Capello ponders attacking options

Football Italia

Juventus boss Fabio Capello has failed to rule out the use of a trident attack in their Champions’ League tie at Real Madrid. The Bianconeri fielded a 3-4-3 formation in the 2-1 win over Udinese on Sunday, and the tactician insists he could try something similar next Tuesday.

"We’ll have to wait and see," he told Spanish newspaper AS. "I’m a Coach who looks at the strengths and weaknesses of opponents, who considers what I have available and then I make a decision."

Capello’s statement will come as a welcome boost to the recently dropped Alessandro Del Piero, who returned to action in Week 24 alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic and David Trezeguet.

"Alex has had a few minor injury problems, especially with his Achilles’ tendon, but he has worked well recently and is getting back to form," explained the former Milan boss.

Nevertheless, Capello is expecting a real battle at the Bernabeu against the club he led to the Spanish title in 1997.

"Real are a well balanced and strong side," he continued. "The arrival of Wanderley Luxemburgo has seen them improve defensively. He’s sorted out the midfield too so that the side can take advantage of the strength and speed of their forwards."

The boss is also well aware of the fact that his men will have to get past Walter Samuel, a central defender who worked under Capello at Roma before his summer switch to La Liga.

"Samuel is a key figure in their defence, he is now virtually a fundamental player for the team, one with few weaknesses," he stated. "I would say we have a 50 percent chance of going through."

However, Real technical director Arrigo Sacchi is convinced that his club will reach the last eight of the European Cup.

"Juventus are a compact and organised side, made up of great players but we won’t be intimidated," he stated. "We have what is needed to win and it is basically up to us to do that."

Buffon and Capello clash?

Football Italia

There are more signs of tension at Juventus after boss Fabio Capello reportedly ‘clashed’ with Gigi Buffon. Reports in Italy today insist that the tactician angered the ‘keeper, by allegedly criticising his performance in the 2-1 win against Udinese on Sunday.

Capello is understood to have approached the No 1 about the Dino Fava goal he conceded - a strike that was wrongly ruled out for offside by the referee. The former Roma boss is also believed to have questioned his recent positioning for crosses.

Buffon, widely considered as the best shot-stopper in the world, is understood to have not taken kindly to the criticism, concluding training in a subdued mood.

These have been difficult weeks for the Turin giants after they saw their lead over Milan slashed from eight to two points in just 180 minutes of football. Today’s reported clash with Buffon comes just a week after another alleged incident at the club’s training base.

Stories last Friday suggested that club official held crisis talks with the squad, resulting in an alleged exchange of angry words between Capello and captain Alessandro Del Piero. The club subsequently denied the story.

The Old Lady, who face a crucial Champions’ League trip to Real Madrid next Tuesday, have yet to comment on this morning’s claims.

Juventus star Emerson reveals Real Madrid talks

Tribal Football

Juventus midfielder Emerson has confirmed he came close to joining Real Madrid in the summer. Ahead of the two clubs' Champions League meeting next week, the Brazil international revealed: "The Spanish were interested, like other clubs.

"I never met them directly, but, yes, my agent did. But I had given my word to Juve, I could not betray that. I am happy here in Turin, where I find myself very comfortable."

Bologna president tells Juventus, Real Madrid: £7M for Meghni

Tribal Football

Bologna president Giuseppe Gazzoni Frascara says midfielder Mourad Meghni will not be sold for less than £7 million in the summer. Real Madrid and Juventus are battling for the young Frenchman and Frascara declared: "For sure we would not like to lose him.

"But I am in agreement with my fellow directors when they say he will not leave for less than £7 million. If he was to stay with us, I am sure his price would increase even more."

Inter Milan, Juventus move for Man Utd target Menez

Tribal Football

Inter Milan and Juventus have joined Premiership interest for Sochaux starlet Jeremy Menez. The teenage striker is regarded as a better talent at 17 than Arsenal ace Thierry Henry and alongside £9 million Fiorentina signing Valeri Bojinov is rated the hottest new name in European football.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly tried to sign Menez as an amateur last year, while Chelsea were linked with the youngster last week.

Juve and Inter are also following his progress, with both Italian giants posting scouts this month to track Menez in games and also training leading up to possible negotiations with Sochaux in the summer.

Unlike the Premiership clubs, both Juve and Inter would be prepared to allow Menez to develop in France and instead of seeking an outright transfer immediately, would be happy to secure first refusal on the exciting youngster.

Juventus to wreck AC Milan's Mozart plans

Tribal Football

Juventus are threatening to wreck AC Milan's bid to land Reggina midfielder Mozart in the summer. Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has begun to prepare an offer for the Brazilian as he seeks an understudy to midfield playmaker Andrea Pirlo.

However, Juve director general Luciano Moggi's interest has also been made public this week as Mozart's form has caught the Turin giants' attention this season. Moggi and coach Fabio Capello want to secure a creative midfield partner for Emerson next season and Mozart has jumped to the top of their shopping list.

Giving Juve an edge over Milan in negotiations is their good relationship with Reggina, which already has co-ownership agreements with two of their players in Viktor Boudianski and Ilyas Zeytulaev.

Chelsea's Abramovich stuns AC Milan with Kaka demand

Tribal Football

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich stunned AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani last night by asking him to name his price for midfielder Kaka.

The Brazil international is the one player Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has asked Abramovich for this season and the Russian is determined to do all he can to prise the free-scoring midfielder away from the San Siro.

Abramovich was in Milan yesterday to honour Milan striker Andrei Shevchenko at a function organised by Russian newspaper Sport Express.

Galliani took advantage of their meeting to discuss the permanent signing of on-loan Chelsea striker Hernan Crespo. But Abramovich was unimpressed by the players on offer - Jon Dahl Tomasson, Khaka Kaladze and Massimo Ambrosini.

He made it clear: Crespo will either go for £7 million cash or for a player swap deal involving Kaka.

Chelsea prepare £12M raid for Corinthians ace Tevez

Tribal Football

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is lining up a £12 million raid for Corinthians striker Carlos Tevez. The Mirror says Abramovich hopes to bring over Tevez in the summer from Brazilian club Corinthians - who bought him only months ago for £8m from Boca Juniors.

Abramovich is said to have an interest in Corinthians, who were bought by Iranian Kia Joorbachian and his Media Sports Investments company. Despite denials by the Russian's camp there are strong connections between the pair and insiders claim Corinthians have only bought Tevez to prepare him for Chelsea.

Just 21, Tevez has broken into the national side but should collect the caps in World Cup qualifiers to make him eligible for a move to Britain next season.

Messina - Juventus

Football Italia

Juventus are back on track following their win over Udinese, but will they use the new tactical system in Sicily?

Fabio Capello gambled with a 3-4-3 formation in Turin last week and emerged with a 2-1 victory that eased the pressure on the Bianconeri. Alessandro Del Piero, David Trezeguet and Zlatan Ibrahimovic might be considered too much of a risk away to Messina, where the home side has only lost twice this season. Olivier Kapo and Alessio Tacchinardi are likely to miss out with injury, while Pavel Nedved is close to a comeback after a month out with a knee problem.

Messina’s away form is very poor, but few teams have emerged from the Stadio San Filippo with anything. Midfielder Coppola is suspended, while Jorge Mamede, Luca Fusco and ex-Juve player Nicola Amoruso are doubts. Arturo Di Napoli looks set to start after his controversial goal in the 2-2 draw at Siena last Sunday.

Messina (probable): Storari; Zoro, Rezaei, Zanchi, Parisi; Iliev, Giampa, Donati, Sullo; Zampagna, Di Napoli

Juventus (probable): Buffon; Zebina, Thuram, Cannavaro, Pessotto; Camoranesi, Emerson, Blasi, Zambrotta; Trezeguet, Ibrahimovic

Nedved likely to face Real

Football Italia

Pavel Nedved looks set to play against Real Madrid on Tuesday after he returned to training with Juventus. The midfielder worked alongside his teammates yesterday which has increased optimism over his use at the Santiago Bernabeu on 22 February.

The Czech ace has been struggling with a knee injury for the last three weeks but things are looking good for his return. Nedved was able to sprint and work with the ball yesterday, finishing off the session with a light stretch.

His physical condition will be continually monitored over the next few days before a decision will be made on whether he is ready to return. The general feeling is that the former Golden Ball winner will begin on the bench against Messina on Saturday, before starting in the Champions’ League clash.

Meanwhile, Messina have their problems ahead of the Week 25 tie against the League leaders. Boss Bortolo Mutti is without the suspended Aronica and Coppola, plus injured captain Sullo.

Juventus ace Nedved closer to retirement

Tribal Football

Juventus star Pavel Nedved could hang up his boots after next year's World Cup. The Czech Republic international has refused a new contract offer from Juve - fueling speculation that he intends to retire when his current deal runs out in the summer of 2006.

Nedved has been plagued by injury over the last 18 months and has admitted some frustration at the way his body has struggled to cope with the demands of keeping Juve successful both domestically and in Europe.

In talks with Juve officials, Nedved made it clear that he could decide to retire once his current deal runs out next summer.

Juventus dismiss Totti swoop

Football Italia

Juventus have distanced themselves from reports that they are interested in signing Roma’s Francesco Totti. The Italian international has been associated by some with a Turin switch but the Delle Alpi outfit insist they don’t want him.

"I don’t see why we need to do extraordinary things on the transfer market," director general Luciano Moggi told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli. "The players we have already have proved themselves to be good enough and the fact that we are top of the League shows that."

The chances of seeing Totti leave the capital for Juventus seem very slim, almost impossible in fact.

Although Fabio Capello, Emerson and Jonathan Zebina made the same move at the start of this season, Totti is unlikely to follow them. The No 10 is a symbol of the Giallorossi and would find it hard to ‘betray’ the fans by joining their great rivals.

Meanwhile, Moggi was asked to explain the secret behind his club’s success over the last decade.

"The reality is that it is difficult to define the ingredients that make a team good," he added. "You certainly need professionalism, something that is not missing at this club and a characteristic which we consider as our best weapon."

Bologna want Meghni offers

Football Italia

Bologna have invited clubs interested in signing rising star Mourad Meghni to make a bid for the Frenchman. The France U-21 international is highly-rated in the European game which has earned him the ‘new Zinedine Zidane’ tag.

"Mourad Meghni is not untouchable," stated Rossoblu chief Renato Cipollini. "There are none at a club like Juventus so how can we make anyone unavailable for transfer?"

The creative attacking midfielder has been at the Stadio Dall’Ara since the summer of 2000 but only now is he starting to make an impact. The 20-year-old, who was born in Paris, has been continually linked with the likes of Real Madrid, Juventus and ambitious Palermo recently.

Bologna initially stated that the starlet would remain but they are now willing to consider any bids. Meghni, whose current contract expires in 2007, is expected to cost his next club close to £7m.

Juventus to use Legrottaglie in deal for Bologna's Meghni

Tribal Football

Bologna coach Carlo Mazzone says he wants to hold onto defender Nicola Legrottaglie next season.

Legrottaglie is on-loan at Bologna from Juventus and could be used by the Turin giants as a bargaining chip in talks over the future of French youngster Mourad Meghni. Juve want first refusal on Meghni, who is also being targeted by Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, Mazzone has still to confirm if he will sign a new contract for next season.

Bordeaux president tells Juventus, AC Milan to forget Mavuba

Tribal Football

Bordeaux president Jean-Louis Triaud has declared midfielder Rio Mavuba will not be sold during the summer market. The French international, who has been likened to Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira, is being chased by Manchester United, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Italian giants Juventus and AC Milan.

But Triaud declared last night: "Mavuba will also remain here next season: we want to extend his contract for another two seasons."

Inter Milan use Kallon to land Monaco's Evra

Tribal Football

Inter Milan chiefs are discussing a summer bid for AS Monaco left-back Patrice Evra. The 24 year-old is being lined up by Inter as an alternative to Lazio's Cesar, who is now in talks over a new contract with the Rome club.

Its been suggested Inter secured first option on Evra after negotiating the loan of Mohammad Kallon earlier this season with Monaco. The French club have so far refused to comment on the reports.

After failing in bids for Cesar, Alessandro Parisi (Messina) and Asier del Horno (Athletic Bilbao), Inter have now turned to Evra and intermediaries have been told he can be signed for around £5 million at the end of this season.

A permanent deal for Kallon could be negotiated in part-exchange for Evra, with Inter coach Roberto Mancini desperate to end doubts over the strength of the left-side of his midfield.

Serie A shines in benefit game

Football Italia

Alessandro Del Piero and Gianfranco Zola were on target in last night’s Tsunami Match at the Nou Camp. The Italian duo netted for Andriy Shevchenko's European XI but it wasn’t enough for victory as Ronaldinho's World XI collected a 6-3 win.

Samuel Eto'o and Ronaldinho put their side 2-0 up in a game where the world’s top players helped to raise money for the tsunami relief fund. Juventus ace Del Piero made it 2-1, only for Eto'o to give his side a two-goal advantage yet again.

The European team drew level though when the Cagliari pair of Zola, with a lob, and David Suazo found the back of the net. But it was Ronaldinho’s men who proved victorious following a brace from Henri Camara and a strike by Cha Du-Ri.

Around 40,000 fans turned up for the game, which was refereed by Pierluigi Collina, with all proceeds going to the FIFA/Asian Football Confederation Tsunami Solidarity Fund.

Injured Nedved in fitness battle

Football Italia

Pavel Nedved is in a race against time to prove his fitness ahead of the Champions’ League clash against Real Madrid. The Juventus ace knows that if he’s to feature at the Santiago Bernabeu on February 22, he realistically must play some part in the Messina game on Saturday.

The Czech international was initially pencilled in to return from injury in Week 24 but he wasn’t included in the squad that beat Udinese 2-1.

Nedved’s been on the treatment table for the past few weeks ever since picking up a knee problem. The 2003 European Footballer of the Year limped off in the win against Brescia on January 23 and he’s still not fully recovered.

Nedved again trained separately from the squad on Monday, escalating fears that he won’t be available for the Spanish trip. The midfield dynamo, who Juventus have struggled to replace, will undergo a further medical today to assess his progress.

Capello is certainly hoping that Nedved gets the green light to play given his importance to the side.

"He is a player who offers great security to the rest of his teammates during games," explained the Coach. "We could do with him in the team. Since Wanderley Luxembourgo took over Madrid have improved. They recover the ball a lot better and they are better defensively."

Capello, who led Madrid to the Liga title in 1997, added: "This is the tie of the round and I think it is going to be very, very close."

Capello: Real Are Lucky

Goal.com

The Juventus coach, ahead of the Champions League encounter between his side and the Spanish giants, believes that luck has been on Real’s side in recent matches. With a week to go before the return of the Champions League, Fabio Capello has started the psychological war against his former side by dubbing the Merengues “lucky”.

“I saw on television Real’s match at Pamplona. They were quite lucky, even though they did play well. The sum of these things has made them psychologically stronger lately.”

The first leg between Real and Juventus is scheduled for the 22nd of February at the Bernabeu stadium of Real.

Nedved Fit For Bernabeu Showdown

Goal.com

Pavel Nedved has recovered completely from the left knee injury he suffered last month in league action. This means the Czech star will be available for the mouth-watering Champions League second round first leg match that pitches the mighty Bianconeri against legendary Real Madrid.

Juventus boss Fabio Capello is not expected to risk the 2003 Ballon D’Or this weekend when Juventus travel to Messina.

Cannavaro Reassures Juve Fans

Goal.com

The strong Italian defender picked up an injury in the first half of the match the Bianconeri won against Udinese. Fabio Cannavaro assured all the Juventus supporters that he will recover in time for the important Champions League encounter against Real Madrid in program next week in Spain.

“I only received a very strong knock, but there are no problems. On Saturday I will already be on the pitch against Messina.”

The Italian national team captain is also satisfied with his team’s performance against Udinese as the Bianconeri proved they are still alive and kicking.

“On Sunday we played a good match, and apart from certain episodes we proved that Juventus is still there. We are first since the start of the season, even though many thought we were finished after two defeats.”

Juventus currently hold a two point advantage over closest rivals Milan in Serie A.

More praise from Juventus coach Capello for Roma's Cassano

Tribal Football

Juventus coach Fabio Capello has again expressed his admiration for AS Roma striker Antonio Cassano. The Italy international is inside the final 18 months of his contract and his agent is still to open formal talks over a new deal.

Capello said: "Cassano is the strongest Italian forward in terms of the future, a player who will be able to do good things with Roma and also the national team. He would be great in any team."

Roma's Ferrari wants loan move away

Tribal Football

AS Roma defender Mateo Ferrari is considering his future. The former Parma fullback is unhappy with the way his move to Roma has worked out this season and is discussing with his representatives a possible loan move away in the summer.

Battle on for Meghni

SkySports

Juventus and Real Madrid are ready to lock horns in the summer in the battle to sign Bologna playmaker Mourad Meghni. The France Under-21 international is rated as one of the brightest talents in European football and is among a number of burgeoning footballers to be saddled with the tag of the 'new Zinedine Zidane'.

His displays in Serie A this season have prompted repeated rumours that he is wanted by Juventus, who have been long-term admirers of the youngster. But Spanish titans Real are also keen on the schemer, whose exit from Bologna is likely to be sanctioned in the summer.

Bologna stood firm during the January transfer window, amid rumours Meghni would leave, but it appears a €10 million bid will tempt the club. Meghni is under contract to Bologna until 2007 but the Serie A side are not expected to stand in the player's way if a major club come calling.

Ambitious Palermo have been mooted as admirers but Meghni is only interested in signing for a pre-eminent club, even it would mean being loaned out for his first season.

Real's sporting director Arrigo Sacchi is a fan of Meghni and recently returned to Italy on a mission to watch the player in action, only for injury to prevent the attacker from figuring against Roma. Sacchi is continuing to monitor Meghni through the remainder of the campaign but is likely to be rivalled by Juve at the end of the season.

Alex back as Juve win

Football Italia

Juventus returned to winning ways against Udinese with the help of a re-integrated Alessandro Del Piero. The No 10 returned to the first team line-up just days after an alleged bust-up, one denied by the club, with boss Fabio Capello.

"I’m happy as we did well under all aspects," he stated after the 2-1 win at the Stadio Delle Alpi. "I am just a little disappointed with what has been said and written about me over the last few days. I’ve never lost my serenity, I’m tranquil and ready to give my all."

The Italian has had a difficult season in Turin given his frosty relationship with Capello but he is maintaining his cool.

"Too many people are talking," added the international. "Whatever I have to say to the Coach will be said in private and not through the newspapers. "I will continue to conduct myself as a professional player but more importantly as the captain of Juventus."

Del Piero was spared another day on the bench after Capello surprisingly decided to play with a 3-4-3 system.

"The most important thing today was to win," he noted. "The numbers were not as important as the way in which we approached the game. We played too many long balls in the first half but we were a lot more consistent after the break, despite the poor playing surface."

Del Piero: I'll complain to Juventus coach Capello directly

Tribal Football

Juventus captain Alessandro del Piero insists if he has a problem with coach Fabio Capello he will "tell him to his face". Del Piero was recalled for Sunday's victory over Udinese and was asked afterwards about reports of a falling out with Capello.

"Too many players argue through the media," said Del Piero. "What I must say to Capello, I will tell him to his face. I don't feel reborn because I am playing again, I've always been calm about my situation. I am a player of Juve and will do everything I can as a player and captain for the team to win.

"Sure, the trident worked today, but I don't think it was the difference. I do not have any problem with my position. My role will change as situations change in a game."

Capello Explains Trident Choice

Goal.com

Fabio Capello surprised everyone on Sunday when he used his three attackers at the same time to form a trident like the one of Roma.

Ibrahimovic, Trezeguet and Del Piero managed to worry the Udinese rear guard as the trident created a lot. The Juve coach believes that this tactical setup can be used again in future, but only if the forwards themselves to help the midfield line.

“I thought that we could be more dangerous and create more problems to our opponents,” explained Capello, “So from now on they will have to expect various solutions.

"Will the trident be used again? Yes, but a lot depends on the will of the three attackers to help the midfield. They must take turns so that one of the forwards goes back to help make filter.”

Capello's Say On Del Piero, Totti, And Milan...

Goal.com

Fabio Capello spoke about a variety of issues in an interview with an Italian radio program ‘Radio Anch’ Io Sport’, held on Monday morning. Initially the Juventus boss reflected on the close title race the Bianconeri are involved in with Serie A champs AC Milan.

”Of late Milan have been winning games shooting on goal only once throughout the ninety minutes. They are a team full of qualities, that will contend the title with us until the end.

"However I am convinced we will stay ahead of the pack until the end of the tournament,” he said, before returning on the theme of this season, his relationship with Juventus skipper Alessandro Del Piero.

“Each one has to understand his role. I am the coach, he is a player. My decisions are taken purely for the good of the team. However even in the difficult moments, Del Piero never had anything bad to say to the press.

" Things were different in Rome where immediately after training, the radio stations knew everything we spoke about,” he added. Capello’s reference to Rome brought the conversation to Roma’s two stars, Totti and Cassano.

“Totti is a great player, and a generous and good kid. His problem is that sometimes he talks too much. Cassano is a true talent, Italy’s best prospect. He can certainly do well in the future both with Roma and La Nazionale,” he said.

Juventus lead the Serie A table with a two point edge over AC Milan.

Capello sees Cassano future

Football Italia

Juventus boss Fabio Capello has no doubts that Antonio Cassano is the future of Italian football. The two men worked together at Roma in the past and Capello’s latest comments with fuel speculation that he wants him at his disposal in Turin next season.

"He is the best Italian prospect around," the tactician told Radio Anch`io Sport on Monday morning. "He is a forward who can serve Roma and Italy well in the future. Cassano would be able to do great things in any side."

The former Bari ace has been linked with the Old Lady given that his current Giallorossi contract expires in 2006. Should he not sign an extension before the end of the season, Roma run the threat of losing the £20m youngster for nothing in 18 months.

Meanwhile, Juventus got back to winning ways on Sunday with a 2-1 win over Udinese thanks to a new 3-4-3 formation. "We played differently as I wanted three attackers," noted Capello. "But this is not new for me as I already used this system at both Real Madrid and Milan.

"Right now I think my Juventus side is more suited to 4-4-2 but I have seen that we can cause problems by playing diversely."

Milan are just two points behind the Bianconeri after the latter lost 1-0 to both Sampdoria and Palermo recently. But Capello is confident that he can end the campaign with another League title on his CV.

"Milan have a quality squad which means it will be a fight until the very end," he added. "We need to stay strong and play as we know how. If that happens then I am convinced that we will finish first."

Juventus family connection can land Zaragoza's Milito

Tribal Football

Juventus have been linked with Real Zaragoza defender Gaby Milito. The Argentine youngster is one of the most coveted players in Spain after resurrecting his career at Zaragoza following the collapse of a deal at Real Madrid due to a failed medical two years ago.

Milito is the brother of Genoa striker Diego Milito and has been linked with the ambitious Serie B club. However, Juve director general Luciano Moggi has also registered his interest with Milito's agent - who happens to be his son, Alessandro Moggi.

Its been suggested Barcelona president Joan Laporta has negotiated first option on Milito for next season, though this is yet to be confirmed by Zaragoza management.

Miccoli shuts Juventus door

Football Italia

Fiorentina ace Fabrizio Miccoli has ruled out a return to Juventus at the end of this season. The Italian international is currently at Fiorentina after the Bianconeri sold a half-share in him last summer. The Turin giants could move to recall him at the end of the campaign but Miccoli seems uninterested.

"I’m not thinking about the past now," he told TG5 on Monday afternoon. "That experience is over for me."

Miccoli is proving to be a success at the Artemio Franchi and he scored in yesterday’s 2-1 win over Parma.

"It was a really important game for us and I didn’t know whether to come off or not given that I was struggling with cramp," he added. "But I remained and scored the second goal which proved crucial. However, the whole team played well."

Miccoli has admitted that he would like to remain with the Viola but reports suggest that Palermo are very keen to sign him for the 2005-06 campaign. The Rosaneri are hoping to do business with Juventus and then reach an agreement with Fiorentina.

Capello stays practical

Football Italia

Juventus have lost their last two games and spent the week debating how to win back their smiles, but Fabio Capello remains the eternal pragmatist.

Lapo Elkann, a member of the Agnelli family that has owned this club for generations, claimed the side should get back to winning ways by enjoying its football and playing “with a smile on their faces.”

“The important thing for me is to get points, not to grin while achieving that,” stated Capello in his Press conference. “I have other things to think about.”

The Bianconeri have seen their eight-point lead over Milan cut to two thanks to defeats against little Sampdoria and Palermo. Now they face another revelation of the campaign – third-placed Udinese.

“This is a very important game against a tough squad, but I am not worried by our current form. We must play positive football and take the match to Udinese, although they are extremely adept at counter-attacks.”

There were reports that the entire squad was locked in a room with Capello and club directors for crisis talks this week.

“There was no confrontation behind closed doors,” assured the Coach. “We simply discussed tactical issues and watched the tape of our performance against Palermo to correct those errors. Director General Luciano Moggi arrived and exchanged a few words with the players, but that is all.”

Alessandro Del Piero did not even come on as a substitute in Palermo, but the captain is expected to start alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic. “David Trezeguet is feeling better now and has recovered after some slight fitness worries,” explained Capello.

The bad news for the Bianconeri is that Pavel Nedved has not recovered from his sprained knee and is not even in the squad. Alessio Tacchinardi is also sidelined with an Achilles tendon problem, so another reshuffle could be needed to fill in for the Czech international.

Gianluca Zambrotta seems set for a midfield role out wide on the left, with Alessandro Birindelli or Gianluca Pessotto taking the fullback role.

Juventus squad:

1 Buffon, 2 Ferrara, 4 Montero, 7 Pessotto, 8 Emerson, 9 Ibrahimovic, 10 Del Piero, 12 Chimenti, 15 Birindelli, 16 Camoranesi, 17 Trezeguet, 18 Appiah, 19 Zambrotta, 20 Blasi, 21 Thuram, 24 Olivera, 25 Zalayeta, 27 Zebina, 28 Cannavaro

Happy Capello Strongly Denies Del Piero Clash Reports

Goal.com

Juventus boss Fabio Capello could finally smile again as his team won after two consecutive losses.

“It was important to win after our two falls, but it was even more important to demonstrate strength and character. And we were able to,” Capello said after the 2-0 win over Udinese, before revealing the reason behind his choice to field the Del Piero-Ibrahimovic-Trezeguet trident.

“Our game plan had become predictable, so I fielded players where they least expected,” he explained.

Don Fabio also pointed out that the story which came out on La Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper this morning that indicated Capello had a heavy clash with Del Piero during the week is full of lies.

“On a certain pink newspaper certain lies came out that in particular touched juve’s old guard. I read incredible things that can jazz fans up and create polemics. That’s not right,” he said.

Juventus 2 - 1 Udinese

Juventus' Camoranesi celebrates his goal against Udinese

Juve revolutionised their tactics for this must-win game and take the pressure off by beating on-form Udinese.

The Bianconeri were beginning to feel the heat after two consecutive defeats cut their lead over Milan from eight points to just two. Olivier Kapo has been ruled out for three weeks, while Pavel Nedved and Alessio Tacchinardi failed to recover in time.

Fabio Capello staged a tactical revolution for this crunch match and opted to field a trident attack with Alessandro Del Piero, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and David Trezeguet together in a 3-4-3 system. Gianluca Zambrotta again pushed up into a more advanced role, with Mauro Camoranesi surprisingly in the centre of midfield.

Udinese have recaptured their form and third place following two wins on the trot and were confident going into this tie, even if their record at the Delle Alpi is a poor one with nine defeats and a single victory in their last ten trips to Turin. Vincenzo Iaquinta was sidelined by a bout of flu, so Dino Fava took over alongside Antonio Di Natale.

Juve's new tactics certainly paid off quickly, as within 38 seconds they had taken the lead. Zlatan Ibrahimovic ran on to a long Emerson ball forward and toe-poked it past Morgan De Sanctis.

Udinese hit back and David Pizarro's long-range effort whistled wide of the target, while at the other end Trezeguet combined with Ibrahimovic and turned a low drive past the near post.

The Friuli outfit should perhaps have drawn level on the half-hour mark when Di Natale found space out wide and rolled a low pass across the face of goal, but Dino Fava couldn't make contact at full stretch. De Sanctis punched out a curling Del Piero free kick, then a fine Felipe tackle stopped the captain scoring from seven yards.

Fabio Cannavaro was taken off at half-time with a slight injury, so Manuele Blasi stepped in and Paolo Montero returned to a defensive role. Udinese also introduced David Di Michele for a more attack-minded trident.

Del Piero's header was easily saved by De Sanctis, but four minutes into the second half Juvenus doubled their lead. Del Piero turned provider for Mauro German Camoranesi's impressive rising strike on the bounce that slotted into the top corner.

Camoranesi missed last week's game through suspension and nearly scored a second on an Ibrahimovic cut-back, but this time De Sanctis was ready with a one-handed save. Udinese were rarely dangerous and Di Michele volleyed over the bar at the back post, then soon after Paolo Montero needed a crucial tackle to stop Di Michele tapping in Di Natale's cutback.

Gigi Buffon performed a fine save on Marek Jankulovski, but there was an extremely controversial moment on 69 minutes. Dino Fava's header beat the goalkeeper, but it was disallowed for an incorrect offside decision.

Another Del Piero free kick was deflected just wide, but Udinese only found a way in during stoppages. Di Michele sprung the offside trap and lobbed Buffon.

Juventus: Buffon; Zebina, Thuram, Cannavaro (Blasi 46); Montero, Camoranesi, Emerson, Zambrotta; Ibrahimovic, Trezeguet (Pessotto 69), Del Piero (Zalayeta 83)

Udinese: De Sanctis; Bertotto, Sensini (Belleri 89), Felipe, Zenoni; Pizarro, Muntari (Pinzi 70), Jankulovski; Mauri (Di Michele 46), Fava, Di Natale

Juventus coach Capello happy with win

Tribal Football

A late goal from Udinese's David Di Michele caused Juventus' nerves to jangle but it was not enough to derail the Turin club's title bid.

Fabio Capello's men were under pressure after back-to-back defeats which, coupled with last weekend's win for nearest challengers Milan, had reduced their lead at the top to two points.

But goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Mauro Camoranesi were enough to give Juve a 2-1 win in a potentially tricky game against the Champions League chasers.

The Bianconeri got off to the perfect start when Ibrahimovic's quick thinking led to a first-minute goal for the hosts. The Sweden international burst through a static home defence and slotted the ball past Morgan De Sanctis in the Udinese goal.

Camoranesi doubled Juve's lead four minutes into the second period before Di Michele grabbed what proved to be an injury-time consolation.

Capello said afterwards: "We tried to do something a bit different with three defenders and three strikers, moving our centre of gravity further forward.

"It created a few problems for Udinese and perhaps at 2-0 we rather rested on our laurels. The Press has said some terrible lies about my rapport with Alessandro Del Piero, serving only to create controversy."

Udinese coach Luciano Spalletti said: "It isn't easy to react once you concede a goal after 40 seconds. Let us say we made life difficult for ourselves, but then we took the right approach and the team tried to pass the ball around.

"Unfortunately, Vincenzo Iaquinta had flu and would have given us different movement compared to Dino Fava."

Capello plays down rumours of Juventus crisis talks

Tribal Football

Juventus coach Fabio Capello has denied reports they held crisis talks leading up to yesterday's clash with Udinese. Capello's charges went into the game against Udinese after losing two games on the bounce, but the trainer rubbished claims of crisis talks.

"On Thursday, we had our normal technical meeting with the group, without anybody criticising anyone else," said Capello. "We have watched the video of the game against Palermo and I have spoken to the players. Then (director general) Luciano Moggi has arrived and also he has spoken to the squad. But this is normal."

Home of Juventus star Emerson hit by Molotov cocktail

Tribal Football

The family home of Juventus midfielder Emerson was the subject of a Molotov cocktail attack over the weekend. The homemade explosive device erupted near the villa of the Brazilian in a residential area in Rome.

In recent months, Emerson's villa has been the subject of vandalism since his controversial move to Juventus from AS Roma.

Juventus can land option on Real Madrid target Meghni

Tribal Football

Juventus could scupper Real Madrid's plans to sign Bologna midfielder Mourad Meghni in the summer. The French youngster is being scouted by Real GM Arrigo Sacchi and is a firm favourite of the Spanish club's president, Florentino Perez.

However, its emerged Juve can secure first refusal on Meghni if they allow defender Nicola Legrottaglie's loan with Bologna to be converted into a permanent transfer at the end of this season. Legrottaglie signed on-loan for Bologna during January and part of negotiations included an option on Meghni if the Italy international was to join permanently.

Bologna president Renato Cipollini was quick to point out yesterday: "Our loan of Legrottaglie does not necessarily give Juve first option on Meghni."

Camo can't wait for Madrid

Football Italia

Mauro German Camoranesi claims Juve will find it easier to score against Real Madrid and Udinese than Sampdoria.

“Our only problem over the last few games has been our inability to score more than our opponents,” said the Italian international after two consecutive defeats to Palermo and Samp.

“While we were winning 1-0 everything was fine, but now we let in goals and can’t seem to break down teams who put 10 men in defence. Sampdoria won without really playing football and I hate facing those types of sides. I’d rather play Real Madrid 20 times in a row, as at least they give you a chance.”

Camoranesi will have the opportunity to test out that theory later this month, when the Bianconeri travel to the Bernabeu for their Champions’ League clash. Meanwhile, Juventus must end their Serie A slump and welcome third-placed Udinese to the Stadio Delle Alpi on Sunday afternoon.

“They are a dangerous opponent, among the best sides in Italy right now. Udinese combine entertaining play with good results and fully deserve to be up there just behind Juventus and Milan.”

The Friuli outfit will consider itself a good bet for victory after Juve’s recent form and their own run of two consecutive victories.

“We have too look forward now, as the points are gone and we can’t do anything about that. We are still ahead of Milan, albeit by just two points, and winning every game is the only way to ensure it stays that way.”

Pavel Nedved had hoped to recover in time for this tie, but it seems as if the former European Player of the Year will again be sidelined by that knee injury. Alessandro Del Piero is pushing David Trezeguet for a starting spot, but Camoranesi returns from suspension.

“I am happy that the Press thinks Nedved and I were missed,” said the former Verona winger. “Those who replaced me did well enough, but I am satisfied with my performance this season. It is important to have a selection of options for each role.”

Juventus given wake-up call

Football Italia

Juventus officials have reportedly held crisis talks with the squad in a bid to end their alarming slump in results. The Bianconeri have lost their last two League games which seem to have jeopardised their Scudetto hopes. Although the Turin giants are still top, losses to Palermo and Sampdoria have allowed Milan to close the gap from eight to just two points.

Now reports in Italy suggest that the whole squad have been confronted by Juventus' infamous 'triad' and boss Fabio Capello. Luciano Moggi, Antonio Giraudo and Roberto Bettega allegedly spent 40 minutes with the squad on Thursday, once all their players had returned from international duty.

It is understood that Moggi was the first to speak, followed by Capello, in a meeting where voices were thought to have been raised. It has been a difficult week for the Old Lady of Italian football, after Moggi hit out at the standard of refereeing in Serie A.

The club's director general also criticised goalkeeper Gigi Buffon after he admitted that Milan were perhaps "technically better" than Juventus. Chief executive Giraudo also commenced a war of words with Lapo Elkann after the FIAT director, whose company are the club's major shareholders, commented that Juventus "should smile more" and buy Antonio Cassano in the summer.

It now remains to be seen whether yesterday's meeting has had the desired effects as Juventus prepare to face Udinese on Sunday.

Trez targets Platini record

Football Italia

David Trezeguet is confident that he can overtake Michel Platini to become France's all-time greatest goalscorer. The Juventus ace scored Les Bleus' equaliser in the 1-1 draw with Sweden on Wednesday, to mark his return to international football after an eight-month absence in the best possible way.

It was his 30th goal for France, taking him level with Jean-Pierre Papin and Just Fontaine. Only Platini, scorer of 41 goals, has more.

"I think 30 goals in international football is impressive," said the 27-year-old. "I am proud and very happy. Beating Platini's record is an objective of mine and I am convinced that I will be able to reach it - even if I have missed a lot of matches since Euro 2004."

Trezeguet reached the 30 mark in 56 appearances, while Fontaine incredibly got there in just 21 games and Papin played 54 internationals. Platini, who also played for Juventus, reached his tally in 72 matches.

Juventus trail Marseille starlet Nasri

Tribal Football

Juventus are hot on the trail of Olympique Marseille starlet Samir Nasri. The French U17 international has already been given his senior debut by Marseille coach Philippe Troussier this season and is being likened to Zinedine Zidane.

Juve are scouting the youngster, but were thwarted last year by Marseille when trying to sign him, with the French club securing the teenager to his first pro deal. That setback hasn't put off Juve director general Luciano Moggi, who has posted a scout to track Nasri in games and training this season.

Chelsea, Manchester United and Real Madrid are also following the midfielder.

Lazio star in demand

SkySports

Lazio stopper Giuliano Giannichedda is reportedly being chased by a host of Serie A clubs, as his contract expires in June.

Biancocelesti have opened talks with the 30-year-old, although Internazionale, Fiorentina and Juventus are all rumoured to be sniffing around. Giuseppe Papadopulo's side have offered the versatile player a three-year contract, the same length of deal that Nerazzurri and Viola are ready to make.

Giannichedda has been an integral part of Lazio's campaign this season, and the Rome faithful would be loath to see him leave. However, both Inter and Fiorentina will be capable of outbidding his current club in a wage war.

The player is understood to be content to bide his time until the summer, whilst Lazio are keen to convince him to stay. President Claudio Lotito had previously turned down a lucrative offer from Juventus for him in the January transfer window.

Palermo to snub mega offers

Football Italia

Palermo sporting director Rino Foschi insists the club have no plans to sell their best players in the summer. The Sicilian outfit have been a revelation in the top-flight this season and a number of their squad have caught the eye.

But Foschi is adamant that Palermo are not a selling club and are keen to build on this term's success in the future. "We buy players such as Luca Toni, Andrea Barzagli, Simone Barone and Cristian Zaccardo, we don't sell them," he stated.

Striker Toni has been associated with a number of top sides, while Juventus are reportedly keen on Barzagli. Foschi also denied reports that they had agreed to sign Valon Behrami in the summer with the help of Juve.

"Behrami is an excellent player and we'll continue to follow him," he explained. "But right now he is a Genoa player who is on loan at Verona. We have excellent relations with a host of clubs and that includes Juventus, but up to now we have done nothing together."
