The Education Program
T
he educational program at Brooktree provides children with skills and strategies in many areas; the desired result is a high level of student achievement. The focus for this school year is language arts. The staff and community determined that this is an area that will enhance the abilities of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Language arts is an area in which the staff can pay particular attention to developing the skills of the sizeable population for whom English is a second language. Language arts is the base of a program that includes all subject areas. The goal is the implementation of a well-balanced instructional program — one that is integrated and will guide Brooktree students throughout their lives. Recent shifts in the instructional program are reflected in classroom activities that incorporate cooperative learning, themes that cover more than one subject area, and activities that actively engage all students. Students are setting goals, working in groups to solve problems, becoming familiar with technology, estimating, and doing research. A Brooktree classroom in 2000 looks very different from one in 1978. Times have changed; so have we.

Throughout the district, this theme is consistent. To meet the needs of Brooktree students, strong instruction works hand-in-hand with a variety of programs and projects.

"Success for All" Reading Program
"Success for All" is based on the assumption that every child can read. Some children may need more help and different approaches, but all are capable of being successful readers. This reading curriculum is based on research, effective practices in beginning reading, and an effective use of cooperative learning. Literature, vocabulary~ phonics, phonemic awareness, story structure, comprehension skills, self-assessment, self-correction and the integration of reading and writing are some of the program components. The program emanates from Johns Hopkins University and involves all Brooktree students. Students in grades 1-5 are assessed individually so that they can work with the appropriate reading level. Higher scores, using a variety of assessment tools, indicate that this program "works" for our students.

Title I
This is a federally funded program that
serves students with considerable needs in language arts and mathematics. Much of this year’s funding will support the "Success for All" reading program, materials and reading tutors.

Gifted and Talented Education
Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) serves children who, as the result of testing in second grade, qualify for the program. Their needs are met in after school instruction in the arts, technology or language arts.

"Sun Microsystem Writing Center"
Brooktree Elementary is able to further its vision for quality staff development and creative integrated curriculum through a grant from Sun Microsystems. Children will use the Web to conduct experiments and research. Additionally, language proficiency and creative expression will improve as students work on thematic units of study.

Parent Participation
Brooktree parents serve students in many ways. Three significant school-wide organizations are the School Site Council, Parent Teacher Association and the English Learners Advisory Committee. As an integral component of the "Success for All" program, a Family Support Team was established. Parents work hand-in-hand with staff members to provide support for children with special needs. Dedicated parents work with staff members to provide meaningful curriculum, enrichment activities, emergency preparedness equipment, assemblies and study trips. Without such dedication, we simply could not offer all the services and activities that we do. Parents are encouraged and needed to volunteer for classroom projects, traffic control and in the administration office.

"Second Cup of Coffee"
Second Cup of Coffee mornings are designed for families dropping students off at school. It provides opportunities for families and staff to chat informally. It is a good time to ask questions and receive school and district updates.

Fifth Grade Science Camp
Students attend the Walden West Science Camp annually. Parents and students help with fund-raising efforts to support the week-long stay. This enriching experience is something that children remember for years to come.
