Today we witnessed the complete incineration of any remaining credibility the beauty pageant may have had in the 21st century with Carrie Prejean, the fundies' answer to Anna Nicole Smith, not being fired for breach of contract by posing for nude photos like I was from Bank of America for using the company word processor to commit great literature during lulls in the workload.
Was Perez Hilton pushing an agenda with his question regarding gay marriage? If you think so, then Carrie is also pushing an agenda with her response. There was no way to know she'd make it that far, and by continuing to feign "Biblical correctness" to justify her views while self-according the special right of immunity from counter-denunciation, she marked herself as a jerk. No Offense, honey, but in my country, the United States of America, we believe in not being a jerk based on 5000-year-old religious proscriptions intended to increase birth rates in an era where the average life expectancy was 40 years.
Had she not been a jerk, she would've remained below the radar and consequently nobody would've gone looking for the nude photos, which violated her contract. But apparently contract law means nothing to Donald Trump, who decided to let her remain in her position.
The fundies think she's won some major victory in the Culture Wars with this, but it will be short-lived. The 24-hour news cycle will find something new to fixate upon and drive this off the radar. Carrie will be supplanted by the next It Girl to pop up, because pretty girls are a penny a gross and models like her tend to be unemployabe after the age of 25. Trump will lose money in the long run with his decision, because viewership for beauty pageants has been steadily dropping and he just alienated a key demographic of what was left. Perez will continue being Perez, because that's what Perez does. And gay marriage will persevere regardless of all this, because after five years it's simply faded into the woodwork in New England as a fact of life only noticed whenever fundies like Carrie Prejean come after it because that's what the very Scripture that told her not to dress like a slut tells them.
