Girl Wrestler
Small But Powerful

Written By: Christina Sears

Its not the size of the girl in the fight, Its the size of the fight in the girl, is now the motto of Tina Sears of Hamilton Ontario Canada.

She went into Cathedral High School visualizing basketball, and being the best there is. But being approached with wrestling got her thinking. I remembered watching WWF Wrestling as a kid. Seeing HBK and Bret Hart come out and the crowd go crazy. They always shined in the ring and were amazing. I knew thats what I wanted to do, said Sears trying hard not to giggle.

Sears still wrestles at a 100lbs (or 44 Kilos). My first year in 2000, I only won one match and that was my match to go to OFSAA, but when I got there I got beat up, but as much as I wanted to give up, it only made me stronger, Sears said while showing me her
G.H.A.C ribbon.

In her second year the 44kg wrestler managed to achieve various awards including MVP for her schools female wrestling team and winning G.H.A.C with an incredible gold medal, which again advanced her, another trip to OFSAA. I was determined and was just focused on my matches, but I ended up having to fight on and off the mat due to a extremely bad head cold. In 2002 Tina placed seventh in all of Ontario. I was so proud of myself. 2003 is looking up and Im training as hard as I can. I want to leave a trademark to all my female wrestlers! Especially the itty bitty ones. She explains.
The girl is a very determined wrestler, shes got potential for a higher level after high school, shes got a skill to listen to instructions and use those tactics on the mat listening carefully to everything being told to her on the sidelines by her coaches, said Howard Laung from Ottawa Canada.

Searsy is quite talented, she is always smiling in practice. I could drill them with cardio drills and she would sweat and work and still smile and I like that. It shows shes not a quitter, Said coach Roger Ruiu.

Tina brings a heart to the team, always helping out her fellow team mates, big or small shes there trying to show them the techniques and making them feel good about themselves, said coach Joe Cupido.

Over the years this petite girl has achieved a three-time city championship, two times GHAC championship, along with placing 7th at Ofsaa 2002 in Thunder Bay Ontario.

Much more is expected from her this year. OFSAA is looking up, she is determined to stay focused, Said coach Marrazzo who in 1999 approached Sears with the idea of wrestling.

Bite Size may look all cute and harmless, but once on the mat she turns into   this hungry beast who tears apart anyone who comes in her way, says a fellow teammate. Wrestling is great work out and great for all women. Its not a mans world out there; ladies, take your chances and follow your dreams, is the statement Sears left u s on as she got back on the mat at McMaster University and continues to train.
