the western coast of Scotland. The
island is home to some of Scotland’s best whiskeys and closely linked to
Scotland’s ancient beginnings.

“Islay is the southernmost of the Inner Hebrides off the west
coast of Scotland. The island has a current population of around 3,500 persons
and stretches about 21 miles north to south and a somewhat similar distance
east to west. The two main population centres are Port Ellen and Bowmore, the
latter on a similar latitude to Glasgow but considerably further west.
Traveling is by way of a Caledonian MacBrayne ferry from Kennacraig in West
Loch Tarbert to either Port Ellen or Port Askaig, taking approximately two
hours, or by a 35 minute flight from Glasgow Airport. Probably the main
attraction to visiting or holidaying on Islay apart from the stunning weather
(?) and scenery, is the presence of seven malt whisky
distilleries, six of which are still in production. Loch Gruinart, pretty much
in the centre of the island, is the home of a large RSPB Reserve. With Islay
having been the ancient seat of the Lords of the Isles, there are many sites of
historic interest around the island including Finlaggan towards the north and Dunyvaig Castle in the south, near Lagavulin
Distillery.” The Ileach
