Real target Buffon extends

Football Italia

Gigi Buffon has silenced talk of a move to Real Madrid by extending his contract with Juventus until 2010. The goalkeeper has been heavily linked with the Spanish giants recently but a summer move seems to have now been ruled out.

Reports suggest that Real made the Turin giants an offer of £22m last week, a bid which was rejected by the Serie A leaders. And now Juve have shown their commitment to the Azzurri ace by renewing his £3.2m-a-season contract for an extra 12 months.

Today’s news will be a massive relief for fans who were fearing a repeat of the Zinedine Zidane transfer – after he left Juve for Real in a £50m deal in 2001. But the club used that cash to sign Buffon, for £33m, in that same summer after his rise as Italy’s best shot-stopper.

The 27-year-old, who has won two Scudetti and two Italian Super Cups with the Old Lady, could now realistically end his career at the Stadio Delle Alpi.

Real could still look to Italy for a new ‘keeper if they decide to sell Manchester United target Iker Casillas in the summer. Parma’s Sebastien Frey would be an option given that Real’s technical director, Arrigo Sacchi, knows him well after they worked together at the Tardini.

Other possible options include Milan No 2 Christian Abbiati and Chelsea’s Italian custodian Carlo Cudicini.

Emerson opens Real door

Football Italia

Emerson has cast doubt on his Juventus future by admitting his interest in joining Real Madrid. The Spanish media are convinced that the Brazilian is a summer transfer target and the player has seemingly left the door open for a shock switch.

"Like any other footballer, I would like to play for Real Madrid because of what they represent in the world game," he said after scoring in the 1-1 draw with Uruguay last night. But any move would be decided between the two clubs. I have a contract with Juventus and I think an immediate transfer would be very difficult."

Emerson’s remarks will come as a surprise to many given that he rejected a Real approach in the summer. Roma had agreed a fee with the Madrid outfit but the South American insisted that he only wanted Juventus. The Italian giants are also unlikely to release the former Bayer Leverkusen ace due to his impact at the Stadio Delle Alpi.

Emerson has quickly settled in Turin, thanks also to his understanding with ex-Roma boss Fabio Capello, and has been instrumental in the club’s success so far this term.

Juve eye Giannichedda option

Football Italia

Juventus are set to sign Giuliano Giannichedda on a free transfer after his contract talks with Lazio stalled. The 30-year-old is only tied to the capital club until June and no agreement has yet been reached over a renewal.

The Biancocelesti want to keep hold of the former Udinese man but their initial offer has not been welcomed by the player. Lazio are ready to hand the midfielder a four-year deal but a contract that is only worth around £350,000-a-season.

Reports suggest that Juve will propose a three-year deal which will net the player over double that amount of money. Giannichedda will further be enticed by the prospect of battling for the Scudetto and the Champions’ League with the Old Lady.

It’s understood that Giannichedda met with Lazio sporting director Gabriele Martino yesterday to discuss his situation. Martino is believed to have told the ace, who is hoping for an international recall in time for the 2006 World Cup, that he wants a definite answer regarding his future by next week.

Palermo chief: No direct contact with Milan, Juventus for Barzagli

Tribal Football

Palermo director general Rino Foschi says no club has been in contact about defender Andrea Barzagli.

Juventus and AC Milan are believed to have initiated talks with Barzagli's representatives about next season, while Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini has spoken openly about a potential deal with Juve for the Italy international.

But Foschi insisted yesterday: "Nobody has asked me about Barzagli, even if I know that Juventus and Milan are courting him. I do not see us selling him."

Maresca eyes Juve revenge

Football Italia

Fiorentina’s Enzo Maresca is looking to prove a point against former club Juventus on Saturday. The midfielder, who is co-owned by both sides, is angered that he was never given his chance in Turin and is eager for revenge following his summer switch.

"I was happy at Juventus and I think I gave my contribution," said the former Under-21 international. "However, I was saddened by the way they offloaded me. They made me promises that were not kept. I thank the fans and my former teammates but I can’t do the same to those who didn’t have belief in me."

But Maresca, who has also spent loan spells at Piacenza and Bologna while with the Turin giants, is now looking to the future. "I need to forget about the past," he added. "I feel settled in Florence and I want to give my best for the team."

Maresca’s comments will add extra spice to an already fierce rivalry, but the midfielder insists his club just need to focus on the points. "It is a very important game for the city and the fans," he explained. "But it is even more key for our League position."

Fiorentina and Juventus, despite last summer’s transfers which also saw Giorgio Chiellini and Fabrizio Miccoli move south, share one of calcio’s great rivalries.

Atletico Madrid eye Chelsea target Evra

Tribal Football

Ambitious Atletico Madrid are rivalling Chelsea and AC Milan for AS Monaco left-back Patrice Evra. Its emerged Evra's contract has a £3.5 million buyout clause, though such has been the interest in the French international that his final transfer fee is likely to be far greater.

Chelsea are eyeing Evra as an alternative to Arsenal left-back Ashley Cole, while Milan have been following his progress for over 18 months. Atletico sports chief Toni Munoz has discussed Evra with his board and made personal checks on him in Champions League action this season.

Fiorentina - Juventus

Football Italia

Juventus’ next step in the neck and neck race for the Scudetto comes at the home of one of their bitter rivals. Recent history suggests it will be a win for the Bianconeri as they have not been beaten at the home of the Viola since 1998. Having watched their eight point lead over Milan evaporate, Juve will be desperate not to allow their hated foes the opportunity to cause them to slip behind in the race for Serie A.

Fiorentina stand just two points clear of the relegation zone and Dino Zoff, a Juventus legend, will be equally keen to see his side take the points to ease fears of a quick return to Serie B. They will have to manage without striker Valeri Bojinov, who is still sidelined with a thigh strain, and former Juve striker Fabrizio Miccoli who has an Achilles injury. Nigerian midfielder Christian Obodo and defender William Viali are both suspended.

Juventus are still without Uruguayan midfielder Ruben Olivera who is suspended after his red card in the win over Chievo and striker Oliver Kapo is doubtful with a muscular injury. Olivera scored the goal that sealed Juve’s 1-0 win at the Delle Alpi in November.

Juventus have won five of their last six matches since the defeat to Palermo, while Fiorentina have scored twice in their last four outings. Juve’s defence has been their strength in the last month as they have conceded just once in their last five games.

This match will also have an extra twist given that Enzo Maresca and Giorgio Chiellini will want to prove their worth against the Turin giants – given that they were allowed to join the Tuscan club on loan in the summer along with Miccoli.

Fiorentina (probable): Cejas; Maggio, Ujfalusi, Dainelli, Chiellini; Ariatti, Donadel, Maresca, Jorgensen; Riganò, Pazzini

Juventus (probable): Buffon; Zebina, Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Emerson, Tacchinardi; Zalayeta, Ibrahimovic, Del Piero

Zambro ‘happy’ at Juventus

Football Italia

Juventus ace Gianluca Zambrotta maintains that he has no desire to join Chelsea or Real Madrid. The left-back has been hotly linked with both clubs recently but he insists that he’s committed to the Bianconeri.

"I have a contract at Juventus until June 2008," said the former Bari midfielder, who is now considered as one of Europe’s best full-backs. It is pleasing to know that great clubs are keen but I am very happy at Juve. I hope to stay in Italy for as long as possible."

Chelsea were allegedly lining up a summer bid as the Italian is seen an alternative for Arsenal’s English international Ashley Cole.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid are today being associated with Zambrotta’s Turin teammate Emerson. Juventus are reportedly ready to sell the 29-year-old despite his massive impact since his summer arrival from Roma. Real are also said to be interested in making a bid for Milan playmaker Andrea Pirlo or Daniele De Rossi of Roma.

Further whispers in Spain on Wednesday suggest that Real are ready to sell Ronaldo at the end of term. The Brazilian, who has netted just once in his last 12 games, is apparently available for £17m.

Chelsea could be keen, even if Inter are also being linked after Ron’s recent comments that he would be open to a Nerazzurri return. The South American left the San Siro outfit in the summer of 2002 due to his uneasy relationship with then boss Hector Cuper.

Juventus chiefs discuss Roma's Mancini

Tribal Football

Juventus chiefs are considering a move for AS Roma midfielder Mancini. The Brazilian is being discussed by Juve powerbrokers Luciano Moggi and Roberto Giraudo for the summer market.

Barcelona expressed interest in Mancini during January's transfer window, prompting his agent to urge Roma to tie the youngster down to a new, long-term contract.

Former Roma sports chief Franco Baldini unearthed Mancini two years ago in Brazil, but the capital club's financial worries risk seeing them lose the wing-back at the end of this season.

Moggi: Juventus and Fiorentina can help each other

Tribal Football

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi admits they have an "excellent" relationship with Serie A rivals Fiorentina. He said: "We have given La Viola important players like Miccoli, Maresca and Chiellini. The relationship with the president, Della Valle, is excellent.

"Indeed there is the scope to make things even better. We are convinced, yes, that Fiorentina and Juventus can work together to strengthen eachother. One wants to continue to move up the table, while another wants to challenge for the Scudetto."

Roma: Monaco players convinced Nonda is joining Juventus

Tribal Football

AS Monaco goalkeeper Flavio Roma has told Juventus fans they will be getting a great player next season in striker Shabani Nonda. Monaco striker Nonda is expected to join Juve on a Bosman at the end of this season and Italy international Roma said: "In Monaco, he plays little and his contract is ending.

"On his future move to Juve, he has not said anything, but the impression his teammates have is that the news about Turin is true. Nonda is a big forward and a great person."

Cassetti "proud" of Juventus, AC Milan interest

Tribal Football

New Italy cap Marco Cassetti admits he is "proud" that Juventus and AC Milan are interested in him. The 27 year-old Lecce winger is being chased by both Serie A giants, along with Valencia, and declared: "I feel my time has arrived just at the right moment.

"If Juve and Milan want me, then that makes me proud. They are clubs that represent the history of Italian football."

Juve are now favourites to land Cassetti after director general Luciano Moggi held talks this week with Lecce. Lecce want £3 million for the winger and Moggi is ready to offer defenders Nicola Legrottaglie and Igor Tudor in part-exchange.

Italy 0 - 0 Iceland

Football Italia

Six players made their Azzurri debuts and only a goalline clearance kept them out in an experimental friendly draw with Iceland. Marcello Lippi started his international career with a 2-0 defeat in Iceland back in August 2004 and had the opportunity for revenge.

It was above all an important chance to test out new faces for the World Cup squad, as Lecce fullback Marco Cassetti, Monaco goalkeeper Flavio Roma and Udinese stars Morgan De Sanctis, Vincenzo Iaquinta, David Di Michele and Giampiero Pinzi earned their first Azzurri caps.

Of the debutants, only goalkeeper Roma was in the starting eleven, as Luca Toni joined Cagliari duo Mauro Esposito and Antonio Langella upfront in a 4-3-3 system. Iceland made four changes to the side that beat Italy last summer, including the absence of Chelsea man Eidur Gudjohnsen.

Daniele De Rossi had the first shot on goal after three minutes, but his effort from distance failed to trouble goalkeeper Arason. Roma had rather more to do soon after, as Andrea Barzagli's error let H Sigurdsson in and the shot-stopper rushed off his line to narrow down the angle.

Palermo hitman Toni had an excellent scoring opportunity when his angled drive from the edge of the box was fingertipped round the post with Arason at full stretch.

Fabio Grosso's free kick was charged down after De Rossi had been brought down in a cynical challenge. Italy were dominating and a Marco Materazzi set-piece was deflected wide of the target.

The Azzurri thought they had broken the deadlock when Toni nodded in Langella's cross, but the referee disallowed it for a debatable push, as the two players seemed to be holding each other by the shirt.

A couple of minutes later, Italy saw yet another goal disallowed. An Esposito free kick came out to De Rossi and his shot fizzed through a sea of legs, but three teammates were in an offside position and Barzagli was certainly interfering with play.

In the final minute of the first half, Langella held up the ball for Toni and the hitman ballooned his finish over the bar. De Sanctis, Cassetti, Iaquinta and Di Michele all made their debuts in the second half.

Lecce fullback Cassetti was about to make a spectacular impact on the Azzurri squad when he rose to nod a corner kick past the stranded 'keeper on the hour mark, but Kristian Sigurdsson was standing at the upright for a decisive goalline clearance.

Sampdoria man Aimo Diana replaced Juventus midfielder Manuele Blasi. Esposito was one of the most impressive players on the night and drilled a good chance over the bar from Di Michele's pass, although he had already been halted for a correct offside decision.

Cagliari winger Esposito continued to trouble the Scandinavian defence and he was hacked down by Marteinsson, while Arason got down well to block a De Rossi free kick. Esposito combined beautifully with Di Michele in the area and Iaquinta just failed to get on the end of the cutback from six yards.

The Azzurri couldn't seem to find a way to make their dominance count and bodies were flung at De Rossi and Diana in quick succession to charge down their shots.

Udinese midfielder Giampiero Pinzi became the final debutant of the evening when he stepped in for Simone Barone for the final stages. He is not entirely new to international level, as he had a starring role for the Under-21 side.

Iceland ended the game in ten men, as substitute Kari Arnason went in with his studs on Fabio Grosso's shin, prompting a straight red card just three minutes after stepping on to the pitch.

There was a curious moment when goalkeeper Arason took a step back to get Cassetti's looping cross-shot under control and only just kept the ball on the right side of the line.

There was some good news for Lippi this evening, as Moldova-Norway and Slovenia-Belarus ended in draws, so Italy remain top of World Cup qualifying Group 5 with a four-point lead.

Italy: Roma (De Sanctis 46); Zaccardo, Barzagli, Materazzi (Cassetti 46), Grosso; Barone (Pinzi 74), Blasi (Diana 61), De Rossi; Esposito, Toni (Iaquinta 46), Langella (Di Michele 46)

Iceland: Arason; K Sigurdsson, Bjarnason, Hreidarsson; Gudjonsson (Arnason 78), Marteinsson (Gislason 70), Gunnarsson, Einarsson (Torvaldsson 92), I Sigurdsson; Steinsson (Hallfredsson 89), H Sigurdsson (Skulasson 86)

Lippi pleased with fresh blood

Football Italia

Marcello Lippi claimed the 0-0 friendly draw with Iceland was a useful experience, while the players discuss their feelings about the game. “I am happy with how these players are working and the experience they are picking up, as that is what friendlies are for,” said the Coach after blooding six new internationals.

Luca Toni and Daniele De Rossi saw their goals disallowed, while only a goalline clearance kept out new boy Marco Cassetti’s header.

“We had scored goals to be fair and I have real doubts about the first one to be disallowed. Apart from that, the team created chances and we paid the price for the tension of a debut, but if you don’t get some experience in these ties then you never will.”

Lippi had started his Azzurri career with a 2-0 friendly defeat in Iceland and the Scandinavians proved to be his danger team again.

“It’s a shame we didn’t get a win, but I had no desire for revenge,” assured the Coach. “I was disappointed with their performance, as Iceland came here to kick people and that red card offence on Fabio Grosso was dreadful.”

There was at least one reason for Lippi to smile, as Moldova-Norway and Slovenia-Belarus ended in draws, so Italy remain top of World Cup qualifying Group 5. “This is good news, as we have a four point lead over the second placed team.”

Palermo hitman Toni thought he had opened the scoring when his header beat the goalkeeper, only to see the goal disallowed for an alleged push.

“I think it was a valid goal,” said the former Brescia man. “My marker was next to me and I got my head to the ball, but they didn’t complain at the time and I doubt they expected to hear the referee whistle either.”

Toni also took the opportunity to criticise the Scandinavian approach to this friendly game, as Fabio Grosso was stretchered off in the final minutes after a red card offence from Arnason.

“Iceland came here to defend and did that well, but they were very aggressive and a little too nasty for the occasion. It was difficult to get crosses in, as they were defending in 10 men and tried to pack the midfield without a real centre-forward figure.”

Marco Materazzi looked ahead to the next international fixture, a crucial World Cup qualifier in Norway in June. “It’s a good lead, but we have to try and win in Norway to put our qualification beyond doubt,” said the Inter defender.

Totti set for Roma talks

Football Italia

Roma will meet with Francesco Totti next week in a bid to extend his contract which currently expires in 2006. The capital club must tie the captain down to a new deal before this summer or run the risk of losing him for nothing next year.

Totti has said that he is ready to stay at Roma but he has openly admitted that he would like to be part of a competitive Giallorossi outfit.

Although talks are set to be complex, it is widely expected that Totti will put pen to paper and stay in Rome for at last one more season. The Italian international, a rumoured transfer target for Real Madrid and Inter, will then assess his future again at the end of the 2005-06 campaign.

These are busy times for the Stadio Olimpico club as they are also presently in contract talks with Traianos Dellas and Vincenzo Montella. Both should remain, as will Italian defender Matteo Ferrari despite reported interest from a number of English clubs.

Ferrari has struggled to settle since his Parma move in the summer but is now expected to keep his place in the squad. His agent, Giovanni Curci, met with club officials last night where he was told that Ferrari’s future was safe.

However, one man who looks increasingly likely to leave Roma is young sensation Antonio Cassano. His contract expires in 2006 and the outfit are expected to sell him to Juventus at the end of term.

Real Madrid, Barcelona challenge Chelsea for Kompany

Tribal Football

Real Madrid and Barcelona will challenge Chelsea for Anderlecht defender Vincent Kompany at the end of the season. The Belgium international's agent has already been contacted by both Spanish clubs, with the 18 year-old now expected to be sold by Anderlecht when the summer market opens.

Anderlecht had to reject an £8 million bid from Inter Milan in January for Kompany as he does not want to play in Italy. Chelsea remain favourites to land the youngster, with the Belgian club confirming talks had been held with London giants last month.

Juve welcome back Nedved

Football Italia

Juventus have been boosted with the news that Pavel Nedved will return from injury against Fiorentina on Saturday. The Czech ace has been sidelined for a month with a head injury but should be available for the Artemio Franchi showdown.

Nedved has had an injury plagued year so far, having played just a little over 100 minutes of football in 2005. He was firstly benched with a knee problem before being knocked unconscious in the Champions’ League first leg defeat at Real Madrid.

However, Nedved is now ready to return to the side in a bid to prove his fitness for the European Cup quarter-final against Liverpool. Boss Fabio Capello is expected to give him a starting shirt at the weekend as the side look set to revert from a 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2 system.

The Bianconeri could return to their attacking formation, which has served them well recently, later in the game seeing as the midfielder is not expected to last the 90 minutes.

Blasi eyes Juventus double

Football Italia

Juventus midfielder Manuele Blasi insists his side can claim the Scudetto and Champions’ League double. The Bianconeri are still in the race to claim the two titles and the Italian is eager to win both competitions.

"I can’t choose between them, I simply want both and we’ll see what happens," said the former Perugia and Parma man. "All that I know for sure is that my teammates and myself will fight until the very end."

However, most neutrals seem to think that Milan are more likely to complete the double than the Bianconeri. "It is true that a lot of people believe that the Rossoneri are a better side than us but we are Juventus and Milan mustn’t forget that fact," added the international.

The League campaign kicks off again at the weekend when Juve travel to face great rivals Fiorentina.

"We know it will be tough," noted the Rome-born ace. "The atmosphere will be electric due to the rivalry between the fans. And although Fiorentina are struggling this season, we are well aware of their worth as a team.

"Nevertheless, we know that we can’t afford anything less than a victory on Saturday evening."

Juventus ponder move for PSV skipper Van Bommel

Tribal Football

Juventus are aiming to trump Barcelona for PSV Eindhoven captain Mark van Bommel. The Holland international is off contract in the summer and has been in talks with Barca about a Bosman deal at the end of this season.

Van Bommel insists nothing has been agreed with the Spanish Liga club, while those close to his camp say talks have stalled over concerns of regular first team football. Juve director general Luciano Moggi is ready to step in as he seeks a midfield partner for Emerson.

Moggi is yet to make a concrete proposal to Van Bommel's representatives, but has made contact with them through intermediaries to register Juve's interest.

Juventus to offer players for Lecce youngster Cassetti

Tribal Football

Juventus have joined the race for Lecce winger Marco Cassetti. The youngster has an offer on the table from Valencia and also is being courted by Inter and AC Milan. Juve director general Luciano Moggi has taken advantage of international week to make his move for Cassetti.

Moggi has spoken with Lecce officials about a swap deal involving defensive pair Igor Tudor and Nicola Legrottaglie, but was informed that Cassetti's future won't be decided until June.

Fiorentina's Chiellini: Up to Juventus to find agreement

Tribal Football

Fiorentina fullback Giorgio Chiellini has refused to be drawn on the prospect of returning to parent club Juventus next season. Chiellini was outstanding for Italy on Saturday against Scotland and admits he wouldn't be part of the Azzurri set-up if he'd stayed in Turin this season.

"It is not the moment to speak about my future and anyway, it depends on the two clubs to find an agreement," said Chiellini. "I went to Fiorentina to improve my game and I am doing that. That's all I am concentrating on. I am doing well and have already been called into the national team.

"The future will take care of itself."

Giannichedda's fiancé lets slip Juventus deal

Tribal Football

Lazio winger Giuliano Giannichedda is on his way to Juventus - according to fiancé, Federica Ridolfi. Close friends of Ridolfi confirmed to Tuttosport yesterday that she had admitted "we're moving to Turin next season".

Giannichedda is off contract at the end of this season and his representatives are believed to have already held talks with Juve director general Luciano Moggi about a Bosman deal in the summer.

Lippi relishes Azzurri enthusiasm

Football Italia

Marcello Lippi believes that the passion of new faces in the Azzurri set-up ensures he has a large rota of players for the World Cup squad.

“I feel very happy and enthusiastic about this side,” commented the Coach ahead of a friendly test with Iceland. “It’s as if I were teaching an entire country of football players, so I understand those who say that being called to the Italy squad is like going to Disneyworld.”

Lecce fullback Marco Cassetti made the comparison after receiving his debut call this week, but he isn’t the only one as a host of unfamiliar faces will have the opportunity to impress Lippi in this experimental side on Wednesday evening.

The dominant club in this squad is Palermo with five elements – Cristian Zaccardo, Andrea Barzagli, Fabio Grosso, Simone Barone and Luca Toni.

“I might become an honorary citizen of Palermo at this rate,” smiled the Viareggio-born tactician. “The simple truth is that the Rosanero have a large group of talented Italian players who are regular starters and I have to take that into account. Seeing as they aren’t in Europe, taking part in these friendly games will give them a bit more international experience.”

Lippi also used this praise to criticise the stance of the big clubs when it came to the Nazionale, as in the 2-0 World Cup qualifier against Scotland on Saturday the major names seemed sluggish.

“The new players bring the right motivation to this friendly tie, whereas the first choice stars would’ve come here with their minds on the Champions’ League and Serie A games. I am lucky to have teams like Palermo, as the giants of the sport still pack their squads with foreigners.”

It is because of this that the Coach finds he must re-organise his team with players who are not accustomed to sharing the pitch.

“In the old days you could just transplant the Juventus or Milan midfield to international level, but with the imports now that just isn’t possible. So you have to build a mosaic from various different sides and that is a complicated process, but in the end I believe that attractive play comes from three or four elements.”

Lippi’s Azzurri career got off to a bad start with a 2-0 defeat in Iceland back on August 18, but he has had time to work on the side in the intervening months.

“I am most satisfied with the boost in enthusiasm in and around the Italy squad. The results have also come in as a consequence of that. As for me, I don’t miss being a club Coach as I have watched plenty of football to keep up to date with developments.”

In training today the Azzurri played a mini-match of 10 against 10. On the one side were Roma, Zaccardo, Barzagli, Grosso, Barone, Blasi, De Rossi, Esposito, Toni and Langella. On the other played De Sanctis, Cassetti, Bonera, Materazzi, Chiellini, Diana, Pinzi, goalkeeping Coach Bordon, Iaquinta and Di Michele.

Barcelona ready £35M bid for Arsenal ace Henry

Tribal Football

Barcelona are ready to splash a mega £35 million on signing Arsenal strike ace Thierry Henry. The Sun says the Spanish giants want Henry to form an irresistible attacking trio alongside Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto'o. Barca could be wasting their time - Henry has always insisted he is happy at Highbury.

But the Spaniards hope to take advantage after a season of Premiership and European disappointment for Arsenal.

Real Madrid in advanced talks for Roma's De Rossi

Tribal Football

Real Madrid have been in talks with AS Roma for some weeks over a deal for midfielder Daniele De Rossi. The Italy international is a favourite of Real general manager Arrigo Sacchi, who has been negotiating with Roma since the beginning of March for the youngster.

Cash-strapped Roma have told Real Madrid that De Rossi won't leave for less than £15 million. However, those close to negotiations say Roma would be happy with a deal for £12 million.

While regarded as one of Italy's bright new hopes, Roma are prepared to cash in with Simone Perrotta and Olivier Dacourt ready to fill De Rossi's place and the cash raised a welcome relief to the under pressure Sensi family.

AC Milan ready to meet £5M Newcastle price for Viana

Tribal Football

AC Milan are ready to meet Newcastle United's £5 million asking price for midfielder Hugo Viana. The Portuguese midfielder - on loan at Sporting Lisbon until the end of the season - feared he would have to return to St James' Park this summer.

Viana, 21, is eager to stay at Sporting but the club are not prepared to offer more than £2.5m Porto and Benfica were also put off by the Toon's valuation but Milan have decided to step in. The Italian club's managing director, Ariedo Braida, has ordered his scouts to put together a dossier on Viana, who would be willing to play in Italy.

Juventus land Diogo - reports

Football Italia

Whispers in South America suggest that Juventus have agreed to sign Carlos Andre Diogo Ensenat in the summer. The 21-year-old, more commonly known as Diogo, has caught the eye of the Turin giants after excelling for River Plate.

The Argentine side have offered the player, who can appear at right-back and in midfield, a new deal but he’s rejected it. Now a summer move beckons and his agent, Paco Casal, has reportedly agreed a deal with an Italian club.

That outfit is believed to be Juventus, who already have three other Uruguayans in the shape of Paolo Montero, Ruben Olivera and Marcelo Zalayeta. However, Diogo may not play for the Old Lady in the new season given that he is likely to be sent on loan to a smaller club.

The Bianconeri may offer him to Palermo as part of a deal to sign either Andrea Barzagli or Cristian Zaccardo. He could also be offered to Livorno after the Tuscan side 'helped’ Juve sign Adrian Mutu in January.

Trez laments poor season

Football Italia

Juventus hitman David Trezeguet admits he is experiencing "a black season" after squandering a host of chances for France against Switzerland. The 27-year-old has missed much of the season through injury and, though he scored on his international return against Sweden last month, was far from his clinical best at the Stade de France on Saturday.

"Personally, I am having a black season," said Trezeguet, speaking from the French training base at Clairefontaine after the 0-0 draw. "But I still want to be here and I still want to play."

Trezeguet is set to spearhead the French attack again for Wednesday’s crucial Group 4 clash with Israel in Tel-Aviv, but admitted he would understand if he was dropped. "If I had to give up my position, that wouldn’t cause any problems for me," he said. "I am available and more than anything I want the team to win."

France’s World Cup hopes are now hanging by a thread, and the former Monaco striker admitted that defeat on Wednesday could spell the end.

"If any of the top sides lose a match now, it’s over for them," Trezeguet said. "We know we are in difficulty but we also know that we have quality and that is the most important thing. All of our players play in top Leagues and have fantastic quality. We’re in a delicate situation but we’ll get ourselves out of it," he vowed.

Lippi rewards provincial soccer

Football Italia

Marcello Lippi has defended his decision to name an experimental squad for Wednesday’s friendly with Iceland.

"My selections for this game with Iceland, which I do not consider as a friendly, have been made as a reward to the provincial sides in Italy," he explained. "Those sides tend to field a lot of Italian players which makes my job as the national team boss much easier.

"There are a lot of valid Italian players at clubs like Palermo, Udinese, Cagliari, Sampdoria and Messina. Therefore I think it is only right that I test these players out so that they can get used to the feeling of playing for their country.

"I’m trying to build a squad and it is necessary for me to do what I am doing. I’m sure there will be plenty of players looking to impress me."

The Udinese pair of Vincenzo Iaquinta and Gianpiero Pinzi have been handed their first call-ups. "I must thank Udinese boss Luciano Spalletti for this call," said Iaquinta after a solid scoring season to date. Pinzi added: "Spalletti is a Coach who improves a player day after day. It is a great sensation to be here."

Lecce’s Marco Cassetti is also ecstatic with his international recognition. "I feel like a child at Euro Disney," he stated. "I thank Lippi. Although I don’t know whether I will play, it is already an honour to be the first Lecce player to be called up by the Azzurri."

Maresca tells Juventus: I want Fiorentina stay

Tribal Football

Fiorentina midfielder Enzo Maresca has confirmed he wants to remain in Florence. Maresca's registration is co-owned by Fiorentina and Juventus and the Italy international said: "I want to remain with Fiorentina.

"I have bought a villa close to Florence and hope to move all my family here. The final decision is obviously up to the two clubs, but I have already made my choice."

Roma chief to hold Cassano contract talks this week

Tribal Football

AS Roma chief Rosella Sensi will hold talks with the representatives of striker Antonio Cassano this week. After the Easter break in Italy, Roma will now hold serious negotiations with Cassano's agents about his future and whether he is prepared to lower his demands over a new deal.

Cassano's current contract expires in 2006 and he wants around £3.5 million-a-year to commit to a new deal. That figure is far too high for cash-strapped Roma to contemplate and Sensi is hoping to talk down the striker's demands in the coming days.

Buffon praises Scottish supporters

Football Italia

Gianluigi Buffon claims Italian fans can learn from the Scots, while his teammates insisted their performance on the field was impressive.

“I didn’t have too much to do, but I made sure I was ready when Scotland did create chances,” explained the goalkeeper after the 2-0 win at the San Siro. “There was a slight injury worry when a stud caught me on the knee, but thankfully it was nothing serious.”

Almost half the 40,000 fans attending Saturday’s World Cup qualifier had come from Scotland to see the game and it left Buffon amazed.

“The Scottish fans were wonderful and never stopped singing. To see so many people travel to follow a team that is having problems really proves their patriotism. There were supporters there that were rivals at club level, but came together and forgot all that for their country. It’s something we could really learn from.”

The defence was untroubled in the first half, but Buffon was forced into a couple of tricky saves as the Azzurri were perhaps a little complacent after the break.

“We played well in defence, although there was a bit of a struggle at the start of the second half, but that’s only normal over the 90 minutes,” insisted captain Fabio Cannavaro. “The fans who came to the San Siro saw the international players pass the ball around well and give their heart and soul to get a result.”

Alberto Gilardino had a few touches, but overall failed to make much of an impact spearheading the trident attack with Antonio Cassano and Francesco Totti. “We saw a good Italy performance in the first half, but after the break Scotland came out and tried to attack,” said the Parma man.

Eyebrows were raised when he remained on the pitch until the final whistle, while Cassano and Totti were both substituted.

“We all combined well and tried to find each other in space, so I think the trident attack was a success. I frankly assumed I’d be the one to make way for Luca Toni, so it was a surprise to see Cassano come off instead.”

Juventus No1 Buffon assures Casillas: No Real Madrid talks

Tribal Football

Juventus goalkeeper Gigi Buffon has assured Iker Casillas that he isn't moving to Real Madrid next season. Real No1 Casillas admitted last week that he wanted to know his club's intentions regarding the possible signing of Buffon before committing to a new deal.

But Buffon said: "The truth is that I have a contract with Juve until 2008 and am very happy in Italy. To Casillas I would want to only say that nobody has called me or has approached me. Moreover, it seems to me that that a new goalkeeper is the least of Real's problems."

Oil cash funds Cassano move?

Football Italia

Juve have hinted that they could use the money from a new sponsorship deal to fund their summer bid for Antonio Cassano.

The club coffers were given a massive boost this week when it was announced that Libyan company Tamoil has signed on to pay £76m over the next five years to sponsor their shirts in all competitions. There is also an option to extend for a further five seasons at a cost of £90m.

Last summer saw a more cautious transfer approach from the Turin giants due to financial worries, so this sudden influx of fresh money will prompt them to bring in the top stars. “We won’t go mad,” insisted director general Luciano Moggi. “Juventus will only bring in useful players to improve the squad.”

One such player is Antonio Cassano, who has been linked to the club ever since Fabio Capello took charge in May 2004. Cassano has also pushed these rumours along by repeatedly confessing his admiration for the Coach and that he “misses him every day a little bit more.”

The uncertainty at Roma, who are on their fourth tactician of the campaign, and the fact he has yet to start serious renegotiations for a contract that expires in 2006 makes this summer a crucial stage in the young starlet’s career.

Real Madrid are also interested in the Italian international, but there can be no doubting his favoured destination should be finally break it off with the side that signed him for £20m in 2001.

"He is a player who has grown up a lot in recent times," said Juve goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon this week. "He’s a lot more disciplined than he was at Euro 2004. He would be perfect for Juventus and could win the Golden Ball with our help.”

Agent reveals Juventus contact for River Plate's Diogo

Tribal Football

River Plate wing-back Diogo is being chased by Juventus. The 21 year-old rejected a new contract extension offer from River last week and is keen to move to Europe.

Diogo's agent, Paco Casal, has a good relationship with Juve and revealed he had been speaking to the Italian giants about the Uruguayan youngster. Casal also handles the affairs of Juve players Ruben Oliveira, Marcelo Zalayeta and Paolo Montero.

Casal told Buones Aries journalists that Juve intend to sign Diogo and loan him to a "friendly" Serie A rival, with Palermo nominated as a likely destination.

Fiorentina can beat Milan, Juventus for Bonera

Tribal Football

Parma are expected to cash in on fullback Daniele Bonera at the end of this season. The Italy international is being courted by AC Milan and Juventus, with both giants keen to add Bonera's youth to their aging defence.

Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti has likened Bonera to veteran Billy Costacurta, while Juve trainer Fabio Capello knows he must find a successor to Lilian Thuram. However, Juve and Milan could be trumped by Fiorentina, which have also approached Parma this month for more information on Bonera.

The deciding factor could be Fiorentina's talks with Cesare Prandelli about taking on the coaching reigns from Dino Zoff next season. Its understood Bonera would jump at the chance of joining La Viola if it meant working with ex-Parma coach Prandelli again.

Inter to offer Davids for Vieira

Football Italia

Ex-Milan flop Patrick Vieira could have a second stab at San Siro success if Inter offer three internationals in part-exchange for the Arsenal star.

The Frenchman is reportedly looking for new challenges after the Gunners again failed to reach the Champions’ League quarter-finals and he has already attracted an approach from Real Madrid. The £16m price-tag is very steep for a player who will turn 29 years of age at the end of this season, but Inter have a plan to considerably reduce that sum.

It is well known that Arsene Wenger has been eyeing a new goalkeeper and Francesco Toldo is among the candidates to take over from Jens Lehmann. The other major sweetener comes in the form of Edgar Davids. The Dutch midfielder would be an ideal replacement for Vieira and was in talks with Arsenal before choosing the Nerazzurri in the summer.

It proved to be a bad move for the former Juventus and Barcelona star, as he has barely featured under Coach Roberto Mancini’s reign and more often than not is left in the stands as a tactical choice. Turkish creative midfielder Emre Belozoglu is also set to leave Inter after publicly insulting the club this week.

So with these three internationals as part of the deal, and a three-year contract worth £3m a season lined up, Vieira’s return to Serie A could be more than mere transfer gossip.

Andrea Pirlo takes the freekick Andrea Pirlo celebrates his goals

Marcello Lippi fielded the trident attack, but it took a brace of Andrea Pirlo free kicks to get the better of a plucky Scottish side.

Antonio Cassano had never previously played under Coach Marcello Lippi due to injury and disciplinary problems, but he was given a starring role in the trident attack with Roma teammate Francesco Totti and Parma's Alberto Gilardino.

The Azzurri had to do without the injured Vincenzo Montella and Alessandro Nesta, while Gianluca Zambrotta was suspended, so Fiorentina's Giorgio Chiellini and Inter man Marco Materazzi stepped into the squad for this World Cup qualifier. It was an important game for Scotland, as manager Walter Smith was making his official debut.

The first real chance came after nine minutes, as Totti's low free kick was charged down by the defensive wall, then Chiellini saw his effort deflected just past the near post. Another Totti set-piece from much further out - a good 35 metres - made it through the sea of legs and Rab Douglas did well to smother it.

There was some splendid play on 25 minutes when Andrea Pirlo's chopped pass came over the defence and to Cassano for a delightful flick with the inside of his foot, but Douglas saved the Scots by tipping it over the bar. The goalkeeper fumbled a Totti low cross and Gilardino almost made the most of the error. Then Gilardino and Cassano both backheeled a Chiellini cross, though without enough power to trouble Douglas.

Gilardino's glancing header was also dealt with as the Azzurri began piling on the pressure and dominating possession. Cassano thought he had opened the scoring on the half-hour mark when he lifted Totti's pass over Douglas, but it was disallowed for a very tight offside position.

There was no doubting the goal a few minutes later, as Milan midfielder Andrea Pirlo curled in a magnificent right-footed free kick from just outside the area. Douglas was left stranded by the wicked bend on the ball as it lifted over the wall and in at the near post.

There was more bad news for the Scots moments later, as Douglas was forced out with a groin problem and replaced by 22-year-old Craig Gordon. Totti's deflected volley went out for a corner kick, and Gigi Buffon's first touch was to block a Kenny Miller cross from the left on 44 minutes.

Italy really should've gone into the break 2-0 up, as Cassano exchanged passes with Gilardino and rolled across for Totti only for the Roma captain to incredibly balloon over the bar from seven yards.

The rain intensified in the second half and made the pitch in the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza rather slippery. A scuffle broke out at the restart with Gennaro Gattuso and Nigel Quashie booked for their part. The Milan midfielder will be suspended for the next qualifier in Norway on June 4.

The Scots nearly grabbed an equaliser soon after as Italy were sluggish. Quashie burst down the right and saw his half-volley pushed out for a corner by Buffon. Miller than outsprinted two defenders on Barry Ferguson's pass and had his finish been firmer then Buffon could've been in real trouble, but he and Cannavaro managed to smother the shot with some difficulty.

Cassano was perhaps a little too eager to play to the gallery and attempted to cut round the defender on Gilardino's headed pass rather than shoot when he had the space. Cassano skipped past a couple of players on the byline and his cross into the centre was cleared by the Scottish defence. There was also a handling offence from McNamara, but it was involuntary.

Naysmith's central effort was easily held by Buffon. The atmosphere at the San Siro appeared to be relaxed, but police intervened to charge when violence broke out in the stands among a small group of supporters.

Daniele De Rossi was the first Azzurri substitute of the game as he surprisingly replaced his Roma teammate Totti, who had been steadily drifting out of the game after an impressive first half performance. Cassano wasted another golden opportunity, trying to find space amid a crowd of Scottish defenders, and moments later De Rossi set up Gilardino only for the Parma striker to hesitate in the six-yard box.

Palermo centre-forward Luca Toni replaced Cassano for the final eight minutes, leaving two tall strikers upfront. Mauro German Camoranesi's low cross was heading towards Gilardino in the centre before a desperate defensive intervention stopped the ball dead.

Chiellini fought valiantly to earn the ball back and got a free kick for Italy. It was at roughly the same spot as the opening goal and had exactly the same outcome, as Andrea Pirlo curled in another magnificent set-piece to leave the goalkeeper stranded.

Italy: Buffon; Bonera, Cannavaro, Materazzi, Chiellini; Camoranesi, Pirlo, Gattuso; Totti (De Rossi 71); Gilardino, Cassano (Toni 82)

Scotland: Douglas (Gordon 37); McNamara, Pressley, Weir, Naysmith; Caldwell; Hartley (McCann 75), Ferguson, Quashie, McCulloch; Miller (O'Connor 86)

Lippi: The points were imperative

Football Italia

Marcello Lippi praised Scotland's performance and explained some of his tactical choices after their 2-0 win over Scotland. "We did what we needed to in the first half with the strikers creating plenty of chances and they should've sealed it up before half-time," commented the Coach.

He started with an all-attack line-up that included Francesco Totti, Antonio Cassano and Alberto Gilardino upfront, but the team slowly lost its inspiration in the second half. Lippi raised eyebrows by deciding to replace Totti and Cassano with defensive midfielder Daniele De Rossi and centre-forward Luca Toni.

"Of course you use up energy and need to put in fresh legs after a while," insisted the Azzurri boss. "The team can only support three such creative strikers on a pitch like this for so long. The really important thing today was three points."

The former Juventus Coach also reserved praise for Scotland, who worried Gianluigi Buffon on a couple of occasions. "This isn't the same Scotland side that lost so easily in the opening games, as they had some good opportunities that Buffon was able to smother," he said on Walter Smith's debut.

The hero of the evening was without doubt Andrea Pirlo, who scored both goals from set-pieces to ensure the points were safe.

"I am very happy as this was an important game. To score two goals in my home stadium is even more satisfying," said the Milan midfielder. "We played well for about an hour, but it was only normal for the tempo to dip after a while. It went well, but we should really have sealed up the points in the first half."

Pirlo was frozen out of the side under Giovanni Trapattoni, but the new Coach seems eager to use quality players in midfield rather than packing it with aggressive figures.

"We are starting a new era with Lippi and have many talented players at his disposal, so here's hoping we manage to make the most of them. There were more experienced players ahead of me in the running before and now I hope that I've become a key member."

Giorgio Chiellini impressed in his first start for the senior Azzurri side, having previously played snippets of friendly games against Finland and Russia. "I am certainly satisfied with the victory and my performance. This was an important test for me and I think I passed," said the Fiorentina defender who stepped in for the suspended Gianluca Zambrotta.

"We tried to find a balance with the three forwards and they came back to help out the midfield. When you have strikers of such talent it is only right to use them. I have a long way to go in every aspect of my game, but I'm still very young and have the time to work on it."

Chiellini is still part-owned by Juventus and reports suggest he could be brought back as a permanent replacement for Zambrotta in the summer. "I just hope to continue along this path and in my first Serie A season I have already reached the Azzurri, so I can't really ask for more than that," he said.

Juventus strike sponsorship oil

Football Italia

The Juventus club coffers have been boosted by a £76m deal with Tamoil, making them the top earning European side from shirt sponsorship. The Turin giants have signed a five-year contract with the petrol company to sponsor their shirts in all competitions from July 2005, expanding on their current agreement on Champions' League and Coppa Italia jerseys.

Libyan company Tamoil also have an option to extend the deal for another five years for an extra £90m should the co-operation be deemed successful. Currently, the Serie A leaders' shirts are sponsored by Sky Sport Italia in the League and ensure Juve are the European club with the highest income from shirt sponsorship.

According to Sporteconomy, the Bianconeri will earn £15.2m per season, considerably more than second-placed Bayern Munich's annual income of £11.7m from T-Mobile. Siemens provide Real Madrid with £9.7m per season, while Manchester United pick up £9m from Vodafone.

Three of the top ten shirt sponsorship earners hail from Serie A, with Milan in ninth place and Inter closing the list.

Rossoneri join Bonera race

Football Italia

Italian international Daniele Bonera will start against Scotland this evening and Milan are the latest club to be associated with a transfer swoop. The Parma defender is tipped to set the summer transfer gossip alight when he is likely to be sold in order to keep the Tardini side afloat.

Up until now, Juventus have been the runaway favourites to capture his signature, but today Turin-based newspaper 'Tuttosport' has warned that there is a new contender in the race. Milan are eager to bring some fresh blood into a defence where only Alessandro Nesta is the right side of 30, while Bonera's versatility would enable him to play in central defence or at right-back.

The key to the deal could lie with Alberto Gilardino, as the deal to bring in the hitman is almost completed and 23-year-old Bonera could be thrown in as part of an expanded agreement with Parma.

The importance of Marcos Cafu on the right has become all too apparent this season and a back-up is necessary for the new campaign. Lecce's soon to be Italian international Marco Cassetti was the prime candidate, but Massimo Oddo's imminent split with Lazio has alerted the San Siro giants to potential bargain.

Giants court Lecce star Cassetti

Football Italia

Lecce have confirmed that offers have been received for their young starlets, none more so than Marco Cassetti. "Cassetti is already a hot property on the transfer market," revealed director of sport Pantaleo Corvino. "We have received some intriguing offers for him, but also for Mirko Vucinic, Lorenzo Stovini and Cristian Ledesma."

Winger Cassetti can also play as a fullback and has attracted interest from Milan, Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Valencia. He is set to receive his first Azzurri cap in next week's friendly match against Iceland, according to reports.

"I would prefer not to say who has made the bids right now," added Corvino. "The right time for discussing transfers is at the end of the season."

It is well known that Argentine midfielder Ledesma is a target for Roma and Milan, while Stovini is of interest to the Rossoneri and 21-year-old Vucinic has made quite a splash with 11 goals in 20 appearances this year.

U-21: Gentile pleased with progress

Football Italia

The comfortable 2-0 victory over Scotland maintained Italy's 100 per cent qualifying record, but Claudio Gentile and scorer Rolando Bianchi remain cautious.

"This is a good step forward for the team, but until we have the mathematic certainty of qualification then we cannot start celebrating," warned the Under-21 Coach.

There were precious few scoring opportunities from either side for the first hour, but once the Azzurrini broke through with Bianchi they quickly doubled their lead through Alessandro Rosina.

"We couldn't find space in the first half and so resorted to pumping long balls forward for the strikers. Matters really improved after the break when we finally made the most of the flanks."

Gentile's choices were inspired, as debutantes Gianluca Curci (Roma) and Marco Motta (Atalanta) impressed, while substitute Biagio Pagano gave the midfield that extra creativity.

"Pagano's entrance was the move that changed the game and allowed us to win," confirmed the tactician. "That was when I saw the Italy we all know and relaxed into our stride."

Another key figure in the current crop of youngsters was Rolando Bianchi, who is warming the bench at Cagliari this season despite scoring six goals in seven games at international level.

"We were poor in the first half and couldn't get our movements or tempo right," explained the striker. "Matters greatly improved after the break. I always feel very settled when I join my Under-21 teammates here, but I have a long way to go and can only get there through hard work."

Meanwhile, thousands of Scottish fans have poured into Milan awaiting tonight's 2006 World Cup qualifier and for the most part it has been a pacific invasion. A 38-year-old supporter from Glasgow was hospitalised with a fractured jaw after an altercation with a North African man near the Stazione Centrale at 4am.

Blasi: "Ready for Fiorentina and Liverpool"

Juventus.com

Dear supporters,

I’ve just come back from the National team, happy for the win over Scotland and thrilled by playing aginst Iceland. Wearing the Azzurri’s outfit always gives a boost, which is what you need in the climax of the season. We’ll be playing two crucial matches in four days, against Fiorentina and Liverpool: two clubs very different one from the other, who play a different kind of football but they still have some points in common.

For example, both will play at home, in two stadiums that I don’t think are going to give us a warm welcome: when Artemio Franchi sees the Bianconeri it turns into mayhem and Anfield Road too has always been a difficult playground due to the extraordinary boost supporters can give the Reds.

Another fact in common between the two is how important the match against Juventus is for them, even though for different reasons. In the match against us, both Fiorentina and Liverpool risk part of their season, if not all of it: for the Viola, beating us may mean redeeming their performance in this season and not only for the points at stakes they need; for the Englishmen, Champions League is the last chance to win something, the last competion where they are still racing. Therefore, we do expect both teams to be fierce and with great motivations.

Another point in common is given by the absence of many of their players, particularly upfront. Although in such occasions clubs give 200%, I think this is a favourable fact for us. And, to say it all, I’m not even worried by the hostile environment we’ll find in Florence and Liverpool: we’re used to it and I can assure you that the Olimpico and the Santiago Bernabeu are not less than them.

As for motivations, well, we have a great deal! We’re racing for the Scudetto and we want to win the Champions League more than anyone else: I think these motivations are more than enough to assure you that, as usual, we’ll give our best to win every match.

Affectionately yours,

Manuele Blasi

Thuram and the challenge with Milan

Juventus.com

“A play-off to win the title would be great for the show but I don’t think that players, both in Milan and in Juventus, are much interested in the way the question will be sorted out. What matters is that the Scudetto is won by one’s own side.” Lilian Thuram likes to talk about the race between Milan and Juventus.

The occasion to have a chat with the defender is the Player of The Month award, which was given to Lilian at the Juventus Store in Turin, at Via Garibaldi. “At the moment, the two teams keep winning – he continued – and none of them is going to give up, until the end. The first one who makes a mistake, however, will pay a high price. I hear people say that Juventus is more practical, while Milan is more resourceful than us but I don’t think this is true: they play a different kind of game, which is more based on ball possession but if both club have reached the same level at this point of the race it means that both are strong and equal.

I think this is the reason why some people are thinking about a title play-off, yet when it’s 9 matchdays until the end”. When he was asked about the face-to-face match being decisive or not, Thuram answered: “No, I don’t think it will be. Before the match at the San Siro there are still many matches to play and each of them may change something in the table. Just look at the match against Reggina: we played the worst first half of the season and it was not easy at all to gain the three points. First we have to win all the matches, starting from the one against Fiorentina, and then we can think about the match against Milan.”

Lippi lines up offensive Italy

Football Italia

Italy boss Marcello Lippi is set to unleash a trident attack in the World Cup qualifier against Scotland on Saturday. The tactician seems orientated to start with a 4-3-3, which will see Alberto Gilardino, Francesco Totti and Antonio Cassano fielded simultaneously.

Totti, who has recovered from a slight foot injury, will be given a free role behind the two youngsters. Should the former Juve boss go ahead with the system, it will be the third time that's he's fielded such an attacking formation is his brief reign.

He used it against Slovenia in October with limited success after the Azzurri lost 1-0 in a shock defeat. The trident was formed by Totti, Gilardino and Mauro Esposito on that night. Lippi tested it again last month when Totti, Vincenzo Montella and Christian Vieri started in the 2-0 friendly win over Russia.

Italy should line-up with Gigi Buffon in goal, protected by a back-four of Daniele Bonera, Fabio Cannavaro, Marco Materazzi and Fiorentina left-back Giorgio Chiellini. The midfield three should be Andrea Pirlo in the middle, Juve's in-form Mauro Camoranesi on the right and Milan workhouse Gennaro Gattuso on the left.

Italy will start the game as hot favourites for victory but Scotland boss Walter Smith seems unperturbed.

"You have to be optimistic otherwise it is impossible to be a football manager," he said. "We know a draw would be great but even if we lose I do not think the other sides in the group will gain that much. We are aiming for a play-off spot and I believe we can achieve that."

Italy are currently top of Group 5 with nine points, Scotland are seven points adrift in penultimate place.

Lippi demands Azzurri victory

Football Italia

Italy boss Marcello Lippi has told his players that he expects nothing less than a win against Scotland. "I have just one thought about the match, I want the three points," the tactician stated on Friday.

The Azzurri resume their World Cup qualification at the San Siro on Saturday, with the tactician expected to field an offensive looking 4-3-3 system.

"I won't announce my side even if everyone of you have all understood it," added the former Juventus maestro. "It is just important that everyone gives their best, no matter what system we use. We need a win as we will then have three tough away games to play."

Italy will understandably start the tie as hot favourites for victory but Lippi isn't underestimating the Scots.

"Things have levelled out in this sport and nothing is easy anymore," he noted. "I just want a win. If we entertain as well then that will be a bonus. Scotland can play in a wide variety of ways but we must just be focused and leave nothing to chance."

Francesco Totti will support Alberto Gilardino and Antonio Cassano in a trident attack, but Lippi hinted that the Roman will be given a 'free' role. "Totti is an attacking midfielder rather than a striker," he explained. "But we'll see how the game develops because I could change things during the 90 minutes."

The Scotland clash will also allow the boss to finally field Antonio Cassano for the first time since his summer appointment. "I wanted to get to know him and I have done," noted Lippi. "Cassano just needs to stay calm and play football the way he does without any extra responsibilities.

"I have an excellent squad under me and they have great faith in the work that we are doing right now. I'm very happy with what we have done this week."

Italy (probable): Buffon; Bonera, Cannavaro, Materazzi, Chiellini; Camoranesi, Pirlo, Gattuso; Totti, Gilardino, Cassano

Chiellini: Viola opened Azzurri door

Football Italia

Giorgio Chiellini says he wouldn't be preparing to face Scotland on Saturday had he remained at Juventus. The young defender joined Fiorentina on loan in August and has been rewarded for his outstanding season with promotion from the Under-21 set-up.

"If I had stayed at Juventus then I wouldn't be here today," he said from the Azzurri training base. "I doubt that I would have been selected if I was still in Turin."

Chiellini is likely to start the World Cup qualifier given that Gianluca Zambrotta, who is ironically Juve's first-choice left-back, is suspended. "I never expected to have such a positive season," he added. "I know that I have worked hard and that will be proved if I play against Scotland tomorrow."

Chiellini could return to Turin in the summer, but his teammate Enzo Maresca insists he doesn't want a Delle Alpi reunion. The midfielder is also on loan in Florence from the Old Lady, but he seems to have had enough of the Italian giants.

"I want to stay a Viola," said the 25-year-old who has been shipped out on loan to numerous clubs in the past. "Juventus? I hope they don't win anything this season. That remark is aimed at the club and not the players." Maresca will soon get a chance to prove a point when Juve travel to Florence after the international break.

Italy 2 - 0 Scotland

Football Italia

Two goals in the space of six minutes ensured the Italian Under-21 side sank Scotland to notch up their fifth win on the trot.

Claudio Gentile's Azzurrini were looking to maintain their 100 per cent record in the fifth game of the qualifying campaign and welcomed their Scottish counterparts. Roma goalkeeper Gianluca Curci earned a start after his impressive form for the Giallorossi, while Fiorentina's Gianpaolo Pazzini partnered Cagliari benchwarmer Rolando Bianchi.

Alessandro Rosina's long-range effort was deflected off target, while Pazzini's glancing header from a Potenza free kick was inches wide of the woodwork. Italy had a great chance to take the lead on the half-hour mark when Atalanta man Marco Motta's cross came in, but both Pazzini and Rosina had close-range efforts charged down by the desperate Scottish defence.

The first real Scottish chance came on the stroke of half-time when McCunnie's effort whistled past the post, while Andrea Lazzari's volley was wayward. Mantovani's error almost let Riordan in for a chance in the second half, while Curci comfortably got behind Wilson's effort in an uninspired encounter.

The deadlock was eventually broken after 65 minutes. 18-year-old Atalanta starlet Motta ran down the right flank and put in a fine cross for Rolando Bianchi to turn in. McCunnie's shot was easily saved and moments later Italy thumped the woodwork with Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani on Pazzini's assist as the game finally sprung to life.

The Azzurrini ensured the points were safe soon after, as Parma youth product Rosina - currently playing in Serie B with Verona - curled in a splendid left-foot strike from the edge of the box to sink Scotland.

A fine save prevented Bianchi adding to his tally on the counter-attack and a late shot from Brescia substitute Daniele Mannini was parried at the near post, but the Scots could find no response after that devastating double blow.

Italy remain top of Group Five with 15 points, having scored 10 goals and conceded just one, while Scotland continue to prop up the standings with two points from four games.

Italy U21: Curci; Motta, Bovo, Mantovani, Potenza; Rosina, Aquilani (Montolivo 85), Donadel, Lazzari (Pagano 53); Bianchi, Pazzini (Mannini 78)

Thuram: Lay off AC Milan trio over blood tests

Tribal Football

Juventus defender Lilian Thuram says he is in favour of blood doping tests, but also backs the decisions of AC Milan's three players to refuse to give a sample. Milan trio Rino Gattuso, Giuseppe Pancaro and Clarence Seedorf have all refused to take a blood test during this season, which has caused uproar in Italy.

But Thuram said: "I am in favour of the blood tests. If I was asked, I would undergo it. But I do not see why players should be criticised for refusing when the laws allow them to."

Fiorentina chief confirms Juventus talks over on-loan trio

Tribal Football

Fiorentina director general Fabrizio Lucchesi has confirmed talks are scheduled with Juventus at the end of the season over their loan players. Fiorentina co-own the registrations of Giorgio Chiellini, Fabrizio Miccoli and Enzo Maresca and Lucchesi revealed: "On the co-ownership players we have with Juve, we will speak in June.

"We already have an agreement with Luciano Moggi (Juve director general)."

Barcelona rival Juventus for Lazio's Giannichedda

Tribal Football

Juventus are facing competition for Lazio midfielder Giuliano Giannichedda.

It was revealed earlier this week that Juve coach Fabio Capello had urged chief Luciano Moggi to move for Giannichedda, who is off contract in June. Capello sees the experienced midfielder as an ideal foil for Emerson and the chance to land a player of Giannichedda's class was ideal for Juve in their current tight financial situation.

However, its emerged Inter Milan and Barcelona have also made contact with the player's representatives. Only Lazio are to have submitted a concrete offer to Giannichedda for next season, but he is likely to wait to see what other clubs are prepared to table before committing to the Rome club.

Tottenham must find £10M for Dortmund ace Rosicky

Tribal Football

Tottenham will have to cough up £10 million if they want to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Tomas Rosicky. The Czech Republic international confirmed yesterday that Tottenham had been in talks with both his agent and BVB about an end-of-season deal.

Dortmund have serious financial problems and the summer sale of the 24-year-old Rosicky looks an increasingly likely prospect, with the German side looking for around £10m. Rosicky, who was reportedly a target for Chelsea, Porto and Barcelona last summer, insists the lack of European football at Spurs would not affect his desire to move to the club.

"Given the current position of Dortmund in the Bundesliga there are no guarantees that I would be playing in Europe with Borussia either," he said. "Spurs are a traditional club and I'm pleased to know they want me."
