DTS ES (Extended Surround) adds an
additional "center surround" channel. (6.1) This center
surround channel adds more accuracy in the placement of sound
behind the audience. For example an explosion could be placed
directly behind the audience rather than somewhere behind them.
Most of us first heard a DTS (Digtal Theatre System) soundtrack
when we saw Steven Speilberg's 1993 hit Jurassic Park in Theatres.
DTS's approach to theatre sound put the sound on a CD-ROM disc
and the video on film. The CD-Rom player synched with the time
code that was printed on the film itself. More information could
be held in a CD vs in between the sprocket holes of Dolby Digital.
This created better sound quality, in theatres, than Dolby Digital.
It was also easy to have different soundtrack languages simply
by changing the CD rom and not the film.
