A long the San Jose and Milpitas border, tucked away in a quiet community, "lives" Laneview Elementary School. A community of active learners, Laneview is a place where students are challenged to be their best. Teachers and support staff recognize the unique strengths and potential abilities of each student. Many opportunities are offered to students to learn the value of choices. The educational programs reinforce the learning of basic skills and applying them to real life situations in a meaningful way. Their learning experiences are guided by the State standards where expectations of student knowledge and skills are demonstrated at each grade level. The wide range of programs offered to our students make learning an exciting adventure. Enrichment programs support our total learning environment. The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) supports assemblies that promote cultural diversity, safety, leadership, and school spirit. The Fine Arts Mini Experience (FAME) program exposes students to classical art and music. We enjoy performances by the Morrill Middle School choir and orchestra. Third, fourth, and fifth grade students may participate in the district sponsored instrumental music program. Study trips offer students many hands-on experiences. Each year, fifth grade students attend Science Camp where they learn about and experience the surroundings of our natural environment during a weeklong adventure that reinforces classroom science activities. Students participate in many school-wide activities such as, Field Day, Science Faire, Spirit Days, and a developmental P.E. program. The YMCA provides before and after school on-site childcare services. We have programs to address the special learning needs of students. The Literacy Block program offers each student a special learning place for the development of language arts skills. For part of the morning, students are grouped according to their literacy abilities. The Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program provides opportunities for identified students to exercise their talents in the classroom and participate in after school enrichment programs. Instructional support is provided to students performing below grade level (as determined by District and State assessments) through our Title I programs. English as a Second Language (ESL) students gain access to the curriculum through a wide range of instructional strategies designed by cluster teachers, primary language assistants (PLA), and our ESL tutor. The City of San Jose Homework Center grant offers limited English speaking students a place to understand and complete their homework. Our two Special Day Classes are designed to help students maximize their learning potentials. Student achievement and self-esteem are promoted in a variety of ways at Laneview. Monthly assemblies recognize students for citizenship and academic achievements. Students have the opportunity to serve as members of the Safety Patrol, Student Council, and lunchroom helpers. Peer tutoring and Big Buddies are other ways students help students learn and grow at Laneview. Laneview students, in grades 3 and 5, participate in the San Jose Police Conflict and Choices (C-2) program. Green Circle is another conflict management program offered to Laneview staff and students. Parent involvement is emphasized and encouraged. The home and school partnership plays a vital role in the success of Laneview School. Volunteers assist students in the classrooms, office, Media Resource Center, and on study trips. Parents and community members serve on the Site Council, PTA, English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC), Berryessa District Advisory Council (BDAC) and other school and district committees.
