Zalayeta offered for Zanetti

Football Italia

Juventus are set to offer Inter the services of Marcelo Zalayeta in an effort to land Cristiano Zanetti. The latter is known to be a target for the Bianconeri after working with boss Fabio Capello at Roma in the past. Zanetti has been linked with the Turin giants for some time who seem to be looking for a new central midfielder.

Although Patrick Vieira and Giuliano Giannichedda have replaced Stephen Appiah and Alessio Tacchinardi this summer, there could be more changes to the Old Lady’s squad. It is already believed that the champions have offered Fabrizio Miccoli to the San Siro outfit in return for Zanetti.

But it now seems that the Stadio Delle Alpi side are ready to sacrifice Zalayeta as the Nerazzurri continue to look for a new striker. Boss Roberto Mancini is still one forward short after the departure of Christian Vieri to Milan this summer.

Zanetti’s proposed move to Juventus could still be on as the former Fiorentina player didn’t play in the Champions League last night.

Buffon Eyes Italian Supercup

Goal.com

The Italian international keeper has set his sights on the first trophy of the season. Juventus’ season starts on the 20th of August when the Bianconeri face Inter in the Italian Supercup for the first official title of the season. Gigi Buffon sees this trophy as an important one, both for him and the squad.

“We must be at our top for the Supercup. If we win, it would be a confirmation, while if Inter win, they would find in that success, more motivation to do well also in Serie A. I would love to win the Supercup: up till now I have won all three games I have played and I would like to continue on this path."

According to Buffon, the Bianconeri are still the team to beat. “A champion like Vieira arrived, who is a world class athlete, able to make the difference. We also have various alternatives of value, players who would be regulars anywhere else: in my opinion we are still strong.”

Del Piero set for Azzurri recall

Football Italia

Juventus’ Alessandro Del Piero looks likely to be included in Italy’s squad for next week’s friendly against the Republic of Ireland. The club captain hasn’t appeared for the national side in the past 11 months, but whispers suggest he will be selected for Wednesday’s Dublin test.

Boss Marcello Lippi is understood to have been impressed with Del Piero’s pre-season form, he netted twice against Roma in midweek, and his name is expected to be in Sunday’s squad list. Del Piero will be eager to prove a point to his former Bianconeri Coach after becoming a fringe player over the last year for his country.

The attacker has only played in one of Lippi’s 12 games in charge, back on September 8 when he netted the only goal of the game in Moldova. Del Piero has openly admitted that he wants to be a part of the 2006 World Cup squad but he faces a tough battle.

Lippi hasn’t hidden his admiration for the Roma duo of Antonio Cassano and Francesco Totti, players who could cost Del Piero his place in Germany. The tactician is expected to select a ‘strong’ squad for the Ireland game, including Christian Vieri of Milan and Fiorentina’s Luca Toni.

Palermo’s Fabio Grosso should also get the call as Juventus’ reserve left-back Giorgio Chiellini is unavailable after fracturing his nose. Udinese goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis and shot-stopper Flavio Roma of Monaco are being tipped to join first choice ‘keeper Gigi Buffon on the trip.

France call Juve quartet

Football Italia

Juventus stars Lilian Thuram, Jonathan Zebina, Patrick Vieira and David Trezeguet have been named in France’s squad for the Ivory Coast friendly. Coach Raymond Domenech has selected a 21-man group for Wednesday’s test, which includes Thuram, Zinedine Zidane and Claude Makelele following their return from international retirement.

Trezeguet has been called up despite being suspended from Les Blues’ next two World Cup qualifiers. There was further good news for the striker after he was also declared fit to play in Friday’s Birra Moretti tournament. Juve will face hosts Napoli and Inter in a three-team triangular event, with games lasting for 45 minutes.

Trezeguet had been suffering with an ankle problem since Monday but he has reacted well to treatment.

Meanwhile, Luis Figo could make his debut for Inter in the competition following his Real Madrid switch. The Portuguese winger has been selected in Roberto Mancini’s 29-man party for the San Paolo trip. Fellow former Real teammate Walter Samuel could also do the same after he only sat on the bench for last night’s 2-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.

Juventus squad: Buffon, Kovac, Pessotto, Emerson, Ibrahimovic, Del Piero, Nedved, Chimenti, Camoranesi, Trezeguet, Mutu, Zambrotta, Blasi, Thuram, Bonnefoi, Giannichedda, Olivera, Zalayeta, Zebina, Cannavaro.

Inter squad: Bindi, Carini, Ciceri, Julio Cesar, Toldo; Arrieta, Cordoba, Favalli, Materazzi, Samuel, Wome, J. Zanetti , Ze' Maria; Cambiasso, Figo, Maa Boumsong, Karagounis, Kily Gonzalez, Pizarro, Solari, Stankovic, Veron, C.Zanetti; Adriano, Choutos, Cruz, Martins, Momente', Recoba

Capello rejects Cassano option

Football Italia

Boss Fabio Capello has become the latest Juventus element to rule out a move for Antonio Cassano of Roma. The youngster has been linked with the Turin giants seeing as his contract expires in the summer of 2006. But Capello, who has worked with the talent in the past at the Stadio Olimpico, insists the attacker won’t be heading north.

"Cassano is doing well at Roma and he is happy with the Giallorossi," the Coach said after last night’s draw between the two sides. Capital boss Luciano Spalletti was also quick to underline his intention to keep the enigma. "He can still improve but we believe in him here," he stated.

Turning to the 2-2 friendly draw, Capello maintained that he knew his men would struggle against his former club.

"My side showed the effects of yesterday’s tough day in training," he said. "Some of my players are in good form, others are still looking for it. But it was a good test in preparation for the championship against a side who I like the look of.

"I’m sure that we will be ready for when the season starts properly."

Spalletti, whose team looked as if they would win until a late Alex Del Piero penalty, was also smiling after the game. "I’m happy as we played with desire and defended as a unit," he noted. "It was a good and intense game. We were up against an opponent who have shown themselves to be in good form already."

The former Udinese boss was also quizzed on possible new arrivals given that the club’s transfer ban has now been lifted. "There are a few things to adjust," he commented. "We are short of options in certain areas but my players this evening proved to me that I can count on them."

Juventus open AS Roma talks over Panucci

Tribal Football

Juventus are in talks with AS Roma over several of their players - with the prime target being veteran fullback Christian Panucci. Juve coach Fabio Capello wants to bring Panucci to Turin as a replacement for the injured Alessandro Birindelli. He has no recognised right-back to cover for Birindelli's loss and would prefer to be able to call on Panucci than play Jonathan Zebina out of position.

Panucci is keen on the move, having worked with Capello at Roma, AC Milan and Real Madrid, but Roma coach Luciano Spalletti is wary of losing a player of his experience.

Top duo pursue Oddo

Sky Sports

Massimo Oddo is reportedly being tracked by Juventus and Milan. The Lazio defender is high on the list of priorities at both Serie A giants, who are jostling for his signature. Juve need to replace Alessandro Birindelli after he was ruled out for at least three months with the ligament injury he suffered in the friendly against Benfica.

The Bianconeri are also known to be considering Benfica's Miguel for the role but the player is in dispute with his Lisbon employers and Fifa are not due to make a decision on his situation until August 18. Milan are also great admirers of Oddo and would mount a rival bid.

Juventus to sign Torino's Mantovani for Chievo

Tribal Football

Torino defender Andrea Mantovani is interesting Chievo Verona. Mantovani, 21, is leaving Torino after the club was refused their Serie A status this week over financial concerns. Juventus are set to sign the defender and immediately loan him to Chievo for the coming season.

Monaco Chasing Cavenaghi

Goal.com

Monaco have apparently failed to lure Milan Baros and are now ready to bid for the former River Plate starlet. Transferred in Russia just one year ago, the Argentina international wants to join a more posh championship. He had been approached by Marseille on July but the deal finally collapsed.

Futhermore the Spartak striker holds an Italian passport, something that interests a lot the ASM who have already reached the maximum of non-European players. The French club could offer 10 millions of euros.

Juventus And Roma Looking At Miccoli And Mancini Swap

Goal.com

Now that Roma’s transfer has been lifted, reports suggest that Brazilian wingback Mancini may be on his way to Juventus. Juventus have already held discussions with the player’s representatives and are prepared to deal off Fabrizio Miccoli in a part-exchange.

Juventus are very interested in Mancini and are ready to proceed in dealing for the player ahead of other targets which include Benfica’s Miguel and Lazio’s Massimo Oddo. Miccoli on the other hand would seem to be a welcome addition to Roma, a club who are seeking more attacking options including Cagliari’s talented winger Mauro Esposito.

Del Piero seals Roma thriller

Football Italia

Fabio Capello faced his former club and Alex Del Piero bagged a brace in an entertaining friendly encounter between Juve and Roma.

Meetings between these two clubs have always been fraught affairs and that rivalry intensified last year when Coach Capello, Emerson and Jonathan Zebina moved to Turin. With reports that they are set to be joined by Antonio Cassano, the tension got to some fans and police had to quell troublemakers who were throwing missiles.

The match was played at Pescara’s Stadio Adriatico and Alessandro Del Piero – who was left on the bench for last week’s 2-0 victory at Benfica – opened the scoring with a curling right-foot shot at the near post. Cristian Chivu confirmed that he is past his injury worries with a diving header on Francesco Totti’s free kick to draw the Giallorossi level.

Luciano Spalletti’s men even managed to turn the game around completely in the second half, new signing Rodrigo Taddei turning in another assist from captain Totti. However, deep into stoppages, Del Piero was brought down and stepped up to convert the decisive penalty himself, as it ends 2-2.

Juventus are warming up for Sunday’s Italian Supercup clash with Inter, while Roma were celebrating the temporary lifting of their transfer embargo.

Trez out of Ivory Coast clash

Football Italia

Juventus striker David Trezeguet is set to miss France's friendly with the Ivory Coast on August 17 after injuring his right ankle. It is not known exactly how long the 27-year-old will be unavailable for, but it is highly unlikely that Les Bleus boss Raymond Domenech will take the risk.

The former Monaco frontman is suspended for France's upcoming qualifiers against the Faroe Islands and Ireland after being sent off during the 1-1 draw with Israel in March, and Domenech is sure to experiment with players he will have at his disposition.

The squad will be announced on Thursday, with former stars Zinedine Zidane, Claude Makelele and Juve stopper Lilian Thuram set to make their return from international retirement.

Juve rule out Cassano swoop

Football Italia

Juventus transfer guru Luciano Moggi has rejected claims that the club are interested in Antonio Cassano. Roma were today informed that their appeal against a FIFA transfer ban was successful, allowing them to register new players again.

This was thought to have reignited Juventus’ interest in the striker as they were keen to offer the Giallorossi a player plus cash deal. However, Moggi remained coy when he was told of Roma’s situation.

“Good for them, the TAS’ judgement will allow them to operate in the market – as it should be,” he stated. “The suspension of the ban is a good decision, but it does not mean that Cassano is now in our plans. It’s useless to insist on this, you’re wasting your time."

In other transfer news, Dejan Stankovic has insisted that Luis Figo’s arrival at Inter does not mean he will leave the San Siro. Stankovic finds himself in direct competition with Figo for a spot on the right side of midfield.

“Good competition for every place on the pitch is more than welcome,” the Serbia and Montenegro star insisted. “During all the summer friendlies I have played in my favourite position on the right flank, but we will see what happens with Figo in the team.”

Birindelli injury blow

Football Italia

Juventus have been rocked by the news that Alessandro Birindelli is out for the next six months. The 30-year-old, who has spent the past few seasons as a back-up player, suffered a knee injury against Benfica on Saturday.

Tests have shown that he has damaged ligaments in his right knee and he will be forced to wear a cast for a fortnight before it can be operated on. Juventus Coach Fabio Capello already has enough injury concerns ahead of the new season, but he would not be drawn into revealing any potential replacements.

“We will have to evaluate the situation before taking any decision,” said the tactician.

The situation could lead to the Bianconeri speeding up their move for Miguel. The Portuguese defender is currently at the centre of a transfer row with Benfica. He insists his contract has expired, but the club maintains there is another year left to run and FIFA are arbitrating on the matter.

It has also been reported that David Trezeguet pulled out of training today with an ankle complaint. Capello will be hoping that it is not serious after the French international missed much of last season through injury.

More Injury Problems For Juventus

Goal.com

Trezeguet is that latest player to be added to the Bianconeri’s preseason injury list. More bad news for Fabio Capello from the Juventus infirmary, as David Trezeguet will be out for the next days after spraining his ankle in a collision with team-mate Lilian Thuram during a training session.

However the Juve coach does not seem worried about the French hitman’s condition, despite the fact that the player will miss Tuesday night’s high-profile friendly match against Roma. "Trezeguet has a light sprain to his knee, nothing to worry about, but he will not take part in the match against Roma," reassured Fabio Capello.

Juventus will also be without Birindelli, Miccoli, Camoranesi and Chiellini against Roma. It is still unclear whether Trezeguet will be available for the Supercup final against Inter in program on the 20th of August.

Capello To Make Changes Against Roma

Goal.com

Del Piero is expected to start in attack. Fabio Capello will make some changes in tonight’s friendly match against Roma. The Juventus coach is expected to field Alessandro Del Piero alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic following the injury of David Trezeguet.

However, the Bianconeri’s mentor was quick to point out that he would have still made some changes even if Trezeguet had not been injured.

“Independently from David’s (Trezeguet) injury, I would still have changed the attacking duo that played in Lisbon. Against Roma I will change something; they are a squad which is on our same level of preparation. Roma is however a good team, with players of high quality."

Juventus rejects Villa approach for Tudor

Tribal Football

Juventus have rejected an approach from Aston Villa for defender Igor Tudor. Villa boss David O'Leary was hoping to bring the Croatia international to Villa Park, but received little encouragement from Juve. Juve want to use Tudor as a makeweight in a potential swap deal for AS Roma star Antonio Cassano.

Juventus offer Tudor for Inter Milan's Zanetti

Tribal Football

Juventus are willing to offer defender Igor Tudor to Inter Milan for midfielder Cristiano Zanetti. Italy international Zanetti remains Juve coach Fabio Capello's prime transfer target for the remaining days of the summer market. Zanetti is inside the final year of his Inter contract and is keen on rejoining his former Roma coach at Juve.

Inter coach Roberto Mancini likes the idea of having Tudor to call on, particularly after missing out on Benfica stopper Luisao this summer.

Messina in Juventus talks over deal for Genoa's Milito

Tribal Football

Messina have expressed interest for Genoa striker Diego Milito. It's understood Juventus already have first refusal on the Argentine thanks to director general Luciano Moggi's good relationship with Genoa president Enrico Preziosi. Should Genoa's relegation to Serie C1 stand, Milito will have to be sold and Messina are in talks with Juve about taking the striker on-loan once the Serie A champs sign the player outright.

AC Milan in shock approach for AS Roma ace Cassano

Tribal Football

AC Milan have expressed interest in AS Roma striker Antonio Cassano. Despite the arrivals of Christian Vieri and Alberto Gilardino this summer, Milan have approached Roma for the 22 year-old firebrand, who is inside the final year of his present deal.

Milan are offering Roma goalkeeper Christian Abbiati in part exchange for Cassano, who can be signed for £10 million as time ticks away for the capital club to make money on his sale before he can sign a pre-contract in January.

If the Tas panel overturns Roma's transfer ban, Milan are expected to make their move for Cassano, who is also the subject of interest from Chelsea.

Injury crisis strikes Juve

Football Italia

Just one week away from the Italian Supercup clash with Inter, the Bianconeri could be without Alessandro Birindelli, Giorgio Chiellini and Jonathan Zebina.

Former Fiorentina full-back Chiellini lasted only five minutes of last night’s 2-0 friendly win at Benfica, as he was stretchered off with a suspected fractured nose following a collision with Alex. His replacement was Birindelli and he was also carried away from the pitch after spraining his right knee. More tests are needed to know how long he’ll be out for, but there are reports the ligaments have been damaged.

Zebina did not even fly out to Portugal for this prestigious test due to an injury, while Gianluca Zambrotta was left on the sidelines with a cut to his foot. Muscular problems have also hit Robert Kovac, while Igor Tudor is thought to be on the verge of a move to Supercup opponents Inter in exchange for Cristiano Zanetti.

This leaves Coach Fabio Capello with precious few alternatives in defence, though Zambrotta is set to recover in time for next Sunday’s showdown at the Stadio Delle Alpi.

The situation could further push Juve to move for Miguel, the young defender who is currently at the centre of a transfer row with Benfica. The player insists his contract has expired, but the club maintains there is another year left to run and FIFA are arbitrating on the matter.

“We played a great first half, even if we clearly don’t have full match fitness yet,” said Capello after the 2-0 victory in Lisbon. “I saw a lot of effort and quality, while tactically are movements are coming together and even Emerson is starting to find his form. It was a tough test and we’ll be ready for the Italian Supercup.”

The Italian Supercup is Serie A’s version of the Charity Shield between Scudetto winners Juventus and Coppa Italia holders Inter.

Thuram couldn't resist Bleus call

Football Italia

Lilian Thuram has confirmed his return to the international stage and believes it won’t damage his club career.

“It is true that I am coming out of international retirement,” stated the Frenchman on the official Juventus website. “Coach Raymond Domenech had asked me to return many times, but I always turned him down. This time he pointed out it was his duty to call the best and create a great squad. At that stage, I couldn’t say no.”

The Juventus defender is in the squad for the August 17 friendly encounter with the Ivory Coast, to be played in Montpellier.

“It is true that I will be very busy and have a lot more games to play, but I have done that for my entire career. I wasn’t sure I wanted to return and was rather ‘pushed’ by this call-up, but I thought about it and understood the Coach is just doing his job. The French side has given me so much in my career and I want to give something back.”

Thuram is not the only veteran to change his mind, as former Juve man Zinedine Zidane has also returned to the international stage. However, at the age of 33, he admits this will put a strain on his physique.

“Last year I didn’t take part in the World Cup qualifiers and football seemed like a different sport to me,” revealed the former Parma defender. “I had a lot more time to rest and therefore the chance to recover and regroup in a relaxed atmosphere.”

Messina move for Milito?

Football Italia

There are reports that Juventus will sign Genoa hitman Diego Milito and immediately loan him out to Messina. The Argentine striker is hot property on the transfer market following his 21 goals to earn promotion from Serie B last season. However, he will demand to be sold this summer if Genoa’s appeal against the match-fixing penalty is rejected and the club demoted to Serie C1.

Inter and Milan are also interested in Milito, but it appears that Juve have the upper hand with the offer of regular first team football at Messina for his first top flight term. In turn, the Sicilians could release Riccardo Zampagna into the hands of Sampdoria.

Meanwhile, there are also claims in the Gazzetta dello Sport that Juventus have not given up on the idea of capturing Antonio Cassano. The Italian international’s contract expires in 2006 and renegotiations have hit a major stumbling block. It’s even rumoured he could be frozen out of the squad if he refuses to pen an extended deal, but Roma can only sell him for £13m cash due to FIFA’s transfer embargo on signing new players.

It was suggested that Chelsea would come in with a £11m bid, but Cassano has made it clear he wishes to be reunited with Coach Fabio Capello in Turin. There will be a friendly match between Roma and Juventus on August 9 and it could be the right time for the Bianconeri to offer him a three-year contract worth £2.7m per season.

Juventus coach plays down talk for Benfica's Miguel

Tribal Football

Juventus coach Fabio Capello was non-committal when asked about their interest for Benfica fullback Miguel. "Miguel? We are have players who play in his position," said Capello. "I have seen Miguel only play in the national team, in the European Championships. I only want to speak about the players who I have at my disposition."

Juventus begin Ibrahimovic talks over bumper contract

Tribal Football

Juventus have opened talks with the agent of striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic over a new, long-term contract.

The Swede's agent, Mino Raiola, met with Juve officials last Friday to begin negotiations on a five-year contract, which is likely to be worth £15 million. The deal will rise from being worth £2 million in the first year through to £3.5 million in the fifth.

A percentage of image rights is also being discussed between the two parties with Ibrahimovic's No9 shirt proving a huge seller around the world. The terms being offered still falls short of the £4 million-a-year Juve's biggest earners, Pavel Nedved, Patrick Vieira and Gigi Buffon enjoy.

Juventus chief makes offer to Benfica's Miguel

Tribal Football

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi has made an offer for Benfica fullback Miguel. Moggi met with Miguel's agent in Italy last week and tabled a four-year deal worth £1.4 million-a-year. An offer to Benfica is also on the table with an initial 12-month loan for £500,000 with the view to a permanent transfer worth £6 million.

However, it's emerged Juve face stiff competition from two European rivals for Miguel. Valencia are offering £7 million for the right-back, while Dynamo Moscow have informed Benfica they're willing to pay £8 million for his permanent transfer. In Juve's favour is that Miguel is insisting on a move to Italy.

Tribal Football

Ibra breaks down Benfica

Football Italia

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and David Trezeguet crushed Benfica in Portugal, while Inter, Udinese and Torino were also in action. Juventus travelled to Lisbon and gave new Coach Ronald Koeman a wake-up call with their dominant performance despite injury woes. Robert Kovac, Gianluca Zambrotta and Jonathan Zebina were already out of action before Giorgio Chiellini and Alessandro Birindelli limped off during the match.

Alessandro Del Piero was left on the bench in favour of the dual centre-forwards and the tactic worked as they bagged a goal apiece. Ibrahimovic opened the scoring with a fierce left-foot strike from distance and then rolled the ball across for Trezeguet’s tap-in. Gianluigi Buffon preserved the scoreline with a couple of fantastic saves on Geovanni and proved he is back on form.

Inter were also in action this evening and hammered Serie C side Lecco 4-0 thanks to an Adriano penalty for a foul on Obafemi Martins, the Nigerian netting the second himself with a splendid solo effort, while Ze Maria and Alvaro Recoba rounded out the scoreline.

Juve to reward Zlatan

Sky Sports

Reports in Italy are indicating that Juventus are looking to open talks with Zlatan Ibrahimovic over a new contract for the Swedish star. The Serie A champions have just tied Gianluca Zambrotta down to a new deal and are now ready to find an accord with their talented hit-man as well.

Since his arrival from Ajax last summer Ibrahimovic has been in impressive form for The Bianconeri and they are now looking to reward his efforts by extending his agreement until 2010. Coach Fabio Capello has already voiced his belief that the Swedish international is a future European Footballer of the Year, and would be loath to lose the gifted forward.

Ibrahimovic's current deal expires in 2008 although talks will be held in the next few days and it is anticipated that a trouble-free accord should result.

Zambrotta extends until 2010

Football Italia

Gianluca Zambrotta has committed his future to Juventus by extending his contract with the club until 2010. The left-back has been linked with a move to Chelsea and Inter recently, but he has now added another two years on to his previous Turin agreement.

The former right-sided midfielder is widely regarded as one of the best players in Italy for both club and country. The international star joined the Turin giants in the summer of 1999 after the Bianconeri paid Bari £7m.

Zambrotta has since won three League titles in 2002, 2003 and 2005, plus two Italian Super Cups in 2002 and 2003. The 28-year-old will next be in action on Saturday night when the Italian club take on Benfica in a Lisbon friendly.

Juve squad: Buffon, Birindelli, Chiellini, Vieira, Pessotto, Emerson, Ibrahimovic, Del Piero, Nedved, Chimenti, Camoranesi, Trezeguet, Mutu, Zambrotta, Blasi, Thuram, Giannichedda, Olivera, Zalayeta, Cannavaro.

Capello coy on Miguel

Sky Sports

Juventus coach Fabio Capello has denied reports that he is looking to add Portugal international Miguel to his squad. The full back is currently locked in a dispute with his club Benfica and has been linked with a switch to Juventus.

But Capello has tried to play down any interest in Miguel, despite Italian sources affirming Juve want to sign the right back. "We are complete in this way," said Capello, "and you know I only talk about the players I have at my disposal."

Juventus play Benfica in a friendly in Lisbon on Saturday and this has prompted talk that the Italian champions will use the match to discuss Miguel's situation. Miguel claims he is a free agent due to an error in his contract, something which Benfica contradict, and the case is due to be decided by Fifa.

In an attempt to resolve the wrangle, reports suggest that Juve will offer to sign Miguel on a season-long loan for a fee of €750,000. The Old Lady will then turn that into a permanent arrangement if Miguel proves to be a success at Stadio Delle Alpi.

Valencia are also keen on the right back and, while Capello has dismissed the notion of a bid for the player, speculation persists to the contrary.

Capello confirms Thuram U-turn

Football Italia

Juventus boss Fabio Capello has revealed that Lilian Thuram will return to international football with France. The defender has been heavily tipped to come out of Les Bleus retirement after Zinedine Zidane and Claude Makelele made the same move this week.

Thuram, who quit after Euro 2004, is now expected to make his comeback to the side for the August 17 friendly against the Ivory Coast. "Lilian Thuram has been selected. We received a letter this morning regarding a call-up for the Montpellier game," said Capello.

However, the master tactician seems to be far from happy with the situation, fearing it may affect the Bianconeri’s hopes of Scudetto and Champions League glory.

"It is very satisfying for the player himself but I fear that he could be over-used during the season," continued the Coach. "I wouldn’t want the player, given his age and the amount of games he will play, to be affected physically in such a long campaign."

The 33-year-old is currently France's second-most capped player having made 103 appearances, level with former skipper Didier Deschamps and 13 behind record-holder Marcel Desailly. The former Monaco and Parma right-back memorably catapulted France into the 1998 World Cup Final by scoring both goals in the 2-1 semi-final victory over Croatia - still his only international goals.

He will be joined in the French squad later this month by his Juventus colleagues Jonathan Zebina, Patrick Vieira and David Trezeguet.

Thuram silent over French return

Football Italia

Juventus defender Lillian Thuram has refused to confirm an imminent return to international football, suggesting Zinedine Zidane had spoken out of turn. Having just announced his own return from self-imposed international exile, Zidane claimed there was "no doubt" Thuram would also be reintegrating himself into the France set-up.

But a seemingly irritated Thuram did not appreciate his new spokesmen’s declarations. "Honestly, there’s nothing to say," said the stopper on French radio. "It’s not a decision I’ve made or haven’t made, there’s really just nothing to say. Obviously you just need to ask Zizou!"

Thuram, 33, announced his international retirement just over a year ago after a disappointing Euro 2004. However, following an excellent season for Italian champions Juve, Thuram is still expected to confirm his availability for France’s friendly match with the Ivory Coast on August 17.

Inter Milan demand Juventus signing Giannachedda for Zanetti

Tribal Football

Inter Milan have informed Juventus they're prepared to sell them midfielder Cristiano Zanetti. Italy international Zanetti is wanted by coach Fabio Capello as backup to his prime midfield combination of Emerson and Patrick Vieira.

After weeks of haggling between the club's powerbrokers, Inter are now ready to release Zanetti - but only in a straight swap for Juve's summer signing, Guiliano Giannichedda. Giannichedda joined Juve at the end of last season on a Bosman and is a favourite of Inter coach Roberto Mancini.

Tudor in Stuttgart link

Football Italia

German giants Stuttgart will reportedly make a bid to sign Juventus defender Igor Tudor. The Croatian, who can also play in midfield, is set for an exit after failing to impose himself in the plans of boss Fabio Capello. The 27-year-old, who spent part of last term on loan at Siena, has already been linked with moves to Middlesbrough and Udinese.

Former Juventus and new Stuttgart boss Giovanni Trapattoni is keen on adding the versatile player to his squad. The Bianconeri are ready to do business and are looking for a fee of close to £3.5m for the former Hadjuk Split man.

Tudor joined the Stadio Delle Alpi outfit in the summer of 1998 and has been a useful addition even if he’s been affected by injury. Stuttgart have already gone shopping in Serie A this summer after signing Danish forward Jon Dahl Tomasson from Milan.

Italian Supercup date set

Football Italia

The Italian Supercup between Juventus and Inter will be played at the Stadio Delle Alpi on August 20, announced the FIGC today. This trophy is the Italian version of the Charity Shield and every year kicks off the new season with a challenge between the Scudetto holders and the Coppa Italia winners.

Juventus conquered the title and the Nerazzurri lifted the Coppa in May, but their record in this competition differs wildly. Inter have only ever won one Supercoppa, while the Bianconeri have already triumphed four times.

The game is traditionally played in the home stadium of the Scudetto winners, so the Delle Alpi will host on August 20 with a 9pm local time kick-off – 8pm in the UK. This match could well represent the Inter debut of new signing Luis Figo, as he was not on the list of players eligible for the Champions' League preliminary round.
