Coaches, let them play other sports.
It is amazing how many years I've heard coaches and Parents bad mouth other sports that they don't want their kids to play.  Youth sports, High School is where these kids should be having fun learning a sport and not setting themself for a pro career if they think thats what in store. I not saying that with practice and hard work in the classroom and the field won't payoff, but to be push on one sport can be miss leading.  I believe a sport can be like a great fruit which many sports can give you all sorts of favors like in drills and different bodies of knowlege by many coaches.  You will never know until you try the fruit.

I couldn't agree more. I operate a sports performance center called CATZ and we explain to parents everyday that focusing on only one sport, year-round, makes you better at a narrow range of motion. This is the definition of specialization but for a young athlete it may limit their ability to increase overall athleticism and lead to an increased incidence of injury. When you increase athleticism you are broadening the range of motion that the athlete is strong within. An athlete who has increased range of motion, good agility and power will perform better on the field and a coach is better able to teach fundamentals and game strategy when the athletes are physically able to do the required drills correctly.

How do you increase sport-specific athleticism? Play more than one sport or train with a performance center like CATZ.
