How To Compression Test |

Before making any big mods to an engine its always a good idea to know what kind of shape it is in. A quick and easy way to find out is to do a compression test. If your numbers are significantly lower than stock specs, there is a problem present. In this case stock numbers are 178psi(b13 2.0L). The numbers can also tell you what your problem is, two low numbers right next to each other often show a headgasket problem, other low numbers are usually either valves or rings. You can add a tablespoon or so of oil to the low cylinder to find out if its the rings. This is called a wet compression test, if the number rise a lot, it is your rings. Its usually a good idea to do a leakdown test if and numbers are low, this test can show you what the problem is. |

Tools: Your gonna need a ratchet, extension, spark plug socket, and a compression tester to do this job. |

The first thing you are going to need to do is to warm up your engine to operating temperature. Cold pistons are slightly oval shaped and expand when the heat rises. Therefore, if the engine is cold, your numbers will be low. Next step is to remove all the spark plug wires, and then remove the spark plug from the cylinder you will be testing. |

Now thread the compression tester into that cylinder. Block the throttle plate open, or keep the as pedal at WOT while cranking. Now turn the engine over 4-5 times, read to guage and write down the numbers. Now just do the same thing on the other cylinders. |
