Atalanta - Juventus

Football Italia

It is bottom meets top as Atalanta seek a crucial win against Fabio Capello's Juventus. Defeat away to Lecce last week saw the Nerazzurri cast still further adrift at the foot of the table. They have picked up just 11 points so far, and with their nearest relegation rivals already seven above, Atalanta seem certain for the drop this year.

Meanwhile, Juve are in the enviable position of standing five points clear of their closest challengers, Milan, and a win against Atalanta could reinforce their dominance. Capello has a number of injury concerns though, as well as the usual dilemma about whom to field in attack.

After twisting his knee against Brescia last week, Pavel Nedved sits out this tie, but is hopeful to be back within a month. Gianluca Zambrotta also has a muscle problem that may keep him sidelined on Sunday. Emerson and Gianluca Pessotto are both suffering from knocks and are unlikely to play.

Meanwhile, Manuele Blasi's suspension should almost certainly see Alessio Tacchinardi return to the midfield. Up front, Alessandro Del Piero looks destined for the bench again, as David Trezeguet and Zlatan Ibrahimovic continue in attack.

Atalanta must do without the injured Giampaolo Pazzini, Stefano Lorenzi and Claudio Rivalta. Coach Delio Rossi must also replace the suspended Riccardo Montolivo. The Bergamo boys will be without Demetrio Albertini too after he joined Barcelona.

Atalanta (probable): Taibi, Innocenti, Sala, Natali, Bellini, Zenoni, Bernardini, Migliaccio, Marcolini, Lazzari, Budan

Juventus (probable): Buffon, Zebina, Thuram, Cannavaro, Birindelli, Camoranesi, Appiah, Tacchinardi, Olivera, Ibrahimovic, Trezeguet

Thuram explains rejuvenation process

Football Italia

Lilian Thuram has outlined a number of factors behind his return to form with Juventus this season. The stopper endured a difficult campaign last term but is now back to his best in the least perforated defence in Serie A.

"It is down to a psychological certainty that I didn't have last year," revealed the ex-French international.

"Another reason is that I have returned to my preferred role in the centre of defence since the arrival of boss Fabio Capello," added the now former right-back. "I must also thank the whole team because if I am doing well then it is due to them too."

Juventus are currently top of the table and Thuram, who will make his 100th League appearance for Juve at Atalanta on Sunday, believes they deserve their position. "If we are in front of Milan then there is a motive," explained the 33-year-old. "Our five point advantage is correct. We're on the right road."

Thuram has been promoted to captain in recent weeks after Alex Del Piero's relegation to the bench. But the former Parma ace is pleading for the No 10 to be patient. "He is a great player," continued the 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championship winner.

"He knows what he needs to do and he must accept the current situation because he is aware that there are no certainties in football."

Juventus transfer plans revealed

Football Italia

Juventus transfer chief Luciano Moggi has spoken about the futures of Alex Del Piero, Adrian Mutu and Igor Tudor. "If we received a big offer for Del Piero then we would reject it," stated the club's director general.

"I've been ill over the last few days and perhaps I've missed something," he added. "I've heard so much about Del Piero that I had to check the League table to make sure who was top. In reality, there is no Del Piero controversy here. We are his employers and he is under our orders."

The captain's future in Turin has been cast in doubt after he was recently dropped to the bench by boss Fabio Capello. Juventus added more fuel to the fire themselves when they recently signed Adrian Mutu - a possible replacement for the No 10.

"We signed him because he was available for nothing," Moggi stated after the Romanian was sacked by Chelsea for failing a drugs test. "We won't use him this season. He will either stay with us next term or go out on loan for a year."

Mutu has been linked with a switch to Roma, possibly as part of a deal to sign Antonio Cassano. "He is an excellent player but Cassano is too expensive," noted Moggi.

The Bianconeri official also confirmed that Igor Tudor would be released in the next week. "We'll give him to either Real Sociedad, Middlesbrough or Portsmouth," he concluded. However, the Croatian defender is also being linked with Siena today.

Tudor joins struggling Siena

Football Italia

Juventus have confirmed that Igor Tudor has joined Siena on loan for the rest of the season. The Croatian was wanted by a host of Spanish and English clubs but has decided to stay in Serie A.

Tudor has left the Stadio Delle Alpi after spending most of this season on the bench following the arrival of boss Fabio Capello. The latter has preferred to start most matches with Lilian Thuram and Fabio Cannavaro in central defence.

Tudor, who has scored 15 goals in 110 games since his 1998 switch to the Old Lady, becomes the third stopper to leave Turin this January. He follows Mark Iuliano and Nicola Legrottaglie who have joined Majorca and Bologna respectively.

Juventus chief Moggi: Del Piero not for sale

Tribal Football

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi has rubbished reports that Alessandro del Piero could be sold. The out-of-form striker has been linked with Manchester United and J-League clubs Yokohama Marinos and Kashima Antlers, but Moggi declared: "Del Piero is not on the market.

"No-one has asked for him because they simply know that he is not for sale. If a club asked for him, however, we would tell them to forget it."

On reports that Adrian Mutu has been signed as Del Piero's successor, Moggi added: "Mutu will come only for the next championship and we still do not know what will be our strategy for the market. I can only say that he is not the substitute of Del Piero."

Moggi: Juventus have deal for Behrami

Tribal Football

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi has confirmed they have first refusal on Genoa midfielder Valon Behrami. The Swiss youngster has starred on-loan at Verona this season and despite attracting interest from Inter Milan and AS Roma, will eventually sign for Juve.

"Behrami is good. (Enrico) Preziosi, the president of Genoa, is a friend and before addressing others always speaks with us," said Moggi. "The Behrami situation is under control."

Juventus chief Moggi: Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Sociedad want Tudor

Tribal Football

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi has confirmed the three clubs that are chasing defender Igor Tudor. The Croatia international is being made available on-loan to the end of this season by Juve and Moggi revealed: "Tudor will be placed in a foreign country: Middlesbrough, Portsmouth or Real Sociedad.

"What happens, will be up to the club."

Tudor's agent reveals West Brom, Newcastle, Middlesbrough offers

Tribal Football

The agent of Juventus defender Igor Tudor has revealed he snubbed a host of offers from Premiership clubs to join Siena on-loan.

"Newcastle, West Brom, Rangers and Middlesbrough all made specific enquiries for Igor," agent Craig Hutchinson told skysports.com. "West Brom came up with a specific proposal. Newcastle and Fulham were following him and Middlesbrough wanted a loan move until the end of the season. Rangers also made enquiries and will continue to watch him.

"But this is the route he has chosen. He's still under contract to Juventus but the object of the exercise is to get him out there."

AC Milan reach 'verbal' for Udinese ace Jankulovski

Tribal Football

AC Milan have reportedly reached an agreement with Udinese for midfielder Marek Jankulovski.

The deal is said to have been struck verbally, with no contracts due to be signed until June. Udinese president Giampaolo Pozzo wants to avoid any publicity that could affect the morale of his players and so nothing will be made official until the end of the season.

However, Milan have agreed to buy Jankulovski for £5.5 million, with the Czech Republic international committing to a four-year contract worth £1 million-a-season.

Jankulovski was also being chased by Inter Milan and Juventus, forcing AC Milan to wrap up a deal this month to avoid losing the left-winger in the summer.

Palermo prepare Bojinov bid

Football Italia

Palermo are being linked with a £10m bid for Valeri Bojinov - but Lecce insist only Chelsea have made an offer. The 18-year-old is one of the most exciting prospects in Italian football after a splendid season so far. A host of top European clubs have been associated with the starlet but it now seems that Palermo want his signature.

Chief Maurizio Zamparini is understood to be ready to offer Lecce £10.5m plus a share in the ownership of winger Andrea Gasbarroni. Lecce President Rico Semeraro is thought to now be considering the approach with just a few days left before the transfer window closes.

Palermo would certainly have pulled off a major swoop if they do succeed in their bid to sign the forward. That after Lecce sporting director Pantaleo Corvino had earlier revealed that just one club had contacted them with an offer.

"Only Chelsea have called," stated the official. "The player wants to be sold but he will stay with us until June." The Bulgarian international, who made his Serie A debut at the age of 15, has netted 11 League goals this term.

Arsenal's Reyes leaves door open to Real Madrid

Tribal Football

Jose Reyes has confirmed Arsenal beat Real Madrid for his signature last year.

"All I can say is he (Real Madrid president Florentino Perez) didn't act in time and I am here (Arsenal) now," he told Radio Marca. "I am very happy in London, and I like playing for such a big club. But I am happy that the president of a club like Real Madrid thinks about me."

"In football you never know what is going to happen," he added. "I have another four years left on my contract and I don't know if I will renew (my contract) when it finishes. You have to leave all doors open."

Robinho's agents agree Real Madrid deal to 2010

Tribal Football

The representatives of Santos winger Robinho has struck a deal with Real Madrid for next season. A group of agents, led by Juan Figger, have been in Madrid negotiating terms with Real on behalf of the youngster this week.

A deal has been agreed for a five-year contract, with Figger phoning Robinho last night to say: "Robinho, congratulations, you already can be considered a player of Real Madrid. This will be as of the month of July."

Robinho will play out the season with Santos as they seek glory in the Copa Liberatores. In their agreement, Real have the option of pulling out of the deal should Robinho be seriously injured before July.

Agent: It's only Deportivo La Coruna for Coloccini

Tribal Football

Deportivo La Coruna were in advanced talks yesterday with AC Milan over defender Fabricio Coloccini. Coloccini's agent, Marcelo Lombilla, was in La Coruna yesterday for talks with Depor president Augusto Caesar Lendoiro.

Lombilla said: "As soon as he heard of Depor's interest he was eager to come. He has offers from England, France, Spain and Italy, but if he can't join Depor then he won't leave Milan."

Coloccini doesn't want a loan deal and Lombilla added: "He's not interested in playing a few games and then leaving. If he leaves Milan, it will be for a long-term transfer."

Emerson injury hits Juve

Football Italia

Lazio's Fabio Liverani has been ruled out for a fortnight, while Emerson's injury forces Juve to completely change their midfield. Juventus are dealing with a midfield crisis, as Emerson limped off during the 2-0 win over Brescia with a groin strain.

The Brazilian has still not resumed training and is a major doubt to face Atalanta this weekend. It's a particularly bitter blow for the League leaders, as Pavel Nedved is also out for three weeks with a sprained knee and Manuele Blasi is suspended.

Gianluca Zambrotta and Gianluca Pessotto are not 100 per cent fit either, so Fabio Capello will be forced to make massive changes to his midfield.

Sociedad plot Tudor swoop

Football Italia

Real Sociedad are the latest club to be associated with a move for Juventus defender Igor Tudor. The Spanish outfit have allegedly made the Turin giants a tempting bid that they are ready to accept.

Although the club earlier suggested that Tudor would remain, after the departures of Mark Iuliano and Nicola Legrottaglie, that may no longer be the case. Tudor is not a regular fixture in the Delle Alpi side and he's eager for first team football elsewhere.

It's also believed that Middlesbrough and Portsmouth are very interested in the versatile Croatian international. Tudor's club teammate Stephen Appiah is also a wanted man before the January transfer window closes. Brescia have asked Juve to loan them the midfielder for the rest of the season as they look to escape relegation.

The Ghanaian, who already played for the Rigamonti outfit during the 2002-03 campaign, is likely to remain in Turin though.

Fiorentina open Juventus talks for Appiah

Tribal Football

Fiorentina have opened talks with Juventus over midfielder Stephen Appiah. New Fiorentina coach Dino Zoff has asked his director general, Fabrizio Lucchesi, to bring the Ghana international to Florence before the winter market closes.

Juve are ready to do business, but everything depends on coach Fabio Capello and whether he believes he can do without Appiah for the second-half of the season.

Middlesbrough, Sociedad go for Tudor

Tribal Football

Juventus have granted defender Igor Tudor a free transfer. After earlier this week indicating the Croatian would not be allowed to leave this month, Juve director general Luciano Moggi is believed to have told Tudor he is free to go.

Middlesbrough lead the race for the stopper, but Portsmouth and Real Sociedad have also tabled contract offers to the Croatia international in the last hours.

Ajax stand firm over Maxwell

Goal.com

Ajax coach Ronald Koeman has reiterated his stance that Maxwell will not be sold in January. The Brazilian has emerged as one of the brightest attacking full backs in Europe, with his displays for Ajax catching the eye of the cream of the crop.

Juventus have long been keen on the defender and they have been joined in the race by Italian rivals Internazionale, Roma and most notably moneybags Chelsea.

Ajax could find it tough to resist a major offer from Stamford Bridge, as it has been their policy to budget for the sale of one major star per year, but Koeman is not keen on unsettling the balance of his squad in the middle of the season.

"At this time, it is practically impossible to think about selling Maxwell," Koeman told the Dutch media. "We will look at the situation again at the end of the season."

Middlesbrough move for AC Milan defender Coloccini

Tribal Football

Middlesbrough have made a move for AC Milan defender Fabricio Coloccini. The Mirror says Boro boss Steve McClaren is trying to take the tough South American on loan for the rest of the season with a view to a permanent signing at around £2million.

Coloccini will quit Milan this summer and is available now with Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna also looking for a similar deal.

Milan ponder Gilardino bid

Football Italia

Milan have confirmed that Parma youngster Alberto Gilardino is a possible summer transfer target. The Italian international, 23, has been hotly linked with the Rossoneri and the club have admitted an interest.

"We are closely following both Gilardino and Marek Jankulovski of Udinese," director general Ariedo Braida told the Gazzetta dello Sport.

Gilardino, who was linked with Roma and Juventus last summer, is expected to be sold by the Tardini outfit at the end of the season. Czech international Jankulovski is also expected to move, with some reports suggesting he's already agreed a four-year contract with Milan.

Barcelona have option on Betis star Joaquin

Tribal Football

It has been revealed Barcelona have an option on Real Betis winger Joaquin. AS says Betis would have to accept a bid from Barca if it matched the highest on the table at anytime. The clause was negotiated three years ago when Barcelona striker Alfonso moved to Betis.

Joaquin's contract with Betis runs to 2010 and he has seen a £22 million bid from Chelsea and a £10 million offer from Manchester United turned down by president Manuel Ruiz de Lopera this season.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta is now considering entering the race for Joaquin, whose buyout clause is £25 million. Barca have never adequately replaced Luis Figo on the right-side of midfield since his defection to Real Madrid.

Barca midfielder Gerard could be offered to Betis in part-exchange for Joaquin. Gerard is off contract in the summer, but could be sold to Betis before June so to strengthen Barca's hand when the auction for Joaquin opens in the summer.

Juve renew Del Piero faith

Football Italia

Juventus have told admirers of Alessandro Del Piero to forget about any hopes they have of signing him.

"He is a champion and I'm sure that he will remain here with us," director general Luciano Moggi told the "Processo di Biscardi" TV show. "At this moment in time there are other players who are in better form but he is a first team regular and he will soon be doing the things he can."

Del Piero's future has been cast in doubt given his difficult relationship with boss Fabio Capello. The tactician doesn't seem convinced by the player and after continually substituting him, the captain has been dropped from the side for the last two League games.

That has led to speculation of a summer move, with his agent insisting that Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United are all keen.

"Evidently clubs are contacting his agent to see whether a move is possible," added Moggi. "But that is only because they know that we won't sell him. Del Piero will definitely remain here."

Juventus managing director Antonio Giraudo also backed the No 10, who is contracted to the Delle Alpi outfit until 2008, but warned him to improve.

"Del Piero is a champion but when you are at a club like Juventus you can't live on the past," he stated. "Capello currently has other ideas but let us not forget that the likes of Andriy Shevchenko and Christian Vieri both spent time on the bench a few years ago."

Nedved: I thought I was finished

SkySports

Juventus star Pavel Nedved has revealed that he thought his football career was over after Sunday's game against Brescia. The 2003 European Footballer of the Year left the pitch crying after picking up a painful knee injury, although scans later revealed that no ligament damage had occurred.

The Czech ace picked up a similar knock in the Euro 2004 semi-final against Greece, and is relieved that again he has avoided serious repercussions.

"I thought I was finished with football, I thought it could be the end," Nedved told La Stampa. "I felt a really bad pain, more than the one I had during Euro 2004 when I got an injury to my left knee.

"Leaving the pitch I was sure I had played my last match. I thought my meniscus and ligaments were completely broken, I thought I wouldn't recover. But it isn't so, and so you'll have to put up with me again, luckily in about 20 days I'll be back on the pitch."

Juventus chief Giraudo: Del Piero can't live in past

Tribal Football

Juventus director Antonio Giraudo has backed coach Fabio Capello's decision not to give fans' favourite Alessandro del Piero more time to find his form in the first team. Capello has come in for harsh criticism over the way he's treated Del Piero over the last few weeks, but Giraudo declared: "Del Piero is a champion.

"But when you're playing for Juve you cannot live on what you did in the past. You must always be proving you're good enough to wear the Juventus shirt."

Juventus chief blocks Tudor's Premiership ambition

Tribal Football

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi is blocking defender Igor Tudor's move to the Premiership. The Croatia international has been linked with Newcastle, Fulham and Tottenham and declared: "I want to leave Juve in order to play on-loan in the Premiership."

But Moggi has ruled out allowing Tudor to leave this week, insisting: "If we allow him to go then we will be left with a dangerously low group of defenders. Tudor will stay and enjoy the rest of the season with Juve."

Middlesbrough open Juventus talks over Tudor

Tribal Football

Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren is believed to be in Turin today for talks with Juventus over defender Igor Tudor. McClaren has not travelled with the Boro squad on a winter break to Spain and speculation suggests talks will open today with Juve over a permanent deal for the Croatia international.

Tudor is desperate to leave Juve and has declared this week an ambition to move to the Premiership.

Brescia in Juventus talks over Appiah

Tribal Football

Brescia are in talks with Juventus over midfielder Stephen Appiah. The Ghana international is also the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid, but would prefer to remain in Italy.

Juve coach Fabio Capello is prepared to release Appiah, particularly with Alessio Tacchinardi likely to stay beyond this month's transfer market. Brescia are keen to sign Appiah on-loan to the end of this season.

Atalanta chief confirms Pazzini "up for sale"

Tribal Football

Atalanta director general Roberto Zanzi has confirmed young striker Giampaolo Pazzini is up for sale. Palermo, Fiorentina and Juventus are all chasing the forward, who could be cashed in by Atalanta before the end of the month.

"Pazzini until yesterday was not for sale. But today we could decide to put him up for sale," admitted Zanzi. "There are many other clubs interested. In order to sell him, we want good money, or alternatively, a quality player plus a cash component in exchange."

Chelsea, Man Utd watch as Torres' agent warns Atletico Madrid

Tribal Football

The agent of Atletico Madrid captain Fernando Torres says the youngster could seek a move if the club cannot establish itself as the third force in Spanish football. With Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United all watching on, Torres' agent, Jose Antonio Martín, fired a warning at Atletico: "He is prepared to give Atletico time so that they can make their history together.

"He has taken into consideration where the club is now and where it has been and would like to make his own history with Atletico. But if the club cannot match his ambition, then Fernando must go elsewhere to create his own history."

But Martin added: "At the moment there is no haste because the player is happy at Atletico. Fernando doesn't just have a financial agreement with the club, he also has an emotional pact with them."

Kaka wins top honour

Football Italia

Milan ace Kaka has been named as Serie A's best player of 2004 by his fellow professionals. The Brazilian was handed the honour late last night at the annual 'Oscars' ceremony, organised by the Associazione Italiana Calciatori - the Italian Players' Association.

Kaka, who was also named as the best foreigner, beat Francesco Totti for the top prize even if the Roma star won the best Italian player category. Juventus No 1 Gigi Buffon defeated Nelson Dida of Milan and Lazio's Angelo Peruzzi in the best 'keeper section.

Veteran Paolo Maldini outshone Milan colleagues Jaap Stam and Alessandro Nesta to net the top defender prize. The best youngster award went to Parma's Alberto Gilardino, after he pipped Obafemi Martins of Inter and Roma enigma Antonio Cassano.

After leading Milan to Lo Scudetto, boss Carlo Ancelotti was named as best Coach ahead of Roberto Mancini and Cesare Prandelli. There was no surprise in the refereeing category as Pierluigi Collina gathered more votes than colleagues Roberto Rosetti and Gianluca Paparesta.

Lippi backs struggling Del Piero

Football Italia

Italy boss Marcello Lippi is convinced that Alessandro Del Piero will soon be back to his best. The Juventus captain didn't feature in the starting line-up on Sunday, for the second consecutive game, which suggests he doesn't feature in boss Fabio Capello's long-term plans.

"He is a serious young man and the fact that he has these characteristics means that he knows how to react in difficult circumstances," Lippi told Radio Anch'io lo Sport today.

Del Piero was a key figure in Lippi's 10 years at Juventus but the tactician has backed Capello's choices. "It is only right that a Coach does what he is convinced of, even if 90 per cent of people may think differently," added the former Napoli boss.

Despite Juve's form this term, Capello doesn't seem to be a fan favourite - a fact which was made clear on Sunday when the crowd chanted Marcello Lippi's name during the 2-0 win over Brescia.

"Even Capello accepted that was a normal thing to hear given the years I enjoyed at the club," he noted. "But it is now important that the supporters give Fabio their full backing."

Turning to the Azzurri scene, Lippi was questioned on who would be called up for the February 9 friendly against Russia. "I don't want to reveal anything," he answered. "All that I will say is that every single player out there should give their best in the hope of a call.

"I have a year and a half to construct a competitive squad, which will contain some experienced campaigners but also a number of Under-21 internationals. The championship will also spring up a surprise or two and I'm hopeful for the future."

Italy resume their qualification campaign at the San Siro against Scotland on March 26.

Capello defends Alex axe

Football Italia

Fabio Capello has brushed aside criticism from the Juventus fans for his decision to not use Alex Del Piero on Sunday. The club captain was left on the bench for the entire Brescia win, which led to chants in favour of Del Piero and Marcello Lippi, Capello's predecessor in Turin, from the Delle Alpi faithful.

"Whoever pays for a ticket has the right to chant for whoever they want," stated Capello. "I just have to do my job and make decisions. I chose to start with David Trezeguet but Alex is important for us and he will be given his chance. When Del Piero's moment arrives, then he will play."

Juventus are now five points clear of Milan in the Scudetto race after the Rossoneri lost 1-0 at Livorno.

"We gave very little away while we created five or six very good chances," added Capello after the 2-0 victory. "I liked how the team played. I had said that the squad was in good physical shape and we demonstrated that."

However, there could be some bad news for the Bianconeri after Pavel Nedved picked up a knee problem. "We're a bit worried about him because he was in great pain," said Capello. "The hope is that he will be feeling a lot better on Monday even if we are not sure how serious the injury is."

Nedved escapes ligament damage

Football Italia

Juventus have been handed a massive boost after Pavel Nedved's knee injury was confirmed to be less serious than first feared. The Czech ace was stretchered off in agony against Brescia on Sunday, sparking fears that he could be sidelined for a lengthy period.

But the midfielder underwent a series of tests this morning which showed no signs of ligament damage in his left knee. The League leaders expect the 2003 European Footballer of the Year to be on the treatment table for the next 15-20 days, making him available for the February 22 tie against Real Madrid.

Nedved is now likely to be replaced in the Bianconeri starting line-up by either Ruben Olivera or Olivier Kapo. There is also a slim chance that boss Fabio Capello could now play with a 4-3-1-2 system, fielding Alex Del Piero behind strikers David Trezeguet and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Monday 24 January

Juventus 2 - 0 Brescia

Football Italia

David Trezeguet has settled right back into his stride to extend Juve's lead at the top of the table, but this match was overshadowed by an injury to Pavel Nedved.

The pressure was back on the Bianconeri after their 1-1 draw away to Cagliari last week. Alessandro Del Piero was expected to give Zlatan Ibrahimovic a rest, but for the second week running the Juve captain was left on the bench, while Gianluca Pessotto replaced the injured Gianluca Zambrotta.

Fabio Capello marked the 400th Serie A match of his Coaching career and was nearly given a goal after 40 seconds when David Trezeguet took advantage of Gigi Di Biagio's defensive howler, only to fire wide. The Frenchman eventually hit the back of the net after 12 minutes when he was at full stretch to tap in a taut Ibrahimovic low cross from the right.

Brescia fought back and Gianluigi Buffon flew to make a fantastic save on Andrea Caracciolo's strike from the edge of the box following Jonathan Zebina's error.

Ibrahimovic somehow blasted over the bar from a promising position, then Mauro Camoranesi had a couple of good chances closed down. Brescia could have equalised just before the break on the counter-attack, but Mannini was unable to get his pass through to the unmarked Caracciolo after the Juve players were caught ball-watching.

Caracciolo dribbled past three players and had his final shot charged down by Lilian Thuram's elbow, but the referee judged it to be involuntary.

However, just as Brescia were pouring on the pressure, Juventus doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time. Ibrahmovic ran riot down the left flank and cut in for Trezeguet's tap-in, though Maurizio Domizzi probably got the final touch.

Castellazzi did well to parry a Pavel Nedved piledriver in the second half, but once again Buffon was called into a desperate intervention to pluck Mannini's cross off Caracciolo's feet.

There was bad news for Juventus on 71 minutes as Nedved accidentally hit his left knee on Milanetto's leg, a very similar incident to the one that caused a serious injury during Euro 2004. The Czech international was stretchered off in tears and it could be a long lay-off for the former European Player of the Year.

Trezeguet, Ibrahimovic and Olivier Kapo wasted good chances to further extend Juve's advantage.

Juventus: Buffon; Zebina, Cannavaro, Thuram, Pessotto (Birindelli 46); Camoranesi, Emerson (Olivera 53), Blasi, Nedved (Kapo 72); Ibrahimovic, Trezeguet

Brescia: Castellazzi; Zambelli (Zambrella 65), Di Biagio, Adani (Mareco 46); Domizzi, Stankevicius, Guana (Sculli 56), Milanetto, Mannini, Dallamano; Caracciolo

Post-Match Comments

Fabio Capello: "The team played with the right determination and we created at least six scoring opportunities. I am worried by the injuries we sustained today, especially to Pavel Nedved. Today I chose to use Zlatan Ibrahimovic and David Trezeguet, but Alessandro Del Piero is important for us and will have room in the future."

Zlatan and David: what a partnership!

Juventus.com

"We play well together, we're working to improve. This was the second match, after David's injury, where we partnered in attack and things went the best way".

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is undoubtedly satisfied with his performance against Brescia, where he served a precious assist to Trezeguet and brought Domizzi to score an own-goal while anticipating the Frenchman. His partnership with David is getting better and better and Trezegoal is taking great advantage from Zlatan's work.

"We can improve furthermore, we just need time. However today's went better than the match against Cagliari. I felt better physically and this was the reason why I could interact better with Zlatan. We're much satisfied with the win.

"We may have not showed great soccer but we managed to stretch to five points in front of Milan. It's certainly too soon to get excited but a wider advantage in the table is important, especially for our spirits."

Buffon: "Great gift from Livorno"

Juventus.com

"I hoped for a gift from Livorno, leaning on the unfriendly environment Milan would meet. I was eventually pleased and I'm happy about it".

The persuasive performance against Brescia and the increasing advantage over Milan, thanks to Livorno's win over the Rossoneri: that's double satisfaction to Gigi Buffon, who thanked the Amaranto and complimented his own team-mates for their performance, particularly Ibrahimovic and Trezeguet.

"They did great things together, placing the icing on the cake. However, let's not forget those who remained on the bench despite being great champions. I'm talking about Alessandro Del Piero, of course.

"Alex is great and his moment will come soon. He does know that and keeps training with the utmost commitment. When his turn will come, he'll be our ace".

Capello pleased as Juventus see off Brescia

Tribal Football

Juventus extended their lead to five points after beating Brescia 2-0 yesterday. After nearest rivals AC Milan lost to Livorno, a superb day for Juve was completed by their win over Brescia which was secured by a goal from David Trezeguet and a Maurizio Domizzi own goal.

Juve coach Fabio Capello said afterwards: "The team played with the right determination and we created at least six scoring opportunities.

"I am worried by the injuries we sustained today, especially to Pavel Nedved. Today I chose to use Zlatan Ibrahimovic and David Trezeguet, but Alessandro Del Piero is important for us and will have room in the future."

Montero considers Cagliari move

Football Italia

Juventus veteran Paolo Montero could be set for a switch to Cagliari, while Roberto Muzzi considers two Serie A proposals. The Sardinians have not kept a single clean sheet in their last nine games, and a costly defensive error proved decisive in yesterday's 1-0 defeat at Bologna, so they are looking for reinforcements.

Juve are already cutting down on their squad after selling Mark Iuliano to Real Majorca and loaning Nicola Legrottaglie out to Bologna. Igor Tudor was expected to be the next out of Turin during the January transfer window, but the ageing Montero is another option as his contract expires at the end of the season.

He would relish Cagliari for the first team football and opportunity to play alongside fellow Uruguayans Nelson Abeijon and Diego Lopez.

Agent denies Corinthians move: Mascherano prefers Juventus

Tribal Football

The agents of River Plate midfielder Javier Mascherano have denied the Argentine has agreed a deal with Brazilian powerhouse Corinthians.

It was reported that Corinthians owner Kia Joorabachian had struck terms with River over the 21 year-old, but a spokesman for Mascherano's agents declared: "Mascherano has not signed any contract with Corinthians. He would prefer to play for Juventus."

Juve coach Fabio Capello is desperate to find a long-term midfield partner for Emerson and Mascherano could fit the bill come the end of this season.

Juventus v Brescia: Preview

ESPN Soccernet

Alessandro Del Piero is pushing for a recall to the Juventus starting line-up for their clash with Brescia amid speculation that the enigmatic forward could be on the verge of a move away from the Delle Alpi.

The 30-year-old playmaker was back among the substitutes for last weekend's 1-1 draw with Cagliari, giving way for the return of France international David Trezeguet.

And the Italy frontman was also consigned to the bench in midweek, with Trezeguet once again preferred up front as the Bianconeri were dumped out of the Coppa Italia by Atalanta.

With Swedish hitman Zlatan Ibrahomivic enjoying a marvellous first season at the club following his "12.8million transfer from Ajax in the summer and Adrian Mutu poised to join the Turin side, Del Piero's days could be numbered.

According to his agent, a host of top European sides are keen to secure the signature of Del Piero, whose contract at the Delle Alpi runs until 2008.

"When his contract expires, Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United are first in the queue, followed by a number of Japanese clubs," Mario Miyakawa told Football Italia.

But Del Piero, whose love affair with the 'Old Lady' began with his move to Turin from Padova in 1993, is refusing to concede that his time at Juventus is almost up.

"Am I in decline?" he questioned. "If that is true then why does the club continue to invest money in a product that doesn't work? I've just read I'm going to Palermo in exchange for Cesare Bovo. With all respect, I'm staying at Juventus until 2008."

The club's director general Luciano Moggi has also spoke out in support of the under-fire forward. He said: "He is in no crisis and his future is not under discussion - he will see out his contract here."

The draw with Cagliari saw Juventus' lead over AC Milan at the summit of Serie A narrowed to just two points.

Couple that with their disappointing setback in the cup and Del Piero could be called upon to revive the Bianconeri's fortunes against a Brescia side who slipped to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Capello's outfit at the Rigamonti on the opening day of the season.

Defensive midfielder Alessio Tacchinardi will be missing on Sunday after picking up a hand injury which will see him sidelined for three weeks.

The Lombards will have to produce a performance that flies in the face of history if they are to record any kind of result at Juventus. In 20 matches played at the Delle Alpi against the Turin giants, Brescia have lost 15 and drawn five, hitting the back of the net just eight times in the process.

Add to that the fact that Juventus have been victorious in all but two of their league matches at home this season, and Gianni De Biasi's side, who have scored just 15 times in 19 matches, will understandably travel to Turin with a certain amount of trepidation.

Midfielder Marcus Schopp misses the encounter with a knee problem while an ankle injury sidelines Gilbert Martinez Vidal. Forward Simone Del Nero is out with a groin strain although the visitors will be boosted by the return of fellow striker Giuseppe Sculli after suspension.

Capello cools Del Piero comeback

Football Italia

All signs pointed to Alex Del Piero replacing Zlatan Ibrahimovic against Brescia, but Fabio Capello is not making it easy for his captain.

"You will see whether Del Piero plays or not," said the Juve boss in his press conference. "Ibrahimovic doesn't seem tired to me and he'll have time to rest in the future."

The fact Del Piero has been substituted repeatedly and even dropped from the starting eleven against Cagliari last week caused shockwaves, as his agent confirmed interest from Europe's top cubs, including Chelsea and Manchester United.

He was set to take over from Ibrahimovic, who has been used almost non-stop in the current campaign, but even that small consolation could be taken away from him.

"I don't think we need to rotate the squad with only one game per week," assured Capello. "In a month the Champions' League will start up again and everyone will have more space then."

The Bianconeri certainly cannot afford to rest on their laurels at the moment, as Milan have closed the gap to two points and Kaka told newspapers that they have the better team.

"Milan are behind us, so it is obvious they would say that to boost their confidence. Juve have the advantage and if I'd been offered this position at the start of the season I'd have been overjoyed. All we have to think about now is beating Brescia."

The Rondinelle have really struggled over the last month, but Juve will have to do without the injured Gianluca Zambrotta.

"Brescia are a tough squad on a purely physical level," warned Capello. "They have quality, but can also clam up when it's needed, while Andrea Caracciolo is a very dangerous centre-forward to face."

It will be a special occasion for the former Milan and Roma Coach, who celebrates his 400th Serie A match.

"Just think, I never even wanted to be a tactician. I'm not one to sit behind a desk and did it for three years, but always had to go running after work to clear my head. It's difficult for an athlete to stay away from the field and I slowly made my way up the ranks."

His decision to join Juventus - a team he had played for during his career - surprised many, but not as much as his projected plans for the future.

"I would not take another Italian club job," insisted Capello. "After Juve I'd enjoy an overseas experience, perhaps on an international bench."

He had already been contacted for the England post before Sven Goran Eriksson's signature, while the former Real Madrid boss has a strong following in Spain.

Juventus squad: Buffon, Ferrara, Montero, Pessotto, Emerson, Ibrahimovic, Del Piero, Nedved, Chimenti, Birindelli, Camoranesi, Trezeguet, Appiah, Blasi, Thuram, Kapo, Olivera, Zalayeta, Zebina, Cannavaro

Emerson distances Milan

Football Italia

Emerson insists leaders Juventus are not afraid of Milan closing the gap, but Gianluca Zambrotta is out of tomorrow's match with Brescia.

"We are not afraid of the Rossoneri," assured the Brazilian after their lead was cut to two points. "We respect them and although they believe they are the best, we have the same confidence in our own potential."

There have been some visible chinks in Juve's armour over the last few weeks, conceding avoidable late goals to draw at Parma and Cagliari.

"It is always comforting to be at the top of the table, but we know that there is no more margin for error. These two points can be crucial, as I recall when I was at Roma we lost the Scudetto to Juve by one."

Emerson was on target with his first Serie A goal for the Bianconeri in Cagliari last week, though he has also been suffering the strains of their packed calendar.

"It's a shame about that late goal, as we didn't have time to get back into it. For a little while I wasn't able to train properly," he explained, "but I have recovered from that shaky period. I am now ready and able to work for the team in whichever way Fabio Capello requires."

Several other players have fitness worries at the moment, as Gianluca Zambrotta and Alessio Tacchinardi are not expected to even be on the bench for Sunday's match with Brescia. The fullback is struggling with a calf strain, while the midfielder bruised his wrist during the Coppa Italia exit to Atalanta.

"A team cannot always be at the top of its game throughout a season," noted 'Il Puma'. "Despite only drawing at Cagliari, we did prove that we are on form and still on top of the table. I think people enjoy putting Juve down."

Alessandro Del Piero should get back into the starting eleven alongside David Trezeguet, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be allowed to rest.

"Everyone wants to play and Del Piero trains hard every day to improve. Capello has always been great with star players, as he makes his choices based on the good of the team and talks to his men. He's not as tough a Coach as people like to make out."

Juventus ace Emerson: Cassano is a phenomenon

Tribal Football

Juventus midfielder Emerson has heaped praise on former AS Roma teammate Antonio Cassano. The Italy international is still in new contract talks with Roma amid a series of bust-ups with management this season.

Juve officials have openly expressed their interest in signing Cassano in the summer and Emerson revealed: "We're still good friends. Cassano is a great player, a young person who is still growing, but he is already a champion today. Between us the friendship always remains even if we are no longer on the same team.

"I don't care what people are saying about him off the pitch. On the pitch he is a phenomenon."

Agent of Juventus star Del Piero reveals Man Utd, Chelsea interest

Football Italia

The agent of Juventus star Alessandro del Piero has revealed Manchester United and Chelsea have made contact with him. The Italy international is the subject of two concrete offers from J-League clubs Yokohama Marinos and Kashima Antlers.

However, his Japanese agent, Mario Miyakawa, says Del Piero's future remains in Europe for the time being. "Upon the expiration of his contract (in 2008) there would be in a queue Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United, before we'd consider offers from Japan," said Miyakawa.

Juventus make contract offer to Atletico Madrid's Ibanez

Tribal Football

Juventus have made contact with the representatives of Atletico Madrid defender Pablo Ibanez. Juve director general Luciano Moggi is aware that Ibanez's agent has been called to Madrid to renegotiate the youngster's contract - which has the relatively low buyout clause of £;8 million.

Moggi has offered Ibanez a contract worth £1.4 million-a-year - over double his present deal at Atletico. Juve have also contacted the Madrid giants to sound them out about Ibanez's availability. The Serie A leaders have made Atletico aware that both Stephen Appiah and Igor Tudor could be included in a cash-plus-player swap if they were prepared to sell Ibanez.

Ibrahimovic: Chelsea ahead of Juventus for Ajax mate Maxwell

Tribal Football

Juventus striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic fears his club may have missed the boat in their pursuit of his former Ajax teammate Maxwell. The Brazilian winger has been linked with both Juve and Chelsea and Ibrahimovic revealed: "I feel that he could be moving to London, but I do not know if the transfer has been agreed.

"It would have been great for me if we were successful to bring Maxwell to Turin."

Ancelotti wants Del Piero at AC Milan

Football Italia

AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti has revealed he's interested in Juventus attacker Alessandro del Piero. Ancelotti is aware of Del Piero's problems at Juve and admitted openly he'd welcome the opportunity of working with him at the San Siro.

At the end of a friendly on Thursday between Milan and Cervia, Ancelotti was asked if he had any advice for Del Piero. "Yes," he replied, "he should be confident in his ability to return to form and he should come to Milan."

Real Madrid secure Robinho to 5-year deal

Tribal Football

Real Madrid are set to announce the signing of Santos winger Robinho next week. Sources close to the negotiations have told AS that a deal has been agreed which will see Robinho ink a five-year contract with Real worth £1.4 million-a-season.

The transfer won't be announced officially until the end of next week due to Robinho's agent, Juan Figger, having to leave Spain this week on business. Real will pay Santos £12 million for the Brazil international, who snubbed rival offers from Benfica, PSV Eindhoven, Corinthians and Chelsea to sign with the Madrid giants.

Del Piero in demand - agent

Football Italia

Alessandro Del Piero's agent insists that there are a host of clubs queuing up for his signature. "When his contract expires, Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United are first in the queue, followed by a number of Japanese clubs," stated Mario Miyakawa.

The Juventus hero is currently tied to the club until 2008, but there are doubts about his future given his relationship with boss Fabio Capello. After being substituted 17 times in the League so far this season, the No 10 was dropped from the starting line-up last week to make way for the returning David Trezeguet.

The recent acquisition of former Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu, with the help of Livorno, has also sparked fears that Del Piero has no future in Turin. However, the 30-year-old, who has been at the Delle Alpi since 1993, is determined to prove that his career is not on the wane.

"Am I in decline? If that is true then why does the club continue to invest money in a product that doesn't work?" replied the club captain. He also laughed off suggestions that he may exit the Old Lady before his current agreement expires.

"I've just read I'm going to Palermo in exchange for Cesare Bovo," he added. "With all respect, I'm staying at Juventus until 2008."

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi also backed the player. "He is in no crisis and his future is not under discussion," he stated. "He will see out his contract here."

Juve obtain option on Meghni

Yahoo! Italia Sport

Juventus have obtained first option on Bologna's Mourad Meghni in exchange for the loan of Nicola Legrottaglie. The 24-year-old central midfielder has had an excellent season and if Bologna decides to release its prodigy then the french player is likely to move to Turin provided the clubs can find an agreeement.

Juve targets Chivu

Yahoo! Italia Sport

After having secured the attackers for next season with the acquisition of Adrian Mutu and Shabani Nonda, the bianconeri is now concentrating on defense and on top of the list is Roma's Cristian Chivu. The player's agents are open to the move to Turin and in the following months an official offer will be made to Roma.

In order to keep the cash down Juventus will insert Shabani Nonda into the deal after they obtain his rights on a free transfer from Monaco. The giallorossi are also interested in the player.

Real renew £40m Adriano bid

Football Italia

Arrigo Sacchi has pinpointed Adriano and Milan's Andrea Pirlo as the necessary reinforcements for Real Madrid. The former Rossoneri and Italy Coach has kept a close eye on Serie A stars since taking over as the Spaniards' director of football last month and these two players are top of his wish-list.

Adriano was already hot property on the transfer market earlier in the season, when Real President Florentino Perez admitted his interest in the Brazilian, but Sacchi spotted his talent even earlier when negotiating a co-ownership deal for Parma in 2002.

It is reported that Adriano - who will only turn 23 in February - is now valued at approximately £40m, but Inter would need a bigger sum than that to part with the 'Imperatore'. Adriano has already denied he wishes to leave the San Siro, despite a public appeal from Brazil teammate Ronaldo to join him in Spain.

Sacchi has another target in his sights for the notoriously unbalanced Real Madrid midfield, as he believes Andrea Pirlo is the man to give them greater equilibrium. The Milan star has been key to their recent successes under Carlo Ancelotti in a deeper role, though again it is highly unlikely the San Siro outfit will be willing to even negotiate.
