Buffon: Moggi Will Surprise Us

Goal.com

The Juventus goalkeeper is convinced that the Bianconeri’s General Director has an ace up his sleeve. Gianluigi Buffon spoke about the Juventus transfer market, despite the club’s officials saying there will be no big signings.

“To make the quality jump we just need a couple of insertions. I expect a big transfer, but I wouldn’t know which. Luciano Moggi can surprise us at any moment.”

Buffon explained the Bianconeri’s unexpected quarterfinal exit from this year’s Champions League and which team he fears most next season. “This year in the Champions League we lacked the right conviction. Next season Inter will be a tough opponent.”

Trez certain of Juve stay

Football Italia

David Trezeguet has shot down reports that Juventus will cash in on him during the summer. Whispers have suggested that the player could be sacrificed to help finance a move for either Roma’s Antonio Cassano or Alberto Gilardino of Parma.

But the former Monaco ace, who has endured an injury plagued campaign at the Delle Alpi this term, insists his future is black and white.

"I want to remain at this club in order to win the Champions’ League," he stated. "I’m staying, staying, staying. All these voices surrounding my future are rubbish. There are no discussions to sell me, it’s only you journalists who believe otherwise."

Trezeguet signed a new contract with the Bianconeri last summer and he insists he wants to win more silverware in Turin.

"Juventus are the best there is," he continued. "Why should I leave? I’m thinking about the European Cup. We were a little unfortunate this season and we need to give that little bit extra in the next campaign. However, I’m sure that the club will look to build an even stronger squad, more competitive than the current group."

One of those new additions could be Andrea Barzagli, an Italian central defender who is excelling at Palermo. "I’m hearing voices about Juventus’ interest in me but they are not necessarily true," stated the 24-year-old stopper. "Would I like to join a big club? I’m already at a big club – I play for Palermo!"

Juve transfer chief Luciano Moggi is also giving little away in stories that the club want to sign Reggina playmaker Mozart. "We like Mozart," he admitted. "However, we also like Beethoven…"

Italy 1-1 Serbia & Montenegro

Football Italia

Cristiano Lucarelli scored on his international debut as 10-man Italy drew 1-1 with Serbia and Montenegro. The Livorno striker, Serie A’s top scorer, came off the bench to net the Azzurri a late equaliser in Toronto, after Manuele Blasi was dismissed in the first half of what should have been a friendly.

Boss Marcello Lippi fielded another experimental line-up, with a host of his best players left behind in the peninsula after a long hard season. That inevitably saw the Italians take longer to settle against a Serbia side whose players were showing greater technical ability.

Lecce striker Mirko Vucinic set up the first chance of the game but Zigic’s shot on 12 minutes was comfortably handled by Angelo Peruzzi in the Italian goal. The Lazio ‘keeper then stopped a Vucinic effort, after the youngster controlled a Vukcevic cross.

The Azzurri were clearly struggling, after only landing in Canada 24 hours previously, and it was no surprise when Serbia took the lead on 25 minutes. Zigic was found by Vukcevic to coolly slot past Peruzzi to make it 1-0.

Things went from bad to worse soon after when Blasi saw red. The Juventus midfielder, who was also booked early on, was dismissed for a kick on Vukcevic. That forced Lippi to bring off the attacking Mauro Esposito and sacrifice him for Giandomenico Mesto – who became the first Reggina player to appear for La Nazionale.

Italy risked going two down when Peruzzi said no to Vucinic before they created their first real chance in injury time. A splendid Oddo free-kick found the head of Zaccardo, but the Palermo defender’s effort sailed just over the bar.

Lippi made a host of changes after the half-time oranges, bringing on Grosso, Coppola and Lucarelli. The latter made an instant impact when he tested ‘keeper Kovacevic with a 52nd minute drive from outside of the area.

Yet it was Italy’s No 1 who was called into action next to deny Vukcevic. Peruzzi was then left thanking the post on 70 minutes after Zigic was unfortunate to not make it 2-0. Italy were by now desperately seeking an equaliser and almost did with Barone but his shot was parried.

Udinese’s David Di Michele had a golden opportunity on 75 minutes but his diagonal effort was superbly saved. The goal finally arrived in the 83rd minute. Grosso entered the penalty area on the left to deliver a perfect cross for Lucarelli to divert into the goal.

Italy end their North American tour on Saturday against Ecuador in New York.

Italy: Peruzzi; Oddo (Grosso 46), Zaccardo, Barzagli, Chiellini (Brienza 64); Esposito (Mesto 35), Barone, Blasi, Mauri (Coppola 46); Toni (C. Lucarelli 46), Iaquinta (Di Michele 67).

Serbia: Kovacevic; Djordjevic (Koroman 81), Dudic, Basa (Ivanovic 77); Rncic, Maric, Brnovic, Mladenovic (Trajkovic 57); Vukcevic; Zigic, Vucinic (Jestrovic 81).

Juve composing Mozart deal

Sky Sports

Serie A champions Juventus are reportedly close to completing a deal for Reggina captain Mozart. Bianconeri general manager Luciano Moggi is expected to meet Reggina president Lillo Foti in the coming days to hammer out a deal for the Brazilian.

Mozart was an impressive figure as Reggina hung onto their Serie A status this term, and Foti has previously confirmed that the Turin outfit are looking to sign the gifted midfielder. With the player also willing to make the switch to Stadio Delle Alpi the only outstanding issue would seem to be a potential part exchange.

Reggina are believed to be interested in a loan deal for either Marcelo Zalayeta or Manuele Blasi, although it remains to be seen whether either player would be keen on spending a spell at Stadio Oreste Granillo. Should Mozart complete the proposed switch Juve boss Fabio Capello will boast a wealth of options in midfield after already adding Giuliano Giannichedda to his title winning side.

Palermo's Barzagli aware of Juventus interest

Tribal Football

Palermo stopper Andrea Barzagli has played down talk of a summer switch to Juventus. "I'm hearing voices about Juventus' interest in me but they are not necessarily true," said Barzagli. "Would I like to join a big club? I'm already at a big club - I play for Palermo!"

Corvino: Fiorentina want to keep Juventus loan players

Tribal Football

After being confirmed as Fiorentina's new director general yesterday, Pantaleo Corvino revealed he would be seeking immediate talks with Juventus over their loan players. Fiorentina had Juve trio Enzo Maresca, Fabrizio Miccoli and Giorgio Chiellini all on-loan last season and want to hold onto them for the new campaign.

"We will ask all the clubs that have co-ownership agreements with us to renew them all for another year," confirmed Corvino.

Barcelona offer £5M for Villarreal's Rodriguez

Tribal Football

Barcelona have made a bid for Villarreal fullback Gonzalo Rodriguez. The Argentine youngster has only been at Villarreal for 12 months, but was a major influence on their Champions League qualification last season and also has caught the eye of Juventus. Barca have tabled a £5 million offer to Villarreal for Rodriguez.

Juventus end tour with win

Football Italia

Juventus have concluded their end of season tour of Japan with a 4-1 victory over FC Tokyo. The home side did actually take the lead after just 10 minutes through Toda, but were unable to contain a rampant second half display by the Italians.

The Old Lady equalised with David Trezeguet on 52 minutes, before Giuseppe Sculli gave the Bianconeri the lead. Fabio Capello’s side stretched their advantage with captain Alex Del Piero who grabbed a brace in the space of six minutes.

Meanwhile, Lecce have moved to cool talk that Juve are interested in signing Marco Cassetti. "Lecce have no need to sell their best players," stated President Rico Semeraro. "Obviously it would be hard to keep them if big clubs come in for one or two.

"I’ve read that Juventus are ready to sign Cassetti which is surprising as I still haven’t received an offer."

Giannichedda passes Juve medical

Football Italia

Giuliano Giannichedda will be a Juventus player next season after he passed his medical on Wednesday. Although the club have yet to officially announce his arrival, transfer guru Luciano Moggi has said that the 30-year-old will be wearing the Bianconeri shirt next term.

The former Udinese and Italy player will arrive at the Stadio Delle Alpi on a free transfer after his contract at Lazio expired. Giannichedda will be joined by Croatian defender Robert Kovac, 31, next term. He passed his medical last week after his contract at Bayern Munich ran out.

Juventus to discuss Mozart tomorrow with Reggina

Tribal Football

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi will meet with Reggina president Lillo Foti tomorrow to thrash out terms for midfielder Mozart. The Brazilian's agent, Dario Canovi, has already discussed personal terms with Juve and Moggi is hopeful of sealing a deal when he meets with Foti at a hotel in Vibo Valentia tomorrow.

Reggina want £4.5 million for Mozart and Moggi hopes to lower the cash component by offering a player in part-exchange. Manuele Blasi has been mentioned as a potential makeweight. "I know that there is the interest of Juve, it is an honor - and to play for them would appeal to anyone," said Mozart.

Lecce president cool on Juventus link with Cassetti

Tribal Football

Lecce president Rico Semeraro has dismissed reports linking midfielder Marco Cassetti with Juventus. Semeraro said: "Lecce does not need to sell our jewels. Sure, if a big offer arrives, it would be difficult to hold onto those players that interest the great clubs.

"I've read in various newspapers that Juventus is ready to acquire Cassetti; nevertheless Lecce still have the final say on this matter."

Opinion: Why Cole won’t join Juve

Football Italia

Juventus have today been linked with a swoop for Arsenal defender Ashley Cole. However, the move is unlikely to occur as Football Italia explains.

Don’t expect Ashley Cole to be wearing a Juventus shirt next season – no matter what you have read or heard in England today. There is no doubt that the international defender is a quality player, but there are serious question marks over why the Italian champions would supposedly bid £16m for him. It just doesn’t add up.

There are a number of reasons why this transfer story seems to be based more on rumour than reality. After all, the Bianconeri already have one of Europe’s best left-backs in the form of Gianluca Zambrotta. The latter has been a revelation since his transformation from a right-winger into a full-back, becoming a firm favourite of not only the fans but also the club’s hierarchy.

The Italian international has admittedly been linked with a big money move to Chelsea, even if the peninsula outfit and the player himself have denied those claims. But even if he did join the Stamford Bridge outfit for a substantial fee, Juve are unlikely to use that cash injection to buy a direct replacement for the former Bari player.

Any supposed Zambrotta fee would more likely be used in an attempt to sign Antonio Cassano from Roma. The attacking talent is undoubtedly the Bianconeri’s number one transfer objective this summer, and the fact that his Giallorossi contract expires in 2006 makes this the perfect time to poach the starlet.

The reality is that Juventus just don’t need Cole – even if Zambrotta is sold. Why? Because they arguably already have a left-back for the future in the shape of Giorgio Chiellini. He’s spent this season on loan at Fiorentina, leading to promotion to the full Italian national side from the U-21 set-up, and the Old Lady have already confirmed that he will be recalled for the next campaign.

Juventus reach deal for Empoli defender Coda

Tribal Football

Juventus have secured an agreement with Empoli for their young defender Andrea Coda. The 20 year-old stopper will move to Juve for the start of the 2006/07 season and while he is unaware of anything official, Coda is excited by the prospect.

He said: "I do not know anything about my eventual move to Juve. The leaders of Empoli have said so little to me. But for me, to wear the shirt of Juve would be a dream, as I have always been a fan."

Juventus to use Palladino as bait for midfield signing

Tribal Football

Juventus are set to use their Italian whizkid, Raffaele Palladino, as bait to land a major midfield signing over the summer. Palladino starred on-loan with Serie B Salernitana, finishing the campaign with 19 goals, and has been the subject of enquiries from several Serie A club presidents.

Juve director general Luciano Moggi does not want to lose Palladino outright and instead will seek a co-ownership agreement. Palladino could be offered to Lecce for either Cristiano Ledesma or Marco Cassetti. Brazilian midfielder Mozart is also in Juve's sights and like Lecce, Reggina have registered their interest with Juve for Palladino.

Lippi looking to be impressed

Football Italia

Marcello Lippi has defended his squad choices for Italy’s two friendly games in North America this week. The tactician has selected an inexperienced 23-man party for the trip, handing seven players their maiden call-up.

"This is a squad born from this season’s championship," he underlined. "It is a reward for all those players who have done well. These men will have the opportunity to impress me and if they continue to do well for their clubs, they could become Azzurri regulars."

Lippi has left many of the big name players such as Francesco Totti, Alex Del Piero, Fabio Cannavaro and Gigi Buffon behind. Opting instead to take a closer look at men such as Palermo’s Matteo Guardalben, Roberto Baronio of Chievo and Serie A top scorer Cristiano Lucarelli.

"I’m disappointed that the American fans won’t be able to see certain players but I had little choice," added Lippi.

The Coach has been hampered by the Italian Cup Final between Roma and Inter, plus the Parma - Bologna play-off game. However, the trip has also seen an old face return to the fold in the shape of Lazio’s veteran ‘keeper Angelo Peruzzi.

"I have a great relationship with him," added Lippi, who worked with the player at Juventus and Inter. "His enthusiasm has surprised me."

The squad flew out of Italy this morning and will land in Toronto, Canada, later this evening. They will face Serbia and Montenegro at the Sky Dome on Wednesday night, 1am in the UK. The Azzurri will then travel to New York to take on Ecuador in the Giants Stadium on Saturday. That game will start at 8pm UK time.

Goalkeepers: Guardalben (Palermo), Peruzzi (Lazio), Roma (Monaco).

Defenders: Barzagli (Palermo), Cassetti (Lecce), Chiellini (Fiorentina), Dainelli (Fiorentina), Grosso (Palermo), Oddo (Lazio), Zaccardo (Palermo).

Midfielders: Barone(Palermo), Baronio (Chievo), Blasi (Juventus), Coppola (Messina), Esposito (Cagliari), Mauri (Udinese), Mesto (Reggina).

Attackers: Brienza (Palermo), Di Michele (Udinese), Iaquinta (Udinese), Langella (Cagliari), C. Lucarelli (Livorno), Toni (Palermo).

Chiellini ‘rejects’ Juventus switch

Football Italia

Giorgio Chiellini has revealed that he wants to snub a return to Juventus in favour of remaining at Fiorentina. The Italian champions have confirmed that they will "undoubtedly" buy the Viola’s share in the player after agreeing a co-ownership deal last summer.

But Chiellini, now an Italian international regular, would rather stay at the Stadio Artemio Franchi. "It is my desire to stay here," he told Fiorentina.it. "I’ll ask the club to find a way to keep me. Everything should be sorted out by the end of the month."

Chiellini would prefer to stay in Tuscany as he would be guaranteed first team football, rather than try to displace Gianluca Zambrotta in Turin. He’s also keen to work under Cesare Prandelli, who is likely to be named as the new Fiorentina boss.

"Prandelli is a Coach who would be good for me," he added. "I don’t know him but a lot of people speak well of him, he knows how to improve youngsters."

Meanwhile, the Viola could also sign Matteo Ferrari from Roma if Prandelli is handed control of the team. The defender performed expertly under Prandelli at Parma but struggled badly without him at Roma this season.

Alex & Zambro staying at Juve

Football Italia

Juventus have confirmed that Alessandro Del Piero and Gianluca Zambrotta will still be wearing the Bianconeri shirt next season. Both men have been associated with exits but chief operating officer Antonio Giraudo has blocked their departures.

"It is our objective to build a strong and competitive squad, both on the domestic and international scene," he told Radio Anch`io lo Sport. "I can say that Zambrotta and Del Piero, contrary to what is being said by some, will still be in our colours next season."

Del Piero has been linked with a sale given his uneasy relationship with boss Fabio Capello, who regularly substituted him in the last campaign. His future has been cast into even more doubt as rumours persist that Juve want Antonio Cassano of Roma.

"Cassano is a great attacker who can make a difference to any team," added Giraudo. "But we have five international strikers which I think is more than enough."

Meanwhile, Zambrotta has been linked with Chelsea after emerging as one of the best left-backs in Europe. "Do Chelsea want me? Nobody has told me anything," said the player himself. "I’m happy at Juventus and want to stay in an effort to win the Champions’ League.

"That will happen unless Juventus decide they don’t want me anymore."

Juventus move for £15M Arsenal fullback Cole

Tribal Football

Juventus have moved for Arsenal contract rebel Ashley Cole. The Sun says the Italian giants enquired about Cole but were told by the Gunners he would cost £15million. Cole has a year left on his contract and refusing to sign a new deal. Juve director general Luciano Moggi has been monitoring Cole's bust-up with Arsenal chiefs and is ready to pounce for the England star.

Juventus rival Real Madrid for defender Lugano

Tribal Football

Juventus have joined Real Madrid's interest for Sao Paulo defender Diego Lugano. The Uruguay international has been the subject of an approach from Real representatives in the past fortnight. However, Juve are also keen on the 24 year-old after receiving glowing reports from their South American scouts. Lugano has been likened to outgoing Juve favourite Paolo Montero.

Agent: Juventus crazy to sell Mutu to Roma

Tribal Football

The agent of Juventus striker Adrian Mutu has dismissed reports linking the Romanian with AS Roma.

It's been mooted that Mutu could be offered to Roma as part of a package for striker Antonio Cassano, but the player's agent, Alessandro Moggi, declared: "I don't believe Mutu will go to Roma for Cassano. If Juve does do this, I would say they have done all that hard work for nothing. It would be a bad mistake.

"It seems absurd to me to think that Mutu could be sold by Juve where he has still not played, practically."

Juve dismiss Cassano claims

Sky Sports

Juventus have denied they are interested in signing Roma star Antonio Cassano and shrugged off speculation linking Alessandro Del Piero and Gianluca Zambrotta with moves away from Stadio Delle Alpi.

Reports had suggested that Cassano was a potential replacement for Premiership-bound Del Piero, while Zambrotta has attracted attention from Chelsea and Real Madrid. But Juventus chief officer Antonio Giraudo dismissed the claims and emphasised the wealth of striking talent already at the club.

"Del Piero and and Zambrotta are two big champions and they will stay at Juve," said Giraudo. "As for Cassano, we have reaffirmed many times he is an interesting player who is able to make the difference. But we have five international forwards and I think it is a line absolutely covered. Cassano, for the moment, isn't in Juve's plans."

General director Luciano Moggi echoed the sentiment, adding: "Cassano is a big player but we have really good players in attack and we will not change there. There will be a few changes: for the moment we have signed Giuliano Giannichedda and Robert Kovac."

Juve bring back Chiellini

Football Italia

Bianconeri transfer guru Luciano Moggi has confirmed that Fiorentina’s Giorgio Chiellini will return to Turin this summer. “We will undoubtedly buy up the other 50 per cent of Chiellini’s contract,” said the director general. “Fiorentina already know the situation and there will be no problem.”

The defender was signed by Juventus from Livorno at the end of last season, but immediately handed over to the Viola in a co-ownership deal. The youngster has impressed at the Stadio Artemio Franchi and earned a place in Marcello Lippi’s Italy squad.

Scudetto winners Juve are already planning for the next term and have confirmed the arrival of Bayern Munich defender Robert Kovac and Lazio midfielder Giuliano Giannichedda on free transfers. It has also been reported that they are in advanced negotiations for Lecce winger Marco Cassetti – something Moggi has denied.

“Cassetti is a very interesting young player and had a great campaign, but we don’t need him,” Moggi told the Gazzetta dello Sport.

Buffon appreciates Azzurri spirit

Football Italia

Gianluigi Buffon insists that Italy showed the right spirit to earn a point in Norway, while Christian Vieri and Marco Materazzi concede they may miss the Coppa Italia Final.

“I saw the right spirit from the team and everyone was eager to give their best for the Azzurri jersey,” said the goalkeeper following last night’s 0-0 draw in Oslo. “When you play with that kind of mentality, it doesn’t matter if you only get one point at the end of what was objectively quite a poor game. The result is a good one, even if we shouldn’t feel that we are qualified yet.”

Coach Marcello Lippi came in for criticism after leaving out Francesco Totti and Alessandro Del Piero for what some newspapers dubbed a ‘workmanlike squad.’ “People claim that with Totti and Del Piero on the pitch we would have won?” noted the Juventus star. “I don’t know and nobody can prove that theory.”

Slovenia’s draw against Belarus ensured that Italy remain four points clear at the top of World Cup qualifying Group 5. There was bad news for Inter during the Norway game, as both Christian Vieri and Marco Materazzi pulled up with muscular problems.

“I hope to recover in time and we’ll have to wait and see what the test results are, but I really am afraid I won’t make it,” confessed Vieri.

The Nerazzurri will challenge Roma in the Coppa Italia Final on June 12 and 15, but Roberto Mancini’s men are already forced to do without Ivan Ramiro Cordoba and several of their South American stars due to the Confederations Cup.

“At first glance I’d say that Vieri’s injury looks more serious than Materazzi’s,” revealed Italy chief medic Enrico Castellacci. “It’s tough to make an accurate diagnosis without the results of Monday’s tests.”

Juventus chief Moggi delighted with Kovac signing

Tribal Football

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi says the club is delighted with the capture of Bayern Munich defender Robert Kovac. The Croatia international is joining Juve on a Bosman and Moggi declared: "It is great for a Serie A club to be able to replace a player of Paolo Montero's ability with someone like Kovac.

"There is no problem with his non-EU status. We will find space for him."

Fiorentina rival West Brom, Middlesbrough for Tudor

Tribal Football

New Fiorentina coach Cesare Prandelli wants to bring Juventus defender Igor Tudor to Florence. Tudor spent the second-half of last season on-loan at Siena and has also courted interest from Middlesbrough and West Brom.

New Fiorentina director general Pantaleo Corvino will meet with his opposite number at Juve, Luciano Moggi, this week to discuss the futures of co-owned trio Giorgio Chiellini, Enzo Maresca and Fabrizio Miccoli. Corvino will also ask Moggi about a deal for Croatia international defender Tudor.

Chelsea prepare new bid for Atletico Madrid's £60M Torres

Tribal Football

Chelsea are launching a new bid for Atletico Madrid captain Fernando Torres. Blues owner Roman Abramovich wants to bring the Spanish superkid to Stamford Bridge next season and is willing to offer £40 million for the striker.

Torres' buyout clause is £60 million, but Abramovich will test Atletico's resolve in the coming week with a mega offer for the youngster.

Chelsea had a £24 million bid rejected by Atletico last summer and now intends to almost double that to prise Torres away from Madrid. For his part, the young striker declared: "The fans should be calm because I am very happy at Atletico. It is my home. I want to win something important with this club."

West Ham, Arsenal target Caracciolo has £4M price

Tribal Football

Brescia are ready to listen to offers for as low as £4 million for star striker Andrea Caracciolo. West Ham and Arsenal are chasing the Italy international, who wants to leave Brescia after their relegation last season.

Brescia president Luigi Corioni has publicly stated Caracciolo won't leave for less than £7 million, but the new price is being fixed following the club's demotion. Udinese have also made contact over the last 48 hours as they consider Caracciolo as a replacement for want-away centre-forward Vincenzo Iaquinta.

Norway 0 - 0 Italy

Football Italia

Camoranesi tackled by Norway's Jan Gunnar Solli Zambrotta tackles Jan Gunnar Solli

Marcello Lippi's Italy side is closer to the 2006 World Cup after earning a point in Norway, though there are injuries for two Inter stars.

Coach Lippi took a brave decision when opting to leave out Francesco Totti and Alessandro Del Piero, but he lost Alberto Gilardino to injury, Gennaro Gattuso to suspension and Alessandro Nesta was given compassionate leave.

This forged a new striking partnership between Antonio Cassano and Christian Vieri, while Palermo's Fabio Grosso took the left-back role, pushing Gianluca Zambrotta further up the field. Former Roma hitman John Carew lined up for Norway in the driving rain in Oslo as first took on second in qualifying Group 5.

An early defensive error went unpunished thanks to a tight offside flag, then at the other end the Norwegian goalkeeper rushed off his line to close down Mauro German Camoranesi as he latched on to Vieri's through ball.

The first real danger came after six minutes, as Carew was allowed a free header on John Arne Riise's cross which dipped on to the roof of the net. The Scandinavians were pushing hard in the early stages and Buffon ran out to kick clear from Iversen, then a Gamst-Pedersen strike was deflected out for a corner kick.

A scuffle broke out at the 10th minute when Buffon clattered into Gamst-Pedersen as he went to pluck a cross out of the air. The Juventus goalkeeper fell heavily on to his back and seemed to believe it was a very late foul, but the situation was quickly brought under control.

Vieri's ambitious long-range effort was smothered, but a Fabio Cannavaro intervention proved decisive on Iversen. Gamst-Pedersen hacked down Camoranesi with an extremely late two-footed challenge as the tension rose in Oslo, but there was no yellow card.

Vieri failed to make the most of a defensive error that had left him clear on goal, as he hesitated and tried to dribble round the last man. Cassano's first real move came after 24 minutes, but after some great build-up his cross for Vieri was too long.

Liverpool midfielder Riise was booked for a crunching challenge on Camoranesi as the Italo-Argentine was running towards the box. The resulting free kick was scuffed over the bar by Grosso. There was a fine team move just before the break, as Vieri and Cassano exchanged backheels, but Camoranesi's final strike was deflected out for a corner.

Moments later, Riise and Haestad drilled powerful shots just wide of the near post on the counter-attack. A weak Cassano effort was easily gathered, but the Roma starlet's pass then failed to reach Vieri through a sea of legs.

Norway started the second half with a bang, as Carew's angled drive whistled past the far post within 20 seconds of the opening whistle. Former Roma flop Carew was again dangerous soon after, as his rising shot went close from a tight angle.

Yet Vieri's strike was even more impressive, as he took advantage of a defensive error on Cassano's intelligent flick and a dipping finish from just inside the box was inches over the bar. There was bad news when Vieri pulled up with a suspected thigh strain on 55 minutes, which will probably rule him out of Inter's Coppa Italia Final against Roma. He made way for Palermo centre-forward Luca Toni.

Camoranesi was brought down by Gamst-Pedersen on the edge of the box after he had tricked his way past two Norwegian defenders and Andrea Pirlo's free kick was plucked out of the air. The Scandinavians were rather more accurate at the other end, as a set-piece was touched on for Carew's curling effort and Buffon was at full stretch to beat it away.

Lippi made a tactical substitution when replacing the disappointing Cassano with Udinese striker Vincenzo Iaquinta. He combined with Toni on the counter-attack only for the final ball to be wasteful.

Riise thumped a free kick from 33 metres that was smothered with some difficulty by Buffon, as chances were increasingly created only from set-pieces. Another Inter player pulled up with a thigh problem, as Marco Materazzi limped off to be replaced by Sampdoria's Aimo Diana, pushing Zambrotta back into a defensive role.

Italy had a great chance with 10 minutes remaining, as Toni sprung the offside trap on Pirlo's through ball and his relatively central finish was controlled by Myhre.

Riise blasted another hopeful effort from the edge of the box, but neither goalkeeper really had a tough save to make. Deep into stoppages, Riise's brave diving header prevented Iaquinta from getting on the end of a promising cross from six yards.

Lippi celebrates Norwegian draw

Football Italia

Marcello Lippi was overjoyed with a point in Oslo as Italy maintain their four-point lead at the top of Group 5.

“This is a good draw and I am very satisfied,” said the Coach after the 0-0 draw against Norway on Saturday evening. “We still have our advantage in the Group and in these cases a point can be worth more than a victory.”

Norway hold on to second place alongside Slovenia, who also drew 1-1 in Belarus this weekend, while Scotland earned their first victory of the campaign by beating bottom of the table Moldova 2-0.

“I saw a determined Italy side that created two or three scoring opportunities and ran very few risks at the back,” continued Lippi. “It was a dangerous trip, as a defeat would have taken Norway to within a point of our position.”

“Norway tried to take control and play with their style, but came up against a side that was focused and willing to fight for its result. We were a real team.”

The lack of creativity in this encounter played into the hands of those who criticised his decision to drop Francesco Totti and Alessandro Del Piero. “I don’t consider a workmanlike approach to be an insult – quite the contrary,” insisted Lippi. “We tried to play ball to feet despite the very muddy pitch and I got what I expected out of my players.”

However, the Azzurri Coach was eager to point out that the situation is far from resolved when it comes to qualifying for the 2006 World Cup. “I don’t feel that we are already at the tournament in Germany. I cannot possibly say that, as there are another four games to play.”

Capello eyes Liverpool's crown

Football Italia

Fabio Capello's Juve continue their tour of the Far East and Fabio Capello announces his intention for next season is to conquer the Champions' League.

“The key to success is to quickly forget what you have achieved and focus on your next objective,” said the Coach. “For instance, we are already looking ahead to next season. We want to be competitive and to follow Liverpool as winners of the Champions’ League.”

Capello has won the trophy with Milan in 1994, beating Barcelona 4-0, but wants to add another precious element to his CV after taking seven League titles with four different clubs. 5,000 fans attended the Bianconeri’s training session in Hong Kong, where they will play Kitchee later this morning (UK time).

Alessandro Del Piero is still considered to be a hero in the Far East and took the opportunity to calm the Press storm between captain and Coach.

“My rapport with Capello is perfect,” said the Italian international. “This is my first time in Hong Kong and I don’t want to disappoint the fans. I scored a decisive goal in our last friendly in Tokyo, but I won’t rest on my laurels and wish to score here as well.”

Friendly match in Hong Kong

Juventus players pose with KitChee players

In front of a 12.000 audience the Grand Promenade Cup was held at Hong Kong’s stadium in connection with the Charity Challenge 2005. Juventus faced the local team of Kitchee that won after penalty shoot out.

Del Piero shines in Hong Kong

Football Italia

The Bianconeri lost on penalties against Kitchee despite two splendid goals from Alex Del Piero and Pavel Nedved.

“It was a great game and very entertaining, but obviously I am not happy with the result,” said the ever-competitive Fabio Capello. “We deserved to win this and I liked the effort my men put in. It’s a shame Kitchee scored with their only two shots on goal, but that is football.”

Over 12,000 fans attended the Grand Promenade Cup tie in Hong Kong, where Juve were winning 2-0 at half-time. Alessandro Del Piero was again the star of the show, opening the scoring with a delightful solo effort before setting up Nedved for the second.

After the break, Kitchee got back on level terms with a Gumbs double and the local side eventually won 7-5 on penalties.

“I had real fun and it was wonderful to play in Hong Kong,” said Del Piero on the official Juventus website. “The local fans are very warm and passionate, just as they were in Japan. I think that we should’ve won, but the most important thing today was entertaining the supporters.”

Considering his warm reception and impressive performances during this summer tour of the Far East, Del Piero may well reconsider reports of an offer from Japanese club Yokohama Marinos. Juventus’ tour will conclude with a friendly against FC Tokyo at the Ajinomoto Stadium on June 7.

Juventus: Chimenti (Bonnefoi 82); Birindelli, Thuram (Ferrara 60), Zebina, Pessotto (Garbini Pereira 46); Kapo, Tacchinardi, Zanchi (Parisi 42), Nedved (Aronica 88); Del Piero (Sculli 71), Trezeguet (Tchite 78)

Owen part of Adriano swoop?

Football Italia

Adriano has only pledged the next year of his career to Inter and that could spark a massive player swap that includes Walter Samuel and Michael Owen. “Next season I will definitely be wearing the Nerazzurri jersey,” he told TV Record, “but if we don’t win anything then I will ask to be sold after the 2006 World Cup.”

This is a crucial statement from the Brazilian, who is increasingly frustrated with the lack of silverware at the San Siro. Inter have won just one UEFA Cup since 1994-95, though they have the chance to take the Coppa Italia in June’s Final against Roma.

“A player needs to win important things in his career,” added the former Parma and Fiorentina star. “I’ll ask to join a club where I can finally become a Champion.”

Adriano is set to be the hottest property on the transfer market amid reports of a bidding war between Chelsea and Real Madrid with the price-tag rocketing to £65m. According to the Corriere dello Sport-Stadio, Inter are not going to sit through another bitter split like the one that saw Ronaldo join Real after the 2002 World Cup, so they’ll take action now.

It’s reported that Real Madrid would be the preferred destination, because the Spaniards are willing to hand over Walter Samuel, Luis Figo, Santiago Solari and Michael Owen in exchange for the 23-year-old striker. These players would resolve many of Coach Roberto Mancini’s tactical issues in one fell swoop, while patron Massimo Moratti has long been a fan of the former Liverpool forward.

Gilardino snubs Chelsea bid

Football Italia

After Adriano’s refusal, now Alberto Gilardino has also distanced himself from Chelsea’s £30m bid, insisting he wants to join Milan. Yesterday it was reported that Parma had accepted an offer for the Italian international, though a deal cannot be completed until the relegation play-off with Bologna.

“Chelsea have not lodged any official bid for Gilardino,” announced the 23-year-old’s agent Bonetto. “In fact, we don’t even know of any negotiations. What I can say is that the player would prefer a move to Milan.”

This is the second snub that the Stamford Bridge outfit has received in the space of a few days, as fellow Serie A star Adriano has also publicly dismissed a switch to the Premiership.

“Gilardino would like to stay in Italy and his first choice is Milan, but we shouldn’t rule Chelsea out entirely. I would consider Real Madrid an unlikely solution, though. We hope everything can be sorted out as soon as possible without waiting until the end of August.”

However, Parma’s financial difficulties mean that they could try to push Gilardino towards Chelsea if faced with an offer that is £10m higher than Milan’s.

“I will go to dinner with patron Silvio Berlusconi on Monday evening and try to convince him that we need to spend money to create a winning team,” revealed Rossoneri Vice-President Adriano Galliani. “I’ve heard that Chelsea’s Peter Kenyon will go to Parma on Wednesday to discuss an important player. That means I’ll have to trip him up!”

Gilardino has scored 46 Serie A goals in the last two seasons, but will miss tonight’s World Cup qualifier in Norway due to injury.

Lucarelli called for Azzurri tour

Football Italia

Cristiano Lucarelli and Giandomenico Mesto are among seven debutants called for Italy’s friendly tour of the USA from June 7 to 11. Marcello Lippi named the squad ahead of the Azzurri’s World Cup qualifier in Norway and will perform several experiments in the two friendly games against Serbia-Montenegro and Ecuador.

Livorno hitman Lucarelli was widely expected to make his international bow after finishing the Serie A season as Capocannoniere with 24 goals.

The other new boys are Palermo goalkeeper Matteo Guardalben, Fiorentina defender Dario Dainelli, Palermo forward Franco Brienza, Messina midfielder Carmine Coppola, Chievo’s Roberto Baronio and Reggina fullback Giandomenico Mesto – a former Under-21 international. Lazio veteran Angelo Peruzzi also earns a recall.

The Azzurri will play Serbia-Montenegro on Wednesday June 8 at the Toronto Skydome (8pm local time, 1am in the UK) and Ecuador on Saturday June 11 at Giants Stadium in New York (3pm local time, 8pm in the UK).

Goalkeepers: Roma (Monaco), Peruzzi (Lazio), Guardalben (Palermo).

Defenders: Barzagli (Palermo), Chiellini (Fiorentina), Dainelli (Fiorentina), Oddo (Lazio), Cassetti (Lecce), Grosso (Palermo).

Midfielders: Baronio (Chievo), Blasi (Juve), Esposito (Cagliari), Barone (Palermo), Mesto (Reggina), Coppola (Messina), Mauri (Udinese).

Forwards: Iaquinta (Udinese), Toni (Palermo), Brienza (Palermo), Lucarelli (Livorno), Di Michele (Udinese), Langella (Cagliari).

Moggi welcomes Giannichedda

Football Italia

Juventus transfer guru Luciano Moggi has announced the imminent arrival of Giuliano Giannichedda and Robert Kovac. The Director General is traditionally cagey about deals until they are made official, but was open about the club’s strategy during a radio interview this afternoon.

“This has been an extraordinary season for Juventus and we proved throughout the campaign that we were better than Milan,” he told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli. “As for next year, the team is already competitive and we have already reinforced the squad with the signing of Kovac and Giannichedda.”

Neither of these deals are a surprise, as it has been reported for some weeks that the Bianconeri were in advanced negotiations.

31-year-old Giannichedda has proved himself to be a versatile player during the last year at Lazio, equally impressive in midfield and central defence when the situation called for it. He has decided not to extend his contract at the Stadio Olimpico.

Kovac will also be a free transfer, as the Croat international defender’s deal has expired with Bayern Munich.

Now Moggi’s main target will be Inter midfielder Cristiano Zanetti. Struggling to find room at the San Siro, he is a long-time favourite of Coach Fabio Capello and was also with him at Roma. Another option is Milan’s want-away star Massimo Ambrosini, whose patience at warming the bench has finally worn thin.

Another defender is also on Juve’s shopping list and Palermo’s Andrea Barzagli is the main target, though they have not lost hope of tempting Walter Samuel away from Real Madrid.

Nedved: Milan Have Signed The Best Czech Player

Goal.com

Juventus playmaker Pavel Nedved believes Milan have signed a great player in Udinese’s Marek Jankulovski. "He is the best Czech player at the moment. Better than me," he was quoted as saying in La Gazzetta dello Sport. "His injury was a pity, but he is one who works hard, he will recover soon.

"I’m sorry he didn’t join Juventus, it would have been beautiful to have a fellow countryman at the club. However, he has joined a great team, he will enjoy his football."

Cannavaro makes Cassano call

Football Italia

Juventus stopper Fabio Cannavaro has told Antonio Cassano to snub a move to Inter in favour of a Turin switch. The Nerazzurri have joined the Italian champions in the race for the youngster who looks set to leave Roma.

Reports yesterday suggested that the Milan giants were keen admirers but Cannavaro believes his club are in pole position for the talent. "I can’t say too much otherwise (director general) Luciano Moggi will fine me," smiled the Azzurri captain.

"All that I will say is that I don’t think he will join Inter, who already have Adriano, Obafemi Martins and many more. He would face stiff competition for a place at Juventus too, even if there will always be room for a player like him in a team."

Meanwhile, Messina say they are ready to sell Alessandro Parisi to Juventus during the summer. "Alessandro has been here with us for two years in which he has demonstrated that he has enough quality for Juventus," said owner Pietro Franza. "I would be more than happy to sell him to the Bianconeri."

The left-back, capped by Italy last season, is currently on tour with the Bianconeri in Japan.

Lippi happy to be unpopular

Football Italia

On the eve of Italy’s crunch World Cup qualifier in Norway, Coach Marcello Lippi assures his decisions are for the good of the side – even if they’re unpopular.

“I have read some critics claiming I made unpopular choices, but I have no interest in staying in this job for two years just trying to keep the peace with everyone,” said the tactician.

His decision to leave out Alessandro Del Piero and Francesco Totti caused more than a few raised eyebrows around the peninsula and it’s quite a gamble ahead of this important match in Oslo.

“Winning on Saturday evening would not mean automatic qualification to the World Cup, but it would be a massive step towards that goal,” he added. “I’d say it is right to refer to this as the first of three match-points, to use a tennis term.”

Italy are currently leading Group 5 with 12 points, while Norway and Slovenia follow on eight after five games. “This is not a squad lacking in creativity,” he noted. “We have had to play without Totti and Del Piero before and done well, so we are going to Norway with every intention of winning the match.”

As Alberto Gilardino also pulled out with injury, it seems certain that Antonio Cassano will partner Christian Vieri upfront.

“We have studied Norway carefully and know they are excellent in the air and on set-pieces, but quite vulnerable when hit down the flanks. The Scandinavians took the lead in Palermo, but we were able to turn it around and win 2-1. One this is certain – they are a very aggressive side and must not be underestimated.”

Gianluca Zambrotta missed the win over Scotland through suspension and could take on a key role in Oslo.

“We will try to seal up our place in Germany 2006,” said the Juventus fullback. “We have just finished our season, while Norway are starting theirs now, so hopefully they’ll be a little rusty. I’m sure Italy can win this game.”

Chelsea turn to Gilardino

Football Italia

Chelsea are in pole position to sign Alberto Gilardino after Parma reportedly accepted a £30m offer for the player. It was believed that Milan were favourites to sign the striker, closely followed by new champions Juventus.

However, speculation suggests that the Premiership outfit are now leading the race, after they turned their attention to Gilardino following Inter’s refusal to sell Adriano.

Milan were hopeful of concluding a deal for the 23-year-old once Parma’s survival play-off games against Bologna were over. They are believed to have already agreed terms with the player, while they were hopeful of reaching a deal with the Gialloblu over a transfer fee.

However, the Rossoneri are seemingly only prepared to offer around £20m – substantially lower than Chelsea’s alleged bid. Gilardino himself has stated on many occasions that he would prefer to remain in Italy, but the London club are ready to offer him £5m-a-season for the next five years.

More should be known next week once Parma chief Luca Baraldi returns from his mini-holiday on Sunday evening. Chelsea have admitted they want a new centre-forward and Gilardino’s record of scoring 23 League goals in each of the last two campaigns hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Liverpool plan £15M bid for Real Madrid star Raul

Tribal Football

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is planning a shock bid for Real Madrid captain and talisman Raul. Benitez is aiming to take advantage of Raul's testy relationship with Real coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo by offering a guaranteed starting place at Anfield.

The Sun says Benitez is lining up a sensational £15million bid for the Spanish superstar. The Liverpool boss wants Raul, who made FOUR private visits to Anfield last season, to spearhead his Kop revolution. The Real Madrid and Spain captain even watched a Reds training session on one trip.

Raul said: "After 11 years here I want what's best for the club. If at some time I have to sacrifice myself in order for the team to progress, then I will do. If the club calls you up and says you have to go, then as a player you have to be prepared to look for a way out that benefits everyone.

"If I listen to the polls in some papers, it looks as though I should leave now. I still feel useful to the club and believe I haven't reached my peak, but I don't want to be in the way. All I want is for the club to be clear with me."
