Nedved: "Always victory!"
Juventus.com
Dear supporters,
It’s a very busy week for us. We come from the Champions League’s game against Liverpool, a very tough two faced match. In the first half hour we were in great difficulty, then the true Juventus came out. Determination, concentration and guts: here’s the ingredients to face Fiorentina in the weekend and Liverpool again next Wednesday.
Regarding the championship, nothing new. We continue the race for final victory that sees Juventus and A.C.Milan with same ranking; this means we can’t miss target. The Florence away match will need carefulness both for the team’s quality, of which we know someone well, and for the home squad hot supporters.
We must win, as well as next Wednesday in Champions League, when we’ll meet Liverpool again with a need to reverse the first leg defeat, and with our greatly helpful goal scored at Anfield. About Champions, I looked at the other quarter final games, played on Wednesday. So far, I think that Chelsea and A.C.Milan would be favourite for the semifinals, where obviously we want to advance too.
Best wishes,
Pavel Nedved
Moggi: We’re Stronger Than Liverpool
Goal.com
The Juventus General Director is positive that the Bianconeri can beat Liverpool in Turin and reach the semi finals of the Champions League. Juventus had a poor first half at Anfield but managed to get things back on track with a good second half performance which pleased Luciano Moggi.
“I liked the team at Liverpool. It’s true that the first half was not good but the second half cancelled it, leaving a good taste in our mouths.”
Moggi is confident about the qualification as he is sure that his squad is overall a better side than their English counterparts and hopes that Juve will prove this on the pitch.
“Juventus is stronger than Liverpool, but what I say must be concretized on the pitch. However the willingness and optimism don’t lack. Who thinks positively does not make a mistake.”
Del Piero still hopeful
SkySports
Alessandro Del Piero is optimistic that Juventus can turn around their UEFA Champions League tie with Liverpool. Juventus lost 2-1 at Anfield in the first leg of their quarter final on Tuesday after failing to survive an early onslaught from The Reds.
But Juve responded to hit the woodwork and have a goal disallowed before a Scott Carson mistake enabled Fabio Cannavaro to claw a goal back for the Italians.
Talismanic attacker Del Piero admits Juve struggled early on at Anfield but feels the Turin giants can vanquish Liverpool at Stadio Delle Alpi.
"We entered the pitch with a big emotion," Del Piero told his personal website. "In the first 30 minutes we suffered from their initiative and Liverpool scored twice. Then we hit the post, we missed a big chance and I had a goal disallowed that shouldn't have been.
"In the second half we continued with the pressure although with less chances than in the first half. Anyway we scored a goal and that gives us the possibility to overcome this result in the second leg."
Juve's general manager Luciano Moggi is expecting to see a different team for the second leg next week but felt the side performed with credit at Anfield. Moggi told Gazzetta dello Sport: "I think next week Juve will be another team in comparison to the one we saw in Liverpool.
"Anyway I liked them at Anfield. It's true the first half hasn't been good but the second one deleted that. I liked in particular the reaction after going behind 2-0. We have to play for qualification but I would say on paper we are the favourites."
Cannavaro: "Ready for Florence"
Juventus.com
A few good goals. A few massive goals. Or better, decisive. These are Cannavaro’s. Strange the destiny of this Parthenopean defender. Not really a pure breed goalmaker, but often ready for the winning strike. Hit when badly needed.
So, after the goal that paved the way for the Stadium Olimpico’s win against A.S.Roma, Fabio repeated himself at Anfield Road. Another decisive match on the Bianconeri’s way and another prestigious signature. Fundamental for Liverpool’s cooldown, but mostly in view of the return match scheduled for next Wednesday in Turin.
After all, as in everyone’s hope, if Juventus will step into 2004/05 Champions League semifinals, much would have depended upon his strong header. "Yes, in the season I happened to score important goals – he explained during the press time at Sisport Center -, I even think the one of Tuesday was even more important than the previous."
Right. A score at the best time, on top of Bianconeri’s supremacy, able to react strongly after a difficult match opening. Cannavaro confirms: "They’ve been great early in the game, they took us by surprise with their aggressiveness and we lost rationale. Then, with time going by, we came out creating many dangers.
"This obviously makes us hopeful in view of Turin’s return match. We’re convinced we can reverse the result and go on. Plus, I’d like to have the same sight of Anfield Road’s tiers. Liverpool’s supporters demonstrated great sportsmanship and correctness. Under this point of view, English are role models, for their passion and for a never ending support for their teams."
But before Liverpool Wednesday’s match, we must think about Fiorentina. Italian championship returns after three weeks from the last leg. After the stop for the National team and suspension in honor of Pope John Paul II, we’re back on the field. Such as the distance challenge with A.C.Milan. A face to face that, considering the Rossoneri’s success in the European derby against F.C.Inter, could repeat in Champions League.
"It’s true, we’re still running for the same objectives. In Champions League, they’re currently favourite because the 2-0 gained them a foothold in the semifinals. In the championship we start again evenly. We’ll take on this difficult away match in Florence. The purple team consider the game just like a derby and we have to expect a hotblooded surrounding and a team with an attitude."
Cannavaro supports English fans
Football Italia
Juventus defender Fabio Cannavaro believes Italian fans have a lot to learn from their English counterparts.
"I can understand the bitterness of some of the Bianconeri supporters because it is hard to forget about what happened at Heysel," he said after the events prior to kick-off at Liverpool on Tuesday. "But the English fans at Anfield behaved really well and correctly. The way in which they sang and supported their side until the very end was a spectacle.
"That is a model to follow for fans of every team in Italy, starting from the second leg in Turin."
The stopper was one of the few positives during that 2-1 defeat as his header has kept the Old Lady in the Champions’ League tie.
"I’m lucky to have scored two important goals," he commented following his header at Roma recently. "We can now look forward to the Liverpool game with a little more calm. It won’t be easy as they play with pace but anything can happen."
The Delle Alpi outfit have impressed in defence this term but were caught out twice in the space of 25 minutes by the Reds.
"We struggled to get the ball down and play," explained the summer signing from Inter. "They spent a lot of energy in the first half and paid for that after the break. "We perhaps deserved a little more as we also had a (Alex Del Piero) goal disallowed and we hit the post (through Zlatan Ibrahimovic).
"But it isn’t too bad for us and we have hope for the second game."
Cannavaro was also asked for his thoughts on Milan’s 2-0 win over Inter in the Champions’ League last night. "Inter played the football, while Milan scored the goals," he stated. "The Nerazzurri perhaps deserved a little more."
Zebina awaits test results
Football Italia
Juventus defender Jonathan Zebina will today find out the extent of the hamstring injury he sustained against Liverpool. The French international limped out of the Bianconeri’s 2-1 Champions’ League defeat on Tuesday while attempting to block a Djimi Traore cross.
The former Cagliari and Roma stopper will undergo a scan on Thursday which should reveal how serious the problem is. Zebina is definitely out of the trip to Fiorentina on Saturday and the return against Liverpool next week. Whispers in Turin suggest that he could be sidelined for at least a month, which would be a massive blow to the League leaders.
Boss Fabio Capello only has Alessandro Birindelli as cover at such a crucial stage of the campaign. The tactician could be tempted to switch central defender Lilian Thuram to the right, or even use left-back Gianluca Zambrotta in that position.
Zebina to miss Liverpool tie
Football Italia
Jonathan Zebina has been ruled out of the Liverpool game after tests confirmed that the Juventus stopper has suffered a thigh strain. The Frenchman picked up the injury during the Champions’ League first leg defeat at Anfield on Tuesday.
The right-back will rest for a week, therefore also missing Saturday’s trip to Fiorentina, before undergoing a further scan. Only after those tests can the club pencil in a potential comeback date, even if speculation suggests he will be sidelined for between two and four weeks.
The 26-year-old joined the Turin giants on a free transfer from Roma in the summer and has been a regular in the side. Zebina, who has also featured for Cagliari in Italy, has played 26 Serie A ties and six Champions’ League matches this term.
His place in the stating line-up is now likely to be taken by Alessandro Birindelli, Gianluca Pessotto or Paolo Montero.
London giants wait on Del Piero
Tribal Football
Chelsea have made contact with Juventus about the availability of star striker Alessandro Del Piero. Juve officials have insisted publicly that Del Piero is not for sale, however its reported that the Italy international realises his time at the club could be coming to an end and is considering an overseas move.
Indeed, for the past two weeks Del Piero has been discussing the possibility of moving to London with his inner circle and knows that Chelsea, along with Arsenal and Tottenham, are all keen to lure him to England. Del Piero is contracted to Juve to 2008 and he has instructed agents not to consider offers from the lucrative J-League for the next year - despite mega offers arriving from Yokohama Marinos and Kashima Antlers.
In Italy, Tottenham and Arsenal are expected to make their interest known to Juve and Del Piero before the end of the month.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy wants to make a big-name signing over the summer and considers Del Piero or Real Madrid's Luis Figo to be perfect for his plans. Meanwhile, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger fancies Del Piero as a replacement for homesick Spaniard Jose Reyes and has the money to splash out on the Italian master.
Juventus linked with AEK midfielder Katsouranis
Tribal Football
Juventus have been linked with AEK Athens midfielder Konstantinos Katsouranis. The 26 year-old lifted the European Championship last year with Greece and has just over a year left on his current deal. Juve director general Luciano Moggi is weighing up a move for Katsouranis, with scouts having noted his tens goals in 23 games out of midfield this season.
Bayern Munich seek to block Juventus deal for Kovac
Tribal Football
Bayern Munich have confirmed a new contract offer has been made to defender Robert Kovac. The Croatia international's current deal expires in June and he has been in talks with Juventus about a move to Turin next season.
Bayern chief Uli Hoeness admitted: "We're trying to hold onto Kovac because we think he has amazing potential. It would hurt us if he left. The team wouldn't collapse, but his partnership with Lucio is so strong that we really must try to hold onto him."
Rome sweet home for Chivu
Football Italia
Cristian Chivu will reportedly snub a summer switch by signing a contract extension with Roma. The Romanian, who has recently returned to action after almost nine months on the sidelines, is thought to be high on the list of transfer priorities for Inter, Juventus and Real Madrid.
However, it is believed the former Ajax stopper is happy to stay at the Roman club and will pledge his long-term future with the Giallorossi.
"It is pleasing to know that a lot of important teams are interested in Cristian," stated his agent Andrea Pretti. "Nevertheless, Cristian believes in the club’s project for the future and he wants to stay here."
Pretti himself was spotted at the Trigoria training base on Wednesday where he allegedly started talks with the outfit over a new deal for his client.
Chivu joined Roma in the summer of 2003, when he signed a five-year deal, and was a revelation during his first Serie A season under then boss Fabio Capello. The now Juventus Coach is believed to be keen on having him back at his disposal in Turin next season.
While both Inter and Real would welcome the international in a bid to resolve some of their defensive difficulties.
In other transfer news, Arsenal are being freshly linked with Brescia striker Andrea Caracciolo. The youngster will leave the Stadio Rigamonti in the summer, with the Lombard outfit hoping to net around £8.5m for the former Perugia player.
D'Alessandro dispels reports
SkySports
Wolfsburg midfielder Andres D'Alessandro has dispelled reports he has fallen out with his team-mates and coach Erik Gerets. German media reports hinted the Argentina star wanted to leave the side following a dispute, but he has denied any spat.
"I don't have any problems with the team or the coach so I am going to stay at Wolfsburg. It's not true what some parts of the press have said," said D'Alessandro. "I heard that I was going to leave this team in June or when the season ends but that isn't what I'm thinking about doing at the moment.
"I had dinner with the Gerets and we spoke about the things in which we didn't agree so everything is okay but I never thought about leaving Wolfsburg."
Barca join Ledesma queue
Football Italia
Spanish giants Barcelona have joined a host of Italian clubs in the chase to sign Lecce youngster Cristian Ledesma. Juventus, Milan and Inter have already been strongly linked but Barca are also monitoring the midfielder.
Reports from Spain suggest that Barca have already made enquiries even though the South American recently extended his contract until 2009. Nou Camp boss Frank Rijkaard is believed to have been impressed by Ledesma this term and would welcome his arrival for the 2005-06 campaign.
However, it is no secret that Ledesma is a primary summer transfer target for Italian giants Juventus. Coach Fabio Capello is looking for a new central midfielder to partner Emerson and Ledesma has met with his approval.
It is rumoured that Juve already tried to sign the 23-year-old in January when they offered £3m plus the services of Stephen Appiah. But Lecce decided to keep the Argentine until the end of the season after netting £11m from Fiorentina for Valeri Bojinov.

Juve believe in Euro victory
Football Italia
Alessandro Del Piero and his teammates remain confident of eliminating Liverpool from the Champions’ League, but Jonathan Zebina could be out for some time. Fabio Cannavaro’s away goal in the 2-1 defeat at Anfield Road has given Juventus hope of reaching the semi-finals.
“I am satisfied,” said the defender whose header beat Scott Carson at the near post. “I think this scoreline gives us a great opportunity to turn the tie around, whereas 2-0 would have been very tough. We paid a heavy price for the first 20 minutes, though apart from the goals they didn’t really create many chances.”
Del Piero was substituted yet again in the Champions’ League encounter and explained the reasons behind that sluggish start.
“We were very tense going into the game and were under pressure for the first half-hour,” revealed the captain. “We had a great reaction after that and it’s a shame my goal was incorrectly disallowed for offside. The 2-1 result gives us the chance to qualify.”
Gianluigi Buffon could do nothing about the volleys from Sami Hyypia and Luis Garcia, but is also in confident mood. “I must compliment Luis Garcia for a stunning strike. A goalkeeper always believes he could’ve done more to prevent goals, but in any case we will have home advantage in the second leg and 2-1 is a good result for us.”
Fabio Capello will have Alessio Tacchinardi back from suspension for next week’s game in Turin, but Jonathan Zebina could be out for some time. The French fullback pulled up with a suspected thigh strain and it’s reported he’ll be sidelined for at least a month.
Juventus eye Arsenal's Vieira as Nedved replacement
Tribal Football
Juventus are keeping tabs on Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira. Vieira, 28, signed a long-term contract last year but Juventus could be ready to make a £20 million-plus summer swoop. Juve chiefs are concerned over the fitness of Pavel Nedved and fear the Czech could be forced to hang up his boots at the end of this season.
The Turin giants know they must land a big-name to replace Nedved and Vieira, who is frustrated at the lack of progress in Europe made by Arsenal, is high on their shopping list.
Rodriguez targets big move
SkySports
Gonzalo Rodriguez has admitted he would love to join a 'big club' in the summer, but is prepared to bide his time with Villarreal. The impressive Argentine centre back, who joined from San Lorenzo last June, has been adapted instantly to life in la Liga turning in a host of commanding displays.
Already a target for Juventus before his switch to Spain, the 20-year-old now counts Barcelona amongst his admirers. The South American concedes he would jump at the chance of a move to one of Europe's top clubs, but insists he is more than happy to remain with Villarreal in the meantime.
"I can't deny that the interest in me from big clubs is something that I like, but I am young, very happy at Villarreal and, for now, my intention is to continue here for many years," he stated. "What I am trying to do is ignore the rumours because they are things that you are not sure will come true, so I don't give them much attention.
"My principal objective is to try and finish this year well and help my team get as far as possible. Then, I can't deny that every player would like to join a big club, but the best way of doing that is to play well for my team and do well at Villarreal in the next few years."
River Plate encourage Fiorentina offer for Mascherano
Tribal Football
River Plate intermediaries have offered star midfielder Javier Mascherano to Fiorentina. The Argentina international is regarded as one of the hottest young talents in South America and recently saw a big-money move to Brazil's Corinthians collapse.
River are desperate to recoup the money lost over the breakdown of Mascherano's switch to Corinthians and have made contact with Fiorentina this week. The Serie A club have been informed they can sign Mascherano, 22, for £9 million.
Italy handed 2012 bid boost
Football Italia
Italy’s chances of hosting Euro 2012 have improved after Romania withdrew their bid for the tournament. Romania have been forced to forget about landing the competition after failing to receive government backing.
"The Federation has sent a letter to UEFA to announce our withdrawal," said Paul Zaharia, a spokesman for the Romanian Football Federation. "This decision has been taken after the government revealed that football was not part of their top 10 priorities."
Italy, Greece, Russia and Turkey, plus Croatia-Hungary and Poland-Ukraine remain in the running.

Liverpool 2 - 1 Juventus
Football Italia

Juve recovered from a dismal first half performance and were unlucky to emerge defeated 2-1 by Liverpool in tonight's quarter-final, as they had a perfectly good goal disallowed.
These two teams met for the first time since the Heysel tragedy and the 20-year anniversary hung heavy over proceedings. There was a minute's silence ahead of kick-off for the 39 fans who died on May 29 1985 and a real feeling of mutual respect between the clubs and their fans at Anfield Road.

Representatives of the two sides, including Ian Rush and Michel Platini, walked out on to the pitch holding banners of friendship.
Pavel Nedved made his comeback after suffering concussion and head trauma in an accidental collision with Real Madrid's Raul Bravo in February, but it was only his second start since January 23 due to a series of injuries. David Trezeguet and Marcelo Zalayeta were not 100 per cent fit, while Alessio Tacchinardi was suspended, so Juve returned to the 4-4-2 system.
Liverpool opted to field young goalkeeper Scott Carson in only his third appearance since joining the club and gave him his Champions' League debut in this high-profile encounter.
Emerson slipped within the first 5 seconds and Milan Baros nearly took full advantage, as his shot was deflected off target. Liverpool had a very aggressive start and were swarming around Juve players when they had the ball.
Gianluca Zambrotta's error allowed Steve Finnan to fire on to the side-netting in another hairy moment for Fabio Capello's men, who were struggling to keep up with the breakneck pace early on.

The pressure paid off after 10 minutes, as a Steven Gerrard corner kick was touched on for the totally unmarked Sami Hyypia at the back post to volley in from six yards.
Carson's first real intervention came after 18 minutes, when the goalkeeper rushed off his line to clear from Zambrotta after some fine work between Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Alessandro Del Piero. But Liverpool were clearly having the better of play and Buffon stuck up a hand to flap away a Baros volley with the Czech at full stretch.
Anthony Le Tallec flung himself at a John Arne Riise cross and just failed to get on the end of it with only Buffon to beat.

Liverpool doubled their lead with a stunning effort from Luis Garcia. The Spaniard's spectacular right-foot half-volley with the outside of his right foot from 30 metres dipped mercilessly under the crossbar with Buffon unable to get a hand to it.
Juventus finally woke up a minute later, but Ibrahimovic's low drive thumped the base of the upright and Nedved's follow-up was off target. Another Baros effort was deflected on to the roof of the net as The Reds kept on coming.
Del Piero and Nedved combined passes brilliantly and the captain's finish was well parried at the near post by Carson as the goalkeeper was finally tested. Gerrard managed to take the ball round Lilian Thuram and Juve were let off as he ballooned his shot over the bar. Buffon also blocked a tame Baros effort.
Zambrotta's fierce strike on the volley was plucked out of the air by a secure Carson and then Del Piero's header hit the back of the net only to be disallowed for an incorrect offside position. Replays clearly show the Juventus star was level with the last defender when the cross came in from Camoranesi.
There was further controversy moments later, as Zambrotta held off his marker and his cross was charged down by Gerrard's arm in the area, but the referee waved play on. Capello had to make changes and introduced Gianluca Pessotto for Manuele Blasi at half-time. The Bianconeri were immediately more aggressive, but Nedved drilled wide from a promising position.
Del Piero was ready to finalise a great team move from Nedved's pass, but he fell in the area with a slight nudge from Traore. Fabio Cannavaro's looping header from a corner kick and a tame Del Piero shot were dealt with by Carson.
David Trezeguet replaced Del Piero on the hour mark, so Capello continued to work with the 4-4-2 system and left Nedved on the field. A powerful but central free kick from Nedved was easily smothered, while Carragher nearly scored an own goal in his attempt to clear Zambrotta's cross.

Juventus were far improved from their first half performance and pulled a goal back on the hour mark. Fabio Cannavaro rose above two defenders to nod in Zambrotta's centre, though Carson seemed to be taken by surprise at the near post.
The confidence shifted towards the Bianconeri and Mauro German Camoranesi's shot whistled past the upright, though Riise's angled drive was deflected just wide. A splendid team move saw Camoranesi dribble past four players and an Ibrahimovic cross intercepted just as Trezeguet was preparing to tap in.
There was bad news for Juventus when Jonathan Zebina pulled up with a suspected thigh strain and was replaced by Paolo Montero. Cannavaro switched to right-back, leaving Thuram and Montero in central defence for the closing 10 minutes.
Liverpool: Carson; Finnan, Carragher, Hyypia, Traore; Luis Garcia, Gerrard, Biscan, Riise; Baros (Nunez 66), Le Tallec (Smicer 73)
Juventus: Buffon; Zebina (Montero 80), Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Emerson, Blasi (Pessotto 46), Nedved; Del Piero (Trezeguet 60), Ibrahimovic
Ref: De Bleeckere (Bel)
Capello curses sluggish start
Football Italia
Fabio Capello is cursing Juve’s sluggish start to the Champions’ League quarter-final, but believes they’ll eliminate Liverpool.
“We just didn’t play for the first half-hour,” noted the Coach after a 2-1 defeat at Anfield. “We had the chances after that and didn’t have the luck to take them, but for the opening 30 minutes Liverpool were the only team on the field."
"We weren’t aggressive or accustomed to the constant pressure they were putting on us, but once you push Liverpool then their defence does give way.”
Sami Hyypia took advantage of a defensive error from a set-piece – just as Real Madrid had done in the last round – before Luis Garcia turned in a spectacular goal from 30 metres.
“When you strike the ball from distance then you always hope it’ll end up like Luis Garcia’s goal,” smiled Capello. “This was a difficult game against a team that really plays its best on home turf. Our approach was wrong and I take responsibility, but I am satisfied with our performance after the break.”
The half-time substitution, introducing Gianluca Pessotto for Manuele Blasi, proved crucial as Juve were a different team after the break.
“Pessotto is the kind of player who can get the ball moving quickly, but above all covers Gianluca Zambrotta on his runs. I liked the performance in the second half and the team as a whole really got back on track after Liverpool’s second goal.”
Juventus must win at the Delle Alpi next Wednesday evening, but a 1-0 result would be enough to see them through on the away goals rule.
“Our finishing left something to be desired, but I believe that after our first half showing this counts as a positive result,” continued Capello. “It’s not easy to find the right mindset after being away for a while and the break for Easter and then the Serie A postponement didn’t help us.”
The Bianconeri could easily have drawn 2-2 at Anfield, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic hit the upright and Alessandro Del Piero had a perfectly good goal disallowed for offside. Pavel Nedved was also making his comeback after suffering head trauma against Madrid in late February.
“Every time Zlatan gets the ball he is crowded out by three players. He’s not very lucky with his finishing at the moment, but he is a very important player for Juventus. Nedved is a special player and I was fully satisfied with his performance. I’d say that for the final hour the whole team did well.”
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has not hidden his admiration for Capello and gave his view on beating the tactician.
“We were aggressive and needed that for a game like this against Juve,” said the Spaniard. “I am happy with the first half, but the Bianconeri were better after the break and maintained possession well. We have a week to get some injured players back, such as Jerzy Dudek, but it’ll be difficult for Xabi Alonso to return in time.”
Juve star Gianluca Zambrotta gave an insight into the locker room atmosphere at half-time. “Capello was extremely angry during the break, but he didn’t tell us anything we didn’t already know about our own performance. It was clear for all to see that we had to wake up.”
“I think we stepped onto the field without the right determination and were always second to the ball,” said the fullback. “We realised we couldn’t carry on like that and came on for the second half with a different psychological approach.”
“We proved in the second half that if we put Liverpool under pressure then they will struggle. Considering how it was going, we can be happy with the 2-1 result and clearly there are regrets as we should’ve done so much better.”
This was the first meeting of the two clubs since the Heysel disaster and several former players – including Michel Platini and Ian Rush – walked out before kick-off in a show of friendship. “I wanted to commemorate the 20th anniversary of this tragic event with the two sets of fans,” explained ex-Juve star Platini.
“Liverpool were exceptional in the first half, but I think Juventus will qualify as they are the better team and started to prove that after the break. With the disallowed goal and Zlatan Ibrahimovic hitting the woodwork they had some great chances.”
I could quit, warns Nedved
Football Italia
Juventus star Pavel Nedved has threatened to quit at the end of the season if he continues to be plagued by injury. The Czech ace will return to the side against Liverpool tonight in what could be one of his last Champions’ League appearances for the club.
"How am I? I don’t know to be honest," stated the midfielder who has spent the last five weeks on the sidelines. "I haven’t played properly for months. It has been a disaster for me since the European Championships," he added.
"I picked up blows to my knee and my head. If it goes on like this, I’ll retire at the end of the season."
Nedved had previously stated that he would hang up his boots when his contract expires in 2006. But he’s so frustrated with the last 12 months that he seems to be seriously considering his future. "It’s better to quit before you are ruined," he added. "Health comes first in life. After all, football isn’t the only reason for my existence."
Nedved’s fitness problems started last summer when he picked up a serious knee injury in the Euro 2004 semi-final against Greece. He then sustained another blow to the same knee in January during a League victory against Brescia.
Nedved returned to the side for the Champions’ League trip to Real Madrid, but he didn’t last the 90 minutes as he was knocked unconscious following an accidental clash of heads. The player was hospitalised for a few days but he has now been given the green light to return to the Bianconeri midfield.
Pessotto: Honour is key
SkySports
Juventus' veteran defender Gianluca Pessotto has told skysports.com that he is hopeful the players of both the Turin club and Liverpool will show respect to the memory of those killed at Heysel. A major tribute is planned for the UEFA Champions League clash between the two sides, who meet for the first time since the tragedy in 1985.
Pessotto believes that the players have a duty to show their respect on the pitch - and also backed the decision for the game to go ahead after the death of Pope John Paul II this week. "I remember watching the Heysel match," said Pessotto. "It was quite an absurd situation.
"It was very hard to comprehend what was going on - as the two sides kicked off despite the tragedy. The best way to remember the dead would be to show them respect through fair behaviour on and off the pitch.
"I hope the passing of the Holy Father will be a further reason to behave properly. As he really loved sports and was very close to all footballers and fans, the best way to honour his memory is to show we have understood the lesson and make a celebration out of the game."
Papa fears Giannichedda exit
Football Italia
Lazio boss Giuseppe Papadopulo is hoping that the rumours of Giuliano Giannichedda’s move to Juventus are untrue. "He is a player who works extremely hard," stated the Biancocelesti tactician. "Therefore, I hope he remains here with us."
Giannichedda has been heavily linked with a free transfer to the Bianconeri after his contract talks stalled. The 30-year-old is only tied to the capital club until June and no agreement has been reached over a renewal.
The 2000 Scudetto winners want to keep hold of the former Udinese man but their initial offer has not been welcomed by the player. Lazio are ready to hand the midfielder a four-year deal but a contract that is only worth around £360,000-a-season.
Reports suggest that Juve will propose a three-year deal which will net the player over double that amount of money. Giannichedda will further be enticed by the prospect of battling for the Scudetto and the Champions’ League. It is also believed that Inter could join the chase for Giannichedda if he does quit his current club.
Juventus target Mozart ready to leave Reggina
Tribal Football
Reggina midfielder Mozart admits he is ready to move to "a bigger club" at the end of this season. The Brazilian is being courted by Juventus, along with AC Milan and Roma, and declared: "I am happy at Reggio, but it is natural that a player moves forward in order to build his career.
"Playing in a more prestigious team, I would perhaps have the possibility to realize my dream, that is of being called into the national team. I'm under contract with Reggina until 2007, but we will see what happens."
Juve are favourites to land Mozart, where director general Luciano Moggi is good friends with Reggina president Lillo Foti.
English sides target Riquelme
SkySports
Villarreal have conceded they are unable to stump up the cash required to keep Juan Roman Riquelme at El Madrigal. The Argentina international is currently on loan to the Yellow Submarines for the second successive season from Liga giants Barcelona.
The 26-year-old's services are no longer required at Camp Nou and the club are hoping to recoup much of the £7 million they paid to Boca Juniors. Riquelme spent just one season in Barcelona before being farmed out by the Catalan giants after failing to have the desired impact.
Newcastle and Middlesbrough are keen on his services, while Tottenham are believed to have dispatched scouts to watch him during the club's 3-1 win over Athletic Bilbao.
"A number of Premiership teams are interested in Juan Roman," explained a Villarreal spokesman. "He's happy here and we'd like to make him a permanent signing, but Barca are inviting offers from all around Europe and we can't match the cash some English clubs can put up."

Capello expects 'exemplary' Juve
Football Italia
Juventus boss Fabio Capello insists his side will "act in an exemplary manner" as they face Liverpool for the first time since the Heysel disaster. The tactician made the statement as the two sides prepare to meet at Anfield on Tuesday, in the first leg of their Champions’ League quarter-final.
"We will need to act in an exemplary manner," said the Coach after 39 fans lost their lives before the 1985 European Cup Final. "That was a terrible tragedy but we need to be good enough to try to just concentrate on the game, leaving thoughts of Heysel and the Pope’s death to one side.
"We are professionals and we must do our work in the best way possible."
Juventus go into the game as favourites to qualify but the Italian isn’t taking anything for granted.
"They’ll probably play with only one striker but I don’t feel that will be an advantage for us," he added. "How is David Trezeguet? The fact that he has been included in the squad means that he is available to play."
The Frenchman is likely to start on the bench though because of an ankle problem, meaning that Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be partnered by Alessandro Del Piero in attack.
"It is an important game in which winning is all that counts," stated Del Piero on Monday evening. "We are looking to score and take home a victory. Liverpool are a strong side, especially at home, but we are prepared to win."
The captain also commented on the Heysel disaster. "I was watching the game with some friends," he recalled. "When it became clear what was happening, my father sent me outside to play football in the courtyard. Only when I grew up did I understand what happened that night in Brussels."
Meanwhile, UEFA have confirmed that all games this week will be preceded by a minute’s silence in memory of Pope John Paul II.

Buffon eyes Anfield win
Football Italia
Juventus goalkeeper Gigi Buffon is looking for his team to net a healthy advantage in the first leg of their Champions’ League tie at Liverpool. The Bianconeri face the Premiership side at Anfield on Tuesday and the shot-stopper is keen to gain an instant grip of the quarter-final tie.
"It is important that we get a good result away from home so that we can be calm going into the second game," said the Italian international. "They will have a few selection difficulties but the fact that they have reached this far in the competition proves that they have a strong squad."
Juventus will go into the game just hours after their weekend trip to Fiorentina was postponed following the Pope’s death. "That won’t affect us," assured the former Parma man. "An important man has gone but we are professionals and we know what we must do."
Liverpool don’t bring back happy memories for Jonathan Zebina, Emerson and boss Fabio Capello after Roma were defeated in controversial circumstances back in 2002. "It will be a totally different game," stated the French defender. "But that memory will obviously act as an extra stimulus to do well."
Tomorrow’s match is also set to be an emotional occasion, given that the two sides meet competitively for the first time since the 1985 Heysel disaster in which 39 fans died. "We must keep learning from that event to make sure that it never happens again," stated director general Luciano Moggi.
London next for Del Piero?
Football Italia
Alessandro Del Piero is being linked with a move to London if Juventus net Antonio Cassano in the summer. Speculation in the peninsula suggests that the 30-year-old will quit the Turin giants if, as expected, Juve net Roma’s Cassano at the end of the season.
The youngster is seen as an heir to Del Piero in the Italian game and Alex’s mediocre season doesn’t bode well. He’s often been substituted by boss Fabio Capello, who is also a massive fan of Cassano after their time together at Roma, and the January arrival of Adrian Mutu raised further questions about the No 10’s future.
Now a switch to the Premiership is being touted with a number of clubs reportedly interested. Although the likes of Liverpool - who Del Piero will face on Tuesday - and Manchester United would be keen, Del Piero would reportedly only consider a London move.
That leaves the door open for Chelsea, Arsenal and even Tottenham to ponder a summer bid for the Azzurri ace.
However, conflicting reports on Monday suggest that the former Padova youngster will remain for at least one more campaign. Del Piero has started to rediscover some of his best form in recent weeks which has helped Juve maintain their joint leadership in Serie A.
A potential sale would also not be welcomed by the fans who see the captain as an emblem of the club.
Cassano to stay if…
Football Italia
Antonio Cassano is reportedly ready to stay at Roma if the outfit meet his substantial contract demands. The Italian is only tied to the outfit until 2006 and talks regarding a renewal will commence next week.
Cassano’s agent, Giuseppe Bozzo, is expected to meet with the club on Thursday or Friday where he will start negotiations. The 23-year-old is said to be willing to snub a move, to either Juventus or Real Madrid, so long as he is handed a new five-year contract.
However, his wage demands are set to cause conflict with the Giallorossi as he wants £3m-a-season, gradually rising to £4m in the final year of any agreement. The Olimpico boys want to keep hold of the international but those figures are set to be too steep for the outfit who are still looking to cut their debts.
Therefore a summer sale seems more likely, especially as the club are already having to dig deep to keep both Vincenzo Montella and Francesco Totti in Rome. Roma are set to cash in on the former Bari player, expecting to net around £22m for the classy forward.
Lazio offer 'job for life' to Juventus target Giannichedda
Tribal Football
Lazio president Claudio Lotito will make a last ditch offer to midfielder Giuliano Giannichedda to sign a new deal in the coming weeks. Alerted to reports stating Giannichedda has already agreed to a pre-contract with Juventus, Lotito is drawing up a new offer for the midfielder, which includes the option of a job with Lazio for when he decides to retire.
Giannichedda's fiancé let slip last week that she expected to be moving to Turin in the summer, while yesterday another report emerged stating the player had confirmed to a close friend that the Juventus deal was on.
Lotito won't give up, however, with a four-year deal worth £700,000-a-year, plus a job with the technical department after he hangs up his boots to soon be tabled to Giannichedda's representatives.

Trez doubt for Anfield Road
Football Italia
David Trezeguet remains a major doubt to feature against Liverpool on Tuesday, while Pavel Nedved could prompt a change of tactics.
Trezeguet returned from international duty with an ankle injury and was set to miss Saturday’s match with Fiorentina – a tie that was rescheduled along with every other Italian game as a sign of respect for Pope John Paul II.
Latest reports from Turin suggest the Frenchman is far from ready to start at Anfield Road in the Champions’ League quarter-final, although he could feature in the second half.
The Fiorentina game was set to test out Nedved’s fitness levels after sitting on the sidelines since suffering concussion in a clash of heads with Raul Bravo on February 22. Technically, he only played 35 minutes of that game at the Bernabeu, so Nedved’s last real match was against Brescia on January 23.
The 2003 European Player of the Year could nonetheless be able to start the match, prompting a change of tactics. Fabio Capello had found some success with the 4-3-3 system, enabling Juventus to beat Real Madrid 2-0 in the second leg of their Champions’ League clash and notching up a string of Serie A victories.
However, with Marcelo Zalayeta also struggling with a back problem, it looks likely he’ll revert back to a 4-4-2 with Alessandro Del Piero and Zlatan Ibrahimovic upfront. Nedved and Mauro German Camoranesi take the flanks with Manuele Blasi and Emerson in central midfield.
It is rumoured that Nedved would make way for Trezeguet – or Zalayeta – in the second half at Anfield for the trident attack to hit Liverpool in the closing stages. Alessio Tacchinardi is suspended for the first leg.
Meanwhile, UEFA have confirmed that Belgian referee Frank De Bleeckere has been assigned to Juve’s match. Pierluigi Collina will officiate Tuesday’s other quarter-final between Olympique Lyon and PSV Eindhoven.
Juventus squad: 1 Buffon, 4 Montero, 7 Pessotto, 8 Emerson, 9 Ibrahimovic, 10 Del Piero, 11 Nedved, 12 Chimenti, 15 Birindelli, 16 Camoranesi, 17 Trezeguet, 18 Appiah, 19 Zambrotta, 20 Blasi, 21 Thuram, 22 Bonnefoi, 24 Olivera, 25 Zalayeta, 27 Zebina, 28 Cannavaro
Juventus scouted Benfica wing-back Miguel
Tribal Football
Juventus had scouts watch Benfica wing-back Miguel last week in international action for Portugal. Juve were reported to have posted scouts to track Nurnberg midfielder and Slovakia skipper Marek Mintal in action against the Portuguese.
However, its believed Juve's prime target was Portugal international wing-back Miguel, who is rated by director general Luciano Moggi as a potential replacement for veteran Lilian Thuram.
Palermo ready to sell Barzagli to Juventus if Behrami included
Tribal Football
Palermo will consider selling Andrea Barzagli to Juventus if the Turin giants are prepared to offer them Valon Behrami. Juve are lining up a deal for Swiss kid Behrami, who is currently playing on loan at Vincenza from Genoa this season in Serie B.
Palermo sports director Rino Foschi has confirmed the interest of Juve in defender Barzagli, but insists they won't consider selling the Italy international. However, a deal could be on if Juve sign Behrami and loan the youngster to Palermo as part of their offer for Barzagli.
Real Madrid chiefs agree on push for Juventus ace Emerson
Tribal Football
Real Madrid chiefs have agreed to pursue a deal for Juventus midfielder Emerson. The Brazil international was forced to deny quotes attributed to him last week that he wanted a move to Real.
Real chiefs Arrigo Sacchi and Emilio Butragueno have discussed signing Emerson with coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo and all three are agreed that they must try to bring the Brazil international to Spain over the summer.
In Brazil, press reports state Emerson indeed wants to join Real Madrid and that a deal can be struck at the end of this season. Emerson, however, is in a difficult position as Real won't move until he asks away from Juve - a move that will not go down well with local fans as the Brazilian only joined last summer from AS Roma.

Capello counts Juve injuries
Football Italia
Fabio Capello freely admits he is forced to pick a starting eleven for tonight’s trip to Florence and will start with Pavel Nedved. “My line-up pretty much picks itself in this situation,” said the Juventus Coach. “There aren’t many to choose from.”
David Trezeguet, Marcelo Zalayeta and Ciro Ferrara are injured, while Ruben Olivera is suspended for the Stadio Artemio Franchi clash.
“Trezeguet came back from international duty with an ankle problem caused by a terrible challenge that prompted his red card reaction, though the goal should hopefully have boosted his confidence. Zalayeta has back pain, but we hope both will be available for the Liverpool game.”
Pavel Nedved has been out of action since he was knocked unconscious in a clash of heads with Real Madrid’s Raul Bravo, but is finally ready for his comeback. “Nedved worked well in training and in my view those returning from a long-term injury should start the match,” revealed Capello.
The rivalry between Juventus and Fiorentina has not been dimmed by the Viola’s recent financial problems and has an extra spice to it this season. Although Fabrizio Miccoli is out with an Achilles tendon problem, another former Turin star – Enzo Maresca – claimed in the Press this week that he hoped Juventus would end the campaign empty-handed.
“In life you have to make choices and the club opted to cash in on some players in order to bring in others who we needed more,” explained the former Roma boss. “You have to take the balance sheet into account and I think our transfer campaign went very well.”
It’s a dangerous encounter and a slip could allow Milan – who welcome relegation strugglers Brescia – to break away at the top of the table. “It won’t be an easy game, as Fiorentina can beat anyone on their day. But in Serie A the big names mean little, as there is danger around every corner.”
Calcio stops for Pope John Paul
Football Italia
The CONI has announced that all Serie A and B games will be rescheduled as a sign of respect for Pope John Paul II. There had already been rumours that the matches would be halted if His Holiness lost his fight for life over the weekend, but calls to stop now were growing with every hour.
It is believed that the Serie A encounters will be rescheduled for Wednesday April 20, moving the planned Coppa Italia ties forward by one week to accomodate them.
"In the light of the latest medical reports that make clear the imminent death of His Holiness and in respect for the sentiments expressed by the players, Coaches, directors and fans, we have invited the Federations of all Italian sports to immediately suspend all activity planned for this weekend," said CONI (Italian Olympic Committee) President Gianni Petrucci.
Moggi questions timing
Football Italia
Most of those involved in Italian football have come out in favour of suspending all matches as a sign of respect for The Pope, but Juve have some reservations. The decision to reschedule the Serie A and B games was in the air, although it was only taken early this afternoon by the CONI (Italian Olympic Committee).
“When faced with certain situations, football has to take a step back,” said Sampdoria Coach Walter Novellino. “Right now everyone should stop and pray for The Pope, a man who has given so much to the human race and passed on his message of peace.”
Cagliari captain Gianfranco Zola added, “We are all very upset and are waiting for news from the Vatican with our fingers crossed. It is right that sport should stop now because there are things far more important than football.”
Parma boss Pietro Carmignani was also in favour of a suspension as His Holiness continues his fight for life. “It is the correct decision, as the fact the doctors have given no hope of a recovery makes these hours even more painful for everyone.”
However, the timing of the decision has caused some controversy, especially for those teams who had already made the trip to today’s games – Juventus, Inter, Livorno and Brescia.
“The decision to suspend all sporting activity this weekend was a wise one, but it was so clear to everyone that it should’ve already been made yesterday,” noted Juve director general Luciano Moggi (pictured).
Palermo chief Maurizio Zamparini had originally stated that the matches should go on. “I am satisfied that a decision has been made to end the uncertainty that has been hanging over everyone for the last 24 hours. A football match isn’t easy to organise, so a statement had to be made one way or the other.”
Zambrotta: "They are all finals"
Juventus.com
“This is a special match, much felt by both sides and supporters. It will be a struggled, tough match and we must absolutely win. Winning every match is fundamental to us in order to face Milan in the face-to-face match with more points or at least equal.” Zambrotta looks at the Saturday match against Fiorentina, a special challenge for him.
In fact, it’s Dino Zoff on the Viola bench, he who launched Gianluca in the National team: “Zoff caused my debut in the Azzurri outfit – he remembers – He’s been very important in my career. I’m willing to greet him and I’ll thank him. I wish him to do well with Fiorentina; they do not deserve to be in their present position in the table but they had several problems, from injuries to changes of coach. I hope they can catch up.”
The match in Florence takes place a few days before another away match, the one against Liverpool in Champions League: “They’re two important matches within a very short time but it won’t be a problem. It’s not the first time that we have to handle very close events and we won’t find it hard to keep concentration high. Physical-wise we have already proved we can manage it, like in the match against Real, when we could play all the way to the second extra time without slowing down.”
The conversation inevitably shifts to the Scudetto race with Milan: “From now on, until the face-to-face match with them, all the matches will be like finals – Gianluca explains - It’s always hard playing against clubs who are fighting to remain in Serie A, and that’s when you risk losing points. I think that those who win over them will win the Scudetto. Play-offs? Well I hope this won’t be the case, also because I’m getting married on June, 18th!”.
Meghni: I'm happy with Bologna
Tribal Football
Bologna midfielder Mourad Meghni says he is happy to stay with the club. The French youngster has been linked with Real Madrid and Juventus, but says: "The future? I hope to stay at Bologna. I've never done a complete season and playing is the most important thing for a player.
"I feel good here. For the moment I'm a Bologna player and I don't think of moving to other clubs. I must only think to play in a good way in the last matches of the season."

Emerson ‘quotes’ were not Real
Football Italia
Juventus midfielder Emerson has rubbished reports that he is interested in a summer move to Real Madrid. The Brazilian was yesterday quoted as saying that “he would like to play for Real” but he today insists that is not true.
“I never said what has been reported,” said the summer signing from Roma as he committed his future to Juve. “I was asked for my opinion about Real’s interest in me and I simply stated that a move would be impossible. That is because I have just arrived at Juventus and I have signed a four-year contract with them.”
The former Bayer Leverkusen ace has been strongly associated with a Liga switch but a move now looks even more unlikely than it did on Thursday.
“I simply confirmed that I have great respect for a club like Real, as I do for all other big sides,” added the South American. “But I also underlined that I am committed to Juventus for a long time. That is something that I am profoundly proud of.”
The Italian giants are also unlikely to release Emerson given his impact at the Stadio Delle Alpi. He has quickly settled in Turin, thanks also to his understanding with ex-Roma boss Fabio Capello, and has been instrumental in the club’s success so far this term.
Trez issues French apology
Football Italia
David Trezeguet has apologised to his France teammates for his costly sending off in Wednesday's World Cup qualifier against Israel. The Juventus ace had given Les Bleus the lead before seeing red for head-butting Tal Ben Haim, and Israel profited from their numerical advantage to level the scores at 1-1.
"I penalised the whole team when we had the match won," said the 27-year-old. "I'm sincerely sorry for letting down my teammates, who gave everything to hold on. I'll also be phoning the Coach (Raymond Domenech) to apologise."
Trezeguet automatically misses France's next match at home to the Faroe Islands, but is liable to face a longer ban from FIFA that would keep him out of the side's crunch qualifier away to the Republic of Ireland.
"I hope FIFA take into account that I reacted to a bad tackle from behind. The defender just went for me and he should have been sent off too,” he argued. "But it's not like it was my first international. I should be used to that kind of provocation by now. I just didn't think.
"I'm really not that kind of player, I've never been sent off for France before."
It was a night of mixed emotion for the former Monaco frontman, who also became the second-highest scorer in France's history behind Michel Platini. "I'm proud, but most of all I'm sad,” he said. “Not for me but for my colleagues. It's just a shame."
To make matters worse, Ben Haim's tackle has left Trezeguet with an ankle injury that has ruled him out of Juventus' away game to Fiorentina tomorrow. The Bianconeri are also without fellow striker Marcelo Zalayeta but Pavel Nedved will return in a 4-4-2 formation.
Juventus, AC Milan join Liverpool interest for Mintal
Tribal Football
Nurnberg midfielder Marek Mintal was scouted by AC Milan and Juventus last week in international action. The Slovakia international skipper was tracked by Juve and Milan representatives against Portugal and impressed in the World Cup qualifier.
Liverpool are long time admirers of Mintal, who is contracted to Nurnberg until 2008 but could be cashed in to assure the Bundesliga club's financial future. Juve are considering Mintal as a heir to injury-plagued ace Pavel Nedved, while Milan are considering the midfielder as an eventual replacement for veteran Rui Costa.
Barcelona offer Riquelme to Real Betis
Tribal Football
Barcelona midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme has been offered to Real Betis. The Argentina international has been outstanding on-loan at Villarreal this season and is being made available by Barca for a permanent transfer.
While Villarreal and Deportivo La Coruna have expressed interest in signing Riquelme outright, a Barca intermediary approached Betis last week about a deal for the midfielder.
Betis president Manuel Ruiz de Lopera will discuss the prospect of signing Riquelme with coach Lorenz Serra Ferrer over the weekend. With interest growing in Marcos Assuncao, Riquelme could arrive at Betis as a direct replacement for the Brazilian.
Serie A to stop for Pope John Paul?
Football Italia
Pope John Paul II's failing health has prompted many to call for Serie A football to be postponed this weekend, though it seems as if the games will go ahead. The 84-year-old Pontiff is suffering from heart and respiratory problems. Lazio-Livorno is set to be played in Rome on Saturday afternoon and reports suggested it could be rescheduled.
“We knew this course of action was on the cards after his condition worsened, and I’d consider it an important gesture,” said Livorno President Aldo Spinelli. “I spoke to League chief Adriano Galliani this afternoon and he assured me the game would go ahead.”
Bologna tactician Carlo Mazzone also supported a suspension of sporting events in Italy. “We should stop now. It’s the least we can do for a person who has given so much to mankind.”
Milan Coach Carlo Ancelotti added, “I think it right to pause for reflection in this situation. I met The Pope in the 1980’s and he has always been close to the people. You got this wonderful sense of serenity from him and I expect that’s how he’s experiencing these hours.”
Brescia patron Luigi Corioni aimed a sideswipe at the cynical side of the sport. “It would be a wonderful gesture to halt the games, but I don’t know if football is capable of such a thing. It would be the chance to pay tribute to an extraordinary man who changed the world.”
The calendar is already packed due to the new 20-team Serie A format and Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini insisted the show must go on. “With all due respect for Pope John Paul II, I don’t think football should stop. Perhaps we should look at the Lazio-Livorno situation because it is in Rome, but halting everything is another matter entirely.”
The CONI announced that "a moment of prayer and reflection" would take place before each sporting event this weekend.
