Del Piero to miss Brugge

Football Italia

Alessandro Del Piero’s thigh strain will probably see him miss Juventus’ Champions League opener against Brugge. The Italian champions travel to Belgium next Wednesday but will not be able to count on their charismatic captain.

Del Piero pulled up in training with the national side on Tuesday and flew back to Turin almost immediately. The No 10 underwent initial tests on Wednesday afternoon which confirmed a muscle pull in his right leg. The 31-year-old has already been ruled out of Sunday’s match at Empoli and is a major doubt for the European Cup clash.

Del Piero is set to undergo more tests in a few days time to get a clearer understanding of when he will be available again. The former Padova youngster has yet to appear for the outfit this season after sitting on the bench in the Week 1 opener against Chievo.

His absence will now open the door for Adrian Mutu to possibly figure in boss Fabio Capello’s plans, after he was left in the stands for the opening round of Serie A. Del Piero also obviously missed Italy’s 4-1 win in Belarus last night, a victory aided my Luca Toni’s hat-trick and a Mauro Camoranesi goal.

Buffon backs Del Piero

Planet Football

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has publicly defended his club captain and international colleague Alessandro Del Piero. The Italy striker left the Azzurri's training headquarters with suspicion hanging over the 30-year-old's head that he used a muscle strain as a pretense to walk out of Marcello Lippi's side to face Belarus. Despite Juve's medical staff confirming the legitimacy of the injury, Buffon has been moved to defend Del Piero's character.

"He's had other setbacks in his career but has always come back a special player," Buffon told La Stampa. "I have read unpleasant things about his return from the national team. You can say many things about Del Piero but you can't attack his professionalism."

Del Piero will now be forced to sit out Sunday's Serie A match with Empoli and may also miss the UEFA Champions League tie with Club Brugge.

Juventus No1 Buffon: Lay off Del Piero

Tribal Football

Italy No1 Gigi Buffon has hit back at critics of Juventus and Azzurri teammate Alessandro del Piero. "People can be critical of Del Piero, but his professionalism cannot be in doubt," said the goalkeeper. "He is always the first one to enter the training field and the last one to leave. He is an example for all. He is the same when he plays, as when he doesn't. At this moment, I see him ready and waiting to enter the field and to still astonish us all."

Mutu ready for Juve action

Football Italia

Adrian Mutu has revealed his intention of breaking up the David Trezeguet and Zlatan Ibrahimovic partnership in the Juventus side. The duo seem to be boss Fabio Capello’s preferred attacking pairing right now, but the Chelsea flop has his eyes on changing his tactical mind.

"Trezeguet and Ibrahimovic are the first choices but I am working hard with the objective of finding a little space myself," he stated. The Romanian, dropped to the stands in Week 1, reminded the Coach of his ability with a brace against the Czech Republic on Saturday.

"I’m happy to have netted twice but let us not talk about sending specific messages to Capello," he added. "I am simply doing all that I can to make sure that I am ready when I am called upon to play. I’m feeling in good shape now."

Mutu could feature against Empoli on Sunday, especially as the under-fire Alessandro Del Piero is injured.

"Alex is an example for all of us," continued the former Parma ace. "He works hard in training without ever speaking out. Myself, Del Piero and Marcelo Zalayeta train in order to be called upon when the moment is right. Being regarded as a champion requires players to accept a place on the bench and therefore the Coach’s decisions."

Meanwhile, Del Piero is again being linked with a move to Milan after Luciano Moggi met with Silvio Berlusconi on Thursday. The Juventus director general held surprise talks with the Milan patron at the Palazzo Grazioli. Moggi refused to speak to reporters following the chat, but whispers are already suggesting that Del Piero’s future could have been discussed.

Mutu out to impress

Planet Football

Adrian Mutu is hopeful his goalscoring exploits for Romania caught the eye of Juventus coach Fabio Capello. The forward is feeling his way back to form, following his enforced absence due to a drugs ban, and has a fight on his hands to secure regular playing time in Turin.

He has a spot in the Romania team, though, and proved his class with a brace of goals in the qualifying win over Czech Republic. Mutu admits Capello has a tough job in selecting his strikers, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, David Trezeguet and Alessandro Del Piero vying for places, but is hopeful he made a positive impression at the weekend.

"What I do in the national team or during training is always a message for Capello," said Mutu. "Being relegated to the stands is not a pleasure. I understand Capello, and I learned that it's important to sacrifice yourself for the team. I must say that the goals I scored on Saturday against Czech Republic gave a huge boost to my morale."

Player Profile: Marcelo Zalayeta

Goal.com

Juventus striker Marcelo Zalayeta has converted himself into a Uruguayan national hero after scoring a hatrick last weekend to give Uruguay a vital 3-2 victory over Colombia, and boost his country's chances of qualifying for next years World Cup in Germany.

Name: Marcelo Danubio Zalayeta
Nickname: The Big Panther
Date of Birth: 05/12/1978
Height: 1.88 meters
Weight: 89kg
Position: Striker
Uruguay Debut: 13/12/1997
Current Club: Juventus (Italy)
Former Clubs: Danubio and Penarol (Uruguay), Empoli and Perugia (Italy), Sevilla FC (Spain).

‘The Big Panther’, as he is known in Italy and Uruguay for his elegance, especially in relation to his technique and superb dribbling ability has played in Europe since 1997, but has just recently emerged as an important figure for both club and country.

Zalayeta’s Uruguay senior team debut was in December 1997, a 2-0 victory over UAE for the first round of the Confederations Cup, and since then the striker has made 30 appearances and has scored 10 goals. He has become a key member of the Uruguayan national team, and last weeks ‘9 star’ performance will be remembered for many years to come.

“To say the truth, I’m not sure if I have ever scored three goals in one match”, he stated in an interview after the match in Montevideo.

Zalayeta is hoping to help Uruguay win at-least three points in their final two qualifying matches against Ecuador, and Argentina, that should be enough to earn them a World Cup Playoff birth with Oceania qualifiers Australia.

Marcelo Zalayeta (26) began his professional career at Danubio of Uruguay, a club that his parents supported to the degree that they named their son Marcelo ‘Danubio’ Zalayeta. In 1996 Zalayeta debuted for Danubio’s first team, and made 32 appearances that season, scoring 12 goals. This impressed Uruguayan giants Penarol, who signed the promising striker the following year. Zalayeta continued his good form at Penarol, also making 32 appearances, and this time scoring 13 goals.

Zalayeta was a key member of the successful Uruguayan squad that finished as runner ups to Argentina in the 1997 World Youth Cup in Malaysia, a competition that featured some of today’s biggest stars, including his Juventus teammate David Trezeguet, and Uruguay teammate Pablo Garcia, as well as Juan Roman Riquelme, Pablo Aimar, Michael Owen, and Thierry Henry. Zalayeta scored 4 goals in the tournament, and was voted as the second best player, after his attacking partner Nicolas Olivera.

His good performances were noticed by Italian glamour club Juventus, who snapped him up that same year.

In his first season at Juventus a young Zalayeta made 5 appearances for the first team, scoring one goal, and in the 1998/99 season he just played once, and this would mean that he would move to Empoli on loan for the rest of the season, in order to find a regular first team place. Although he made 17 appearances for the struggling side he only scored 2 goals, but he still caught the attention of Spanish side Sevilla, who signed him on loan for the 1999/2000 Spanish season. The Uruguayan scored five goals in 29 matches for Sevilla, but this wasn’t enough to save them from relegation. The following year he stayed at Sevilla, who had a host of his fellow countrymen, including Zalayeta’s Malaysia 97 strike partner Nicolas Olivera, as well as Marcelo Otero, Inti Podesta, and Tabare Silva. Zalayeta scored five goals for Sevilla, and helped them earn promotion to the Spanish topflight, before moving back to Juventus.

Zalayeta was chosen for Uruguay’s 1999 Copa America squad, and the player’s impressive contribution allowed Uruguay to finish in second place after losing the final to Brazil. Zalayeta scored three goals in the continental tournament, two against Ecuador and the other against hosts Paraguay.

In the 2001/02 season Zalayeta helped Juventus win the Serie A title, making 11 appearances, but scoring no goals. Although he did not find the net he made a large contribution to the side, causing headaches for opposing teams, and setting up important goals. That same year he made 8 appearances for Juve in the Italian Cup, scoring 5 goals, and helping Juventus reach the final, which they eventually lost to Parma on the away goals rule. Zalayeta also made four appearances in the Champions League, scoring once.

The next few seasons saw Zalayeta limited to just a handful of first team appearances after he suffered a severe knee injury when on international duty for Uruguay. When he recovered from the injury he moved on loan to Perugia for the rest of the season.

In the 2002/03 season he helped Juve reach the Italian Cup final once again, that this time they lost to Lazio. He made four appearances in the Champions League, and found the back of the net twice. His name became internationally recognised after scoring an extra-time winner against Barcelona in a crucial quarter final Champions League match, that allowed his club to continue to progress in the tournament, but they eventually lost in the final to bitter rivals A.C Milan after a penalty shootout that saw a Zalayeta spot kick saved by Dida.

The 2004/05 season would see Zalayeta make a huge contribution to Juventus’ successful campaign, after first choice striker David Trezeguet was out for several months due to injury. Zalayeta made 28 appearances (mostly as a starter) for Juventus, and he scored 6 goals in the league, helping the club claim the title for the second consecutive year.

He played an important role in the Champions League, making 8 appearances, and scoring twice, including a wonder strike in extra-time that eliminated Real Madrid in the first knockout round.

This season might just be Zalayeta’s year, and performances like the one in last Sunday’s World Cup Qualifier might just mean that he will get the nod ahead of other more established strikers, such as Alessandro Del Piero, David Trezeguet, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Zalayeta will play an important role in determining whether Uruguay will qualify for next years World Cup in Germany, and an attack consisting of Marcelo Zalayeta, Diego Forlan, and a back in form Alvaro Recoba will be a menace to any side. Defenders beware, as this might just be the year of the Big Panther!

Roma's Totti: Italy can match Brazil

Tribal Football

AS Roma captain Francesco Totti says Italy do not fear Brazil ahead of next year's World Cup finals in Germany. After starring in Italy's 4-1 victory over Belarussia, Totti declared: "We're not scared of Brazil. Indeed, you could say this Italy is very much Brazilian in flavour. In attack we have great quality and on Wednesday we showed it.

"This is a great squad which has no single leaders. We're all leaders and we're all equally important. Now my focus is Roma. I want to have a great championship with them this season."

We’re not Brazil, says Lippi

Football Italia

Italy boss Marcello Lippi has cooled enthusiasm after victory in Belarus almost guaranteed World Cup qualification. The Azzurri are now five points clear in Group 5, with just two games to go, but the tactician isn’t getting carried away with the plaudits after the 4-1 win.

"I’m satisfied but I don’t want comparisons made between ourselves and Brazil or any other nation," he said on Thursday. "I’m very happy with how my team faced this double test, against Scotland and Belarus, over these past few days."

Today’s praise for the Azzurri was rather different from the stinging criticism thrown at the them after their 1-1 draw in the Highlands.

"But we played well in Scotland too," defended the tactician. "Along with us, they are probably the in-form team of the group right now. These past few days have been worth a month together. Now I’ll go fishing for a while and go and watch a few games."

Italy actually went 1-0 down to Belarus on Wednesday until Francesco Totti and hat-trick hero Luca Toni inspired the peninsula boys to victory.

"Totti played well, perhaps better than ever for us," continued Lippi. "He was also expertly helped by Andrea Pirlo and Mauro Camoranesi. All three were decisive. Toni? He was great. He not only scored the goals but he also sacrificed himself by covering on the left when their full-back got forward. This demonstrates that he is in some excellent form."

Cassano set for extension

Football Italia

Antonio Cassano is on the verge of signing a contract extension at Roma, the Serie A club have confirmed. The enigma’s future has been in serious doubt over the summer given that his present deal expires in 2006. But after his much anticipated transfer to Juventus failed to materialise, talks did resume this morning between agent Giuseppe Bozzo and club officials.

"AS Roma and Bozzo confirm that talks, in which administrator Rosella Sensi and Antonio Cassano were also present, regarding an eventual contract extension resumed today," a statement read. "The player’s gesture, who wanted the meeting to demonstrate his desire to stay here over the next few years, was greatly appreciated by the club.

"Both parties have the same desire to find an agreement and we will meet up again in the next few days."

Negotiations over a contract renewal had previously stalled given the difference between Roma’s financial offer and Cassano’s demands. However, whispers in the peninsula on Thursday suggest that the attacking talent has lowered his asking price.

The player is now allegedly looking for a five-year contract worth around £14m in total, while the Olimpico outfit don’t want to offer him more than around £12m. An agreement is expected to be reached soon, which should allow Cassano to play regularly again for the side in World Cup year. The former Bari youngster, signed for £20m, may now make his Serie A debut this term against Udinese on Sunday.

Real Madrid deny offering Salgado to Juventus

Tribal Football

Real Madrid have denied reports they have touted fullback Michel Salgado to Juventus. The defender was quoted as saying that he was happy to accept a loan move to Turin in the New Year. But after Juventus denied the story yesterday, the Spanish outfit have also insisted that no such transfer will take place.

"Real Madrid and Michel Salgado deny that they have spoken about the move of this player to Juventus at the end of December," read a club statement. "Despite the reports that have appeared in the English and Italian media, which include alleged declarations from the player about a loan move, we would like to make it clear that he made no such comments and the club is not considering loaning him to another team."

Ernesto Bronzetti, a FIFA football agent who works closely with the capital outfit, also rejected the speculation. "Salgado will not join Juventus in January," he told Radio Incontro. "He is a 29-year-old and Real would never send him out on loan. If a move does happen then it will be discussed at the end of the season. He has a lot of requests in England."

Empoli – Juventus

Football Italia

The last time Empoli were in Serie A during the 2003-04 season they shocked the peninsula by holding Juventus to a thrilling 3-3 draw at the Stadio Carlo Castellani. The Azzurri will be hoping that once again their home advantage will prove so decisive after their defeat to Udinese. While Juventus were hardly spectacular against Chievo they did all that was needed and will expect another win from this encounter.

Empoli will change to a more defensive 4-2-3-1 formation in an effort to control Juve’s formidable forward line. Nicola Ascoli and Emanuel Michelotti are both still injured which means that the only change in defence comes as Stefano Lucchini is sacrificed to accommodate Francesco Lodi, as Antonio Buscè moves to right-back. Francesco Tavano will shift to the right wing and Mirco Gasparetto is surprisingly chosen as the lone striker, despite the signing of Christian Riganò.

Juventus will make only one change to the side that cruised to victory over Chievo. This comes as Jonathan Zebina joins long-term patients Gianluigi Buffon and Alessandro Birindelli in the treatment room. The French defender suffered a recurrence of last season’s muscular injury in the early stages against the Gialloblu and is likely to miss the visit to Empoli. He will be replaced by Gianluca Pessotto, the same person who came on as a substitute to replace him in Week 1. David Trezeguet continues to partner Zlatan Ibrahimovic up-front, so Alex Del Piero will have to be content with a place on the bench – if he recovers from injury in time.

Empoli (probable): Berti; Buscè, Coda, Vanigli, Bonetto; Ficini, Almiron; Lodi, Vannucchi, Tavano; Gasparetto

Juventus (probable): Abbiati; Pessotto, Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Emerson, Vieira, Nedved; Trezeguet, Ibrahimovic

Ibra crowned ‘New Van Basten’

Football Italia

Juventus boss Fabio Capello believes that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is well on the way to becoming as good as Marco Van Basten. The Swedish striker has been compared to the great Milan and Dutch player on many occasions, a likening which Capello obviously agrees with.

"I’m always showing footage of Marco to Zlatan in an effort to get him to shoot more on goal," revealed the tactician. "Watching great players in action always helps others to learn and improve their very own technique. Van Basten scored loads of goals, many because he simply shot whenever he saw the goal – no matter where he was on the pitch. Our forward has certain movements which do remind me of Van Basten."

Capello, who worked with the Euro ‘88 winner during his time as Milan boss, specifically asked for Ibrahimovic’s capture last summer. The powerful former Ajax attacker instantly settled into his new surroundings and was a major player in the club’s Scudetto triumph.

"You already saw the results last season but now Ibrahimovic scores more goals," added the tactician. "He also nets from distance too. I am absolutely convinced that he will turn into a great goalscorer."

Juventus step up push for Anderlecht's Kompany

Tribal Football

Juventus are considering Anderlecht defender Vincent Kompany for the January market. The 19 year-old has been a long-term target for Juve director general Luciano Moggi, who is now ready to make concrete his interest with injury worries hanging over veteran Lilian Thuram and the club's failure to sign Massimo Oddo from Lazio. The stumbling block remains Anderlecht's £6 million valuation of Kompany, who is also being chased by AC Milan and Inter.

AC Milan, Juventus can sign Barcelona's Messi for £250,000

Tribal Football

Europe's biggest clubs are swarming around Barcelona whizkid Lionel Messi as his contract bungle becomes public. The Argentine's new £1.2 million-a-year Barca deal, which runs to 2010 and has a buyout clause of £100 million, cannot be registered while he remains without a Spanish passport.

While Messi has assured Barca directors of his commitment to the club, that hasn't stopped Italy's biggest clubs from contacting his representatives about moving to the Serie A. AC Milan, Inter and Juventus have all made enquiries with suggestions Messi can be bought out of his existing Barca deal for an incredible £250,000.

Real Madrid are also keen, although the transfer truce between the two clubs is expected to see them stay on the sidelines if Messi indicates frustration with his present situation.

Belarus 1 - 4 Italy

Football Italia

Luca Toni was the hat-trick hero in Minsk as Italy run out with a 4-1 win and extend their lead at the top of Group 5. With a five-point gap opening up from second-placed Norway and two games left, the Azzurri are almost certain of winning this qualifying group.

Following the 1-1 draw in Scotland and Norway's victory, Italy's lead at the top of Group Five was cut to just two points, making a win in Belarus essential. The Azzurri had to do without the suspended Gianluca Zambrotta and Daniele De Rossi, while Alessandro Del Piero was injured.

Alberto Gilardino was surprisingly dropped from the Hampden Park game as a tactical choice, but started in Minsk alongside Luca Toni with support from Francesco Totti. Fabio Grosso, who scored the decisive goal on Saturday, replaced Zambrotta at left-back. The most notable Belarus players were Sampdoria striker Vitalii Kutuzov and Arsenal's new buy Alexander Hleb.

However, it was a disastrous start for Italy, as Kutuzov sprung the offside trap and placed an angled drive past Angelo Peruzzi within the first three minutes of play. Kovba's pass found the Azzurri defence utterly static and nobody tried to close down the Sampdoria man.

Unlike the Scotland game, Lippi's men fought back immediately with Toni, who chested down Mauro German Camoranesi's chipped assist and spun round to fire in the equaliser at the near post. It was a fiery encounter from the very beginning and moments later Totti drilled just wide of the post and at the 10th brought a tough save out of goalkeeper Zhevnov with a fierce free kick.

Toni is on fine form for Fiorentina and he proved it with his second goal of the game. Totti sparked the move and Toni's glancing header on a Grosso cross left the goalkeeper standing. Totti unleashed another powerful set-piece that Zhevnov punched away at full stretch, as Italy were now dominating after their initial uncertainty.

There was still danger, as Hleb sprinted down the left flank and his cross caused panic in the Azzurri area. Gilardino nodded Andrea Pirlo's corner kick wide and an impressive Totti dribbled past several players in the centre before finally being crowded out eight yards from the goal.

A Belkevich header whistled wide as Arsenal man Hleb continued to dictate the play for Belarus with his changes of pace and a powerful but central effort. Camoranesi held off a challenge and placed his chip inches wide of the far post.

The Argentine-born midfielder had been threatening and gave Italy a two-goal cushion going into the half-time break. He ran on to Totti's delicate through ball and thumped a low angled drive into the far corner of the net for his first Azzurri strike.

The second half began with another danger moment, as Bulyga burst through the centre following slips from Cristian Zaccardo and Alessandro Nesta and saw his shot deflected wide by Fabio Cannavaro's last ditch tackle.

Italy were under pressure, but struck with a classic counter-attack to take their lead to 4-1. Totti started the move and Gilardino's effort was only parried into the path of Toni's diving header for the Fiorentina star's hat-trick.

Simone Barone replaced Gilardino, switching Lippi's outfit to a 4-4-2 with Francesco Totti further up the field.Peruzzi was tested on 63 minutes, getting down well to palm away Hleb's piledriver.

Palermo defender Andrea Barzagli replaced Camoranesi for the final stages, pushing Grosso into a midfield position. It could've been 5-1 in the last couple of minutes, but Iaquinta just failed to get on the end of Pirlo's low cross.

The Azzurri were also helped by Scotland, who sensationally beat Norway in Oslo, allowing the Italians to take a five-point lead at the top of Group 5.

Belarus: Zhevnov; Omelianchuk, Yaskovich (Tarlovsky 34), Shtanuk, Kovba; Lavrik; Kulchy (Korytko 79), Belkevich, A Hleb, Bulyga; Kutuzov (V Hleb 75)

Italy: Peruzzi; Zaccardo, Nesta, Cannavaro, Grosso; Camoranesi (Barzagli 84), Pirlo, Gattuso; Totti; Gilardino (Barone 56), Toni (Iaquinta 66)

Lippi lauds four-star Italy

Football Italia

Marcello Lippi has taken aim at those who criticised his side after the Scotland draw, while hat-trick hero Luca Toni makes history. The Italian Press was vicious in its criticism of the Azzurri performance at Hampden Park on Saturday, but Kenny Miller’s brace earned a shock 2-1 victory in Norway this evening to suggest the draw wasn’t a fluke.

“Have you seen what Scotland are capable of? That proves that we weren’t so terrible in getting a draw,” smiled a satisfied Lippi. It is nonetheless evident that the performance in Minsk – crushing Belarus 4-1 – was a step forward for the team.

“This is an improvement and it was important to get a victory, as we played at least an hour of great football and scored four goals.”

Without Alessandro Del Piero, Gianluigi Buffon and suspended duo Gianluca Zambrotta and Daniele De Rossi, the Azzurri ran riot in a new 4-3-1-2 system with Francesco Totti supporting the two strikers.

“Toni and Alberto Gilardino did brilliantly and the Milan striker is slowly getting back to form. Totti’s understanding with his teammates was wonderful today and the whole side is beginning to gel,” concluded the Coach.

This result and Scotland’s victory has extended Italy’s lead at the top of Group 5 to five points, so they need just two from their remaining couple of games to mathematically reach the 2006 World Cup in Germany. “I think that with another point or two we’ll be qualified. It was a great night and I scored three, so I can’t really ask for more than that,” said Toni.

The former Palermo and Brescia hitman becomes the first Fiorentina player ever to score an Italian international hat-trick and is surely now the top choice for a starting role. “I hope that these goals will help me to take an important role in the Italy squad, but it all depends on the Coach and I just want to make sure I’m a valid option.”

Toni also scored on the opening round of the Serie A season and has netted 50 goals in his last two club seasons. “I feel good physically and was fortunate tonight, as you don’t score a hat-trick without a bit of luck. I have to thank my teammates Totti, Gilardino and Fabio Grosso for helping me to get into those scoring positions.”

However, it was a poor start for the Azzurri, as Sampdoria’s Vitalii Kutuzov had given Belarus a shock lead after just four minutes.

“It was only normal that the opener worried us, as we knew that a win here was essential, but this team is strong and we proved that today,” added Toni. “There is always pressure on the Italy side, but the fact that we all have fun and get along really helps us to get over that.”

Real rubbish Salgado rumour

Football Italia

Real Madrid have dismissed reports that Michel Salgado is on his way to Juventus in January.

Salgado was linked with an exit given Real’s capture of Brazilian international full-back Cicinho. "He’ll arrive in January but he will need time to settle," added Bronzetti. "He is a young player and we need to see how he does in his first Spanish championship."

Moggi blocks Salgado arrival

Football Italia

Juventus transfer guru Luciano Moggi insists that Real Madrid full-back Michel Salgado will not be arriving in January. The Spanish international yesterday claimed that a six-month loan move was on the cards once the window re-opened in the New Year.

But Moggi has today maintained that the stopper’s name is not on the arrivals list at the Stadio Delle Alpi. "He can say what he wants but I’m in charge of the transfer strategy at this club," he told the Tuttosport newspaper. "I can tell you he is not part of our plans. We are fine as we are."

However, sources in Spain and Italy claim that a deal could still take place given the Serie A club’s problems in Salgado’s position. Jonathan Zebina is the first choice right-back but the French international has struggled with various muscle strains over the past 12 months.

His natural replacement is Alessandro Birindelli who has been ruled out for around six months with a knee ligament injury. That currently leaves just former Under-21 international Federico Balzaretti, a player who lacks Salgado’s undoubted experience.

Vieira: Arsenal Sale A Surprise

Goal.com

Juventus midfielder Patrick Vieira says his move to Italy this summer came as a surprise. The Frenchman left Arsenal after nine years at the club which had seen him win three titles and four FA Cups.

"For me, the transfer came as a surprise," he said. "I returned from my holidays ready to prepare for another season with Arsenal. But Juventus were extremely determined and from the moment Arsenal said they were prepared to sell, everything happened very quickly." Vieira impressed on his league debut for Juventus as the bianconeri beat Chievo 1-0.

Azzurri lose injured Del Piero

Football Italia

Alessandro Del Piero has withdrawn from the Italian squad for the World Cup qualifier in Belarus because of injury. The Juventus ace was expected to return to the starting line-up on Wednesday but the Azzurri have been robbed of his services.

The No 10, who sat out the 1-1 draw against Scotland on Saturday, has picked up a slight thigh muscle problem. Although medics initially stated that he could recover in time, Del Piero has not flown out to Minsk on Tuesday.

Del Piero picked up the problem in the closing stages of this morning’s training session when he was fielded alongside Francesco Totti and Luca Toni. The 31-year-old, who is now a doubt for the Empoli trip on Sunday, pulled up before limping off the field of play in the knowledge that he had a problem. Milan striker Alberto Gilardino, who was sensationally dropped at the weekend, may now be handed a starting jersey.

There was another injury scare earlier today when Alessandro Nesta received a nasty blow on the wrist. However, the Milan stopper will start in a defence which should include Cristian Zaccardo, Fabio Cannavaro and Fabio Grosso – who replaces the suspended Gianluca Zambrotta.

Mauro Camoranesi will probably begin in midfield instead of the banned Daniele De Rossi. Boss Marcello Lippi is set to stick with the trident attack with Toni probably replacing Christian Vieri.

Italy possible: Peruzzi; Zaccardo, Nesta, Cannavaro, Grosso; Camoranesi, Pirlo, Gattuso; Totti; Gilardino, Toni

Lippi has selection doubts

Football Italia

Italy boss Marcello Lippi has conceded that the loss of Alex Del Piero may result in a tactical rethink for the Belarus game. The Juventus captain pulled out of the World Cup qualifier earlier today with a thigh problem, leaving Lippi to ponder his options.

"I’m very disappointed for Alex who was looking in good form over the past few days," the Coach commented. "Will we still play with a trident attack in his absence? Alex has certain characteristics and I will now evaluate a few other solutions. We could do some different things than we did in Glasgow. I’ll only decide on the team once the final training session is over."

Del Piero was being tipped to start in a three-man attack consisting of himself, Francesco Totti and a target man between Alberto Gilardino or Luca Toni. The Azzurri drew 1-1 in Scotland on Saturday but that disappointing display will result in changes.

"I am forced into two as Daniele De Rossi and Gianluca Zambrotta are suspended," added the former Juventus Coach. "I already had a couple more changes in my mind before. In order to be mathematically certain of qualification, we need seven points and I don’t care where they come from. All I can assure ahead of Wednesday is that we will start the match with the intention of winning, as we did against Scotland."

Meanwhile, Alberto Gilardino insists that his relationship with Lippi is still good despite his shock omission from the side at the weekend.

"I am fortunate to have a good dialogue with the Coach which allows us to go forward in the right manner," said the Milan striker. "We have spoken and I didn’t criticise his decision. We have a relationship made up of mutual respect. I have trained well and there are no problems. I am at the total disposal of the Coach."

U-21: Gentile calls for less errors

Football Italia

Italy Under-21 boss Claudio Gentile insists his boys will not make the mistakes they made in Scotland against Belarus on Tuesday. The Azzurrini put in a shaky display at Motherwell on Friday, even if the 2-2 draw is set to be converted into a 3-0 win after the Scots fielded an ineligible player.

"We won’t repeat the same errors against Belarus," insisted the former World Cup winner. "We’ve watched the tape of the game against Scotland, but we were reassured by the fact that we were not as dominated as we first feared. The boys are aware that we made some mistakes in the match and that we need to improve. Our objective is to win in Belarus and end the group stages in first place."

Italy, the reigning European champions, are currently five points clear of Norway – even if that will be seven once UEFA confirm the result of Scotland-Italy. Gentile will have to make some changes to his line-up after Marco Motta and Simone Pepe were dismissed on Friday night. Striker Rolando Bianchi is also out with injury.

Fiorentina striker Giampaolo Pazzini will start in attack after he missed last week’s game with a ban. He is likely to be supported by a trident of Andrea Lazzari, Riccardo Montolivo and Alessandro Rosina. However, Gentile could give rising star Raffaele Palladino his debut at some stage during the match. The Livorno striker, who is owned by Juventus, scored 15 goals in Serie B last term with Salernitana.

U21: Azzurrini reach play-offs

Football Italia

A 1-1 draw in Belarus proved enough to qualify Italy for the European Under-21 European Championship play-offs thanks to Andrea Lazzari’s goal.

“We had a good start and could’ve won it, but the lads were a little tired and we brought home a valuable result,” said Coach Claudio Gentile. “We have the quality to do better and just need to bring that out. I changed to a one-striker system because we couldn’t risk our midfield being over-run. We’re content with the draw.”

Gentile made several changes to the side that had drawn 2-2 in Scotland on Friday, replacing the suspended Simone Pepe, Marco Motta, Marco Donadel and the injured Rolando Bianchi, although Fiorentina hitman Giampaolo Pazzini returned from a one-match ban.

Although the team drew against Scotland, that result was changed to a 3-0 victory as Hibernian midfielder Steven Whittaker was played despite being unavailable for the tie due to suspension. With this in mind, a draw in Belarus would be enough to automatically qualify Italy for the play-offs of the European Under-21 Championships.

They got off to a great start, as within six minutes Andrea Lazzari had broken the deadlock by firing his finish under the crossbar. It was a good team move sparked by Sammarco winning back the ball in midfield and Alessandro Rosina rolled it across for Atalanta youngster Lazzari to score.

It didn’t last long, as soon after Kantsavy found space to jump between Potenza and Piccolo, nodding in Tigorev’s cross for the Belarus equaliser.

Moments later, Kantsavy nearly turned the game around completely with another header that skimmed the woodwork. Plaksonny also went close for the home side, while goalkeeper Lesko sprinted off his line to close down Pazzini.

The Azzurrini improved in the second half and Rosina again set up Pazzini, but this time Lesko did brilliantly to recover his position and flap away a delicate lob. On the hour mark the Belarus goalkeeper performed his third tough save on Fiorentina’s Pazzini, a powerful strike rebuffed with his fists.

Alberto Aquilani and Kantsavy both curled free kicks inches wide of the target and there was a stoppage-time scare when Gianluca Curci flew to palm Kovel's effort round the post. It ends 1-1 and Italy progress to November's European Under-21 Championship play-offs. This evening Norway were defeated 1-0 by Scotland, ensuring Gentile's boys mathematically top Group Five.

The Azzurrini are the defending champions after winning the 2004 edition and have won five of the last seven European Championships at Under-21 level.

Scorers: Lazzari 6 (I), Kantsavy 11 (B)

Belarus U21: Lesko; Tigorev, Stashchanyuk (Maroz 72), Liantsevich, Plaskonny; Kisliak (Pavlov 46), Shkabara, Kovel, Skvrnyuk (Pakulin 60); Kantsavy, Afanasyeu

Italy U21: Curci; Potenza, Piccolo, Bovo, Marchese; Aquilani, Sammarco; Rosina, Lazzari (Montolivo 63), Pagano; Pazzini (Palladino 82)

Japanese Federation Wants Collina

Goal.com

President Masaru Suzuki confirmed the interest in the Italian referee. Following his resignation from the AIA (Italian Referee Federation), Pierluigi Collina has received various offers to go direct football games in different countries, including England and Qatar. The latest offer has arrived from Japan where it was announced by the President of the Japanese Football Federation, Masaru Suzuki.

"A referee of Collina’s level would be of great value for the J-League. If it was Collina to whistle, that would help the fans to respect the authority of the referees."

Roma set up Cassano talks

Football Italia

Roma will meet with Antonio Cassano’s agent on Friday in their latest attempt to extend his contract. Giallorossi officials will entertain Giuseppe Bozzo in a desperate assault to not lose their £20m signing for nothing next summer.

Cassano is only tied to the capital outfit until June 2006 and the two parties have so far failed to iron out any sort of deal. With the player’s much anticipated transfer to Juventus failing to materialise, Roma are now focused on reaching some sort of agreement with the talent.

The main stumbling block in negotiations is the vast amount of difference between the club’s offer and the player’s desire. The 2001 Scudetto winners are ready to hand the former Bari sensation a five-year contract worth around £2.4m a season. However, the highly rated Cassano is looking for a contract worth around £3.4m for each term.

A solution could be found if Roma agree to insert a release clause which would allow the player to leave at the end of this season for between £6m and £8m. That would allow the club to not lose Cassano for free and would ensure that the starlet plays regularly in World Cup year, rather than watch most games from the bench as ‘punishment’ for not extending.

Roma are hopeful a deal can be done and club official Bruno Conti is confident that the player has archived his tough summer. "Antonio is re-finding his serenity and we are optimistic about the future," he stated.

AC Milan eyeing Parma defender Bonera

Tribal Football

AC Milan are considering a move for Parma defender Daniele Bonera in January. With concerns hanging over Paolo Maldini and Marek Jankulovski, Milan are weighing up a return to the market in January for a new defender.

Bonera revealed last week he received an offer from Liverpool, while Inter Milan have also confirmed their interest. But Milan have maintained contact with Parma since the signing of Alberto Gilardino and are confident they will see off all competition should they decide to push through a deal for Bonera.

Salgado set for Juve loan

Football Italia

Real Madrid full-back Michel Fernandez Salgado will become a Juventus player in January, according to reports. The Spanish international was associated with a Turin switch in the summer but that now looks likely to occur in the New Year.

"Real have offered me to Juventus on a six-month loan deal starting in January," Salgado is quoted as saying. "The Real directors have told me this directly and it is a solution that I am happy with."

Rumours suggest that Salgado, who is contracted to the Spaniards until 2009, was initially offered to Juventus back in August. However, the move didn’t take place as the European giants failed to bring in Brazilian full-back Cicinho before transfer deadline day.

The South American should complete his switch in the New Year though which will relegated the 29-year-old to the Real bench. That is unless Salgado joins Juventus, a move which would apparently be welcomed by boss Fabio Capello.

The Italian champions do seem to have a few problems at right-back given the injuries affecting Jonathan Zebina. To make matters worse, his natural replacement is Alessandro Birindelli who won’t recover from knee ligament damage for at least another six months.

Meanwhile, Juventus striker Marcelo Zalayeta has reminded Capello of his ability after scoring a hat-trick for his country. Zalayeta’s treble allowed Uruguay to defeat Colombia 3-2 in their latest World Cup qualifier.

Nedved urges Juventus to sign Sivok

Tribal Football

Pavel Nedved has recommended Sparta Prague midfielder Tomas Sivok to Juventus chiefs. Nedved rates the Czech Republic international very highly and has told Juve director general Luciano Moggi to keep a close eye on the 22 year-old this season. Juve ace Nedved is convinced Sivok will become a hot property should the Czech Republic make next year's World Cup finals in Germany.

More Bench In Del Piero's Future

Goal.com

Alessandro Del Piero is set to start on the bench when Italy face Belarus on Wednesday. After being left out of the team that faced Scotland on Saturday, the Juventus skipper was hoping to get Lippi’s nod for Wednesday’s crucial World Cup Qualifier, but tests carried out in today’s training session seem to indicate Lippi will opt for a three man attack composed by Totti, Toni, and Gilardino.

Despite these negative signals, Del Piero does however still nurture some hopes of playing from the starting whistle. “Hopefully my time has come. We can ‘t achieve a draw. We must win,” he said. Italy currently top the Group 5 standings, with a two point edge over on-form Norway, and three games left to be played.

Del Piero won't consider Juventus exit

Tribal Football

Juventus ace Alessandro del Piero refused to publicly comment on his club future after Azzurri training yesterday. Del Piero admitted frustration over the weekend at both club and international level, but insists he remains committed to Juve's cause, despite their public pursuit of AS Roma striker Antonio Cassano.

"Lippi hasn't said anything to us about Wednesday (against Belarussia)," said Del Piero. "Of course, we must win in Belarussia. "To continue being outside the starting XI is difficult, but I accept the coach's choice calmly and feel part of the Azzurri plans. Even when I am not selected, I feel part of Lippi's plans."

Materazzi on the defensive

Football Italia

Marco Materazzi has urged Italy boss Marcello Lippi to not use an untested three-man defence in Belarus. There is speculation that Lippi could opt for such a tactic after Saturday’s disappointing display in the 1-1 draw against Scotland. But although Materazzi would probably be promoted to the first team with the introduction of a 3-4-3 formation, the stopper is remaining cautious.

"I think it is rather risky to change the system without trying it out first," said the Inter centre-back. "I am ready for use but we have never played with a three-man defence. We’ll see what Lippi decides."

It’s unclear at this stage what plans the tactician has for Wednesday’s crucial qualifier in the former Soviet Union. Whispers this morning suggested that Alex Del Piero and Alberto Gilardino will be recalled to the starting line-up, supported by Francesco Totti in a trident attack.

However, Lippi tested a front three of Totti, Gilardino and Luca Toni in one of today’s practice sessions. "I don’t know who will start," said Fiorentina striker Toni. "It’s obvious that everyone here wants to play but there are only 11 shirts. If Lippi wants me then I will be ready."

Two changes that look almost certain to occur are the introduction of Fabio Grosso, who scored on Saturday, and Mauro Camoranesi to the starting line-up. They will step in for the suspended Gianluca Zambrotta of Juventus and Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi.

Italy coach Lippi in angry media bust-up

Tribal Football

Italy coach Marcello Lippi has had a bust-up with a RAI cameraman. Virgilio Sport says Lippi caught the cameraman filming him in the lobby of a Glasgow hotel and lashed out at the RAI employee. After barking an expletive, Lippi rapped: "You do not have permission to film me. You cannot film me secretly." However, in the evening, Lippi approached the cameraman to apologise for his actions and so drawing a close to the episode.

U-21s to be handed Scottish win

Football Italia

The Italian Under-21 side’s 2-2 draw against Scotland on Friday is set to be turned into an Azzurrini win by UEFA. European Football’s governing body are expected to take the step after the home side fielded an ineligible player.

Hibernian midfielder Steven Whittaker played the entire game despite being unavailable for the tie, after he picked up bookings against Moldova and Belarus. The Scottish Football Association have admitted their mistake and a 3-0 result is now likely to be handed out by UEFA.

"The Scottish FA is apologising to UEFA and the Italian FA for this rules infringement, as well as to the player and his club," said an SFA spokesman.

Claudio Gentile’s side should now therefore move on to 18 points in the group, seven clear of second placed Norway. A win in Belarus on Tuesday will now almost certainly be enough to ensure qualification for the Euro 2006 play-offs.

France have Thuram concern

Football Italia

Juventus defender Lilian Thuram is a doubt for France’s do-or-die World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland on Wednesday. Thuram was replaced during the second half of Saturday’s 3-0 win over the Faroe Islands with heavy bruising after receiving a knee in the thigh while going for a header.

"It’s one of those things that can either get better really quickly, or it can just go on and on," said cryptic Coach Raymond Domenech. Goalscorer Djibril Cissé is also doubtful after turning his ankle in the dying stages of Saturday’s comfortable victory.

Meanwhile, Juventus midfielder Patrick Vieira has claimed he is more than ready to reacquaint himself with his old enemy Roy Keane. The two will come face to face when France take on Ireland at Lansdowne Road in midweek.

"He [Keane] is the most important Irishman," said the former Arsenal man, who has come up against the Manchester United skipper in some heated Premiership battles. "It’s him that imposes his rhythm on the others and dictates how they play. Our meetings have always been heated but I won’t be taking any backwards steps on Wednesday. I never give up."

J-League plot Collina swoop

Football Italia

J-League chiefs are attempting to bring Italian referee Pierluigi Collina out of retirement. Collina decided to quit the game last Monday after being told that he could not officiate in Serie A.

Although he was given special clearance to continue for one more year, after reaching the maximum age of 45, he courted controversy this summer. That after signing a sponsorship deal with car manufacturers Opel – the same company who back Milan – which led to conflict of interest issues.

But Collina could now be offered the chance to resume his career in Japan’s national League. "The level of J-League referees is not low but they tend to be criticised for their judgements," said J-League boss Masaru Suzuki. "If Mr Collina blows the whistle, it will help the fans understand the authority of referees." Collina has also been strongly linked with a move to the Premiership given the respect he still has in England.

Angry Del Piero admits Juventus frustration

Tribal Football

Juventus star Alessandro del Piero admits his treatment by club and country is beginning to wear thin. "I don't expect to have an automatic place in the side based on what I have done in the past, but I do want more respect and consideration," he snapped.

"It is in my destiny that I must always prove myself again and again," continued the disillusioned star. "Last year in Moldova was much the same and I'm here in an identical position once more. In any case, it is only right that everyone must earn their place.

"I do like the new trident attack system that Lippi is adopting and it's right to focus on the quality we have in Italian football. It's also possible for me to play alongside Totti with this tactic. We will aim to take control and earn all three points in Scotland to ensure our qualification for the World Cup."

The real battle is with Juventus and Coach Fabio Capello's treatment of him - substituting Del Piero 20 times in Serie A alone last season - has spread to the rest of the club. This week Juve shareholder and FIAT President Luca Cordero di Montezemolo told journalists that Antonio Cassano was the ideal advertising representative for the new Punto because "he's more cheeky."

"That just means there will be other cars for me in the future," said a visibly upset Del Piero when told of this statement.

Lippi under fire over Gila mystery

Football Italia

The Italian Press was unimpressed by some of Marcello Lippi’s choices in Scotland, especially as Alberto Gilardino revealed he was not injured. The Milan striker, who arrived from Parma in a £17m deal in the summer, was expected to start the match only to end up in the stands for the 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw.

“I only found out I would be watching the game at around midday,” he said. “I was given no explanation, but that’s part of football. The Coach’s decision is final.”

Lippi had assured that it was a mutual choice, claiming that the player was “not quite as sharp as he should’ve been” and “agreed it was best to sit this one out so that he could return to face Belarus on Wednesday.”

He instead chose Udinese forward Vincenzo Iaquinta to complete the trident attack with Christian Vieri and Francesco Totti, changing two thirds of the starting strike force he’d used in the 2-1 friendly victory over the Republic of Ireland.

One player who did remain from that Dublin test was Cristian Zaccardo, whose costly error allowed Kenny Miller to open the scoring. The Palermo full-back had also given away a goal in Ireland last month and the Press in the Peninsula considers him something of a liability.

His substitute, Palermo teammate Fabio Grosso, was far more effective and even scored the equaliser at Hampden Park, but Lippi insists it’s not the end of the road. “Zaccardo was not substituted because I wasn’t happy with his performance. It was simply so that I could have a more attacking option on that side and Grosso allowed me that,” maintained the Azzurri boss.

With Norway’s 3-2 victory in Slovenia last night, Italy’s lead at the top of Group Five has been cut to just two points, making Wednesday’s journey to Belarus a potentially perilous one. Gianluca Zambrotta and Daniele De Rossi will be suspended, so Lippi must make further changes to a side that disappointed in Scotland.

Mauro German Camoranesi should step in for the Roma midfielder, but there is clearly a growing problem finding reliable full-backs. Some sections of the local Press are now suggesting that Christian Panucci be recalled to the international set-up, although that might be unlikely considering his past rows with Lippi during their time at Inter.

Lippi explains Gilardino snub

Football Italia

Marcello Lippi tried to explain the reasoning behind Alberto Gilardino’s exclusion, but won't call up replacements for the suspended players.

“My decision was based on our training sessions, as I didn’t see Gilardino look particularly sharp of late,” insisted the Coach after the Milan star was left in the stands for the 1-1 draw at Hampden Park. “Did he take it badly? On the contrary, he thanked me for the reasons I gave.”

This contrasts markedly with the version of events given by Gilardino earlier today, as he stated that it was a shock to him. “I only found out I would be watching the game at around midday,” he said. “I was given no explanation, but that’s part of football. The Coach’s decision is final.”

The Italian Press has put the blame for the poor performance squarely on Lippi’s shoulders, as tactical choices and inexperienced players took many by surprise. It’s an attitude that has clearly made an impact on the former Juventus boss, who pushed RAI cameras away after today’s Press Conference.

“I think our display in Scotland was a step forward,” insisted the tactician. “I saw a team that played positive football and was taken by surprise on Kenny Miller’s goal. Our only disappointing period was between the 20th and 35th minutes in the first half, but after the break we showed courage, grit and desire to ensure Scotland were happy to get away with a draw.”

Vincenzo Iaquinta was chosen to replace Gilardino in the starting line-up, leaving aside Fiorentina’s on-form hitman Luca Toni. “I chose Iaquinta for his pace that in my view completed a trident attack that already had technique, quality and creativity. Vincenzo gave the team depth like no-one else.”

The next test is in Belarus on Wednesday and, with Norway’s 3-2 victory in Slovenia, it’s one they must win to avoid seeing their two-point lead eradicated altogether. Gianluca Zambrotta and Daniele De Rossi return to Italy as they are suspended, but Lippi is surprisingly not calling in any replacements.

“We do not need other players to complete the squad,” he insisted. “I have faith in Cristian Zaccardo and Daniele Bonera, who are young and making their mark on the international stage.”

U21: Gentile calls three new boys

Football Italia

The suspensions and injuries caused by the Scotland game have forced Claudio Gentile to call three new players for the trip to Belarus. Both Simone Pepe and Marco Motta were sent off during Friday’s 2-2 draw and Marco Donadel was booked, ruling all three out of next week’s European Under-21 Championship qualifier.

With Rolando Bianchi also struggling with an injury, Coach Gentile has called in an extra three players to bolster the squad for this trip. Livorno striker Raffaele Palladino had already been brought in and he is joined by Bari midfielder Pasquale Berardi and Verona’s Mattia Cassani.

The Azzurrini will also be able to count on Giampaolo Pazzini, as the Fiorentina star sat out the Scotland game on a one-match ban. Italy currently lead qualifying Group Five on 16 points ahead of Norway’s 11. Belarus and Slovenia follow on nine after seven encounters.

Del Piero demands respect

Football Italia

Alessandro Del Piero has silently accepted 20 substitutions at Juve and a place on the bench in the Italy squad, but Pinturicchio has finally lost patience and hit out. “I don’t expect to have an automatic place in the side based on what I have done in the past, but I do want more respect and consideration,” he snapped.

Once the Golden Boy of Italian football, the 30-year-old is now reaching a crossroads in his career. The club situation is becoming intolerable, as the captain is now third choice behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic and David Trezeguet, with further competition from Adrian Mutu.

It is also affecting his international career, as Marcello Lippi recalled him after almost a year to play in the 2-1 friendly victory over the Republic of Ireland, but he’ll probably be benched against Scotland with the return of Francesco Totti.

“It is in my destiny that I must always prove myself again and again,” continued the disillusioned star. “Last year in Moldova was much the same and I’m here in an identical position once more. In any case, it is only right that everyone must earn their place.”

“I do like the new trident attack system that Lippi is adopting and it’s right to focus on the quality we have in Italian football. It’s also possible for me to play alongside Totti with this tactic. We will aim to take control and earn all three points in Scotland to ensure our qualification for the World Cup.”

The real battle is with Juventus and Coach Fabio Capello’s treatment of him – substituting Del Piero 20 times in Serie A alone last season – has spread to the rest of the club. This week Juve shareholder and FIAT President Luca Cordero di Montezemolo told journalists that Antonio Cassano was the ideal advertising representative for the new Punto because “he’s more cheeky.”

“That just means there will be other cars for me in the future,” said a visibly upset Del Piero when told of this statement. The summer transfer window may have closed, but many still expect Cassano to join Juventus in January – effectively freezing out Alex altogether.

Del Piero to be patient

Planet Football

Alessandro Del Piero is refusing to panic over his slow start to the new season. Juventus kicked off the defence of their Serie A title last weekend with a 1-0 victory over Chievo Verona. The win was achieved minus the contribution of Del Piero, after the forward was left on the substitutes' bench by coach Fabio Capello.

Del Piero is not perturbed by his omission, despite the fact he has been a regular in the Juve team for the past decade. He admits his history with Juventus counts for nothing and he is determined to force his way back into Capello's starting line-up.

"Let's wait," commented Del Piero. "In the league, only one game has been played. Now I'm here again and I pretend nothing for what I did in the past. But there should be a little more respect and consideration, that's all. Anyway, it's right you play for a place in the line-up at the moment."

Scotland 1 - 1 Italy

Football Italia

Fabio Grosso's late goal saved Italy from an embarrassing defeat in Scotland, but this was a very sluggish performance.

Marcello Lippi has pledged to stick with the trident attack all the way through the World Cup campaign, but was forced to leave Alberto Gilardino in the stands in favour of Udinese's Vincenzo Iaquinta due to a last-minute injury. Only Christian Vieri started from the strikers who beat the Republic of Ireland 2-1 in August's friendly, Francesco Totti coming in for Alessandro Del Piero.

Angelo Peruzzi made his Azzurri comeback in place of the injured Gigi Buffon and it was an emotional moment for former Glasgow Rangers midfielder Gennaro Gattuso. Italy had their first scoring opportunity after just one minute, as a Totti free kick came out to Cristian Zaccardo and the goalkeeper reacted to block his shot at the near post.

Vieri then shrugged off Webster's challenge and broke away through the centre, though his long-range effort was well smothered by Craig Gordon.

However, it was Scotland who broke the deadlock after 13 minutes with Kenny Miller. Zaccardo was caught napping on a sweeping Paul Hartley cross and Miller rose to nod in past a helpless Peruzzi. Palermo defender Zaccardo has disappointed during his international career so far, as his error also gave away a goal in Dublin last month.

Gianluca Zambrotta and Daniele De Rossi were booked and both will miss Wednesday's trip to Belarus through suspension. Overall the Azzurri's reaction was sluggish and gave away possession very easily.

It took a crucial intervention from Paul Hartley to prevent Zambrotta getting on the end of Andrea Pirlo's long pass. From the resulting corner kick, Pirlo and Zambrotta combined again and Gordon flapped the ball off the Juve defender's head.

Iaquinta connected with Pirlo's cross only to nod it over the bar from six yards in a wasteful error. Soon after, Vieri blasted off target and was flagged offside, though replays suggest he might not have been. Gordon plucked Zambrotta's good cross off Iaquinta's head, while Totti was furious when Vieri fell in the area sandwiched between two defenders and saw his penalty appeals rejected.

Vieri was extremely unfortunate not to equalise on the stroke of half-time, when he hooked Totti's pass towards the net, but Weir dived in to deflect it round the post and Italy went into the break trailing Scotland.

Palermo fullback Fabio Grosso replaced his club teammate Zaccardo for the second half, making his ninth international appearance, moving Zambrotta over to the right flank. Totti drilled wide from a promising position and promptly got himself booked. Mauro German Camoranesi, who was expected to start, came in for the disappointing De Rossi.

Vieri was caught offside at the end of a fine team move, but Alessandro Nesta had to make a crucial intervention to block Miller's dangerous counter-attack.

The Azzurri really should've equalised on the hour mark when Totti intercepted a Graham Alexander error and rolled the ball across for Vieri at the far post, but he somehow managed to sidefoot it over from six yards. It was a fairly similar opportunity to one that Vieri famously missed in the 2002 World Cup against South Korea, although the ball did bounce right in front of the Milan striker.

Lippi's final substitution was Fiorentina centre-forward Luca Toni for Iaquinta, leaving Del Piero on the bench.

Italy were pushing forward continually in the second half and eventually drew level at the 75th minute. Camoranesi's corner kick was nearly turned into an own goal, but Gordon's one-handed reaction save only went as far as substitute Grosso for an acrobatic volley. It was the first goal that Italy have ever scored on Scottish soil.

Toni and Vieri had efforts charged down as the Azzurri put the pressure on in the final stages.

Scotland: Gordon; Alexander, Dailly, Webster, Weir; Ferguson; Fletcher, McNamara, Quashie (McCann 66), McFadden; Miller (Beattie 76)

Italy: Peruzzi; Zaccardo (Grosso 46), Cannavaro, Nesta, Zambrotta; Gattuso, Pirlo, De Rossi (Camoranesi 60); Totti; Iaquinta (Toni 71), Vieri

Lippi satisfied with Scotch show

Football Italia

Marcello Lippi insisted he was satisfied with Italy’s performance at Hampden Park, although he must make major changes for the trip to Belarus.

“We only allowed them one real chance in the first half and let ourselves get taken by surprise,” said the Coach of their 1-1 draw in Scotland. “You could see we were trying to attack and kept that up for all 90 minutes. I liked the side, apart from a few minor problems. Kenny Miller did very well and gave our defenders a lot of things to think about.”

Miller had given the Scots a shock lead that lasted until the 75th minute, when substitute Fabio Grosso netted the equaliser from a corner kick. However, Lippi will have to make some big changes to his line-up, as Gianluca Zambrotta and Daniele De Rossi are suspended, while Alberto Gilardino was left in the stands today due to a mysterious last-minute injury.

“Gilardino didn't look sharp to me and he agreed. We’ll recover our fitness levels and see what happens in Belarus, as from this evening we’ll begin to think about solutions for that line-up.”

The hero of the hour was Palermo full-back Grosso, who scored the first goal that Italy have ever managed to net on Scottish soil. “I didn’t know that, so it’s an extra special goal for me,” said the substitute. “It was already incredible that it was my first Azzurri goal and that it helped us to earn a precious point in a tough game.”

Palermo made their first Serie A appearance in 30 years last season, but have already put several of their players into the Azzurri squad. “When we come here, everyone is part of the same Club Italia and all of that is left behind. It’s nice for Palermo that they have so many internationals, as it shows they are working well.”

Grosso admits that the performance was below par and that the Azzurri have to improve if they are to stay top of Group 5 and qualify for the 2006 World Cup. There was a positive result for Italy, as Moldova beat Belarus 2-0 today. “We knew it was going to be difficult here and they put us under pressure, but we fought back and fully deserved our point. Obviously, we hope to do better in Belarus on Wednesday.”

U21: Palladino to face Belarus

Football Italia

Claudio Gentile has called up Livorno’s new starlet Raffaele Palladino to face Belarus, as three players will be suspended after the fiery Scots tie. The Azzurrini drew 2-2 in Scotland last night in a match that saw three men sent off – including Italian duo Simone Pepe and Marco Motta. In addition, Marco Donadel was booked and will also be suspended for the next game.

With this in mind, Coach Gentile has called in Palladino for Tuesday’s European Under-21 Championship qualifier in Belarus. Palladino made quite an impact on his Livorno debut last Saturday, scoring in their 2-1 victory over Lecce on his Serie A debut.

The 21-year-old impressed in Serie B last season, netting 15 goals in 39 appearances for Salernitana and is still owned by Juventus. This will be his second appearance for the Azzurrini, last featuring in a 2-1 victory over Russia on February 8 2005.

Palladino could well be given a starting shirt against Belarus, as striker Rolando Bianchi is a major doubt after limping off during the Scotland game.

Bonera reveals Liverpool interest

Football Italia

Parma stopper Daniele Bonera has revealed that Liverpool were the only club seriously interested in his capture this summer. The highly-rated defender was associated with a host of clubs but the European champions showed the most interest.

"The only real important bid came from Liverpool," said the versatile player. "But the club decided that is wasn’t big enough to release me."

Inter are also known to have failed in an attempt to net the player on loan, but Bonera has dismissed talk of a move to Fiorentina. "Negotiations over a switch to Florence never existed," underlined the former Brescia youngster.

Speculation suggested that Viola boss Cesare Prandelli wanted Bonera after the pair spent time together at the Stadio Tardini in the past. Bonera has remained with the Gialloblu but reports are already suggesting that his stay will be temporary.

Juventus are apparently pondering a move for the Azzurri regular in the New Year given their problems at right-back. Jonathan Zebina suffered with numerous injuries last term and limped out of the Chievo win in Week 1 with another physical problem. Juve are also without back-up full-back Alessandro Birindelli until February following knee ligament surgery.

Lecce made Miccoli bid

Football Italia

Fabrizio Miccoli says he was close to joining Lecce before he opted to leave Juventus for Benfica. The pint-sized striker agreed a one-year loan deal with the Portuguese giants on transfer deadline day, but only after the southern minnows made a late approach.

"Before I signed for Benfica, there was a chance that I could have joined Lecce," stated the Italian international. "I would like to thank the Giallorossi and their officials for their interest in me."

Miccoli was born in Lecce and has openly admitted on numerous occasions that he would like to star at the Via Del Mare at some stage in his career. The former Perugia player has endured a tough summer after he was forced to return to Juventus from Fiorentina. But the Old Lady didn’t intend to keep him, possibly after the player stated that it would be a "tragedy" if he moved back to the Delle Alpi.

"I don’t know whether I paid the price for that phrase," continued the attacker. "But that is all over now as it is the past. Everyone is happy with the situation, as Juventus have sold me and I can finally play football again."

Azzurri: Lippi committed to trident

Football Italia

Marcello Lippi insists that Italy’s defensive days are behind them, as he’ll stick to the trident attack all the way to the World Cup – starting in Scotland. “From now on, the Azzurri are committed to creating a team with three strikers upfront,” said the Coach ahead of Saturday’s World Cup qualifier.

Francesco Totti, Alberto Gilardino and Christian Vieri are expected to start at Hampden Park in an all-attack line-up that also includes creative midfielders Andrea Pirlo and Mauro German Camoranesi. “The nature of Totti’s characteristics means he’ll start in a slightly deeper role, but I must point out that not even the players know what the initial eleven will be. I can say that Vieri is fit to play.”

The Milan centre-forward cut yesterday’s training session short with a dizzy spell, but was given the all-clear by medical staff. Italy’s recent tournament campaigns have been criticised for their defensive nature under former Coach Giovanni Trapattoni, who failed to progress past the Second Round in the 2002 World Cup and Group stage in Euro 2004.

“Let us not kid ourselves that with three strikers everything will be sorted out,” added Lippi. “Merely punting the ball up field is not enough to win games. Just as defenders push forward to help and then go back to their positions, the attacking players must take their share of the responsibility and workload. A team needs balance.”

Italy are leading Group Five by four points over Norway and Slovenia, while their next opponents Scotland are in penultimate place. The Hampden Park crowd will nonetheless turn this arena into a pressure cooker for the Azzurri.

“We are relaxed and accustomed to the atmosphere in these games, as we showed when we went to Dublin and won 2-1 last month,” assured the former Juventus Coach. “This side is capable of achieving a great deal.”

Dizzy Vieri to face Scots

Football Italia

Christian Vieri will be available for Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Scotland despite being affected by dizziness in training. There were doubts over the 32-year-old’s health after he complained of feeling unwell during a practice game on Thursday.

The Milan striker, who left city rivals Inter on a free transfer in the summer, immediately underwent tests at Coverciano. Medics declared the forward fit for the Scottish trip after being given the all clear in the hot Florence sun.

"It was just a momentary disturbance, down to bad digestion," stated medic Enrico Castellacci. "The player is available for the game."

The much-travelled forward is expected to start the qualifier alongside club colleague Alberto Gilardino in attack. The pair will be supported by Roma captain Francesco Totti on his return to the international scene. Lazio veteran Angelo Peruzzi should be handed the gloves in the absence of injured No 1 Gigi Buffon.

Palermo’s former Under-21 international Christian Zaccardo is set to start in defence on the right. The only doubt seems to regard whether boss Marcello Lippi will opt for Mauro Camoranesi or Daniele De Rossi in midfield. The Azzurri, who top their group by four points, will fly out to Glasgow from Pisa airport on Friday morning.

Italy probable: Peruzzi; Zaccardo, Nesta, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Pirlo, Gattuso, Camoranesi (De Rossi); Totti; Gilardino, Vieri

Pirlo demands Azzurri victory

Football Italia

Andrea Pirlo believes that Italy’s World Cup qualifier against Scotland on Saturday is a must win game. The Azzurri fly out to Glasgow later this morning hoping to at least maintain their four point advantage at the top of the table.

"The match against the Scots is key," said the Milan playmaker. "It will be fundamental for us to get a good result ahead of Wednesday’s match against Belarus. We want to win them both."

The Brescia-born star is an irreplaceable figure for the Rossoneri and he is now an untouchable in Marcello Lippi’s national plans.

"I am happy to have won the faith of the Coach and happy to be playing where I am," continued the former Under-21 international captain. "To feel that others have confidence in you is important, especially when wearing the national shirt. This is something that I am proud of."

Pirlo will sit just in front of the defence on Saturday, with the task of orchestrating the side’s play from a deep midfield position. Scotland will be aware of the former Inter man’s ability after he netted two free-kicks in the 2-0 win at the San Siro last season.

U-21: Three off in Scots thriller

Football Italia

Claudio Gentile’s Azzurrini were forced to fight back twice against a plucky Scots side in a 2-2 European Championship draw that saw three players sent off.

The home side was immediately aggressive and wasted an early opportunity with Duffy and Diamond’s header, while Italy were forced into a substitution as Andrea Lazzari replaced the injured Rolando Bianchi. This further weakened a squad already missing the suspended Giampaolo Pazzini of Fiorentina.

Simone Pepe was the most dangerous for the Azzurrini, his powerful header on Alessandro Rosina’s free kick, but Scotland took the lead in first half stoppages. Diamond rose to nod in Duffy’s corner kick and Alessandro Potenza allowed him far too much room.

Substitute Lazzari managed to draw the visitors level early into the second half, getting on to the end of an inch-perfect Aquilani pass over the defence. Soon after, Gallagher found himself in a promising position only to fire straight at Potenza, then Cesare Bovo thumped the frame of the goal for the Italians.

Surprisingly, the Scots restored their lead 16 minutes from time. After wasting a couple of good opportunities, Gallagher finally hit the back of the net by completing Wilson’s counter-attack at the near post. It didn’t last long, as moments later Palermo-owned Pepe drew the Azzurrini level, touching on Marco Motta’s header to ensure it reached its target.

A scuffle broke out between Motta and Marshall with both men sent off in a fiery finale, soon followed by goalscorer Pepe for his second bookable offence. Felice Piccolo performed two crucial interventions to rescue goalkeeper Gianluca Curci as they struggled on in nine men, but the points are shared in this European Under-21 Championship qualifier.

The Azzurrini continue to lead their Group with a five-point gap from Norway, who also drew away to Slovenia. Their next test is on Tuesday in Belarus.
