Capello: “We deserved more”

Juventus.com

“I think that the best player of the match was Toldo. We created several scoring occasions with Ibrahimovic, some others with Nedved but Inter was closed in defence and could take the lead home.”

Fabio Capello expected a tough match but probably not as unlucky as it was; Juventus was more dangerous to Toldo than Inter to Buffon but it was the Nerazzurri who took the three points home: “The first half was balanced – continued the coach – they played well too but we were the only ones who attempted on goal.

“After all, such is football: there are some matches where you win with only a couple of finishes and some others where you concede a goal after only one attempt. It is disappointing, as I don’t think we deserved such result.”

A positive fact for the coach is the debut of Masiello, who replaced Birindelli in the second half: “He did very well and showed great personality. He’s an extremely interesting youth who’s been training with us for long yet and whom we’re keeping an eye on.”

Camoranesi: "Winning attitude"

Juventus.com

Dear supporters,

while I’m writing to you, I have mixed feelings: on the one hand, I must admit I regret the defeat against Inter, on the other hand I believe that we’ll do well, very well, in the final rush. What happened Wednesday night is under everybody’s eyes: the Nerazzurri kicked one shot on goal, compared to our 8, but unfortunately their only attempt was the winning one.

Such is football: when the ball just does not want to get in, there’s no way you can make it. We tried really hard but we found an extraordinary Toldo in every occasion. We’re undoubtedly disappointed for losing the match as well as the advantage over Milan but these are the very starting points for me to look at the remaining six matches with great confidence.

In these cases, it is usual to think about one match at a time..it is true but partly. We must also have the ultimate target, the Scudetto, clear in our minds and play every single shot as it was the decisive one to win the title.

We’ll be in Rome next Sunday to play a decisive match against Lazio and it will be the same the following Sunday against Bologna and so forth. This must be our attitude: there won’t be only one direct face-to-face match, there will be six and we must and want to win them all.

Yours affectionately,
Mauro Camoranesi

Zlatan ban rules out Milan clash

Football Italia

Francesco Totti has been given a five-match ban, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic's three-game stop rules him out of the Milan showdown. Ibrahimovic was going to be suspended for this Sunday's trip to Lazio anyway after he was booked in the 1-0 defeat to Inter, but TV evidence was also used for his off the ball clash with Ivan Cordoba.

Not witnessed by the officials, it prompted another two-match ban that will rule the Juventus striker out of games against Bologna and Milan. It's almost certain Juve will appeal to get the suspension reduced. That lash out on Cordoba wasn't the only incident involving Ibrahimovic during the game, as he also headbutted Sinisa Mihajlovic.

Juve stunned by Ibra suspension

Football Italia

Juventus claim they are amazed and worried by the three-match ban given to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and will appeal, while Milan see their Scudetto chances boosted. “We will lodge an immediate appeal against this decision,” revealed director general Luciano Moggi. “The Disciplinary Commission’s findings were like a bolt from the blue.”

Ibrahimovic was caught on camera striking out at Ivan Cordoba during Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat to Inter when the ball was in the other half of the pitch. The Swede was also involved in another incident during the same game, in which he tried to head butt Sinisa Mihajlovic.

“We really weren’t expecting this, especially as none of the newspapers or television programmes had really zoned in on that situation,” continued Moggi. “We hope to have the ban reduced on appeal, as if it stands then he would be suspended for the May 8 encounter with Milan. I can confess that we are worried.”

The Bianconeri will already be without the injured David Trezeguet and possibly Jonathan Zebina for that Scudetto showdown, so to lose their top scorer as well would be a heavy blow.

Milan, on the other hand, are celebrating their stroke of luck and can now look to the final weeks of the season with more confidence. “There are five games remaining that are worth three points each and one that will be worth six points,” said Rossoneri director Adriano Galliani.

Galliani is often at the centre of controversy because he is both in charge of Milan and the head of the Lega Calcio, which includes the Disciplinary Commission that suspended Ibrahimovic.

“We have also suffered at the hands of some controversial refereeing decisions and over the last two games have had two good goals disallowed, but I think that as Lega Calcio President it would be inelegant of me to discuss that aspect of the game.”

Giraudo: Unlucky, But We Shall Fight Till The End

Goal.com

The Juventus Administrator believes his side can still challenge for the Scudetto despite the latest setback. Critics are already proclaiming Milan as the Serie A winners, but Antonio Giraudo is confident that the Bianconeri will be up there till the last matchday.

“The team is not tired, it’s still in the race and we shall challenge Milan till the last match. Against Inter, Juve played a good game. However, the episodes did not favour us because we hit the post twice.”

Milan and Juve are currently leading the Serie A standings with 70 points each and 6 matchdays remaining, including the direct encounter.

Trez keen on Arsenal switch

Football Italia

David Trezeguet says he wouldn’t object to an Arsenal move, even if Valencia are also being linked with the Juventus ace on Thursday.

Whispers in Turin over the last month have suggested that the Frenchman will be sold in the summer. And now the former Monaco star says he wants to team up with fellow French forward Thierry Henry at Arsenal.

"It would be nice for me to play in England," Trezeguet told The Sun newspaper. "Why not? I have a perfect understanding with Henry. Sometimes when we talk, we would love to play together in club football. I'm sure it will happen one day."

The 27-year-old has had an injury plagued season which has allowed summer signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic to become the main man in Turin.

Trezeguet was on the verge of leaving the Delle Alpi last summer as his contract was set to expire in 2006. A move to Barcelona was already lined up before new boss Fabio Capello insisted that the player be handed a new deal.

Yet a move to Spain could now be back on with alternative reports on Thursday suggesting Valencia are keen. The current Liga champions have allegedly already contacted Trezeguet’s father, who is also is agent, to make an initial enquiry.

Valencia already have good links with the Italian giants after they signed Marco Di Vaio from Juve in the summer.

Valencia approach Juventus ace Trezeguet

Tribal Football

Valencia have approached the agent and father of Juventus striker David Trezeguet. Jorge Trezeguet was contacted by Valencia chiefs this week to sound him out about his son's interest in moving to Spain next season.

Trezeguet almost joined Barcelona last summer, only for coach Fabio Capello to block the deal just a month into his appointment. However, while Capello regards the Frenchman as a vital part of his squad, the player's relationship with Juve directors has deteriorated this season.

Trezeguet's injury problems are a major concern for Juve director general Luciano Moggi, who is now seriously considering making the striker available. The striker's situation has crystallised this week following the news that Chelsea have been granted permission to seek £8 million damages from Juve attacker Adrian Mutu for testing positive for drugs.

Juve could be forced to foot the bill for Mutu, which may lead to Trezeguet being cashed in to cover the Chelsea claim.

Juventus to co-own Diogo with Palermo

Tribal Football

Juventus and Palermo are set to buy the registration of River Plate midfielder Carlos Diogo. The two clubs are reportedly in negotiations with River for the 21 year-old Uruguay international, who will be co-owned by the Serie A clubs. Next season Diogo will move to Italy and play the campaign out at Palermo.

Chelsea still keen on Juventus fullback Zambrotta

Tribal Football

Chelsea remain keen on Juventus leftback Gianluca Zambrotta. The Blues trail has gone cold in recent weeks after a flurry of inquiries were made for the Italy international.

But The Sun says manager Jose Mourinho is also closing in on a top-class left-back, with Juve star Zambrotta lined up if a move for Arsenal's Ashley Cole is wrecked by the Premier League's tap-up inquiry.

Bruce keen on Appiah

Sky Sports

Birmingham City manager Steve Bruce has confirmed that Juventus midfielder Stephan Appiah is a summer transfer target. Appiah is likely to be one of the most in-demand players in Europe at the end of the season after struggling to secure regular football this term.

He joined Juventus from Brescia in 2003 and, after featuring prominently in his debut campaign, has been more of a peripheral figure under Fabio Capello. Bologna and Fiorentina are reportedly willing to keep the Ghanaian in Serie A but there is also strong interest from The Premiership.

Everton, Newcastle United and Portsmouth have been put forward as suitors of the 24-year-old, while Middlesbrough watched the African last week. But Birmingham have now joined their Premiership rivals in the hunt for Appiah, who is under contract in Turin until 2008.

Blues boss Bruce has acknowledged that Appiah is on his shopping list for the summer and is assessing whether to pursue his interest.

It is unclear whether Juventus would be happy to allow Appiah to leave Stadio Delle Alpi on loan or if they would seek to offload the player on a permanent basis, with the powerful midfielder rated in the £3.5 million bracket.

Mutu: Compensation a risky precedent

ESPN Soccernet

Banned striker Adrian Mutu believes the decision allowing his former club Chelsea to seek compensation from him has set a dangerous precedent. The 26-year-old Romanian was sacked by the English club in October after testing positive for cocaine, for which he is serving a seven-month worldwide ban due to end on May 18.

The English Premier League ruled on Wednesday that Mutu had breached his contract and Chelsea were entitled to pursue compensation through world governing body FIFA.

"This may create a dangerous precedent, with consequences for all soccer players," local daily Pro Sport quoted Mutu as saying on Thursday. "Employers might fire anyone, anywhere and ask damages for different reasons," Mutu said.

Chelsea are seeking to recoup some of the €15.8 million they paid for Mutu, who joined them from Parma in August 2003. Any compensation is likely to come from Juventus, who signed Mutu in January.

"You wonder how I feel?" Mutu said. "I feel as anyone would if they were in my place and asked to pay €11.5 million. Now, I expect anything (the worst) to happen to me," Mutu said.

I’m staying at Roma, says Cassano

Football Italia

Antonio Cassano has told angry Roma fans that he doesn’t want to leave the club at the end of the season. Cassano made the shock statement directly to a group of Giallorossi supporters today, who had turned up at the Trigoria training base to protest at the team’s disastrous campaign.

"I’ve come out here to face you because I want to stay at this club," the youngster said after the 2-0 loss to Siena last night.

The Italian international is only contracted to the outfit until 2006 and talks over an extension had apparently stalled over his salary demands. But Cassano insists that is not true, adding that neither are the reports that he wants to team up with former boss Fabio Capello at Juventus next season.

"I just want a future here and I’m not interested in money," he added. "You shouldn’t listen to talk and it is not true that I keep in touch with Capello."

Juventus 0 - 1 Inter

Football Italia

Del Piero appears to be pleading to Capello not to substitute him again

Inter have done their rivals Milan a favour by beating Juventus at the Delle Alpi and restoring parity at the top of the table.

The Derby d'Italia came at a crucial moment of the campaign, as Juventus had just broken three points clear at the top, but on-form Inter were coming off three consecutive victories and could do their rivals Milan a favour by getting a result in Turin.

Both sides had injury worries with David Trezeguet, Jonathan Zebina, Adriano, Alvaro Recoba and Juan Sebastian Veron out of action, while Christian Vieri was again left on the bench.

Ivan Cordoba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic clashed heads early on, but both were able to continue after treatment, while Gigi Buffon had to rush off his line to close down Oba Martins.

Ibrahimovic also clashed heads with Sinisa Mihajlovic, though this time it did not appear to be unintentional. The two had tangled as Ibrahimovic was brought down on his way towards the goal and play had already been stopped when the Swede hit out, but it was a light contact and he was shown a yellow card.

Buffon did well to block a Martins looping cross-shot, but Juve went very close indeed on 15 minutes when Emerson rose to get on the end of a corner kick and his header thumped the underside of the crossbar. Ibrahimovic also had a good chance with a central effort blocked by Francesco Toldo.

Cruz climbs high over Birindelli and scores

It was Inter who took the lead after 24 minutes when Julio Cruz rose for a looping header on Ze Maria's cross from the right. The Argentine had also scored a brace here last season, so he evidently enjoys playing at the Stadio Delle Alpi.

Stephen Appiah was booked for a cynical challenge to prevent Obafemi Martins sprinting away on the counter-attack, while Alessandro Del Piero's free kick went close and Toldo pushed out an Alessandro Birindelli strike from distance.

Del Piero and Cruz couldn't keep their efforts down as the second half kicked off, while a Martins lob was off target.

Juventus hit the woodwork for the second time when a swerving Ibrahimovic shot clipped the woodwork with Toldo immobile. Soon after Zlatan exchanged passes with Del Piero in the area before Cordoba muscled him off the ball.

Toldo palmed away a fierce Ibrahimovic free kick and Mauro German Camoranesi's follow-up was charged down by Giuseppe Favalli as Juve dominated the second half. Christian Vieri came on for the closing stages in place of Cruz, but Toldo performed a splendid save on Ibrahimovic as he chested down and rifled his shot towards goal.

Juventus: Buffon; Birindelli (Masiello 56), Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Appiah, Emerson (Blasi 53), Nedved; Del Piero (Zalayeta 70), Ibrahimovic

Inter: Toldo; J Zanetti, Cordoba, Mihajlovic, Favalli; Ze Maria, C Zanetti, Cambiasso, Kily Gonzalez (Stankovic 79); Martins (Karagounis 91), Cruz (Vieri 76)

Post-match comments

Fabio Capello: “We played a great game against a talented squad that came here to use the counter-attack. Perhaps they were more open in the first half, but after the break we were very dangerous and put out some great football. Unfortunately, there are days in this game where you hit the woodwork and the goalkeeper saves everything.”

Capello Still Positive Despite Inter Shock

Goal.com

Juve coach Fabio Capello still believes Juventus will claim the Italian title at the end of the season, even though the loss suffered at the hands of Inter on Wednesday allowed Milan to rejoin the Bianconeri at the top of the table. “Milan are a great team, but I’m convinced we will win the title in the end,” Capello said after the game.

The Juventus boss believed his team played better than Inter, and deserved to come away with the encounter with a more favourable result.

“We played well, but the result was not in our favour. Inter are inferior to us, but they closed themselves well and hit us with quick counter-attacks. Our first half wasn’t good, but in the second we did beautiful things,” he said.

Juventus travel to Rome on Sunday where they will face on-form Lazio in the Stadio Olimpico.

Thuram rules out France U-turn

Football Italia

Juventus defender Lilian Thuram maintains that he has no plans of returning to international football with France. The stopper retired from the French set-up after Euro 2004 and he is adamant that he won’t play for his nation again.

"I am not attracted by one more cap," he said. "Perhaps I was lucky to live with a strong group of characters who were able to put themselves on the line for the team. As I could not find that again, I could not go on. I won't change my mind."

Although Thuram has ruled himself out of selection, he does believe that France boss Raymond Domenech has made a mistake by not including more experienced players in his teams. He also fears that France are in danger of missing out on the World Cup as a result of Domenech’s selection policy which has favoured youth.

"I’ve got the impression that we have been preparing for the worst from the beginning by saying things like ‘it’s going to be difficult’ and ‘we need time’," Thuram commented. "It’s just my opinion but I don’t agree with that. We haven’t got time," he insisted.

The former World Cup winner named three players he feels should be playing more under Domenech.

"Normally I wouldn’t mention names but now I have stopped playing for France, so I can do so," he continued. "Players like Johan Micoud and Olivier Dacourt have significant international experience. Also, guys like Mickael Silvestre could be playing. I don’t know what is going on."

Thuram also called for Domenech to stop making references to the retired players. "Talking about the absent players all the time, knowing that they are not coming back, shows insecurity with regards to his current squad. That could weaken confidence," he said.

France are currently joint top of World Cup qualifying Group 4 with Israel, but both the Republic of Ireland and Switzerland have a game in hand and are just a point back.

Juventus net Diogo - reports

Football Italia

Reports in South America insist that Juventus will sign River Plate youngster Carlos Andre Diogo. The 21-year-old Uruguayan has turned down the offer of a new contract with his Argentine club, which suggests a move is on the horizon.

Stories in both Argentina and Diogo’s homeland maintain that Turin will be his next destination. The international is liked by the Bianconeri as he would provide cover for both right-back Jonathan Zebina and right-winger Mauro Camoranesi.

The only stumbling block now would be that Juventus must first sell one of their non-EU players in order to net Diogo. That means that Paolo Montero, Marcelo Zalayeta, Ruben Olivera or Stephen Appiah will be sacrificed in the summer. Montero, given his age, is likely to move on even if Appiah has also been linked with an exit recently.

However, there is the possibility that Diogo will leave the Stadio Delle Alpi as soon as he arrives. He may be offered on loan to either Palermo or Livorno, two clubs who have good links with the Italian giants.

Juventus closing in on Diogo

Tribal Football

Juventus are closing in on River Plate midfielder Carlos Diogo. The 21 year-old Uruguay international has rejected new terms by River and is expected to sign for Juve before the end of the season. In Paco Casal, Diogo shares the same agent as Juve stars Paolo Montero, Ruben Olivera and Marcelo Zalayeta, which has the Argentine press reporting that a deal to Turin is all but wrapped up.

Diogo isn't expected to play for Juve next season, but instead will be sent away on-loan to a Serie A rival to help his development.

Juventus ace Del Piero waiting on Arsenal, Spurs offers

Tribal Football

Juventus star Alessandro del Piero is seriously weighing up his future in Turin. Now 30, Del Piero realises his time at Juve could be coming to an end after both coach Fabio Capello and director general Luciano Moggi both told him publicly that he must accept being substituted in games.

The Italy international has endured a difficult campaign and has admitted to close friends this season has been his toughest since joining Juve. If he is to move, Del Piero favours a switch to the Premiership - preferably London, where Arsenal and Tottenham have already sent out feelers about the possibility of a summer deal.

Long-term, Del Piero would love to play in Japan's J-League, but for his immediate future he is open to a move to England - if he cannot convince himself of having a major role at Juve next season.

Its suggested both Arsenal and Tottenham will come knocking before the end of the month to sound out Del Piero's representatives about what sort of salary he is looking for and the fee Juve would demand for his transfer.

Trez linked to Spain

Sky Sports

The French press are suggesting that Juventus' David Trezeguet will move to Spain in the summer. The France international has had a torrid season through injury and poor form, and rumours are rife that he will look to leave Turin.

Suggestions that coach Fabio Capello has lost faith in the pacey forward have hit the press at the same time as the assertion in But! that the player's father and agent Jorge Trezeguet has already met officials from Valencia.

There are two obstacles to a move to Mestalla, the first being the club's longstanding interest in Liverpool's Milan Baros. On top of this, Trezeguet's stellar wages at Juve appear to be beyond Valencia's reach - meaning the player would have to make financial sacrifices to complete a move to Spain.

Chelsea chase Mutu compensation

Football Italia

Chelsea have been given permission by the Premier League to seek compensation over Adrian Mutu’s move to Juventus. The Stamford Bridge outfit, who sacked Mutu in October after he tested positive for cocaine, are looking to net around £8m of the £15.7m transfer fee they handed over to Parma for the player.

Even though the Blues are taking on Mutu in the case, Juventus would have to pay any possible damages following his capture in January. FIFA could now be asked to intervene in the case or Chelsea may take the action to a civil court.

Chelsea were given the green light on Wednesday after the League's appeals committee heard evidence from boss Jose Mourinho, chief executive Peter Kenyon, a Juventus representative and Mutu himself.

"The appeals committee concluded that the conduct of the player in taking banned drugs was gross misconduct, which entitled the club to treat the player's contract as at an end and amounted to a unilateral breach without just cause or sporting just cause," read a statement from the Premier League.

"The club is therefore entitled to proceed to seek compensation and sporting sanctions from the dispute resolution chamber (DRC) of FIFA."

The 26-year-old is currently serving a world-wide ban and won’t be eligible to play until next month – for Juve’s last two games of the season. Although Chelsea sacked the former Inter forward, they insist he broke his contract by breaching the terms of his contract.

This is the first time that an outfit has looked to gain compensation from a player after his dismissal.

Chelsea green light for £8M Mutu damages claim

Tribal Football

Chelsea have been given the green light to pursue an £8 million damages claim against Juventus striker Adrian Mutu. The Blues want £8m for the player they sacked for taking cocaine following a Premier League ruling last night. And that could scupper Mutu's move to Juventus when his worldwide ban expires on May 16.

Juve coach Fabio Capello thought he was signing the player as a free agent. He will not be so keen to take Mutu, 26, if Juventus are ordered by FIFA to meet Chelsea's compensation demands.

Mutu cost Chelsea £16m when they signed him from Parma two years ago. But they cancelled his £60,000-a-week contract in October after he failed a drugs test and was suspended for the season.

Mutu's advisers argued that by sacking the player they had forfeited their right to any transfer fee. But the Premier League tribunal backed Chelsea's claim that the player should not be allowed to profit from his misconduct.

Man Utd, Liverpool alerted as Van der Vaart rejects Ajax deal

Tribal Football

Premiership clubs have been put on red alert after Rafael van der Vaart rejected a new contract offer from Ajax this week.

The Amsterdammers gave their former captain, whose current deal expires in June 2006, the option of remaining at the ArenA for a further 12 months but the player's agent Soren Lerby said: "Van der Vaart is not interested in a one-year deal."

Despite the snub, Ajax insist they will not attempt to offload the 22-year-old this summer.

"We will not actively try to sell him now," director Arie van Eijden told De Telegraaf. "He told us that he doesn't want to extend his stay here. We will see how things develop in the next few months. Sometimes things change."

Despite the claims, Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham are all sure to come knocking before the end of the season. Van der Vaart has admitted an ambition to play in the Premiership, though along with United, has listed AC Milan and Barcelona as clubs he'd like to play for.

Inter Milan ask Roma to name price for De Rossi

Tribal Football

Inter Milan have asked AS Roma to name their price for midfielder Daniele De Rossi. The youngster has also caught the eye of Real Madrid and Manchester United this season, which has seen the attacker break into Marcello Lippi's Italy squad.

Inter intermediaries asked after De Rossi during new talks over the future of unhappy Romanian defender Cristian Chivu. Like Chivu, Roma are determined to hold onto De Rossi, though much may depend on the Sensi family's ability to fix their finances before the start of next season.

Fed-up Valencia to invite Liverpool bid for Aimar

Tribal Football

Valencia are ready to invite offers for their Argentine midfield ace Pablo Aimar at the end of this season. Marca says Valencia directors are fed up with Aimar's attitude and also his constant injury concerns.

Aimar's decision to pull out of Sunday's game against Real Mallorca and his overall commitment to the cause has exasperated Valencia directors, who will go against the wishes of coach Antonio Lopez and seek buyers for the midfielder.

Lopez insists he can get the best out of Aimar, who was reinstalled to the starting XI following the sacking of Claudio Ranieri earlier this year. But Valencia chiefs have had enough and know Aimar's lack of commitment will eventually bring a reaction from fans.

Waiting to pick up Aimar is his former Valencia coach, Rafa Benitez, at Liverpool. Benitez wants to add some creativity to his midfield next season with injury and form concerns hanging over Harry Kewell and former Real Madrid winger Antonio Nunez. Aimar enjoyed his best football in Europe under Benitez and would jump at the chance to play for him again.

Wednesday 20 April

Juventus v Inter Milan: Preview

ESPN Soccernet

It's all been rather unsavoury of late for Juventus and Internazionale, who go head-to-head at the Stadio Delle Alpi. Both teams won their last match, but fans of both are still smarting over their quarter-final exits from the Champions League.

"That Russian referees were chosen for our quarter-final game in Turin while Chelsea were on the other side of the draw seems rather curious," fumed Juventus general director Luciano Moggi in Gazzetta dello Sport after the loss to Liverpool.

"Someone may not have wanted an Italian final."

Then there was Inter Milan. Beaten like a drum for the better part of two games by their city rivals, their second leg against AC Milan had to be stopped 17 minutes from time because of missiles and flares raining onto the pitch.

AC Milan led 3-0 on aggregate when play was stopped and advanced to the semi-finals. UEFA also rapped Inter, fining them £130,000 and ruling they must play their next four European games behind closed doors, while two more matches could be added to that should the fans misbehave again.

Both teams appeared to put the nightmares behind them with Juve beating Lecce 5-2 while Inter shut out Cagliari 2-0. Juve fans can also console themselves with AC Milan's surprise defeat to Siena last week, which allowed the Bianconeri to move three points clear at the top of Serie A.

But midfield wizard Pavel Nedved, who scored the pick of the five goals against Lecce, still has a sour taste in his match following their European exit and insists the next two matches are vitally important if his side are going to claim the Scudetto back from rivals Milan.

"Even though we've got three more points than AC Milan, I'm not satisfied because of the Champions league elimination," said the Czech International. "I've now watched the second leg three times and I'm still sad, but only great teams like Juventus can have a great reaction like Sunday against Lecce.

"Now we have to face Inter and Lazio, two very important matches which could both be decisive games for us, before the huge match against AC Milan on May 8 at the San Siro."

Fabio Cappello's squad is set to be unchanged from that at the weekend with only defender Jonathan Zebina and striker David Trezeguet unavailable because of injury.

Inter, meanwhile, have two further injury worries to add to their woes with defender Marco Materazzi (knee) out for five days while midfielder Andy van der Meyde (leg) could be sidelined for up to two months, both joining long-term casualties Alvaro Recoba and Adriano.

But coach Roberto Mancini is boosted by the return of Belozoglu Emre and Dejan Stankovic to the squad after both came through a training match unscathed. In attack, Christian Vieri, who was used as a second-half substitute at the weekend, is likely to partner Obafemi Martins with Julio Cruz dropping to the bench.

Club president Giacinto Facchetti was happy with Inter's reaction on the pitch against Cagliari following the Champions League saga. "Psychologically it was a difficult match," he said. "It was difficult to be motivated after what had happened, but the team gave a good reaction against a difficult team in Cagliari.

"In the last 19 matches we have collected the same number of points as Milan and Juventus. And this means that the gap which accumulated in the first 13 matches was decisive."

Capello demands Derby focus

Football Italia

Juventus boss Fabio Capello has asked for concentration as his side prepare to face Inter in the Derby d’Italia on Wednesday. The Bianconeri are now in control of the Scudetto race after moving three points clear of Milan, but Capello wants his men to remained focused so close to the end of the campaign.

"We’ll play against Inter with no thoughts about Milan in our minds," stated the tactician. "There are seven games left, one more difficult than the previous one. Every side in the Division has got something to play for, whether it be survival, the UEFA Cup or the Champions’ League.

"It would be ideal for us to go into the away game at Milan with our three point advantage still intact."

The Nerazzurri are out of the Scudetto race but the Delle Alpi boss expects a tough game tomorrow night. "They are always difficult to play against," he warned. "Even if our League position allows us to play with a certain amount of tranquillity."

Capello is also looking for his men to make amends for the first game between the two clubs, when Juve surrendered a two goal lead in the 2-2 San Siro draw.

"We gave them oxygen back then," Capello continued. "We had closed the game but then allowed them back in. Inter have some great players who can change any game in an instant. They still have some important champions."

Juventus have named a 19-man squad for the tie but David Trezeguet, Ciro Ferrara, Jonathan Zebina and Paolo Montero are absent with injury. Emerson is included but Capello won’t make a decision on his use until just before kick-off.

Squad: Buffon, Chimenti; Pessotto, Birindelli, Zambrotta, Thuram, Cannavaro, Masiello; Tacchinardi, Emerson, Nedved, Camoranesi, Appiah, Blasi, Kapo, Olivera; Ibrahimovic, Del Piero, Zalayeta.

Zlatan aims for greatness

Sky Sports

Juventus' Zlatan Ibrahimovic is keen to score the goal that would take him level with Michel Platini's tally for his first season in Turin. Ibrahimovic has had a sensational impact in Italy, scoring 15 times so far and needing just one to equal iconic Juve legend Platini's opening salvo in his first season.

Although he will not catch Welshman John Charles' record of 28 goals in his first season, the Swedish star has outlined the approach that has made him such a hit.

"I'm not scared of anything and I always play to win even when people think you cannot," explained Ibrahimovic to La Stampa. "If you don't aim high then you will never amount to anything. The thing that gives me the most satisfaction is surprising the opponent.

"I have always said that I want to be the world's strongest player. I don't understand how people can enjoy themselves if they don't have big goals. I think like the complete centre forward. I like scoring goals and I like setting them up as well.

"There isn't a particular thing I prefer. Since I have been at Juve I have been seen as a different kind of forward. I play for one of the biggest and most famous clubs, and this counts."

Vieri To Juve Rumours Back

Goal.com

Christian Vieri is being linked to a return to Juventus by Italian daily ‘Tuttosport’. The Bianconeri are looking for a valid replacement for their Swedish star Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who with the fifteen goals scored this season has proven to have transformed himself in a true goal-bagger.

Vieri’s days at Inter appear numbered, especially because the Milan club have chosen Adriano-Martins as their offensive duo for the next years, and have therefore decided not to renew Bobo’s contract that expires in 2006.

Vieri’s form has also been extremely poor throughout the past year, and his close advisors believe a move to Juventus could work miracles for him, as it did for Cannavaro.

Chelsea pressure could see Juventus rip up Mutu deal

Tribal Football

Juventus may seek to end the contract of striker Adrian Mutu if his former club, Chelsea, are given the green light to pursue an £8 million compensation claim. A tribunal will hand down their ruling this week on Chelsea's intentions of suing Mutu for £8 million damages after he was axed earlier this season for failing a drugs test.

Juve have since snapped up the Romanian on a free transfer, but could be forced to cough up the fee if Chelsea win their case. Indeed, if Chelsea do win, its been suggested in Italy that Juve will seek to terminate Mutu's contract as they are not interested in paying anything for the striker.

A decision over Chelsea's case will be made public this week.

Leeds in Juventus talks over player link-up

Tribal Football

Leeds United are in talks with Juventus about a player exchange program.

Elland Road manager Kevin Blackwell flew to Turin last week to finalise a deal to take three or four top prospects on loan next season. Blackwell met a Juve delegation in England and then went to Italy to see some of the youngsters and firm up the arrangement.

Juve have tried to forge links with English clubs in the past without success but the idea of loaning some of their fringe players appeals to them. For cash-strapped Leeds it is a great way of getting promising talent for the Championship without forking out a fortune.

Agent denies house sale for Roma striker Cassano

Tribal Football

The agent of AS Roma striker Antonio Cassano has denied reports that the youngster has put his house on the market. It emerged over the weekend that Cassano was selling his villa, fueling talk of an imminent switch to Juventus.

But Giuseppe Bozzo said yesterday: "There has been months of speculation around the name of Cassano, which has been lacking in every foundation. Now enough is enough! No decision exists in order to sell the house of Antonio. With the club, there has been no new talks, we continue to wait to be summoned to speak with them."

Cassano's contract expires in 2006, meaning this summer's transfer market represents the last period Roma have to make money on his transfer should they not offer the striker new terms.

Juventus - Inter

Football Italia

The Derby d’Italia is upon us once again and the stakes couldn’t be higher for Juventus. Having finally claimed top spot outright, the Bianconeri will be desperate to remain there. But standing in their way are an Inter side fresh from a morale boosting 2-0 win over Cagliari. The Nerazzurri are unbeaten in five against the Old Lady, with each game producing at least four goals.

This season’s previous encounter at the San Siro was arguably the best game of the campaign, as Inter fought back from 2-0 down to secure a 2-2 draw. But it was the manner in which they achieved the result that was most impressive – Roberto Mancini finished the game with Adriano, Alvaro Recoba, Christian Vieri and Obafemi Martins all on the pitch at full-time.

Both teams go into the game in fine domestic form, despite their Champions’ League woes. Juve are currently on an eight match unbeaten run, while Inter have won three on the bounce. And neither Coach has any major selection headaches for the clash, with Juve’s only change likely to be Emerson for Alessio Tacchinardi. The Nerazzurri must do without the injured Marco Materazzi so Ivan Cordoba steps into his boots and Christian Vieri should be fit to start, leaving Julio Cruz to warm the bench.

Juventus (probable): Buffon; Pessotto, Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Appiah, Emerson, Nedved; Del Piero, Ibrahimovic

Inter (probable): Toldo; J Zanetti, Cordoba, Mihajlovic, Favalli; Ze Maria, Veron, Cambiasso, Kily Gonzalez; Martins, Vieri

Player of the Week: Ibrahimovic (Juventus)

Football Italia

If there was one criticism of the way that the impressive Zlatan Ibrahimovic has settled into the world of Italian football, it was his lack of deadliness in front of goal. But five goals in his last two League games have given some substance to the claims that Juventus have indeed signed the new Marco Van Basten.

Ibrahimovic has enjoyed a splendid first season in Serie A since his £11m move from Ajax on transfer deadline day in the summer. Although he had been linked with the Turin giants for some time and had caught the eye with that back-heeled stunner against Italy at Euro 2004, not too many expected the Swede to be so super.

It can even be argued that he arrived at the Delle Alpi as third choice attacker behind David Trezeguet and Alex Del Piero. That statement seems laughable right now because the youngster is undoubtedly the first name down on the team-sheet when Fabio Capello ponders his offensive options. Who knows where Juve’s Scudetto bid would be without him?

Ibrahimovic seems well on the way to becoming a complete striker. He’s got power, some great technical ability – which is a hindrance at times seeing as he does overindulge in the sublime – and now an eye for goal.

Although he has incredibly failed to score in the Champions’ League this term, Ibrahimovic is his side’s top scorer in Serie A with 15. That’s the same amount as Adriano and just one shy of Parma’s Alberto Gilardino – the player Juve opted to ‘ignore’ on the transfer market in August.

The Scandinavian ace already netted a brace last weekend during the 3-3 draw at Fiorentina before his latest heroics on Sunday. With Del Piero suffering another anonymous afternoon and Trezeguet ruled out with injury yet again, the spotlight was well and truly on Ibrahimovic who netted a hat-trick in the 5-2 destruction of Lecce.

It was a performance which took his side back to the top of the table and a display which won wide praise from a club, who some thought had taken a gamble on such an individual. "He is a complete player who can score from any angle and by any method," said director general Luciano Moggi, the man responsible for his capture. "Ibrahimovic is an important player for not only the present but also for the future of Juventus."

Although it’s always difficult to speculate what Juventus’ summer transfer plans are, as Ibrahimovic’s surprise signing itself illustrates, there seems no doubt that Ibra is a player the Old Lady are counting on for some time to come. It is more likely that Del Piero and Trezeguet will leave Turin before this striker heads for the exit.

Substitution saddens Del Piero

Football Italia

Juventus are back in control of the Scudetto race but captain Alessandro Del Piero is not a happy man. The No 10 left the Delle Alpi with a long face on Sunday after he was substituted at half-time during the 5-2 win over Lecce.

"It is clear that Del Piero wasn’t happy but the fact that players are replaced is part of the game," stated director general Luciano Moggi. "We know that Alex is a champion and that is clear by the amount of goals he has scored this season.

"There are no doubts over his ability as a player, but when he’s not in great form then it is right that he is substituted."

The Italian has been recalled to the bench frequently this term, after seemingly failing to convince boss Fabio Capello of his ability. Although Del Piero has scored 15 goals – 12 in the League, three in Europe – he has only finished five Serie A games and two Champions’ League matches.

"I decided to take Del Piero off at half-time after evaluating the first 45 minutes," explained Capello yesterday evening. "I have a squad at my disposal and that is what I base my team selections on, even if I can make mistakes."

Capello was perhaps hinting at the fact that Marcelo Zalayeta, who replaced Del Piero, didn’t have a great game against Lecce.

Scudetto twist delights Capello

Football Italia

Juventus boss Fabio Capello admits that the current League table brings a smile to his face. The Bianconeri are now clear at the top of the Division after their win over Lecce coincided with Milan’s shock 2-1 loss at Siena.

"It is very satisfying to look at the standings right now," stated the tactician. "Milan’s defeat illustrates that there are no easy games. Right now every club in the Division has something to play for, whether it be the Champions’ League, the UEFA Cup or survival."

The Bianconeri themselves fell a goal behind to Lecce at the Delle Alpi, but won 5-2 thanks to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s hat-trick.

"I’m satisfied because we have shown that we are physically in good shape and showed character," continued the tactician. "We were able to take advantage of some of Lecce’s poor awareness even if we suffered at times."

The win was also of vital importance given that it came so soon after the Champions’ League elimination to Liverpool.

"They went through because they basically played catenaccio against us," Capello highlighted. "Our elimination has more to do with the loss in Liverpool, even if we went into the return game thinking that we could score at any time."

Juventus chief Moggi backs Del Piero substitution

Tribal Football

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi has sided with coach Fabio Capello over the substitution of Alessandro del Piero in Sunday's win over Lecce. Del Piero's future at Juve remains in question as speculation over the weekend had AS Roma striker Antonio Cassano preparing to shift houses to Turin.

Moggi said: "Del Piero was obviously unhappy with the substitution, I can be in agreement on that. But we know that he is a champion, you only have to consider how many goals he has made this year, despite having not played a lot.

"But if he does not play well, it is right that he is replaced, we have a bench and it must be used if there is a need."

Moggi: Scudetto? We’re Not Convinced Of Winning It

Goal.com

The Juventus General Director is not yet sure that the Bianconeri can beat Milan in the title race.

The Old Lady beat Lecce 5-2 at the Delle Alpi and took full advantage of the Rossoneri’s 2-1 defeat at Siena to open a 3 point lead over Milan at the top of Serie A. However, an unusually insecure Luciano Moggi did not want to talk about Scudetto yet as he believes that it is still too early to celebrate.

“The Champions League causes fatigue; just look what happened to Milan yesterday. It’s important that Juve showed its strength yesterday but we are not convinced of winning the Scudetto. We have an advantage which can mean a lot, but nothing is set in stone.”

Serie A resumes this Wednesday with Juventus and Milan hosting respectively Inter and Chievo.

Juventus chief Moggi: Inter Milan can call me

Tribal Football

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi refuses to offer himself to Inter Milan. Inter supremo Massimo Moratti has been a long time admirer of Moggi's and would love to take him to the San Siro to overhaul his underperforming squad.

But the Juve chief said: "If someone is interested me, they should call me. It's always nice to know that the job you're doing is appreciated. But, and I repeat myself, I am happy at Juve, where I am also part of the board of directors.

"I do not know about changing, but I appreciate Inter and admire Moratti very much."

Juventus chief confirms "English interest" for Appiah

Tribal Football

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi has confirmed inquiries from England have arrived for midfielder Stephen Appiah. The Ghana international has been scouted by Birmingham City and Middlesbrough in recent weeks and was the subject of an approach from Everton in January.

"On Appiah, there is concrete interest from Italy and England," revealed Moggi yesterday. Juve want a straight cash deal, while a Boro delegation was in Turin last Wednesday seeking an agreement over a season-long loan.

Nedved retracts quit threat

Sky Sports

Czech star Pavel Nedved has confirmed that he will see out his contract with Juventus after previously hinting he may retire at the end of the season.

Nedved made the shock announcement after enduring a frustrating spell of injury, although has now found renewed determination to carry on with the Serie A leaders in a bid to win Europe's premier prize with the Bianconeri.

Juventus were denied by Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League quarter final last week, and Nedved has a personal quest to claim the title after missing the 2003 final against Milan due to suspension. The 32-year-old has matured into one of world football's finest attacking players, and the Juve faithful will no doubt be delighted that Nedved has decided to prolong his career despite his recent run of injuries.

"I've decided to stay until the end of my deal, I want to try once again and try to give my help to win the Champions League in Bianconeri's jersey," Nedved told Gazzetta dello Sport. "I am hoping not to have the problems that have conditioned me during this season.

"After a similar period it isn't easy finding themselves again, but now I feel better and it's normal my performances are improving."

Nedved also insisted that the only way to make up for the disappointment of the exit to Liverpool would be to claim the Serie A title, a prospect that looks more likely after the weekend's fixtures. Milan lost surprisingly to Siena whilst Nedved scored as Juventus overcame Lecce 5-2 in Turin, and their inspirational midfielder is determined to secure the league title after the European exit.

"Wednesday's match against Liverpool left me very disappointed," Nedved continued. "Only a scudetto win could repay this bitterness, otherwise it won't be important and also the goal scored against Lecce counts not so much."

Trezeguet: I’d Like To Play With Henry At Club Level

Goal.com

Juventus striker David Trezeguet says he would one day like to play with France team-mate Thierry Henry at club level. "We have a perfect understanding, so yes, of course, that would be nice," he told World Soccer.

"Sometimes when we talk we say that we have to play together again. I am sure it will happen, but I can’t say where." On a future move to the Premiership, Trezeguet added: "It would be nice to play in England, why not? But there are other countries in Europe I like such as Spain and, of course, Italy"

Lazio's Giannichedda confirms Juventus move

Tribal Football

Lazio midfielder Giuliano Giannichedda has confirmed one of the worst kept secrets in Italian football - he's on his way to Juventus in the summer. Giannichedda chose to break ranks yesterday after weeks of speculation that he had agreed to join Juve next season on a Bosman.

Lazio president Claudio Lotito threw everything but the kitchen sink at Giannichedda, including the option of a role with the club after he retires.

But the midfielder confirmed yesterday: "I will give my best for Lazio until June. I have not reached an agreement with the Biancocelesti and if I must consider another a team, I consider myself joining Juve, even if there is nothing official to say on this at the moment."

AC Milan offer for PSV's Van Bommel

Tribal Football

AC Milan chief Ariedo Braida has approached the representatives of PSV Eindhoven captain Mark van Bommel. The Holland international is off contract in the summer and will leave PSV on a Bosman at the end of this season.

Braida is said to have made a three-year contract offer to Van Bommel's agents, worth £2 million-a-season. The midfielder has also held talks with Barcelona and is a target for Tottenham.

Capello back in the saddle

Football Italia

Fabio Capello is not letting Juve’s Champions’ League exit get him down and insists it gives them the edge in the Scudetto race.

“I saw my players were very disappointed after the game with Liverpool, but now we’re back in the saddle and the lads are in the right frame of mind,” explained the Coach.

“Our approach to the Liverpool tie was a mistake and we went on to the pitch assuming that sooner or later we would score. As the clock ticked on and the goal didn’t arrive, we became frustrated. The Premiership side deserves praise for its performance, but if we had played in that style we’d have been labelled purveyors of Catenaccio.”

Injuries are piling up on the Bianconeri and they welcome Lecce without Jonathan Zebina, David Trezeguet and possibly Emerson. The Frenchman’s ongoing fitness worries have prompted stories that Juve will cash in on him with a summer sale to Barcelona.

“Trezeguet has given important signals he wishes to stay and we are counting on him,” said Capello, who convinced him to remain in Turin this season. “He is a very useful player in the box, but unfortunately this inflammation in his ankle is worse than previously thought. I hope he can recover for the final two games.”

Following their 3-3 draw at Fiorentina last week, Juventus cannot afford another slip and take on Zdenek Zeman’s exciting Lecce outfit.

“It won’t be easy, especially as our squad has shrunk of late and I cannot rest any of my stars. Lecce always go on the attack and move the ball around quickly, but there is no personal battle here. It is Juventus-Lecce, not Capello vs. Zeman, and we have a normal rapport as colleagues.”

Juventus 5 - 2 Lecce

Football Italia

Ibrahimovic standing proud

Zlatan Ibrahimovic bagged a hat-trick to demolish Lecce and give Juventus a three-point lead at the top thanks to Milan's shock defeat at Siena.

Juve's shock Champions' League exit to Liverpool midweek left the Scudetto as their only shot at some silverware this season, so beating Lecce was imperative. They faced Zdenek Zeman, the Coach who sparked the doping trial with his comments and made his first visit to the Delle Alpi since 1999, but both teams had injury concerns.

David Trezeguet and Jonathan Zebina are out for another three weeks, while Emerson was struggling with a muscular problem. Lecce had to reshuffle their midfield with Cristian Ledesma and Sasa Bjelanovic absent, so Marco Cassetti moved up from full-back to winger.

It was Lecce who took a shock lead after six minutes. A defensive error allowed Alex Pinardi to spring the offside trap and he intelligently chipped the ball over a helpless Gigi Buffon for Mirko Vucinic to score with a bicycle-kick.

Juve took their time to muster a reaction until Zlatan Ibrahimovic's low strike was gripped between Vincenzo Sicignano's knees in an unorthodox save.

The Bianconeri drew level moments later thanks to the disastrous Lecce offside trap. Stephen Appiah sprinted forward on Alessio Tacchinardi's pass from practically the centre circle and chipped the goalkeeper to finalise the move.

Lecce were not awed by playing in Turin and a low Vucinic strike was fingertipped round the post before Suleymane Diamoutene's free header was wide. Soon after, a fast-paced Marco Cassetti counter-attack caused more problems only for Guillermo Giacomazzi to fire over the bar.

Vucinic hooked down a Sicignano clearance and fired over the bar in an example of route one football. But it was Juventus who turned the result around, perhaps against the run of play, when Ibrahimovic again sprung the offside trap 30 metres from goal and ran rings around the goalkeeper to score.

Moments later Buffon rushed off his line to save from Vucinic, but it wouldn't have counted anyway as he was offside. Nedved's cross reached Del Piero and his header was off target.

Buffon was working overtime and required a double save to keep out Jaime Valdes, but Juventus extended their lead on the stroke of half-time. Nedved sprinted through the centre and set up Ibrahimovic for a powerful angled drive.

Valdes limped off and Lecce introduced Axel Konan in first half stoppages, while Del Piero wasted a golden opportunity as he hesitated and saw his shot charged down.

Fabio Capello chose to leave Del Piero on the sidelines for the second half and threw on Marcelo Zalayeta. It was Pavel Nedved who put the win beyond doubt with Juve's fourth goal, pulling away from defenders before unleashing a rocket from 20 metres that beat Sicignano at the near post.

Lecce should've made it 4-2 in the closing stages, but Konan had a goal controversially disallowed for an offside position. Instead, Ibrahimovic completed his hat-trick with a splendid curling finish from the far corner of the area that slotted in at the far post.

The action still wasn't over, as in the final minutes referee Matteo Simone Trefoloni pointed to the spot for Fabio Cannavaro's challenge on Konan, though it was probably a harsh decision. Sam Dalla Bona converted the first Serie A penalty awarded against Juve in over a year.

Juventus: Buffon; Pessotto (Birindelli 78), Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Appiah, Tacchinardi (Blasi 57), Nedved; Del Piero (Zalayeta 46), Ibrahimovic

Lecce: Sicignano; Diamoutene, Paci, Stovini, Rullo; Cassetti (Eremenko 79), Dalla Bona, Giacomazzi; Valdes (Konan 45), Vucinic, Pinardi (Mattioli 72)

Post-match Comments

Fabio Capello: “I think that we have always shown that our fitness levels are good and that we can step up the pace in the second half. The Liverpool exit is in the past now and our defeat there was due to a psychological approach rather than a physical one. We had a rough start today, but were able to recover from that.”

Moggi answers Juve critics

Football Italia

Director General Luciano Moggi has used Juve’s newfound Serie A leadership to hit back at those who suggested the club had miscalculated this campaign.

“We now have the opportunity to work with an advantage over Milan, but the Scudetto race is far from over,” warned the transfer guru after they went three points clear at the top.

The Bianconeri had been bitterly criticised in the Italian Press this week after their sluggish European exit at the hands of Liverpool, but came back to beat Lecce 5-2 this afternoon.

“After the Champions’ League elimination we went back to a performance like the one you all saw today. The players proved what a great side this is and how mentally strong they are to react to this setback.”

Moggi was one of the main club representatives blamed for their Champions’ League slip because of the lack of quality alternatives available to Fabio Capello.

“The Juventus bench is as full as it needs to be and that should be evident by the fact we’re clear at the top of the table despite having David Trezeguet and Pavel Nedved out for most of the campaign,” insisted Moggi.

“Stephen Appiah is one of our squad players, yet we are inundated with offers for his services from Italy and England. Now it’s fashionable for people to say you need at least two whole line-ups, but there are other clubs with three entire sides who have been left behind.”

Adrian Mutu has already been snapped up and there are strong reports that Shabani Nonda and Robert Kovac also have deals in the bag, but Moggi is keeping tight-lipped.

“Juve have some talented youth team players – such as Masiello – who are breaking through and will make their mark next year.”

Capello: “Great reaction”

Juventus.com

“We struggled sometimes, as we conceded too much at start. We came to this match after a hard time, the exit from Champions League cannot be easily wiped away, moreover we found ourselves one goal down right away.. then our character came out”.

Fabio Capello is satisfied not only with the convincing win but also with Juventus’s reaction, able to catch up with one goal down and overcome Lecce: “We were frightened at first and Vucinic’s position caused us some problem, then their goal shook up. It was important to react like we did, like it was recovering

“Nedved: I saw him much determined in tackles and he scored a beautiful goal from outside the box, he needed that.”

This Sunday saw Milan fall at Siena and now the Bianconeri move three precious points clear: “Psychologically, it’s an important advantage – Capello continued – anyway there are too many matches to play to say these points will be decisive.

“On paper, we have the hardest schedule, although every single match is difficult: all clubs are in good conditions, they run a lot and you must play every match to the bitter end, because your opponents will be prepared to give all they can.

“You need great determination every time you get on the playground and you must not think about the table.”

Nedved: “I’m recovering my condition”

Juventus.com

“I’m progressing. Obviously, it’s not easy to get back after over two months out and play every three days, however I’m recovering my condition, step by step.”

Pavel Nedved was one of the authors of the win against Lecce with a powerful performance, running a lot but also playing with quality, like Ibrahimovic’s assists or his own goal scored with a classy right-footed shot from outside the box.

“To assist is my job and I’m always happy when I can make my team-mates score goals. Today’s win is very important, as it came after Wednesday’s disappointment and I can assure you that it was not easy to get on the field today with our minds free of that.

“That’s why I think all the team deserves a big round of applause for having been capable of such reaction.”

Thuram calls for tougher stance

Football Italia

Juventus defender Lilian Thuram wants to see heavier punishments issued to individuals who make racist remarks, singling Spain boss Luis Aragones out for criticism. The former France stalwart is furious that Aragones received a relatively small fine for comments he allegedly made about Thierry Henry during a Spain training session.

“It’s scandalous,” Thuram fumed. “The worst thing is that Luis Aragones has not been sacked because the people who judged him think that his offence is not serious. It makes me think that in Spain insulting a black person is regarded as nothing," he added.

Thuram extended his outburst to the former Bastia Coach François Ciccolini, who allegedly made a racist remark to Paris Saint-Germain’s Albanian midfielder Lorik Cana during a recent Ligue 1 match.

“It’s the same in France,” the veteran defender continued. “A Coach can call a player ‘a dirty Albanian’ without losing his job. The racism isn’t just in the stands, it's present in society. If the problem is not sorted out in society first, it will always creep into the stadia."

Crocked Trezeguet: I want Juventus stay

Tribal Football

Crocked Juventus striker David Trezeguet has dismissed reports linking him with Barcelona. The French international has been ruled out for the season after breaking down with an ankle injury and his future at the Turin giants has been questioned because of his fitness problems.

"My job is not on the line," he insisted. "I am already working towards next season. "I have not spoken with anyone from the club and do not know if they have an intention to sell me. I want to stay, for sure, and not leave. I want to repay the confidence of my teammates and the trainer."

Fiorentina president confirms Juventus talks over Chiellini

Tribal Football

Fiorentina will hold talks with Juventus next month over defender Giorgio Chiellini. The Italy international right-back is co-owned by the two clubs and has thrived this season in Florence.

"We will do everything in order to hold onto Chiellini and for sure we will try until the end to keep him," said Fiorentina president Andrea Delle Valle. "We are hopeful. We will have to meet with the Bianconeri leaders towards the 1st of May. And on this occasion we will talk also about Miccoli and Maresca."

Boro check on Appiah

Sky Sports

Middlesbrough’s trip to Turin in midweek was reportedly to check on Juventus star Stephen Appiah. Boro boss Steve McClaren travelled to Italy with chief executive Keith Lamb to watch Juve's UEFA Champions League clash with Liverpool.

It is now claimed that former Parma star Appiah was the reason for the trip and talks with high-ranking Bianconeri officials took place about the highly-rated Ghanaian's availability.

Boro are believed to have received a positive response and could look to seal a deal, which may be a loan to start off with - although Juve may want a straight cash move, and Birmingham are also said to be showing an interest.

Igor Tudor, currently with on loan at Siena, is also rumoured to have been asked about by Lamb and McClaren.

McClaren is looking to add some real depth to his squad and midfield seems to be his priority, with talks already ongoing with Austrian Rene Aufhauser and rumours of a loan deal for Manchester United's Darren Fletcher persisting.

Birmingham scout Juventus striker Zalayeta

Tribal Football

Birmingham City boss Steve Bruce is considering a move for Juventus striker Marcelo Zalayeta. Bruce was in Turin last week to see Juventus play Liverpool in the Champions League and had hoped to run his eye over the Uruguay international.

Zalayeta only made a late appearance as a second-half substitute, but has been recommended to Bruce by countryman Walter Pandiani. Birmingham are in the market for a new striker and Bruce is eyeing Zalayeta as an alternative to Newcastle United's Craig Bellamy.

Roma's Cassano puts house up for sale

Tribal Football

AS Roma striker Antonio Cassano has put the family home on the market. The revelation has fueled speculation that Cassano will quit Roma in the summer - particularly as the house up for sale is where his mother resides.

"Whenever they talk about me leaving Roma," Cassano revealed recently, "my Mum always cries. She is a bigger fan of Roma than Bari. "I know it will be a problem for her if I ever left Roma."

Juventus are clear favourites to land Cassano, who has just over a year left on his current contract. The Turin giants are expected to offer Adrian Mutu to Roma in part-exchange for Cassano.

Juventus v Lecce: Preview

ESPN Soccernet

Juventus are hoping to bounce back from their Champions League elimination by flying solo in the Serie A standings. All eyes are set on Fabio Capello's men when they return to action at the Delle Alpi for the league game against Lecce.

The team's morale has suffered a blow after their disappointing performance in Wednesday's goalless draw against Liverpool, that saw the Turin giants knocked out of the top European competition at the quarter-final stage following their 2-1 defeat in the first leg.

"The Champions League was one of our main priorities this season," admitted coach Capello. "I hope that we can forget this game as soon as possible because the rest of the campaign depends on how we absorb this defeat."

A win on Sunday would lift the morale of his players, who are still trying to come to terms with the fact that it will be Liverpool to face Chelsea in the last four and not them.

"We have to defend the first position at all costs," said captain Alessandro Del Piero. "The season grants us another opportunity and that is the Scudetto."

But to add salt to Juve's wound, arch-rivals AC Milan will now have to defend Italy's pride in the competition after Carlo Ancelotti's men advanced to the semi-finals at the expense of Internazionale.

The Scudetto would no doubt be a big consolation for the Bianconeri, who can now save all their energies for what is set to be a busy few weeks, with Inter and Lazio awaiting them before their clash against direct rivals Milan on May 8.

"Who knows, maybe this elimination will allow us to win the league title," said Juve's general director Luciano Moggi, who gave a vote of confidence to Capello after the former Roma coach received criticism from the fans following Wednesday's European exit.

"Capello will remain with us next season," said Moggi. "I can guarantee it 110%."

But the Scudetto is by no means a guarantee for the Bianconeri, with Milan, who are level on 67 points with Juve, looking to have come out stronger from this week's action. The Rossoneri, who take on Siena on Sunday, will be looking to keep up the pace with Juve until the very end.

Not even the fact of facing a demoralised Juve is a consolation for Lecce, who travel to the Piemonte region without their captain Cristian Ledesma, who is out of action with a leg injury.

"Ledesma's absence is a big blow for us," said playmaker Samuele Dalla Bona, who is set to replace Ledesma. "He is our guiding star on the pitch and it will not be easy to play against Juve without him."

Zdenek Zeman's outfit, who drew 2-2 against Siena last week, have nothing to play for except their pride, with their current 10th position having virtually secured their Serie A status for next season. Juve will be without French striker David Trezeguet who is struggling with an ankle injury.

Trez thanks patient Juve

Football Italia

David Trezeguet has spoken of his continuing injury worries and insists he wants to stay on and repay Juve for their confidence in him. “For now all I can do is concentrate on getting better and I have to forget about football for a while,” said the Frenchman. "It's best to start looking ahead to the next season."

The former Monaco striker has been beset by injuries throughout his Juventus career, but this season has included shoulder surgery and a recurring ankle inflammation that has ruled him out for the next three weeks.

“I tried until the last minute to be ready for the game against Liverpool, but the pain was just too great and I had to give up,” he confided. This latest setback has prompted Press stories that the Bianconeri will cash in on Trezeguet in the summer with a move to Barcelona, replacing him with Monaco’s Shabani Nonda.

“I can assure you that I want to stay on at Juventus and return to winning ways in Turin,” insisted Trez. “I have to repay the faith that this club has shown in me.”

Meanwhile, Juve have confirmed that they will visit Japan on their summer tour from June 1 to 7 with games against Yokohama Marinos and FC Tokyo in the Yamazaki Nabisco Cup. A Juventus Soccer School will also be created in Mexico City.

Capello: Juventus must bounce back

Tribal Football

Juventus are aiming for three points today against Lecce after their Champions League exit last week.

"The Champions League was one of our main priorities this season," admitted coach Fabio Capello.

Real Madrid approach Arsenal for Vieira

Tribal Football

Real Madrid have made a fresh approach to Arsenal for captain Patrick Vieira. The News of the World says Real chiefs have again asked the Gunners about Vieira's availability after becoming aware of hints of discontent coming from the player's camp.

Vieira is demanding manager Arsene Wenger spend big in the summer market to finally put a squad together capable of lifting the Champions League. Real almost landed Vieira last summer before the Gunners skipper committed to a new deal.

Chelsea set for victory in case against Juventus striker Mutu

Tribal Football

Chelsea are set to win round one of their compensation case against Juventus striker Adrian Mutu. The Blues are suing Mutu for millions of pounds in damages after he tested positive for cocaine. The Premier League Appeals Committee will rule this week whether Mutu broke FIFA regulations by being in "unilateral breach of his contract without just cause".

A source close to the case has told The Sunday Telegraph that it is "favourable to Chelsea".

If they win the case, Chelsea are likely to ask FIFA for about £8 million in compensation, the amount he may have been worth on the transfer market. FIFA could decide that Juventus, Mutu's new club, are liable for compensation.

Juve dismiss Capello exit

Football Italia

Fabio Capello will continue as Juventus boss next season despite their Champions’ League elimination. The tactician has been linked with a switch to Real Madrid, a move that could potentially happen if the Bianconeri now fail to also win the Scudetto.

But the club insist that they have no plans to make a coaching change at the end of the current campaign. "I’m 100 percent certain that Capello will be the Juventus Coach next season," stated director general Luciano Moggi. "I have no doubts about that at all."

The Old Lady’s European exit has cost the outfit around £10m which could affect the club’s transfer strategy.

"We’ll think about what to do about our squad for next season after the game against Lazio (on April 24)," he added. "But I think we just need a few little touches. We certainly need to add a little quality but nothing drastic needs changing.

"If you change five or six first team players at once then you won’t win anything."

The 2-1 aggregate defeat to Liverpool was a massive blow but Moggi is seeing the bright side. "Our progress in Europe isn’t bad," he added. "We got to the Second Round last year, the quarter-finals this term, next year we will get to the last four before winning it in two years time"

Now Juve are just focusing on beating Milan to the Italian title. "We shouldn’t panic unless it goes badly against Lecce on Sunday," noted the official. "We are first at the minute with the best attack and the second best defence. The championship race has never been as exciting as this."

Juventus chief Moggi: Capello is safe

Tribal Football

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi insists the current squad is strong enough - and rejected reports that coach Fabio Capello could be on his way at the end of this season. Juve face ending the season trophyless after this week's elimination from the Champions League, but Moggi said: "The development of the squad is good: it only needs some fine-tuning.

"For sure, we will look to integrate, in terms of quality, some new players, but we do not need to make big changes." On Capello's future, Moggi added: "Capello will stay, on this there are no doubts." Pressed about links with Real Madrid, Moggi replied: "Capello will stay, 100 per cent. Sure he's part of Real Madrid history, but that's all."

Trez future in doubt

Football Italia

Reports in Italy are gathering pace that David Trezeguet will leave Juventus at the end of the season. Unconfirmed whispers in the peninsula claim that his relationship with the outfit is deteriorating and a summer exit is a real possibility.

Trezeguet was already on the verge of quitting the Bianconeri last summer when a move to Barcelona was seemingly already lined up. However, the club decided to extend his contract – which was set to expire in 2006 – at the request of new boss Fabio Capello.

Juventus could now be planning a future without the former Monaco man though after a nightmare campaign at the Delle Alpi. Trezeguet has rarely featured this term as a result of his constant injury problems. He missed three months of the season following shoulder injury, he was then sidelined with a virus and is currently out for 20 days because of an ankle problem.

Juve may now cash in on the striker with Barcelona or a move to the Premiership being touted. The Italian giants are allegedly ready to sacrifice the international given the explosion of Zlatan Ibrahimovic this term. There are even reports that Juve could replace Trezeguet by signing Parma hotshot and Italian international Alberto Gilardino.

Juventus have a reputation for selling big name players after the departures of Roberto Baggio, Zinedine Zidane and Christian Vieri in recent history.

Tribal Football

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi has hinted he will insist on fullback Giorgio Chiellini returning to the club from Fiorentina at the end of this season. "Therefore this may happen."

Fiorentina's Miccoli mocks Juventus over Euro exit

Tribal Football

Fiorentina midfielder Fabrizio Miccoli has taken a swipe at his parent club, Juventus. Miccoli's registration is split between the two Serie A clubs and he was asked about Juve's elimination from the Champions League by Liverpool this week.

"I did not see the game, but I am happy," taunted Miccoli. "It has gone as I hoped."

Juventus to offer Nonda for Parma fullback Bonera

Tribal Football

Juventus are ready to offer AS Monaco striker Shabani Nonda to Parma in exchange for fullback Daniele Bonera. Nonda is joining Juve on a Bosman at the end of this season and reportedly has failed to secure the EU passport, via Portugal, that the Turin giants were demanding he acquire.

The setback for the Congolese will force Juve to seek a co-ownership deal with a Serie A rival and its mooted Nonda will be offered to Parma in part-exchange for Bonera. Parma will be in the market for a new striker over the summer with Alberto Gilardino on his way to AC Milan.

Juventus to ask Lecce about AC Milan target Cassetti

Tribal Football

Juventus will take advantage of this weekend's clash with Lecce to ask about the availability of winger Marco Cassetti. The 27 year-old midfielder is interesting Juve, with an approach expected to be made to Lecce president Rico Semeraro in the next 24 hours.

Cassetti is also on the wanted list of AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani.

Juventus chief serious about Reggina's Mozart

Tribal Football

Despite his joking with journalists this week, Juventus director general Luciano Moggi is seriously considering a bid for Reggina midfielder Mozart at the end of this season. Moggi said on Wednesday: "Mozart to Juve? That's true! Well, it must be true if you're writing about it."

But while he was happy to make light of the story, Moggi is stepping up his interest in Mozart, who he sees as an ideal foil in Juve's midfield to countryman Emerson. Juve have been following Mozart for some years, from way back when he was playing in Brazil for Curtiba and later Flamengo.

Reggina want £6 million for the midfielder and Juve will have a clear path to land Mozart given the excellent relationship between the two clubs.

Inter ponder Evra swoop

Football Italia

Inter, Real Madrid and Barcelona are set to battle it out for Patrice Evra’s signature after the left-back revealed he wants to quit Monaco. Evra signed an extension to his contract earlier in the season, tying him to the club until 2008, but the France international is now ready to move on.

"If the clubs who are interested act in the right way then I will give serious thought to leaving," Evra explained. "My agent has already had contact with some very prestigious clubs. He is working at the moment to get me a good offer this summer. We’ll have to wait and see if things evolve."

Inter, Real and Barca are believed to be the clubs in question. The 23-year-old continued: "The main reason I signed an extension was so that my salary could be increased. "When I signed it we agreed with the directors that if I wanted to leave, they wouldn’t block my path. I am sure that Monaco would respect my choice."

The attacking full-back was an integral part of the Monaco side that reached last season's Champions' League Final and is regarded as one of the finest emerging talents in France. Inter are looking for a new left-back given the inconsistent form of Giuseppe Favalli and Francesco Coco’s injury problems.
